Work Experience

3D Modeling and Architectural Visualisation

Dthe six months experience, I extensively learnt wider aspects of architecture, especially how the choice of an architect’s could impact the user’s wellbeing and flow of the house. The point to take away from the practice is a variety of ways to tackle problem for different projects. The design process includes multiple site visit and design negotiation with the clients followed by liaising with

multidisciplinary teams to achieve the promised outcome suitable for their budget. Apart of presenting design options and 3D visualisation, I was given the task to drew technical drawings, researched appropriate material construction and be able to cooperate effectively with the team. By participating in many different projects, I have seen how each piece of knowledge from university have helped me throughout my work.

One of my responsibilities in interior design has benefited my architecture career greatly as I applied a holistic approach and visualised more coherent space in consideration to smaller details that would affect the client’s way of living. I have noticed an

intrinsic connection after working simultaneously in both fields since they could influence one another greatly, especially when it comes to structural design. I liaised with my supervisor, the architect of the project, and the contractors to alter some design in order to propose

a layout that offers a better living experience suitable for the client lifestyle. For example, changing the location of the door in the kitchen to accommodate more storage for the family of five or considering a bespoke joinery for their utility to make the space more organised. I

attended client meetings and was entrusted to create mood boards, joinery plans and chose materials for the design concept.Different material combination expresses distinct characteristics of the clients and creates a personalised space called ‘home’.

One of the most intriguing aspects of interior design is the joinery design, including bespoke dressing room, alcoves, niches and ledges.

Lack of storage is the common key issues for majority of the clients therefore being able to briefly design and locate these components on the architectural plans from the beginning were important to help the client visualises the space. Because of this full service, my team and I can have the full control of the changes, to propose the design that respects the building structure but, in the client’s interior taste.

Live/Work Space with Sustainable Considerations

There is a known persistent concern regarding the haphazard plot arrangements around the outskirts of Bangkok, which stemmed from the ineffective government control over pre-existing urban informalities. This proposed retrofit house was designed based on the understanding of existing construction and is tailored to the demands of inhabitants and their line of work to establish a user-friendly house.

Due to the developer’s intention to maximise the number of residences on a constrained site, retrofitting a house

presents an opportunity to integrate sustainable measures that the building lacked. The inflexibility of the existing design posed a challenge to the modern trend of live-work dwelling, which has grown in popularity as a result of technological advancements and the COVID-19 pandemic . As a result, the new design visualises an approach that enables long-term housing that can adapt to future changes. The design was influenced by ceramic art and the tranquil atmosphere perceived during its manufacturing process, which will take place in the integrated area of the front façade for the client’s daily work.

Characteristics of the Existing House:

• Low thermal mass materials (no insulation)

• Redbrick wall and reinforced concrete structure

• Front facade in North direction to minimise direct sunlight and maximise wind access

• Steep pitch roof to enhance water evacuation

• Large attic space for passive cooling

• Large openings in two aspects for cross ventilation

• Consistent internal temperature with plenty of shadings due to the tropical climate

Constraints of the Existing House:

• Solar Access: A 4-metre property wall blocks sunlight from the East, allowing only small quantities of light to pass through the gaps between timber cladding, resulting in insufficient daylight in the ground level

• Acoustic Problem: Thin shared wall with no insulation

• Internal Comfort: Excessive direct sunlight in the South during the afternoon that raises the temperature in habitable rooms

Sustainable Principles Applied in the Retrofit House:

● A micro-climate responsive design enhances the building performance and maximise its internal comfort taking into account of the constraints highlighted in the previous page.

● Considering that Bangkok is characterised with heavy precipitation, the adoption of a sustainable drainage system can therefore help alleviate flooding and inadequate infrastructure . It also reduces natural resources that is wasted in the network expansion by scaling down the growth of sewerage construction. This irrigation system is installed beneath the vegetations in the central courtyard.

● Solar Roof Tile Ventilation is installed to address the problem of overheating in tropical homes. It utilises passive cooling including cross ventilation and stack ventilation, in conjunction with active cooling powered by solar panels . Ceiling ventilators are also installed to help accelerating and stabilising the heat transfer process to ensure consistent internal comfort.

The central courtyard connects all the habitable rooms in the centre and brings amenity to the indoor environment. It serves as a transition between the living and working areas, emphasising the open-plan layout by allowing the outdoor scenery to enclose the building. The user could see through the building fabric while performing daily tasks via the translucent agriculture net , a wind-permeable membrane that filters direct sunlight. Sitting in the ceramic studio and looking out the window towards the green landscape could relieve work-related stress and boosts attention and creativity.

Butetown Community Library

Public library to Reduce Social Exclusion, Improve Information Access and eEmployability

Access to information is one of the fundamental human rights associated with freedom of expression and the right to ‘seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers.

There is a significant number of people with lower socio-economic backgrounds in Butetown, Cardiff, especially after the course of the pandemic. Research has shown that libraries are not only beneficial to the lower socioeconomic groups, but also provides access to information and knowledge which helps dealing with unemployment rates and improve social mobility within the community. Considering that approximately 60% of the

lower socio-economic group in Butetown do not have access to a public library, this project aims to reduce social exclusion regarding the right of access to information by providing the community an inclusive library that encourage its usage towards excluded groups, helping them to reconnect to society.

The library features workshops for skills development and career counselling to improve local social mobility by providing them requisite knowledge and employability skills. The zone is a collaborative space which promotes the importance of teamwork and communication and is located on the ground floor present to attract the locals and change their impressions

Vapour Control Layer

Located in the outer part of the timber frame system (no. 7) or the warmer surface of building to prevent penetration of moist air and to maintain a moderate level of moisture within the air cavity (no. 21). This significantly reduces the damage on structural timbers.

An enclosed boundary that controls and separates airflow between indoor air (conditioned space) and outdoor air (unconditioned space).

Foodscape Reformation

Re-imagining the Farming Future of Merthyr Tydfil

The project focuses on creating a self-sufficient community that further re-establishes their connection with food. Set in the future, it foresees a time when precision agriculture becomes more widespread with increased awareness of the need to be sustainable.

It proposes a multi-function building fitted with aeroponic farms and soil research facilities in hopes that it may restore the land of Merthyr Tydfil. Public spaces including open-air markets, and a restaurant will be accessible in the ground floor to promote farm-to-table dishes. An experimental plant

field will provide a n inclusive activity for the community to plant and harvest their plants along with pick-your-own fruit and vegetable aeroponic farms to not only support the local farmers, but to provide the freshest and ripe produce that are possibly better quality than in supermarkets. An anaerobic digestion plant will be also constructed to power the facilities, utilising the city waste as its power source. I hope that this project demonstrates a new perspective on climate emergency against the carbon footprint that imported food generates and provide a holistic solution and food security for communities without arable land.

The project mainly uses glulam and cross-laminated timber for the facade and load bearing structures. Glulam timber is shown to be durable, provides an aesthetic and welcoming vibe as well as a characteristic value of the building. The timber, a carbon-negative material, would also be originated from Wales to reduce carbon emissions.
