CLUSTER AND RISE! It all began with the question ‘What is a toy?’ One of the most compelling thing that existed is the different possibilities. Adopting the concept of mutualism as part of the system, I designed a manipulative toy which embrace the beauty of the differences.

The project initially investigates different existing toys. I studied the different aspects and value of each toys according to my interest, which has been taken into account to the design of my own toy.

ADOPTED CONCEPTS: bubble blowers – 1st toy My topic of interest are forms, merging process and the aspect of creating. According to my interest I made a research analysis and further on found out that bubbles merge at a 120º and clustered up to form a voronoi structure. magnatiles – 2nd toy Manipulation and modularity play the main role in my analysis. Thus, I adopted the system to the design of my toy in the upcoming phase.

TOY 1 C LU E L E S S CLUS TER

I experimented with voronoi and the variations of geometry by using grasshoppers. As the shapes unfold, the principle of randomness and chaos were hugely contributed. Therefore, I came up with my first toy, ‘clueless cluster’, which is a puzzle toy. A set of polyhedral would be given, and users are challenged to find the correct faces enable to complete the whole puzzle.

TOY 2 H IG H E RE VE R

‘Higher ever’ took forward the idea of modularity alongside the concept of going up higher from magnatiles . It is a construction toy which introduces a different method of connectivity. The toy has been executed as sticks that are joinable through connective nodes. The sticks are made from spaghetti which allow the users to break it down into different length. Floors are introduced in addition, to make the construction process even more engaging.

FIN A L TOY C LUS TER R I SE

My final toy, ‘cluster & rise’ adopts the concept of mutualism as part of the system. It embraces the beauty of the different possibilities. I mash the concept of ‘clustering’ from my 1st toy & the concept of ‘manipulative’ and ‘up higher’ from 2nd toy .

The bubbles are re-designed to have regular faces which allows the spaghetti to be thread through and form the structure. Theycombined together to build up a mutualistic relationship as he structure. The bubbles function as the base, nodes and connector.

EX TEND THE BOUNDARIES During the era of covid 19 people became more aware about their personal space. After several lockdowns we are not only aware of the physical space but many people started to limit their thoughts, lack inspirations and many confront stress as a consequence. In this project, I explore and extract the value of the concept ‘extend the boundaries’. The concept allows users to extend the boundary of a limited spatial existence to more interactions with space through the notion of yoga. By extending the physical space, it becomes a tool which dilutes the limitations we mentally constrained ourselves with.

In this project , the aspect of reaching and extending the body limitshas been explored. It challenged and questioned the limitation of the human body through the theme of ‘extending the boundaries’. The project initially starts as I observed my mother’s yoga routine.

THE LIVING PAINT BRUSH I continue to develop and challenge the aspect of reaching the body limits by exploring how the force constrains us from reaching our maximum capability. I worked on this with help from my friends, we tied ourselves with a rope which is connected to a cardboard ring and stretch into different directions. The idea of the ‘living paint brush’ has been interpreted to track how the three of us occupied space at different ranges. In this case we indicate our body limits with different colours of chalk by marking the distance we stretched to. By the end, the cardboard breaks. This exaggerated the theme of ‘break the boundaries’ which I carry on to my next project.

FILMING LOCATION: BASKETBALL COURT The basketball court has been interpreted as the canvas and it brings in the idea of delimited space.

The yoga capsule I proposed is extendable and is separated into two main parts – the outer and the inner boundary. The space in between the inner and the outer boundary is where the theme has been applied. The inner boundary is divided into two rooms – a yoga pod and a meditation pod. The yoga pod is the one that extends, it adopt ‘sliding’ as a method of extension, as it gives a smoother shift. The outer boundary functions as an anteroom which allows users to come in and prepare themself as well as protect the inside from the rain. A foot bath is included as cleansing is an important part of yoga, it allows users to “clean the body and clear the mind”.

17

In terms of materiality, the outer boundary is more related to the urban context. It is made with perforated aluminum sheets and etched glass which allows light to be capture in a mysterious way. Whereas the inner boundary is made with light colour wooden panels which gives a solid touch. The floors in the yoga area are covered with cedar wood which has a pleasant smell. The other area are made out of cream stone. As the programme activates it blurs a fix qualify plan, sections and the spatial volume. This smooth shifts blur down the confinement of the space as it allow users to slowly break through and enter a new boundary of space.
