WELL HELLO AGAIN! Here we are with Issue 4 of RAWR magazine, full to the brim with more fantastic poems and short stories written by young people in another successful series of RAWR Creative Writing Workshops. During the last few months we’ve had the glamour and the glitz of all the major award ceremonies like the Grammies, the BAFTAs, the BRITs and the Oscars shown to us on our TVs, so I thought it would be fitting to focus the creative writing produced during this term on television and fame. Read through the next 16 pages to find out what being famous means to some of the young people you know! For those RAWR readers interested in working in the media but are not sure which area, there’s a fab interview with an amazing animator who tells you his educational pathway into a creative career right here in Wales. And if you like entering quizzes or wowing you’re mates with an array of fun facts, you’ll like our round-up of tantalising telly trivia! So read on – and enjoy this latest issue of RAWR! If you’re interested in a creative career then read this RAWR interview with

ROMANO MARENGHI Describe yourself and your job? My name is Romano Marenghi and I am currently head of the CGI Animation department at Dinamo Productions. I've worked in the animation industry for eight years and been through various job roles. I started as an Assistant Animator, then went on to Lead Animator and more recently I've been CGI Animation Director for two large children's television programmes.

platforms, like visual effects and all over the web and in advertising. When I was in college the Lord Of The Rings films were being released every year throughout my animation course, it was the biggest inspiration to get – specifically 'Character Animation'. Nowadays I find comics inspire me equally as much as general story telling throughout all sorts of mediums, such as film, literature and funnily enough music and more recently history.

Have you always wanted to work in animation? I wanted to get into animation since about my early teens but art was always my strongest subject in school. Animation seemed like a fun and creative industry to get involved in, with very many different mediums to possibly be part of.

Who inspired you to be where you are today? My parents have always been extremely supportive in everything I do so I just keep doing my best to continue working and tackling any opportunity that may arise. I have them and the support of my family to thank for my success and happiness

What did you study in school to get the job you have today? Obviously I took Art, I enjoyed Design Technology which just turned out to be a very useful as well, and I needed English to get into college to do my Art Foundation course before taking a Diploma in Animation at University.

Why did you get into cartoon design? Generally most people make the mistake of thinking animation is cartoons and when you’re starting out as an animator and you have nothing else but paper and pencils to get you started it's the only way to go. I've always naturally loved design in a lot of its aspects. I did find myself drawing cartoons a lot, sometimes even when I shouldn't have been – like in other lessons where my mind used to wander!

How long did you have to spend studying your subject? I took about four years to complete my studies in animation but it is possible to do it in less time. If I'd really wanted to I could have taken a masters also but the job requires a good portfolio/showreel more than academic results. How would you rate your experience in college? I loved every moment of it! Being arty in school when I was there I was very much the minority, so arriving at art college alongside lots of like minded artistic and creative people was the best thing to ever happen to me. Some of the best years of my life. What was your inspiration to work in animation? I think generally already existing animation inspired me to get into animation. I found it magical to look at and watch and experience at the cinema or at home. The biggest inspiration was from films I'd watch with my dad, the likes of all the 'Ray Harryhausen' films and then things like 'Toy Story'. Toy Story was the big one at the time, but animation spreads over a wide range of multimedia

Where do you get your ideas from? My ideas come from everywhere and anywhere and I apply them wherever I can, whether it be in my designs or writing music or when others need ideas on something they’re working on. Generally I work with clients that need a job done, I come in and add as much artistic influence as I can to make an idea as good as it can be within the brief. What is your most successful animation? At the moment I believe 'Grandpa in My Pocket' is the most public successfully viewed programme I've actually worked on at Dinamo Productions, but I believe 'Rasta Mouse' might be the currently most successful programme to come out of Dinamo. What would you like to work on? I'd love to work on a Marvel film, such as 'Spiderman', 'The Hulk' or

'The Avengers', or even better one of the soon-to-be in cinemas 'Hobbit' films. What would your dream job be? I've been an Animation Director on 'The Iconicles' and that's about as high up the chain before producer that I'd like to go, but if I could direct my own film or direct a lead CGI character in a major motion picture that would be the pinnacle of my career. What are you aiming to achieve? I'd like to be involved in a new visual effects industry that's starting out here in South Wales. They've brought the likes of ‘Dr Who’ and ‘Sherlock’ to Wales and I'd love to be part of a successful drive that would bring more of that sort of work to South Wales. Is it hard work doing what you do and how would you rate your job? My job is quite hard. There is a big responsibility looking after the rest of the team and working with the clients. The turnover for getting a job done is nearly always more to be done than the time you have to do it. We're not necessarily saving lives, but the responsibility is always present to get a job done and to a good standard. Is it a fun job – and was it worth the wait? The job is definitely fun. Most animators will admit to being children who won't grow up, so the industry is made of these types of people and we don't take ourselves too seriously! We all know how to have a bit of fun and make the working environment something different and not exactly run of the mill. We essentially have office desk jobs but ours aren't what you would think of as a typical type of office job.

CHAT

Who have you met/who have you worked with? I've worked with many interesting people, everyone from students to a director who animated on ‘Roger Rabbit’ and a producer who's won an Oscar.

What are your plans for the future? I plan to continue doing this as long as I can, I want to work on as many different projects as possible and take every opportunity that's presented to me. Hopefully there will be some second series coming up. Hopefully ‘Iconicles’ Series 2 and hopefully this time next year Series 2 for a new programme called 'Ha Ha Haries' will come about – fingers crossed on its launch this month! What was your back-up job and have you ever thought about another career? I used to work in 'Park View Fish & Chip Shop' throughout school and university and my family come from a background of shop owners. I love working with people and I'd like to think if something changed I could go into that as a job, if not I've done a few projects with schools in the past and I have a few ideas of how to use art to do some group/team/school projects to liven up some of our local schools.

How would you rate your experiences? I think of myself as being very lucky. From time to time I think about the things I've done and the people I've met and the places I've been and I realise that my experiences aren't your average day job experiences. I love working with people and being creative and being paid to do so is something that makes me feel very lucky.

S D R O W Lady Ga-Ga’s album’s called Fame Oh what I’d do to be the same I’m glad I wasn’t born that way! Her clothes are a bit way out there She likes to change the style of her hair Millions listen to what she has to say! Bethan Veale

Why would you want to be famous? I don’t want to be famous A big house, flash cars These mean nothing without privacy You’ve got to be careful Watch what you say Watch what you do They have high expectations of you If you’re talented, forget it! You’ll be underrated anyway So why would you want to be famous? Beth Rees-Saunders

Laying in my bed My body feels like lead Thinking about my day I cannot wait to float away To the land of Nod Where I swim with the cod Emily Griffiths

She’s sitting in the centre of her bed, distractions coming from every direction. She needs to get this work done. She has her iPod blaring random songs, her phone is vibrating quietly every five minutes and a small voice is coming from her laptop. She has her pen to the blank page not knowing what to do. Her long dark brown hair sits on her head like a nest would sit in a tree, and her small fingers brush through it often as she gets more and more stressed. Beth Rees-Saunders

I would like to be famous But only for being talented I would like to earn the money Wear the clothes, have the hair But I would have no real life I can’t say what I think Do what I want Make mistakes I’d be captured all the time It would be like living in a goldfish bowl Would I like to be famous? Shannon Pullman

The chair where she usually sits is empty. I can’t hear her loud high-pitched voice or see her long blonde hair bouncing around the room. All I hear is silence, excruciating, crippling silence. The teacher asks where she is, but I don’t know what to say. I shouldn’t have let her go there – wherever ‘there’ is. I didn’t know him, she didn’t know him. I can feel guilt rushing through my body. Images of last night keep flashing through my mind, each one clearer than the last. Her red dress gets bolder every time I close my eyes. Where is she? Beth Rees-Saunders

I like to go to the movies and pout I go there if a good film is out Normally one that’s been recommended I eat chocolate and drink pop til I get a bad head In the cinema I had my first kiss Thinking back I wish I’d given it a miss We sat in the dark and watched Shrek By the end of the film I was a nervous wreck! Shannon Pullman

I would like to be famous Even though celebrities are tacky I would like to be wacky I would like to be in the press But not looking a mess Sometimes I think that it would be Just the very thing for me But then again, they usually get into drugs And end up looking like complete mugs Emily Griffiths

Wanting and longing for my bed When it’s time I just rest my head I lay wide awake, tossing and turning My mind feels like it’s burning Spiders, snakes, ghosts and a great big ghoul I haven’t got long until I get up for school Tick tock, Tick tock, Tick tock, Tick tock The constant sound of my bedroom clock Waiting to comfortably drift away Winter’s so cold, I hope I wake up in May! Shannon Pullman

We stop and stare Maybe the one about the bear? He does not care This was only a dare! We’re off to the movies Off to share cold smoothies Even if this is just lust Kissing in the dark is a must! Emily Griffiths

I’m curled up in a ball After arranging my thoughts I fall asleep It’s dark – I can’t see anything It’s quiet – I think I’m on my own Then I jump I’m awake again! Beth Rees-Saunders

Strutting down the busy high street, Clara turns heads. Her perfect hair bounces halfway down her back, her beautifully tanned skin glows radiantly in the sunshine. Only she could pull off six inch Labountins and a dress we could only dream of wearing. With her Raybans on she doesn’t see the looks of amazement she gets from passing males, her false nails are way too busy clicking on her bold Blackberry. Her newly improved lips are perfectly pouting and her Tiffany’s bag dangling beautifully from her arm. Her diary is full of shoots and parties for that week. No one realises that beneath the shedload of MAC on her face there’s a very stressed young girl trying to break free. Emily Griffiths

Maybe you can get rich by being famous But you can get obsessed with the high that 15 minutes of fame brings When that’s over, what do you do? Once you become a ‘somebody’ there is no going back You can’t be a nobody, your freedom is lost Your dignity gone What once mattered, matters no more Mundane life turns to parties, sex, drugs Average isn’t an option Anything to bring it back Maybe you can get rich by being famous But once you’re exposed, there’s no going back To the blissful, ignorant life Kate Mathias

Wet cheeks Silent terror Mam, can you help me? But you cannot hear Heavy breathing Sweaty palms I’m trying to escape But I know no-one is near Wait, is someone there? Now I’m wide awake But the horror is still here Screaming lungs Scrambling feet Heart beating Until the light gives me relief Kate Mathias

The chair where she normally sits is empty. The blur from last night is still in my head. My best friend is missing – where is she? My mobile remains silent in my bag, it’s usually going ten to the dozen with texts off her. My teacher asks where she is, I can’t give a straight answer. People start to question why I’m so quiet today. I can’t tell them it’s because my best friend is missing. Well, she isn’t missing. She’s safe, safe in the house of I boy I don’t know. That’s what I’m thinking in my head anyway. Finally my ring tone bursts through the quietness of the class. It’s Molly, her mother! “I have to get this,” I say. Falling over my bag, I run out of the class. Molly hasn’t heard from her either. I’m starting to feel as if this is all my fault. I’m guilty for leaving her go, but who am I to stop her? She’s seventeen, old enough to make her own decisions. I’ve got an image of her in my head, I hope this stays just an image. She can’t be laying in the gutter, her new pink dress ripped, her blonde curls mangled with blood. Emily Griffiths

Her name is Kate She is always late! If her name was Shirley Would she be early? Bethan Veale

Excuse me, I want to be famous! Can you act, dance, sing? I have no talents, but please let me in! Are you pretty and thin? Maybe modelling? I have no shame, I’ll do anything! I’ll give you 15 minutes in exchange for your soul But you will be kicked out after your first mole You must accept the consequences There’s no going back I’ll steal your privacy And make you long for normalcy Zoe Evans

Popcorn? Check. Giant sized drink? Check RomComs with the girls Comedies as a group Kids film with your baby brother Who wants to see it less than you! Horrors with your partner As an excuse to cuddle up One day you’re in snowy New York The next you’re in a monster filled wonderland There’s nothing like going to the movies! Zoe Evans

I collapse on the little piece of heaven in my room I regret leaving him every morning I wish I never had to go But he always takes me back Which makes me love him more He keeps me snug and cosy Til I’m tired and real dozy I love my bed! Zoe Evans
