SHAKER REINTERPRETED

Shaker Design philosophy, “Do not make something unless it is both necessary and useful; but if it is both necessary and useful; do not hesitate to make it beautiful.

RESEARCH

“What has become known as the classic period of Shaker furniture started in the 1820s and ended around 1860. The pieces produced during this time were not the result of studies approach to design or a conscious effort to create masterpieces, but were rather expressions of utility, simplicity, and perfection attricutable to spiritual inspiration, moral responsiveness, dedication to a craft, and skill. 2

“Sewing cabinets and writing desks were in most cases made of mixed woods; cherry, maple, and pine were the principal materials. furniture parts such as bedposts chair members, stand pedestals, and table legs, all of which repuired strength, were constructed from rock or sugar maple. Ash, hickory, and white oak were used for bent parts. The working qualities of butternut and chestnut were appreciated; they were often used for the entire piece, or selectively, as in panels for case pieces. Drawer pulls of apple and pear wood are also found, and imported mahogany and rosewood were used sparingly for trim on special pieces. 3

After purchasing the lumbers, processing the wood is the first step. Using the jointer machine trims the one surface into flat, then use the surface kissing the support panel to trim the edge, which can make 90 degree corner. Then, the planer machine helps the wood parallel. Last, just simply cut the bumpy extra edge.

Doing the same process for four pieces wood. Organizing wood grain to make nice pattern on the top. Then draw a mark on top, which helps to remember the

order. Using wood glue to glue two edges, then use several clampers to clamp two pieces together twice. Because smaller piece is more easier to process.

6

6

Next, measure the appropriate depth of the slots by pencil, and use dato saw to create relief cut. Prepare to create the dovetail.

To create dovetail, choose appropriate dovetail router bit first. Then using the router machine to create the dovetails. Remember the bit’s twisting

13

direction every time. After making the dovetail for all wood pieces, clamped four pieces together and glued them. While waiting, draw the radius of the table corner on

the jig, then copy it on the wood pieces. Use sand machine to sand the corner, and finish the two main fixtures.

Use table saw to cut the appropriate size for another pieces of short fixtures. Then draw the center line of two pieces,

19

where need to be jointed. Use Domino Joiner to create the biscuit joint.

After the table surface is dry, cut it into small piece to make the foldable leaf. Then start to make the hinge. First, just draw the

line along the hinge, then use the cutter to cut a debossed mark. Measure the depth of the hinge, draw the line on

the edge of wood. Hold use screws to fix the the chisel to create the position. debossed slots for hinge position. After chiseling all the debossed areas,

Use the table saw to create the jig for dowels. Basicaly, just change the degree of the saw to 45 degree, and create two triangle blocks, then glue them

32

on one mdf block. Set up the dato saw to trim the upper part of dowels, so it can fit the fixtures to make the legs of the table. Trim all the dowels at the same time.

Use drilling machine to create the debossed holes for the small dowels. Those small dowels can make the table to become more stable. For doing the small

dowels, just put them on the lathe, then trim them a little bit, so these parts can be sparyed the color on it.

For sparying the color, use the duck tape to wrap the parts where don’t need color. Then spary the color, wait for 30 minutes to dry, and do the second layers. After doing all three layers, just simply spary the polycrylic on it and wait it to dry.
