As Dean of the School of Arts and Communication at Pacific Lutheran University, I take great pride in the incredible array of events that our talented students and faculty present each year. Last season alone, we presented over 420 events, featuring 7,000+ students and faculty (many in multiple events), to over 23,000 audience members. We also opened the new Karen Hille Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, one of the region’s preeminent performing arts centers, which provides an exemplary environment for learning and creativity. The 2014-15 season will highlight collaborations between artists and scholars, artistic and intellectual media, and between the university and community. The 2015 SOAC FOCUS Series will explore perspective - the connection of people, disciplines, and the ideas that draw meaning to our worldview. I encourage you to keep connected with us through our various media sources - SOACtivities; Facebook; Twitter; and, of course, the SOAC website: www.plu.edu/soac. Please feel free to connect with me directly at cbennett@plu.edu. I look forward to seeing you at our events this season. Sincerely,

Cameron Bennett Dean, School of Arts and Communication

The University Gallery’s National Print Exhibition provides the PLU community with a chance to see the world from many different vantage points. Featuring printwork from all over the United States, the exhibition surveys the remarkable range of mark making and imagery of some of the finest printmakers in the country. Visibility and Empathy Monday, April 6, at 6pm Studio Theater, Karen Hille Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Free This panel explores the nature of conflict, communication and the arts. When individuals, groups, and communities clash, there is a sense that one’s perspective is not being heard and seen. The work of conflict practitioners is to create and facilitate processes that allow each group to see the other. The process of making others visible and of helping participants take perspective can involve an array of expression – storytelling, playwriting and production, artistic exploration, bodywork and more. This panel will bring together conflict, community and peace practitioners who use a variety of expressive forms to connect participants working to manage conflict, build community and even create peace. event spaces Mary Baker Russell Music Center The Mary Baker Russell Music Center includes choral and instrumental rehearsal spaces; faculty studios; practice rooms; a music library; electronic music labs; classrooms; and the acoustically impressive Lagerquist Concert Hall, which houses the Gottfried and Mary Fuchs Organ, the largest university-based organ on the West Coast. This building also features the magnificent Chihuly Glass Roses installation in the lobby, and the Amphitheater, the perfect location for outside concerts.

Karen Hille Phillips Center for the Performing Arts The newly renovated Karen Hille Phillips Center for the Performing Arts at PLU is the premier performing arts center in the South Sound. It includes two performance spaces—the mainstage and studio theater—as well as a scene shop, art gallery, costume design shop and dressing and make-up rooms. While the mainstage lends itself to large productions, the studio theater, a blackbox-style performance space, is ideal for small, intimate settings. Both theaters boast top-of-theline technology, with new lighting systems, stateof-the-art control boards and LED lights.

Aida Ingram Hall

Ingram Hall houses a variety of resources, including computer labs; the Center for Media Studies; the MediaLab studio; forensics squad room; larger studios for art education, ceramics, graphic design, letterpress, photography, printmaking and sculpture; and the Boge Library, featuring more than 1,200 books and resources. Ingram features two gallery spaces: the University Gallery, which hosts exhibitions from professional artists, faculty and students, and Wekell Gallery, which is used as a teaching space.
