New salvo from the world’s leading dissident intellectual
On Western Terrorism
From Hiroshima to Drone Warfare Noam Chomsky and Andre Vltchek In On Western Terrorism Noam Chomsky, world renowned dissident intellectual, discusses Western power and propaganda with filmmaker and investigative journalist Andre Vltchek. The discussion weaves historical narrative with the two men's personal experiences which have led them to a life of activism. Beginning with the New York newsstand where Chomsky began his political education as a teenager, the discussion broadens out to the shifting forms of imperial control and the Western propaganda apparatus. Along the way Chomsky and Vltchek touch upon many countries of which they have personal experience, including Nicaragua, Cuba, China, Chile and Turkey. A blast of fresh air which blows away the cobwebs of propaganda and deception, On Western Terrorism is a powerful critique of the West's role in the world and a testament to two lives dedicated to humanism, activism and the search for knowledge. Noam Chomsky is a world renowned linguist and one of America's
foremost social critics. He is Institute Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT and the author of numerous books for Pluto Press, including Fateful Triangle, The New Military Humanism, Power and Terror and A New Generation Draws the Line. Andre Vltchek is a novelist, filmmaker, investigative journalist and playwright. He is the author of a number of books including Indonesia: Archipelago of Fear (Pluto, 2012) and Oceania (2009). He currently lives and works in East Africa, Indonesia and Japan.

This is a much-needed account of Allende's life, showing the consistency of his political project and arguing persuasively that he was always at heart a revolutionary. This is a political biography of one of the 20th century’s most emblematic left-wing figures - Salvador Allende, who was president of Chile until he was ousted by General Pinochet in a US-supported coup in 1973. Victor Figueroa Clark guides us through Allende's life and political project, answering some of the most frequently asked questions. Was he a revolutionary or a reformist? A bureaucrat or inspirational democrat? Clark argues that Allende and the Popular Unity Party created a unique fusion which was both revolutionary and democratic. The process led by Allende was a symbol of hope for the left during his short time in power. Forty years on, and with left governments back in power across Latin America, this book looks back at the man and the process in order to draw vital lessons for the left in Latin America and around the world today. Victor Figueroa Clark lectures at the London School of Economics and is the editor of lefthistory.com. His previous works include a history of the Chilean volunteers who fought for the Sandinistas.

The red suffragette
Sylvia Pankhurst
Suffragette, Socialist and Scourge of Empire Katherine Connelly Series: Revolutionary Lives Sylvia Pankhurst dedicated her life to fighting oppression and injustice. In this vivid biography Katherine Connelly charts Pankhurst's activism from her teens as a member of the Independent Labour Party, to her time as a leading suffragette before the First World War, through to her revolutionary socialist, anti-fascist and anti-imperialist campaigning in later years. Connelly analyses the frustrating aspects of Pankhurst's political practice: why she did not speak out earlier in the suffragette movement, why she let herself be forced out of the Women’s Social and Political Union and why she ended her days under the patronage of the Emperor of Ethiopia. This lively and accessible biography presents Pankhurst, despite her flaws, as a courageous and inspiring campaigner, of huge relevance to those engaged in political struggles today. Katherine Connelly is a leading member of Counterfire and a regular contributor to its online magazine. She has also contributed to International Socialism and Socialist Review, and is currently conducting doctoral research in History at Queen Mary, University of London.

Capitalist growth is widely heralded as the only answer to the crisis still sweeping the global economy. Yet the era of corporate globalisation has been defined by unprecedented levels of inequality and environmental degradation. A return to capitalist growth threatens to exacerbate these problems, not solve them. In The Poverty of Capitalism, John Hilary reveals the true face of transnational capital in its insatiable drive for expansion and accumulation. He exposes the myth of ‘corporate social responsibility’ (CSR), and highlights key areas of conflict over natural resources, labour rights and food sovereignty. Hilary also describes the growing popular resistance to corporate power, as well as the new social movements seeking to develop alternatives to capitalism itself. This book will be essential reading for all those concerned with global justice, human rights and equity in the world order. John Hilary is Executive Director of War on Want.

The global aviation economy
Plane Truth
Aviation’s Real Impact on People and the Environment Rose Bridger Aviation is one of the world’s fastest growing industries. Passenger numbers and cargo volumes are projected to double in the next 20 years. Yet aviation is a fast growing source of greenhouse gas emissions and plans for expansion are met with protests around the world. Plane Truth shows how new runways and airports gobble up farmland and wildlife habitats and inflict noise and air pollution on communities. It reveals the extraordinary level of subsidy for the industry, from government expenditure on infrastructure to tax breaks, and shows how urbanisation surrounding airports is a growing source of revenue for airport growth. Bridger explains how these revenue streams support aviation in the face of rising oil prices and the global economic downturn. Plane Truth demolishes industry claims that fuel efficient aircraft and alternative fuels can enable growth without increasing climate change and reveals the symbiotic relationship between aviation and wider socio-economic problems. Rose Bridger works on environmental issues in the UK in the areas
of policy, practical projects and community development. She has been a consultant for the local food sector and campaigned against air freight expansion for a number of years.

Rejecting the medicine of economic orthodoxy
Austerity Ireland The Failure of Irish Capitalism Kieran Allen with Brian O'Boyle Ireland has been marketed as the poster boy of EU austerity. EU elites and neoliberal commentators claim that the country’s ability to suffer economic pain will attract investors and generate a recovery. In Austerity Ireland, Kieran Allen challenges this official narrative and argues that the Irish state’s response to the crash has primarily been designed to protect economic privilege. The resulting austerity has been a failure and is likely to produce a decade of hardship. The book offers a deeply informed diagnosis of Ireland's current socio-economic and political malaise, suggesting that a political earthquake is underway which may benefit the left. Austerity Ireland is essential reading for students of Irish politics and economics, as well as those interested in the politics of austerity and the eurozone crisis. Vision and strategy from Europe's new left
Crucible of Resistance
Greece, the Eurozone and the World Economy Christos Laskos and Euclid Tsakalotos Crucible of Resistance seeks to challenge the mainstream account of the 'Greek Crisis' and situate it within a broader regional context and ultimately a critique of the world economic system. Christos Laskos and Euclid Tsakalotos argue that Greece’s exceptionalism is largely a myth. They show how the causes of the Greek crisis lie in key features of the neoliberal economic order, including income and wealth inequalities and the hollowing out of democratic and deliberative institutions. A progressive exit from the crisis, for Greece and the eurozone as a whole, entails meeting head-on the limitations of the neoliberal order. Crucible of Resistance argues that an effective response means confronting not just neoliberalism, but also the earlier socialdemocratic Keynesian regime. This book widens out the debate about the crisis in Greece and the eurozone, linking it to socialist and class strategies at the international level. Christos Laskos is an economist, teacher and co-author, with Euclid
Tsakalotos, of 22 Things that they tell you about the Greek crisis that aren’t so (2013). He is a member of the political secretariat of SYRIZA, the Greek radical left party. Euclid Tsakalotos is Professor of Economics at the University of Athens and a member of Parliament for SYRIZA. He is the co-author, with Christos Laskos, of 22 Things that they tell you about the Greek crisis that aren’t so (2013).

Bad News for Refugees Greg Philo, Emma Briant and Pauline Donald Bad News for Refugees analyses the political, economic and environmental contexts of migration and looks specifically at how refugees and asylum seekers have been stigmatised in political rhetoric and in media coverage. Through forensic research it shows how hysterical and inaccurate media accounts act to legitimise political action which can have terrible consequences both on the lives of refugees and also on established migrant communities. Based on new research by the renowned Glasgow Media Group, Bad News for Refugees is essential reading for those concerned with the negative effects of media on public understanding and for the safety of vulnerable groups and communities in our society. This is an enormously important book that documents with meticulous scholarship the way in which refugees and immigrants have been stigmatised by the British media. It offers a compelling analysis of what is omitted from media accounts, which voices are left unheard, how simplifications and stereotypes are generated, and the consequences of this prejudiced reporting for immigrant communities who feel themselves to be under constant attack. Churnalism, Complacency and Collusion
A Critical Introduction to Business and Financial Journalism Keith J. Butterick Churnalism, Complacency and Collusion provides a definitive analysis of financial and business journalism - its origins, how and why it developed and how it shapes and influences political debates. Keith J. Butterick provides a compelling explanation for why big business needs the press and why the press needs big business. The book cuts through the fog of misreporting which occurred during the recent financial crisis, explaining just why so much that passes for financial journalism is inadequate. Butterick sheds light on an area of journalism which is little understood, revealing the models by which it operates and why business and financial journalism continues to be more successful than other sectors of the print media. It will be essential reading for students of journalism and media studies. Keith J. Butterick is director of the Huddersfield Centre for Communication Research at the University of Huddersfield and the author of Introducing Public Relations Theory and Practice (2011). He is an award winning business journalist, magazine editor and director of a financial Public Relations consultancy.

Consumerism or commons?

Common Ground explores the philosophical relationship between collectivity, individuality, affect and agency in the neoliberal era. Jeremy Gilbert argues that individualism is forced upon us by neoliberal culture, fatally limiting our capacity to escape the current crisis of democratic politics. The book asks how forces and ideas opposed to neoliberal hegemony, and to the individualist tradition in Western thought, might serve to protect some idea of communality, and how far we must accept assumptions about the nature of individuality and collectivity which are the legacy of an elitist tradition. Along the way it examines different ideas and practices of collectivity, from conservative notions of hierarchical and patriarchal communities to the politics of ‘horizontality’ and ‘the commons’ which are at the heart of radical movements today . Exploring this fundamental faultline in contemporary political struggle, Common Ground proposes a radically non-individualist mode of imagining social life, collective creativity and democratic possibility. Jeremy Gilbert is Professor of Cultural and Political Theory at the
University of East London. He edits the journal New Formations and is an adviser to several other journals including Soundings and Social Movement Studies. He is the co-author of Discographies: Dance, Music, Culture and the Politics of Sound (2002) and the author of Anti-capitalism and Culture: Radical Theory and Popular Politics (2008).

Groundbreaking intervention in queer studies
After Queer Theory
The Limits of Sexual Politics James Penney After Queer Theory makes the provocative claim that queer theory has run its course, made obsolete by the elaboration of its own logic within capitalism. James Penney argues that far from signalling the end of anti-homophobic criticism, however, the end of queer presents the occasion to rethink the relation between sexuality and politics. Through a critical return to Marxism and psychoanalysis (Freud and Lacan), Penney insists that the way to implant sexuality in the field of political antagonism is paradoxically to abandon the exhausted premise of a politicised sexuality. After Queer Theory argues that it is necessary to wrest sexuality from the dead-end of identity politics, opening it up to a universal emancipatory struggle beyond the reach of capitalism's powers of commodification. James Penney teaches cultural theory at Trent University, Canada. He is
the author of The Structures of Love: Art and Politics beyond the Transference (2012), and The World of Perversion: Psychoanalysis and the Impossible Absolute of Desire (2006).

Despite its emblematic place within contemporary racism and its increasingly important position in defining relations between states and ethnicised minorities, Islamophobia remains a contested, frequently unrecognised and largely under-theorised form of racism. The Politics of Islamophobia provides a definitive contribution to these debates, offering a theoretically sophisticated account which draws upon a series of substantive case studies to position Islamophobia as an expression of racialised governmentality. By taking into account connections across different national contexts, and by moving beyond the limiting framing of the 'War on Terror' which has dominated recent debates, this book offers a new perspective on the study of Islamophobia. David Tyrer teaches Sociology and Criminology at Liverpool John
Moores University. He is the co-author of Race, Crime and Resistance (2011).

From Cold War subversion to the new scramble for Africa
The Threat of Liberation
Imperialism and Revolution in Zanzibar Amrit Wilson The Threat of Liberation returns to the tumultuous years of the Cold War, when, in a striking parallel with today, imperialist powers were seeking to institute ‘regime change’ and install pliant governments. Using iconic photographs, declassified US and British documents, and in-depth interviews, Amrit Wilson examines the role of the Umma Party of Zanzibar and its leader, the visionary Marxist revolutionary, Abdulrahman Mohamed Babu. Drawing parallels between US paranoia about Chinese Communist influence in the 1960s with contemporary fears about Chinese influence, it looks at the new race for Africa’s resources, the creation of AFRICOM and how East African politicians have bolstered US control. The book also draws on US cables released by Wikileaks showing Zanzibar's role in the ‘War on Terror’ in Eastern Africa today. The Threat of Liberation reflects on the history of a party which confronted imperialism and built unity across ethnic divisions, and considers the contemporary relevance of such strategies. Amrit Wilson is the author of Dreams, Questions, Struggles: South Asian
Women in Britain (Pluto, 2006), The Challenge Road: Women in the Eritrean Revolution (1991) and US Foreign Policy and Revolution: the Creation of Tanzania (Pluto, 1989) and the co-editor of The Future that Works: Selected Writings of A.M. Babu (2002).

Formative struggles of multiracial Britain
Black Star Britain's Asian Youth Movements Anandi Ramamurthy

Black Star documents the Asian Youth Movements that emerged in 1970s and 1980s Britain. These organisations, established by the children of early migrants, were determined to struggle against both the racism of the street and the state. Anandi Ramamurthy shows how they drew inspiration from black power movements as well as antiimperialist and workers' struggles across the globe. Ramamurthy traces how they were part of a wider collective struggling for social justice and national liberation. In their struggle to make Britain their home they identified with a broad-based black unity where black was a political colour inspiring unity amongst all those struggling against racism. The book documents how by the late 1980s this broad based black identity disintegrated as Islamophobia became a new form of racism. In the process the legacy of the Asian Youth Movements has been largely lost. Black Star retrieves this history and assesses its importance for political struggles in Britain today. Anandi Ramamurthy is a Senior Lecturer in Film and Media at the University of Central Lancashire.

This book recalls the sharp posters, enthusiasm, dedication and long vigils as testimony to a difficult settlement in multiracial Britain. Anandi Ramamurthy retrieves this history as a living, and urgent, heritage. An absolute triumph. Professor John Hutnyk

Turkey Reframed
Constituting Neoliberal Hegemony Edited by Ahmet Bekmen, İsmet Akça and Barış Alp Özden Turkey Reframed documents the first decade of the 2000s, a period of radical change in Turkish society and politics, which has been marked by the major economic crisis of 2001 and the coming to power of ex-Islamist cadres organised under the Justice and Development Party (AKP). The contributors analyse this period of radical change, with its continuities and breaks, and its main actor, the AKP, in relation to the creation of a neoliberal hegemony in post-1980 Turkey. They analyse why the conflictual, turbulent and painful history of neoliberal hegemony has reached a point of stabilisation under successive AKP governments. Turkey Reframed is a cutting-edge guide for students, scholars and other interested readers who want to understand this period in Turkey’s recent history. Final Solutions offers a ground breaking and genuinely unique analysis of modern genocide. Sabby Sagall draws on the insights of the Frankfurt School and Wilhelm Reich to create an innovative combination of Marxism and psychoanalysis. He argues that genocide is a product of an ‘irrational’ destructiveness by social classes or communities that have suffered major historical defeats or similar forms of extreme stress. Sagall shows how the denial of human needs and the ensuing feelings of isolation and powerlessness propel groups to project the rage, hatred and destructiveness engendered by these defeats on to the 'outsider' and the 'other'. The book applies this theoretical framework to four modern genocides – those of the Native Americans, the Armenians, the Jews and the Rwandan Tutsis. This is a truly pioneering contribution which adds to our understanding of some of the darkest hours of humanity – and how we can stop them from happening again. Sabby Sagall is a former senior lecturer in Sociology at the University of
East London. He writes regularly for Socialist Review.

Rebellious theory
Subalternity, Antagonism, Autonomy
Constructing the Political Subject Massimo Modonesi. Foreword by John Holloway Series: Reading Gramsci In this bold and innovative book, Massimo Modonesi weaves together theory and political practice by relating the concepts of subalternity, antagonism and autonomy to contemporary movements in Latin America and elsewhere. In a sophisticated account, Modonesi reconstructs the debates between Marxist authors and schools of thought in order to sketch out informed strategies of resistance. He reviews the works of Gramsci, Negri, Castoriadis and Lefort, and engages with the arguments made by E. P. Thompson, Spivak, Laclau and Mouffe. Subalternity, Antagonism, Autonomy firmly roots key theoretical arguments from a range of critical thinkers within specific political movements in order to recover these concepts as analytical instruments which can help to guide contemporary struggles. Massimo Modonesi is a Professor in the Political and Social Sciences
Faculty of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He is also the Director of the Social Sciences Latino-American Council (CLACSO) and Cocoordinator of the Mexico Social Conflict Analysis Committee. NEXT READ

The Gloss of Harmony focuses on agencies of the United Nations, examining the paradox of entrusting relatively powerless and underfunded organisations with the responsibility of tackling some of the essential problems of our time. The authors of this collection look not only at the official objectives and unintended consequences of international governance but also at how international organisations involve collective and individual actors in policy making, absorb critique, attempt to neutralise political conflict and create new political fields with local actors and national governments. The Gloss of Harmony identifies the micro-social processes and complexities within multilateral organisations which have, up to now, been largely invisible. This book will have wide appeal not only to students and academics in anthropology, business studies and sociology but also to all practioners concerned with international governance.

Following the Money
Comparing Parliamentary Public Accounts Committees Rick Stapenhurst, Riccardo Pelizzo and Kerry Jacobs This report reexamines the ways in which parliamentary committees can enhance democratic governance. Revisiting a report first published 10 years ago, it reasseses the ways in which Public Accounts Committees (PACS) work in practice, and whether they continue to fulfil expectations as important guarantors of good governance. Noting that PACS themselves, and our knowledge about them, have evolved substantially in the intervening decade, this volume examines the original concept of public financial accountability, noting its origins in the 19th century, evaluates the findings of the original study, analyses research data produced in the aftermath of the first report and considers the practices and challenges facing PACs in the second decade of the 21st century, such as capacity building, independence and information exchange. Prisoners of the White House The Isolation of America's Presidents and the Crisis of Leadership Kenneth T. Walsh Prisoners of the White House looks at the isolation experienced by presidents of the United States in the White House, a habitat almost guaranteed to keep America’s commander in chief far removed from everyday life. The authors look at how this is emerging as one of the most serious dilemmas facing the American presidency. As presidents have become more isolated, the role of the presidential pollster has grown. Ken Walsh has been given exclusive access to the polls and confidential memos received by presidents over the years, and has interviewed presidential pollsters directly to gain their unique perspective. Prisoners of the White House gets inside the bubble and punctures the mythology surrounding the presidency.

The Battle for America The Tea Party, Occupy, and Their Impact on Mainstream Politics David Meyer The Tea Party and Occupy movements illustrate both the high aspirations Americans have for their government and the deep disappointments they feel in it. Both movements have adopted different strategies for trying to realise their distinct visions of the American Dream. This book focuses on the time between the election of Barack Obama in 2008 and his re-election in November 2012. Meyer argues that protest politics, represented by both the Tea Party and Occupy, respond to - and influence - politics in mainstream political institutions. The Battle for America tells the stories of two emblematic movements and examines the way that protest politics of any era shape the greater political milieu in which they operate.

The risk is there because students are not to be seen as objects to be moulded and disciplined, but as subjects of action and responsibility. The Beautiful Risk of Education is organised around a critical discussion of seven key educational concepts: creativity, communication, teaching, learning, emancipation, democracy, and virtuosity. Texting Toward Utopia Kids, Writing, and Resistance Ben Agger This book examines the contemporary era where parents complain that children today don’t do their homework because they are distracted by the Internet, texting and video games. Texting Towards Utopia presents the writings of today’s children and develops the argument that this is actually a time of mass literacy, in which young people write furiously, albeit often below the adult radar. Agger argues that where texting replaces textbooks, the writing may be emoticon-laden, slangy, or terse, but it still profound, as children (and their parents) engage in resistance and write for a better world. This book is a guide to understanding the meeting point between a new generation of children and new communication technologies. Ben Agger is the author of many previous books on media and critical

This significantly revised edition of the landmark anthropological classic Kuru Sorcery brings up to date the anthropological contribution to understanding disease, the medical research that resulted in two medical Nobel Prizes, and the views of people who endured the epidemic and who still believe that sorcerers, rather than cannibalism, caused kuru. Mythologizing Black Women
Unveiling White Men's Racist and Sexist Deep Frame Brittany C. Slatton In this book Brittany C. Slatton uses innovative internet research methods to reveal contemporary prejudices about relationship partners. In doing so she thoroughly refutes the popular ideology of a post-racial America. Slatton examines the 'deep frame' of white men found in opinions and emotional reactions to black women and their body types, personalities, behaviours, and styles of speech. Their internet responses to questionnaires shows how they treat as common sense radicalised, gendered, and classed versions of black women. Mythologizing Black Women argues that the internet acts as a backstage setting, allowing white men to anonymously express raw feelings about race and sexuality without the fear of reprimand. The Myth of Liberal Ascendancy Corporate Dominance from the Great Depression to the Great Recession G. Williams Domhoff Based on new archival research, G. Williams Domhoff challenges popular conceptions of the 1930s New Deal, arguing instead that this period was one of increasing corporate dominance in government affairs. While FDR’s New Deal brought sweeping legislation, the tide turned quickly after 1938. From that year onward nearly every major new economic law passed by Congress showed the mark of corporate dominance. Domhoff concludes that in terms of economic influence, liberalism was on a long steady decline, and that ironically it was the successes of the civil rights, feminist, environmental, and gay-lesbian movements that led to the final defeat of the liberal-labour alliance after 1968.

Rethinking Contemporary Social Theory Roberta Garner, Black Hawk Hancock and Grace Budrys Rethinking Contemporary Social Theory outlines a new theoretical paradigm emerging from out of social construction theory, conflict theory, Marxism and critical theory and argues that these insights are redefining social theory as a whole. The authors select ten fields within sociology and in each one trace the reception and impact of the new paradigm. The fields include gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, media and the sociology of family life. Drawing on Thomas Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, the authors identify causes for this paradigm shift, which include the contributions of specific individuals, the general intellectual climate and various social changes such as globalisation and neoliberalism.
