A modern day David and Goliath

Blacklisted

The Secret War between Big Business and Union Activists Dave Smith and Phillip Chamberlain ‘Blacklist - A list of people or groups regarded as unacceptable or untrustworthy and often marked down for punishmant or exclusion.’ The New Oxford Dictionary of English’ The Consulting Association blacklist scandal was the worst human rights abuse of workers in the UK for 60 years. This book tells the new and controversial story of the illegal strategies that multinational construction companies were willing to resort to in their attempt to keep union activists away from their places of work. This is a story of a bitter unionised struggle, where collusion with the police and security services resulted in victimisation, violence and unemployment leading to the destruction of families and communities. Based on first hand accounts of the workers, Blacklisted reveals how they unionised major construction projects, how they were unlawfully victimised for their troubles and how they finally won justice for their years of pain. From building sites to the High Court and parliament, this is a story of ordinary working people taking on some of the most powerful multinational construction firms in the world: a modern-day David and Goliath. Dave Smith is a blacklisted union activist from the construction industry,

and award winning campaigner on human rights, health and safety, antifascism and employment rights issues. He currently works as a trade union education tutor. Phillip Chamberlain is an experienced investigative journalist who has written for the Guardian, Observer and the Independent amongst others. He is also a senior lecturer in journalism at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

Blacklisting destroyed the lives of many workers and their families over the years. It took courage and determination to stand up to it and expose its operation. This book makes a significant contribution to telling the truth of the blacklist. John McDonnell MP

A new legacy drawn from a lifetime's work

Frances Stracey was an original and committed interpreter of the Situationist International, who saw their work not just as art history but as contributing to an ongoing challenge to commodified life, down into our own times. McKenzie Wark, author of The Beach

The Situationist International has provided inspiration for generations of revolutionary activists and artists. This is no less the case today, with new waves of anti-capitalist protest deploying political strategies of aesthetic disruption pioneered by the Situationists. This book addresses and seeks to understand their continued relevance through investigating the idea from which they took their name: the constructed situation. Beginning with a deep philosophical genealogy, Stracey methodically examines the Situationists' development and realisations through a constellation of extraordinary case studies. Finally, on this basis, she considers Situationism's legacy afresh. Never before has this movement been looked at through the prism of their political interventions. The result is a radically new approach to the Situationist International. The outcome of many years of dedicated research, Constructed Situations consolidates Stracey’s groundbreaking studies and finally exposes the movement's framework, which she was only able to formulate in the final years of her life. Frances Stracey (1963-2009) was Senior Lecturer in the History of Art Department, University College London, and organising committee member for the 'Marxism and the Interpretation of Culture' seminar, London.

Israel's laboratory of repression

War Against the People

Israel, the Palestinians and Global Pacification Jeff Halper War Against the People focuses on the rise of 'securocratic war.' As hegemons at all levels of the world-system strive to secure domination, they combine militaries, security agencies and police forces into an effective instrument of what Jeff Halper calls 'global pacification'. In this book, Halper, an Israeli anthropologist and activist, casts Israel as a pivotal actor in enforcing global pacification. Examining the techniques and weaponry of securocratic war that Israel has developed over the past century in trying to pacify the Palestinians, particularly in the ‘laboratory’ of the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Halper argues that Israel’s strategy of ‘globalising Palestine,’ of exporting its model and instruments of control, provides crucial contributions to efforts at pacification worldwide. The book provides a disturbing window into the workings of state violence and suggests ways in which activists can fight back. Jeff Halper is the head of the Israeli Committee Against House

Demolitions (ICAHD). He is the author of Between Redemption and Revival: The Jewish Yishuv in Jerusalem in the Nineteenth Century (Westview, 1991), An Israeli in Palestine (Pluto, 2010) and Obstacles to Peace (Fifth Edition, 2013).

By interviewing Palestinian women political detainees and by situating their experiences both historically and globally, Abdo fills an important gap in both feminist and nonfeminist scholarship on gender and resistance. Simona Sharoni

PROFESSOR, GENDER & WOMEN’S STUDIES, STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, PLATTSBURGH AND AUTHOR OF GENDER AND THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT: THE POLITICS OF WOMEN’S RESISTANCE

Women throughout the world have always played their part in struggles against colonialism, imperialism and other forms of oppression. However, there are few books on Arab political prisoners, fewer still on the Palestinian women who have been detained in their thousands for their political activism and resistance. Nahla Abdo's Captive Revolution seeks to break the silence on Palestinian women political detainees, providing a vital contribution to research on women, revolution, national liberation and anti-colonial resistance. Based on interviews with the women themselves, as well as her own experiences as a former political prisoner, Abdo draws on a wealth of oral history and primary research in order to analyse their anti-colonial struggle, their agency and appalling treatment. Making crucial comparisons with the experiences of female political detainees in other conflicts, and emphasising the vital role Palestinian political culture and memorialisation of the Nakba have had on their resilience and resistance, Captive Revolution is a rich and revealing addition to our knowledge of this little-studied phenomenon. Nahla Abdo is an Arab feminist activist, and Professor of Sociology at

Carleton University, Ottawa. She has published widely on women, racism, nationalism, and the state in the Middle East, with a special focus on Palestinian women.

A palimpsest in Tel Aviv

White City, Black City

Architecture and War in Tel Aviv and Jaffa Sharon Rotbard Published originally in Hebrew in 2005, Sharon Rotbard's widely acclaimed, groundbreaking and controversial book White City, Black City challenges Tel Aviv's official narrative. The book shows how Tel Aviv’s tale of a modernist 'White City' had 'emerged from the dunes' and gained international recognition which led to Tel Aviv’s inscription in UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list, and how it served as a fundamental element in the building of both the city and the national identity, culture and rhetoric. However, behind this skyline a palimpsest remains of a city whose history has been buried. White City, Black City offers a new story, in which Tel Aviv is born in Jaffa and is shaped according to its conflict with Jaffa, thus influencing the fate of Palestine, Israel and the Middle East. This new urban parable is not only about architecture, building and writing, but also at its heart about war, destruction and erasure.

University in Washington DC. He is author of Economic Justice and Democracy (2005), Green Economics (2011), and Of the People, By the People: The Case for a Participatory Economy (2012).

Lucidly written, comprehensive in coverage, based on expert understanding and insight. Noam Chomsky

Most economists worship the market, describing it as a fair, impersonal arbiter of efficiency. Robin Hahnel brilliantly debunks this religion, providing powerful explanations of market failures on both micro- and macroeconomic levels. He combines clear exposition and mathematical illustration with a compelling passion for progressive social change. Nancy Folbre, Professor of

Economics, University of Massachusetts

This revised edition of ABCs is a lively and accessible introduction to modern political economy. Informed by the work of Marx, Veblen, Kalecki, Robinson, Minsky and other great political economists, Robin Hahnel provides the essential tools needed to understand economic issues today. Dispelling myths about financial liberalisation, fiscal austerity, globalisation and free markets, ABCs offers a critical perspective on our present system and outlines clear alternatives for the future. This second edition applies the analytical tools developed to help readers understand the origins of the financial crisis of 2007, the ensuing 'Great Recession', and why government policies in Europe and North America over the past six years have failed to improve matters for the majority of their citizens. The second edition also helps explain what is causing climate change and what will be required if it is to be reversed effectively and fairly.

The political economy of state repression

Crisis and Control The Militarization of Protest Policing Lesley J. Wood Crisis and Control explains how neoliberal transformations of political and economic systems are militarizing the policing of protest, based on a compelling empirical study of police agencies and practices from 1995 until the present. Lesley J. Wood shows that the increasing role of the security and defence industries, professional police associations, anti-terrorism initiatives and ‘best practices’ in policing networks have accelerated the use of ‘less lethal’ weapons, pre-emptive arrests, infiltration and barricading strategies against protesters. The book draws on the rhetorical frameworks of Bourdieu and Boltanski to analyse court transcripts, police reports, policy, training materials and the conference programmes of professional police organisations to argue that police agencies are neither omnipotent strategists, nor simple tools of the elite, but institutions struggling to maintain legitimacy, resources and autonomy in a changing field.

In this balanced, detailed and convincing look at global policing, Lesley Wood traces the complex relations between the police force as an institution and its neoliberal context. Avoiding the temptation to reduce the police's function to simply that of some anonymous capitalist force, this is a necessary and rare account that is vital for anyone interested in protest policing and its increasing militarization, as well as wider forms of global social control under neoliberalism. Unflinching alternatives to the neoliberal narrative

Polarizing Development

Alternatives to Neoliberalism and the Crisis Edited by Lucia Pradella and Thomas Marois The global economic crisis has exposed the limits of neoliberalism and intensified social polarization. Amid increasing social resistance and opposition, however, neoliberalism prevails globally. Within political economic debates, however, radical alternatives are rarely debated or are reduced to new Keynesian and new developmental agendas, which fail to address existing class divisions and imperialist relations of domination. This unique collection of essays polarizes the debate between radical and reformist alternatives by exploring head-on the antagonistic structure of capitalist development in Latin America, South Asia, Europe, the US and the Middle East. The contributors ground the question of alternatives in an international, non-Eurocentric and avowedly Marxian analysis of the capitalist system and its crises. This new generation of scholars has written accessible yet theoretically informed and empirically rich chapters elaborating radically different worldwide strategies for moving beyond neoliberalism, and beyond capitalism. The intent is to provoke critical reflection and positive action towards substantive change. Lucia Pradella works at the University of Venice, Ca’ Foscari, and is a Research Associate in the SOAS Department of Development Studies. She is conducting research on the working poor in Western Europe, globalisation, and the history of political economy. She is the author of Globalisation and the Critique of Political Economy (2014). Thomas Marois is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Development Studies, SOAS, University of London. He works in the field of comparative political economy researching problems of finance, development, privatisation, and alternatives to neoliberal capitalism. He is the author of States, Banks and Crisis: Emerging Finance Capitalism in Mexico and Turkey (2012).

Poverty, it seems, is a constant in today's news, usually the result of famine, exclusion or conflict. In Blaming the Victim, Jairo Lugo-Ocando sets out to deconstruct and reconsider the variety of ways in which the global news media misrepresent and decontextualise the causes and consequences of poverty worldwide. The result is that the fundamental determinant of poverty - inequality - is removed from their accounts. The book asks many biting questions. When, and how, does poverty become newsworthy? How does ideology come into play when determining the ways in which 'poverty' is constructed in newsrooms, and how do the resulting narratives frame the issue? And why do so many journalists and news editors tend to obscure the structural causes of poverty? In analysing the processes of news production and presentation around the world, Lugo-Ocando reveals that the newsmakers' agendas are often as problematic as the geopolitics they seek to represent. This groundbreaking study reframes the ways in which we can think and write about the enduring global injustice of poverty.

Reclaiming Marxism as neoliberalism falters

We Make Our Own History

Marxism and Social Movements in the Twilight of Neoliberalism Laurence Cox and Alf Gunvald Nilsen We live in the twilight of neoliberalism: the ruling classes can no longer rule as before, and ordinary people are no longer willing to be ruled in the old way. Pursued by global elites since the 1970s, neoliberalism is defined by dispossession and ever-increasing inequality. The refusal to continue to be ruled like this - ‘ya basta!’ - appears in an arc of resistance stretching from rural India to the cities of the global North. From this network of movements, new visions are emerging of a future beyond neoliberalism. We Make Our Own History responds to these visions by reclaiming Marxism as a theory born from activist experience and practice. This book marks a break both with established social movement theory and with those forms of Marxism which treat the practice of social movement organising as an unproblematic process. It shows how movements can develop from local conflicts to global struggles; how neoliberalism operates as a social movement from above, and how popular struggles can create new worlds from below. Laurence Cox directs the MA in Community Education, Equality and Social Activism at the National University of Ireland Maynooth and coedits the social movements journal Interface. He is active in a wide range of movements and co-editor of Marxism and Social Movements (2013) and Understanding European Movements (2013). Alf Gunvald Nilsen is Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology, University of Bergen. His research focuses on social movements in the global South. He is the author of Dispossession and Resistance in India (2012) and co-editor of Social Movements in the Global South (2011) and Marxism and Social Movements (2013).

Fighting Corporate Abuse demonstrates, through compelling and revelatory analysis, the legislation and regulation needed to deal with the abuses in the corporate sector that have been revealed in recent years. It highlights the more general contribution of company law and practice to the current crisis in capitalism. The first section develops a controversial argument, using detailed illustrations and vivid examples, which show how the various abuses of predatory capitalism have been carried out through the manipulation of the corporate form and the creation of highly complex corporate groups. The authors, all experts in their fields, tackle headon the issues of tax evasion, extraction of value and asset stripping, environmental destruction and managerial self-interest. In doing so, they paint a picture of a system that is abusive and degenerated, but also a system which can be reformed. In the run-up to the UK general election, the authors develop a set of practical proposals for an incoming government, outlining how each of these abuses could be curtailed and how a more acceptable and accountable form of corporate capitalism can be developed through national and international action. Six decades of exile

Out of Place, Out of Time

Refugees, Rights and the (Re)Making of Palestine/Israel Susan M. Akram and Terrance Rempel Forced displacement is one of the primary and most visible consequences of the conflict over Palestine/Israel. In this much-needed book, Susan M. Akram and Terrance Rempel examine the role of law and politics in the creation and resolution of one of the largest and most protracted refugee situations in the world today. The authors review the historical and political background to Palestinian displacement, the situation of refugees in exile and efforts to resolve the issue over more than six decades. Drawing on years of research and advocacy, they examine the legal framework and related state practice governing solutions for refugees worldwide. They also consider the collective and individual rights involved in the Palestinian case, and discuss options for solutions from the perspective of global precedent and comprehensive plans of action implemented in comparative mass refugee flows. In placing refugees at the centre of its legal and political analysis, Out of Place, Out of Time is a vital intervention in the search for a lasting settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Countering Zionist dominance, radically

Zionism and its Discontents Radical Currents in Israel/Palestine Ran Greenstein

Mainstream nationalist narratives and political movements have dominated the Israeli-Palestinian situation for too long. In this muchneeded book, Ran Greenstein challenges this hegemony by focusing on four different, but at the same time connected, attempts which stood up to Zionist dominance and the settlement project before and after 1948. Greenstein begins by addressing the role of the Palestinian Communist Party, and then the bi-nationalist movement, before moving on to the period after 1948 when Palestinian attempts to challenge their unjust conditions of marginalisation became more frequent. Finally, he confronts the radical anti-Zionist Matzpen group, which operated from the early 1960s–80s. In addition to analyses of the shifting positions of these movements, Greenstein examines perspectives regarding a set of conceptual issues: colonialism and settlement, race/ethnicity and class, questions of identity, rights and power, and how, such as in the case of South Africa, these relations should be seen as global. Ran Greenstein is Associate Professor at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. He studied at the University of Haifa and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is author of Genealogies of Conflict: Class, Identity and State in Palestine/Israel and South Africa (1995), and editor of Comparative Perspectives on South Africa (1998).

Revealing corporate murder on Papua New Guinea

State Crime on the Margins of Empire

Rio Tinto, the War on Bougainville and Resistance to Mining Kristian Lasslett Series: State Crime This book offers a pioneering window into the elusive workings of state-corporate crime within the mining industries. It follows a single, brutal campaign of resistance organised by indigenous activists on the island of Papua New Guinea, who struggled against a decision to close a Rio Tinto-owned copper mine, and investigates the subsequent state-corporate response, which led to the shocking loss of some 10,000 lives. Drawing on internal records and interviews with senior officials, Kristian Lasslett examines how an articulation of capitalist growth mediated through patrimonial politics, imperial state power, largescale mining, and clan-based, rural society, prompted an ostensibly ‘responsible’ corporate citizen, and liberal state actors, to organise a counterinsurgency campaign punctuated with gross human rights abuses. State Crime on the Margins of Empire represents a unique intervention rooted in a classical Marxist tradition that challenges positivist streams of criminological scholarship, in order to illuminate with greater detail the historical forces faced by communities in the global South caught in the increasingly violent dynamics of the extractive industries. Kristian Lasslett is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Ulster and sits on the International State Crime Initiative’s executive board. He is editor of the State Crime Testimony Project and joint editor-in-chief of State Crime.

A political account of a radical anthropologist

Bruno Latour Reassembling the Political Graham Harman Series: Modern European Thinkers

Bruno Latour, the French anthropologist, sociologist and longestablished superstar in the social sciences is revisited in this pioneering account of his ever-evolving political philosophy. Breaking from the traditional focus on his metaphysics, most recently seen in Harman’s book Prince of Networks, the author instead begins with the Hobbesian and even Machiavellian underpinnings of Latour’s early period, encountering his shift towards Carl Schmitt before finishing with his final development into the Lippmann/Dewey debate. Harman brings these twists and turns into sharp focus in terms of Latour’s personal political thinking. Along with Latour’s most important articles on political themes, the book chooses three works as exemplary of the distinct periods in Latour’s thinking: The Pasteurization of France, Politics of Nature, and the recently published An Inquiry Into Modes of Existence, as his conception of politics evolves from a global power struggle between individuals, to the fabrication of fragile parliamentary networks, to just one mode of existence among many others. Graham Harman is Distinguished University Professor at the American

University in Cairo, Egypt. He is the author of numerous books, including Tool-Being: Heidegger and the Metaphysics of Objects (2002) and Prince of Networks: Bruno Latour and Metaphysics (2009).

Religion in extremis

Checkpoint, Temple, Church and Mosque

A Collaborative Ethnography of War and Peace Jonathan Spencer, Jonathan Goodhand, Shahul Hasbullah, Bart Klem, Benedikt Korf and K. Tudor Silva Series: Anthropology, Culture and Society Is religion best seen as only a cause of war, or is it a source of comfort for those caught up in conflict? Checkpoint, Temple, Church and Mosque is based on fieldwork in Sri Lanka’s most religiously diverse and politically troubled region in the closing years of the civil war. It provides a series of new arguments about the promise of a religiously based civil society, and the strengths and weaknesses of religious organisations involved in conflict mediation. The book argues that for people trapped in long conflicts, religion plays a contradictory role, often acting as a stabilising force but also, in certain situations, acting as a source of new conflict. Additionally, war itself can lead to profound changes in religious institutions: Catholic priests engage with Buddhist monks and new Muslim leaders, while Hindu temples and Pentecostal churches offer the promise of healing. This book will provoke new debate and will be of great interest to students of anthropology, development studies, religious studies and peace/conflict studies. A novel and crucial contribution to the study of migration through the lens of political economy, applicable to sociology, anthropology, and historical studies, [...] a rich and comprehensive collection that is relevant to the most contemporary debates. Immanuel Ness

PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE, BROOKLYN COLLEGE, CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK

The states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar) form the largest destination for labour migration in the global South. In all of these states, however, the majority of the working population is composed of temporary, migrant workers with no citizenship rights. The cheap labour power these workers provide has created the extraordinary development boom across the region, and neighbouring countries are almost fully dependent on the labour markets of the Gulf to employ their working populations. For these reasons, the Gulf takes a central place in contemporary debates around migration and labour in the global economy. This book attempts to bring together and explore these issues. The relationship between ‘citizen’ and ‘non-citizen’ holds immense significance for understanding the construction of class, gender, city and state in the Gulf. Bringing together experts on the Gulf, Transit States confronts the precarious working conditions of migrants in an accessible, yet in-depth manner. Abdulhadi Khalaf is a senior lecturer in the Sociology Department at

Lund University. omar alshehabi writes from Bahrain and is Director of the Gulf Centre

for Development Policies. He has previously worked at the World Bank and the IMF as well as McKinsey & Co. Adam Hanieh is Senior Lecturer in Development Studies at the School

African forms of protest

The Making of an African Working Class

Politics, Law, and Cultural Protest in the Manual Workers Union of Botswana Pnina Werbner Series: Anthropology, Culture and Society It is now 50 years since E.P. Thompson published his classic, The Making of the English Working Class. The Making of an African Working Class follows Thompson in exploring the formation of working-class identity among low-paid African workers. In arguing for a radical public anthropology of worker identity, the book seeks to analyse the cultural, legal, ideological and experiential dimensions of labour activism often neglected in other labour studies. Pnina Werbner shows that by fusing cosmopolitan and local popular cultural forms of protest, unionists have created a distinctive, vernacular way of being a worker in Botswana: one that does not deny workers’ roots at home or in the countryside, while being cognisant of a wider world of cosmopolitan labour rights. The assertion of workingclass dignity, honour and respect, Werbner argues, is a powerful motivating force for manual workers. Against legal-sceptical approaches, The Making of an African Working Class argues that in challenging the government - their employer - in court, manual workers’ protests and mobilisation are deeply embedded in ethics, social justice and the law. Pnina Werbner is Professor Emerita of Social Anthropology, Keele University, author of ‘The Manchester Migration Trilogy’ - The Migration Process (1990/2002), Imagined Diasporas (2002), Pilgrims of Love (2003) and editor of several theoretical collections on hybridity, cosmopolitanism, multiculturalism, migration and citizenship, including Anthropology and the New Cosmopolitanism and The Political Aesthetics of Global Revolt.

A violent, symbiotic relationship in Colombia

Paramilitarism and Neoliberalism Violent Systems of Capital Accumulation in Colombia and Beyond Jasmin Hristov

November 2014 224pp 215mm x 135mm Hb 978-0-7453-3501-8 £50

The people of Colombia have long been subject to a specific form of violence: paramilitarism. An embodiment of the underbelly of capitalist accumulation, this form of pervasive violence expresses the exacerbation of social inequalities and class formation under capitalism. In Paramilitarism and Neoliberalism, Jasmin Hristov theorises this extreme phenomemon in light of forced displacement, labour repression, subjugation of social movements, decentralisation of violence, drug trafficking and the emergence of a variety of parainstitutional armed actors across Latin America. The activities of paramilitary groups in the era after demobilisation, their involvement in human rights violations, and their multilevel support networks inside major state institutions are documented, with a particular emphasis on violent dispossession and illegal land appropriation that has benefited agro-industries and mining enterprises. Hristov adopts a Marxist political economy approach, combined with a global sociology perspective, allowing for an expansive and deep-reaching understanding of paramilitarism as a phenomenon with many faces, whilst emphasising how capitalism cannot function without it. Jasmin Hristov is a sessional lecturer of Sociology at the University of Toronto, York University, and Trent University in Canada. She is a research associate at the Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean and author of Blood and Capital: The Paramilitarisation of Colombia (2009). She has also had her work featured in the Journal of Peacebuilding and Development, the Journal of Peasant Studies, Social Justice, Latin American Perspectives and Labour, Capital and Society.

A study of fieldwork in contemporary settings

Organisational Anthropology

Doing Ethnography in and Among Complex Organisations Edited by Christina Garsten and Anette Nyqvist Series: Anthropology, Culture and Society Organisational Anthropology, newly published in paperback, is a pioneering analysis of doing ethnographic fieldwork in different types of complex organisations. The book focuses on the process of initiating contact, establishing rapport and gaining the trust of the organisations’ members. The contributors work from the premise that doing fieldwork in an organisation shares essential characteristics with fieldwork in more ‘classical’ anthropological environments, but that it also poses some particular challenges to the ethnographer. These include the ideological or financial interests of the organisations, protection of resources and competition between organisations. Organisational Anthropology brings together crucial aspects of doing anthropology in contemporary complex settings, and will have wide appeal to students, researchers and academics in anthropology and organisation studies. Christina Garsten is Professor at the Department of Social

Anthropology at Stockholm University and Chair of the Stockholm Centre for Organisational Research (S) at Stockholm University and Stockholm School of Economics. She is the author of Workplace Vagabonds: Career and Community in Changing Worlds of Work (2008) and co-editor of Ethical Dilemmas in Management Organizing (2009), Transnational Accountability (2008) and Transparency in a New Global Order (2008). Anette Nyqvist is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social

She is the author of Opening the Orange Envelope: Risk and Responsibility in the Remaking of Sweden’s National Pension System (2008).

July 2014 272pp 229mm x 152mm Hb 978-1-6120-5558-9 £18.99

Not available in North America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand

This long-awaited book provides remarkable lessons of history, combined with the advice and counsel that are valuable to all world leaders. Jimmy Carter

During his momentous time as Secretary-General of the UN, Kofi Annan played a decisive role in launching the Millennium Development Goals, establishing the International Criminal Court, and articulating the Responsibility to Protect as a guiding principle for international action. In 2001 - just after 9/11 - he and the UN jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize, 'for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.' These and other crucial events - including the crises over Kosovo and East Timor, and the war in Iraq - are encapsulated in this book of Kofi Annan's key speeches from throughout his term of office. The selection gives a broad view of Annan's most pressing concerns, and the eloquence with which he addressed them. Covering subjects from development, health and climate change to the prevention of genocide and the ideal of diversity, these statements show how deeply involved the UN was in the most important issues of the era. We the Peoples is a timely and much-needed reminder of Annan's ideas and priorities; his words on war, peace, humanity and 'man’s inhumanity to man' still resonate today. This book will offer many pointers for maintaining and developing the UN as a vital instrument for humanity in the coming decades. Kofi A. Annan was the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations,

serving two terms from January 1, 1997, to December 31, 2006, and was the first to emerge from the ranks of UN staff. In 2001 Kofi Annan and the United Nations were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, with the citation praising his leadership for bringing new life to the organisation.

Strengthening Governance Globally

Forecasting the Next 50 Years Barry B. Hughes, Devin K. Joshi , Jonathan D. Moyer, Timothy D. Sisk and José R. Each volume considers one key aspect of how development unfolds globally and how better to move it in desired directions. This volume identifies the provision of security, the building of government capacity, and the broadening of inclusion of governance on which high-income countries have traditionally made long historical transitions. In contrast, many developing countries today struggle with all three governance transition dimensions simultaneously. Strengthening Governance Globally uses the growing empirical database on governance variables to understand historical change. Barry B. Pedagogy of Commitment Paulo Freire This first English translation of Pedagogy of Commitment takes readers deep into the acts and meaning of living a life of community and social commitment. Paulo Freire discusses how, for teachers specifically, this commitment is not only to students, to the underprivileged or to the education of those who speak a different language, but to the transformation of the self to become more deeply responsive to the needs of social transformations. More than any other Freire book, this speaks directly and plainly to the lives of individuals and to teachers. It is an inspiring and passionate call from a global giant of progressive education. To the Cloud

Big Data in a Turbulent World Vincent Mosco Cloud computing and big data are arguably the most significant forces in information technology today. In the wake of revelations about National Security Agency (NSA) activities, many of which occur ‘in the cloud’, this book offers both enlightenment and a critical view. Vincent Mosco explores where the cloud originated, what it means, and how important it is for business, government and citizens. He describes the intense competition among cloud companies like Amazon and Google, the spread of the cloud to government agencies like the controversial NSA, and the astounding growth of entire cloud cities in China. Is the cloud the long-promised information utility that will solve many of the world’s economic and social problems? Or is it just marketing hype? To the Cloud provides the first thorough analysis of the potential and the problems of a technology that may very well disrupt the world. Vincent Mosco (PhD, Harvard University) is Professor Emeritus of

The Battle for America

The Tea Party, Occupy, and their impact on Mainstream Politics David Meyer The Tea Party and Occupy—two large, volatile and diverse movements that have captured significant political space in recent years—illustrate both the high aspirations Americans have for their government and the deep disappointments they feel in it. These movements offer contrasting visions of America’s past and, more importantly, its future. This book focuses on the time between the election of Barack Obama in 2008 and his re-election in November 2012. Meyer argues that protest politics, represented by both organisations, respond to— and influence—politics in mainstream political institutions. The Battle for America tells the stories of two emblematic movements, shows how each relates to mainstream politics and policy, and examines the way that protest politics of any era shape the greater political milieu in which they operate. David Meyer is Professor of Sociology and Political Science at the

University of California–Irvine. He is the author or editor of six books, including The Politics of Protest: Social Movements in America.

Public Administration Research Strategies, Concepts, and Methods B. Voices of LGBTQ Students and Teachers Problematizing the Culture of Schooling Edited by Anna V. Wilson and Veronica Bloomfield Despite recent changes in legislation, the needs of LGBTQ students, families, and teachers remain marginalised in the curriculum, the physical spaces of schools, and the minds of many well-meaning educators. Voices of LGBTQ Students and Teachers problematises the heteronormativity inherent in the culture of schools, pointing out inequalities, exposing assumptions, and providing concrete examples of transformation. Drawing from personal history, classroom experience, and empirical research data, this volume brings together a diversity of perspectives in a unified statement to the field of education: educators must be at the forefront of creating safe and nurturing environments for our LGBTQ students.

Capitalism: Should You Buy It?

An Invitation to Political Economy Charles Derber and Yale R. Magrass Before there was economics, there was political economy, an interdisciplinary adventure boldly and critically seeking to understand capitalism. Over time, the social sciences evolved into specific disciplines - economics, sociology, political science - that less often questioned capitalist perspectives and the state. Contrasting three traditions - neoclassicism, Keynesianism, and neo-Marxism - Capitalism: Should You Buy It? traces the historical development of each and evaluates whether they view capitalism as the root cause of or the solution to the pressing problems now facing humanity. This accessible and hopeful book is a call to everyone citizen, student, public intellectual - to revive the critical edge towards capitalism. Charles Derber is Professor of Sociology at Boston College. He is the

author of many books including Sociopathic Society, Hidden Power, Greed to Green, Marx’s Ghost, The Wilding of America and Morality Wars. Yale R. Magrass is Professor of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. He is the author of three other books and more than thirty articles on political and social theory.

Harold Garfinkel and Anne Rawls Although not widely known, Harold Garfinkel pioneered the use of ethnomethodology as a field of inquiry in sociology. He influenced generations of scholars and researchers. This expanded and updated edition of Garfinkel’s classic Studies in Ethnomethodology includes, for the first time, additional Garfinkel papers that helped form the author’s ideas. This is the fullest and most authoritative edition ever published. It gives readers a chance to see how Garfinkel developed his pathbreaking ideas and later expanded them into new lines of thought. ‘Garfinkel’s arguments are expressed with a power and richness that is singular and imperishable... The renewed availability of these classic studies will give rise to the widest understanding of Garfinkel’s seminal arguments.’ Times Higher Education Supplement Harold Garfinkel is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at UCLA and the author of the classic book, Studies in Ethnomethodology. Anne Rawls , Professor of Sociology at Bentley College, Massachusetts, is the author of Epistemology and Practice: Durkheim's The Elementary Forms of Religous Life (Cambridge University Press 2004).

They and We Racial and Ethnic Relations in the United States—and Beyond, 7th Edition Peter I. Rose The first edition appeared shortly after the March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his memorable ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. They and We has now been now read by tens of thousands, and has been updated and expanded five times. It maintains the author’s original intention to provide a critical study of America’s people, their origins, and encounters by examining prejudice, discrimination and minority status, in jargon-free prose. This new edition covers recent developments, including the rise of Islamophobia in the wake of 9/11. An entirely new chapter compares perspectives in the United States with situations overseas, particularly with regard to nativist and nationalist movements and the rise of xenophobia in this society and in many others.

Peace Ecology

Randall Amster Peace Ecology presents a cutting-edge exploration of an emerging paradigm that links the essence of peace and non-violence with the tenets of ecology and the principles of environmentalism. Looking at issues including food justice, water sharing, climate change, peace zones and the ‘free economy,’ this book considers examples and illustrations from around the world where people, communities, and nations are employing the teachings of ecology as a tool for mitigating conflict and promoting peace. RANDALL AMSTER, J.D., Ph.D. is the Director of the Justice and Peace Studies program at Georgetown University. Among his works are the coedited volumes Building Cultures of Peace: Transdisciplinary Voices of Hope and Action (2009) and Exploring the Power of Nonviolence: Peace, Politics, and Practice (2013). Politics in Popular Movies

John S. Nelson Popular movies are, surprisingly to some, full of politics. These tend to be the portentous politics of state or war; but often, they are also the everyday politics of family, romance, business, church, and school. Politics in Popular Movies analyses well-known films in four genres: horror, war, thriller, and science fiction. Its aims are to appreciate specific movies and their shared forms, to understand their many politics, and to provoke some rollicking conversations. The book’s style is ambitious, playful, and engaging. It explores how thrillers prefigured American experiences of 9/11 and then shaped aspects of the War on Terror. It also details how horror films embrace new media, while others use ultra-violence to spur political action. It then traces how recent war movies develop a fascinating range of political arguments, and it appreciates ways that science-fiction movies reflect populist politics from the Occupy and Tea Party movements. JOHN S. NELSON teaches political theory and communication at The University of Iowa, where he has directed the Project on Rhetoric of Inquiry, the Bridging Project, and the Honors Program. He has edited Poroi, an electronic journal. His books include Video Rhetorics (1999) and Tropes of Politics (1998).
