My responsibilities are everything from organising events, to proofing promotional material and attending Chamber meetings. I chose to take on this job role, as I wanted to create an awareness of Plymouth as an enterprising city and show the opportunities available for young people. I want to provide young people of Plymouth with a voice within the city in relation to the future development of the city. CHAIR OF Young people who have potential, in any area of work whether it is arts, business, sport, or science should be allowed to reach their full PLYMOUTH YOUNG CHAMBER capability and be given the chance to achieve their best. I also wanted to gain events management experience to help improve my job prospects. The best bit about this job is working with directors/senior people.

Chris Maslen

MARKETING ASSISTANT, PTG ENGINEERING LTD

I achieved a BA (Hons) Business Studies degree from the University of Glamorgan but due to a lack of experience I was finding it difficult to get a job. Through Graduate Business Partnerships, which is a paid project-based placement managed by the Universities of Plymouth and Exeter, I was placed with PTG Engineering for 20 weeks, during which time I helped them to develop their marketing strategy. I also assisted with rebranding, including the company logo and a complete overhaul of colour and design, which was used for new product brochures, flyers, handouts, letterheads and business cards. I also investigated overseas markets and suggested new ways of packaging products to improve the look and also improve the protection of the equipment. Working on this project has really improved my CV.

TRAINEE PR ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE

My parents both studied in school up to GCSEs but did not have the opportunity to go to university and went straight into work. They always encouraged me to go to university, and if I had not wanted to go they would have been disappointed and would have worried that I would miss out on such a valuable experience. My family supported me enormously throughout university, for which I am grateful. Following completion of my BA (Hons) Public Relations with Media degree at Marjon, I am now a trainee account executive with a PR company. The best bit about my job is the variety - each day is different and it is what my degree was prepping me for. My advice to anyone wanting to get into this line of work is to gain as much experience as possible!

ACCOUNTANCY TECHNICIAN

eil Demuth I work for Foot Anstey, which is a leading law firm in the SW. I am qualified at both AAT (Association of Accountancy Technicians) and CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) level and am the Finance Manager with responsibility for the development of a team of staff. I knew whilst taking my A Levels that I wanted a position in a professional environment where I could learn how a business operates and play my part in contributing to its success. I was attracted to working in an accounts environment as I enjoyed maths at school. After researching the AAT qualification it made me realise that being in accounts was not just about numbers but being central to how the business performs and operates. I completed my studies with Accountancy Plus as an Accountancy Technician and have since qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant.

CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT

Lisa Bench

I studied the AAT (Association of Accountancy Technicians) fast track route and am now qualified as a Chartered Accountant at the age of 23. When I was 13 I had a talent for maths so I decided to explore career opportunities available using maths. I did some research and quickly established that accountancy was an attractive option. One of the things that appealed to me was the clear career path, and the financial rewards looked pretty healthy too! I briefly considered doing a maths degree but did not want to study without getting paid. So I took a gap year to get some work experience and then applied to local accountancy firms to obtain a job with training. Thanks to choosing the AAT route I have been able to earn money rather than get in to debt at university and this has allowed me to buy my own house and have financial independence. I am now studying for my Chartered Tax Advisor exams.

Local Entrepreneurs

Plymouth needs you!

Oliver Blackwell

Oliver Blackwell Chartered Industrial Designer and entrepreneur As an Industrial Designer my aim is to improve the way that existing products work and look and/or produce them at a lower cost. I may also be involved in designing entirely new products. My job role focuses on improving the processes within manufacturing; it is not just about design. So having good business awareness is essential. I completed A levels at a school with an art & design specialism and went straight on to take a degree. I actually dropped out of my first degree course after six months because it was too engineering focussed and I wasn't enjoying it. I then had to wait a whole year before starting a BA (Hons) in 3 Dimensional Design with a product design specialism at the University of Plymouth. Ironically, since running my own business, I have become involved in a lot of engineering projects! I knew from day one that I wanted to work for myself. Six months after graduation and being employed in my first job I realised that I wanted 100% control over my working life. So I decided to take the risk and become self-employed. My long term business goals are to form partnerships with 5 different business sectors to develop diverse products. I am already working within the agricultural machinery, electrical, cookware, and luggage sectors, and intend to develop a green product in the next year.

Danny Bamping I would describe myself as a serial entrepreneur. I am the Managing Director and founder of Bedlam Puzzles Ltd, a skilled cameraman, director and producer and the creative mind behind a number of companies and initiatives, mostly in the Natural History & Environmental filmmaking sector. My primary business interest, however, is the Bedlam Cube dubbed the next Rubik's Cube of the toy world' which is a worldwide phenomenon with annual sales now estimated at over ÂŁ1 million. My rise to success began under difficult circumstances. Following heart surgery, I lost my job as a part time university lecturer, had to stop working as a freelance underwater cameraman and ended up on state benefits. However I soon became involved with other Projects, and met puzzle-genius Bruce Bedlam who had developed a very unique puzzle, but not pursued the product commercially.

COMPANY DIRECTOR

In 1998, my business partner and I established Deep Blue Sound, a commercial recording studio and educational facility in music technology. Initially, setting up our own business was an extremely stressful experience. We worked very long hours, roughly 80 a week, although we did occasionally give ourselves Sundays off! We knew that if we were to get anywhere we would need the magic mixture of hard work, a little bit of good fortune and of course we'd have to provide something that people actually want. In taking this route in life, you are doing everything with no certainty of any pay back. So you must have an undying belief that what you are doing will be successful. Thankfully, that has proved to be the case so far and I have been able to establish a business in the way I want to, creating the culture I want, with people I want. 13
