ANOTHER PACKED HOUSE AT THE PAVILIONS
Words from the Chairman - Carl HeslopAfter only a few days we are back at the pavilions in front of a packed crowd which seem not to be able to get enough of their basketball.
Following Wednesday night’s win against Sheffield, the team should be going into the game with a lot of confidence to try and pick up the two points. Sheffield were only one of two teams we weren’t able to beat last season so being able to get the upper hand this week was really positive, and we will need a similar defensive performance against surrey today.
Surrey haven’t had the best of starts this season but with changes in the roster and the return of Andrew Lawrence who can destroy teams, we must be really zoned in to get this one over the line.
It was pleasing to see Antonio get back into some rhythm and pick up another game MVP award following his extended period out earlier in the season. We crave a fully fit roster this season and hopefully we can have more luck in regard to injuries in 2023.
We also awarded our club captain Elvisi Dusha his player of the month award at the game which was really well deserved. At times of injuries, you need other players to step up and cover
the gaps which Elvisi has done consistently this season. All elements of his game have improved this season which is testament to his work on and off the court. Consistently is key and look forward to seeing him continue working with Antonio to pick more wins throughout the season.
With only 2 home games left in 2022 I can’t believe how quickly the time is going and with both games sold out, I’m really appreciative of the support given to the team this season. From a position last year where we hadn’t won a game to be a 500 club this season really is testament to all the hard work the team has put in on and off the court.
We are going into 2023 a lot stronger than we did in 2022 and so much has been achieved with the creation of our Pathway, new academy and more opportunities for both girls and boys to get involved with the game.
Basketball In Plymouth and the Patriots are growing and its down to the huge support from our fanbase, sponsors and stakeholders that we really appreciate. So, let’s go out with a bang in 2022 and roar our team to another win.

Good afternoon and welcome to the Pavilions for today’s BBL championship game against the Surrey Scorchers. The Scorchers are coached by Lloyd Gardner, and despite their current record in the league, they are a very dangerous opponent. On Wednesday we got a very good win against a very tough Sheffield team.
It was important to get this win as when we previously played them, I feel that we let this game get away from us as we just did not perform to the level I would have liked and ultimately fell short.
This time it was important that we tried to dictate the pace in the game which is easier said than done against the Sharks! They are a very patient team and move the ball well and until they get the shot they want.
I was pleased to see that defensively we stuck to our task and there were some big plays in key moments of the game that turned the game in our favour.
Big plays from Antonio and Elvisi, but down the stretch both James and Bell had massive plays either at the offensive end or a big block at the defensive end when the game was on the line. All in all, a very good team performance with solid contributions from everyone.
We cannot afford to take Surrey lightly this evening. We must come into this game with great focus and put in a workmanlike shift to get this win, which would put us above .500
As we have already seen this season, there are no gimmie games and every game you must be ready to perform at your best, today’s game is no different!
I extend a warm welcome to the Surrey coaching staff and players for this BBL championship match.

MATCH REPORT
SHEFFIELD SHARKS 68 - 63
The Plymouth City Patriots were in action late Wednesday night, and toppled fourth place Sheffield Sharks in a defensive battle in front of a packed Pavilions.
Over a thousand loyal Patriot fans packed into Pavilions on a cold Wednesday night, and despite the low score, were given an exciting win over the best defensive team in the British Basketball League (BBL). Whilst the frost began to lay outside the arena, inside the frantic pace and impressive defense from both sides, left no area of the court free for long enough to freeze. In fact, both teams were so effective in stopping one another, that by half time the score was a mere 31-28 in favour of the home side.
The pace would pick up in the second half, with the Patriots storming out of the gates and opening up a 13 point lead, the largest of the night. Behind a great scoring night for the games MVP, Antonio Williams, who finished with 20 points. The Sharks would claw their way back, however and reduce the deficit to single digits, before themselves storming out of the fourth quarter and closing the gap to just one point, with just over two minutes remaining in the game, setting up a classic finale. The game was won during these last two minutes, due to an unlikely hero. Markedric Bell made all the key plays down the stretch, hitting a massive three pointer to stretch a lead, followed by a defensive block, a big rebound and hitting two foul shots with seconds remaining to put the game out of the visitors reach, final score 68-63.
Coach Paul James summed the game up, saying “I think in the first quarter we really played into their hands… Coming out in the second half, we flew around the ball defensively, we tried to run the ball more offensively. Bell had a block at the end, which was huge for us and great to come away with the win.” He had some final words for the Patriots fans as well, adding “They’ve helped us all season long! They were fantastic again tonight, got behind the team and really spurred us on.”
Match reports by Pablo CheeksGRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO
How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do.
Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
