I WOULD BE LION IF I DIDN’T SAY LAST SUNDAY WAS AMAZING

Sport never ceases to surprise people and upsets don’t come much bigger than the one the patriots managed to achieve last week. London have been so dominant this season, many try to guess what the winning margin will be rather than whether they will win the game or not so to win by such a convincing margin was really special. The atmosphere in the pavilions was electric and that was a performance that the fans and the club needed with everyone putting in a shift. We all know it wasn’t a full-strength London team, but one leagues ahead of us in regard to budget and we showed a tremendous amount of composure to compete over the four quarters. The new recruits have made a big difference, and we can play people now in their more natural positions with a more dominant centre in the form of Spencer Levi who has made a big impact. Against London I thought the effort level was superb and we need to maintain that now throughout the season to try and climb the table. More pleasing was it was a complete roster performance with the whole bench contributing which makes a huge difference against other sides with bigger budgets.
For all this to come together as well on PJ’s historic 500th winning game was absolutely amazing and nothing less than his career deserves. I have had the absolute pleasure to work alongside him for the past few seasons and he is a great ambassador for the game, the sport and we are very lucky as a club to have him. The saying goes “form is temporary, but class is permanent” and PJ has shown over such a long period that he can compete against the very best time and time again. I personally don’t think he gets the credit he deserves working with the budget and constraints that Plymouth have as a franchise, and I look forward to many more wins this season to add to his tally. In other landmarks the club yesterday had its first U12s girl’s game at Marjon University which was an amazing achievement for the club. To have a girl’s team at such a young age group shows the growth of the pathway and would say a big thankyou to Pete Wilson and Paula Powell for all their hard work in achieving this landmark. With a strong start to the ladies WNBL season, female basketball in the city is looking really strong. Welcome back to another packed pavilions let’s see if lightning can strike twice with another upset!

A WORD FROM
COACH PJ
Good afternoon, welcome to the Pavilions for this British Basketball League game. Today we host the Newcastle Eagles for our first meeting of the season. Last weekend I saw signs of the team starting to grow and get to a level of performance that we have all been searching for. Against Caledonia I thought we played very well apart from the final 90 seconds or so where we had a couple of defensive breakdowns which allowed the Gladiators to get their noses in front and we were not able to respond in a positive way. It was a disappointing loss, but I saw plenty of positive to take from the game that we could look to build upon in the upcoming games. London Lions two days later saw the team put together our best and most complete performance of the season to date. It doesn’t get much tougher than this, top versus bottom, A real David vs Goliath. I was so pleased with the way we came together and stuck to the game plan for the whole game.
Even though we have played well in several games, up to this point we had failed to do so for 40 minutes. We played as one unit and showed great team spirit and togetherness. It was a fantastic win and the fact that we inflicted the Lions first loss of their BBL season, the fact that we were at home and the fact that it was my 500th BBL champions win, just made even more a very special occasion. I’m so very proud of this achievement and thank my family, all the players that I have coached over the years, owners, staff, and supporters, all of whom have played some part in me getting to this fantastic millstone. It’s an incredible achievement of longevity and success. I extend a warm welcome to Newcastle Eagles coaching staff, players, and supporters for this British Basketball League championship game as we look to try and win back-to-back games for the first time this season!
ENJOY THE GAME.

MATCH REPORT The two richest basketball teams in the country headed to town this weekend, and both were made to work by the new look Plymouth City Patriots, who showed more than enough grit and determination for a team that has had to introduce two new signings in as many weeks. The Gladiators would scrape the win in the first game 72-82, but the Sunday fixture would prove to be one for the ages. The Lions rolled into town Sunday afternoon in relative luxury. The luxury that comes from having billionaire owners, with a roster that boasted a number of high profile British and overseas players. The fact remains that the Lions did perhaps underestimate the Patriots, only bringing with them a handful of the superstars that currently reside on their roster. Even so, the London team were still heavy favourites and were looking to come to the South West, take an early lead and be back on the coach to the nation’s capital before anyone in Plymouth noticed. However, it did not unfold in that manner. From the opening tip off the Patriots and their ever loyal fan base, had a level of intensity that they have only previously displayed in fits and starts so far this season. The home team Patriots didn’t play like a team that had only managed one win from their previous eleven games. Defensively, they played with a ferociousness that made it increasingly difficult for the Lions to gain any kind of momentum. Time and again they forced turnovers, interrupted the passing lane and pressured their opposing numbers like possessed men. Offensively they played for the first time this season with real belief. They worked each possession looking for the best available shot, and took those shots with a renewed confidence that has been lacking in previous games this season. By the end of the first quarter the Patriots were up by double figures, and by half time the lead was 21. The game was far from over. The talent on the Lions roster combined with the high profile coaching staff would mean that the Patriots could expect the Lions to make adjustments and come flying out of the blocks from the first whistle of the second half. They did just that, hitting their first two three pointers and upping their defensive intensity. The Patriots however, still hyped from their opening twenty minutes of excellence, matched the Lions almost basket for basket. Even so, the visitors managed to reduce the Patriots lead by 14 points. The Lions would certainly not go quietly into the night. Or would they? The final push that the Patriots expected never really came, as the home team put on a masterclass at both ends of the court. Taylor Johnson led the way with 24 points, but it was an all round team performance. Jacob Wiley and TJ Atwood were also big contributors on the night, but also the experienced heads of Elvisi Dusha and Joe Hart had exceptional contributions from the bench, offering the type of thing that doesn’t show up on the stats sheet. That said Hart scored 13 points and had 83% shooting percentage. Spencer Levi also gave the home team a spark in the rebounds
Match report by Pablo Cheeks
department, grabbing 13 boards. At the final buzzer the Patriots had not only won the game, but they had annihilated their opponents 94-70. To cap off a historic victory, Head Coach Paul James’ winning record as a coach in the BBL before the game, stood at 499. With the long string of defeats and this weekend’s tough fixtures, reaching the 500 mark looked impossible. And yet, as the final moments of the game unfolded, it was clear that the BBLs winningest coach would hit the half century as the final buzzer sounded, making the night even more special. As a reward, he was surrounded by the jubilant Patriots players, who promptly emptied the contents of the water and ice bucket over him. “I said before the game, this would be an amazing game to get my 500th win…” started Coach James in his post game interview, he continued, “we’re not a bad team and they massively underestimated us.” James was impressed with his team’s performance on the night, saying “defensively we played in the gaps and disrupted their offence very well. I thought we did great tonight taking them out of their rhythm. When we subbed out our starters for Elvisi [Dusha], Joe [Hart] and Jules [Dang-Akodo], our level didn’t drop. If anything it went up and we built a bigger lead. They made a positive difference.” Team captain Elvisi Dusha was understandably upbeat after the game, saying “it’s great to get that chip off our shoulder after struggling to get a win, and what a game to do it in. Being able to come out on top is a big turning point for us and to do it on PJ’s 500th win just tops off a great night.” Joe Hart, who missed all of last season due to a knee injury was also thrilled at the win. “I think that’s the best basketball we’ve played as a group collectively this season. It’s going to do us a world of good, to play the way we did. A game like today only proves we are moving in the right direction as a team and we’re gelling together nicely.” The Patriots still sit at the foot of the BBL table, but on equal points with both the Surrey Scorchers and Manchester Giants. However, after Sunday nights win the Plymouth side will have a new found confidence and lease of life, as the loom set to embark on the last two thirds of the season, starting next Sunday afternoon, when the Newcastle Eagles come to town.
MATCH REPORT Cardiff Met Archers 59-66 Plymouth Marjon Patriots Saturday 4th November 2023 WNBL Division 2 Women The Plymouth Marjon Patriots Women moved to 3-0 in the Women’s National Basketball League after a close victory against Cardiff Met Archers. Travelling to Wales with a shorthanded squad due to injuries, the Patriots faced early adversity and trailed by as many as 9 points in the 1st quarter. A late resurgence not only got the visitors level, but 13 points personal from Sophie Carr meant they went ahead 15-24 at the quarter’s end. With Archers sat in a 2-3 zone for the entirety of the first half, captain Annette Cook and Alicia Parsons showed great on-court chemistry and produced numerous spectacular plays, handing the Patriots a 13 point lead at the halftime break. Carr and Cook continued to show their experience and forced the hosts into switching their defensive tactics in the 3rd quarter. This played perfectly into the Patriots’ hands and a 3-pointer from Beth Peace ended the period with the Patriots in front 39-55. A strong 4th quarter showing from Cardiff got them back into the game but key free throws from Jodie Abbott sealed the Patriots’ 3rd consecutive league win. 25 points from Sophie Carr meant she finished the game as top scorer, with Cook adding 20 and Abbott adding 9. Head Coach Will Hopper said: “I’m super proud of how we played today. It was our first real taste of adversity going into the game with a smaller squad, but we showed great character to tough out the win. We’re off to a great start but we aren’t getting ahead of ourselves, there are no easy games in this division.”
