A GREAT WINNING START TO OCTOBER
Words from the Chairman
- Carl Heslop
Following a very tight game on Friday which could have gone either way we managed to get our first win of the campaign against Sheffield Sharks
It was nothing more than the team deserved having led by 22 points at one stage and in control for most of the game. But as everyone knows the patriots never take the easy route and although it was expected that Sheffield would come back at us, I’m sure many fans would have liked there to be more daylight between the two teams in the closing stages.
However, it was pleasing to see players performing under pressure, high percentage free throw success in the closing stages and having the mental strength to get one over the line. Physiologically this will be a big boost to the team giving them confidence in their ability to make teams in key moments.
It was also great to see the roster working hard as a team, sharing points, and looking in sync. Mason makes a big difference and his MVP performance against Sheffield underlined his important to the patriots. TJ’s work ethic along with Taylor’s tenacity is really going to test teams and it’s great to have players of this calibre at the club. I also wanted to give a special mention to Joe Hart who made his debut on Friday and played good minutes in both games at the
weekend. Having had such a long time out, I thought he came back and had a really positive impact in both games and it’s great to see him performing again in a patriot’s jersey.
The atmosphere at the weekend in both games was absolutely incredible and the feedback from the new players is that they absolutely love playing at the pavilions. Having been to all the venues in the league I believe we have a game-day to rival any of the competition. From amazing Cheerleaders, amazing volunteers, to breakdancing children and a flying mascot, there isn’t any club in the league that entertains like we do. We have something really special in Plymouth and would thank all the fans for their support.
We are playing Bristol again in a very short time and they showed us at home what a good side they are and will be looking for a repeat performance. The league doesn’t lie but the calibre of Bristol’s opponents this season already I think masks a much better team which doesn’t reflect their current league placing. It is going to be a very hard game like our previous league outing, but we didn’t have Mason for that game and hope he can be the difference in a tense encounter.

COACH PJ A WORD FROM
Good evening, welcome to the Pavilions for this British Basketball League game. Today we host the Bristol Flyers, our second meeting of the season having played them away in our opening game. Bristol got the better of us in that time, so we are hoping for a different outcome here at home today.
Last week you got to see our team at home for the first time and as in the previous games we showed periods of playing really good basketball at times. Against Manchester Giants we played with great pace early on and created many good scoring opportunities throughout. Our downfall in this game was that we didn’t capitalise on these scoring opportunities and put Manchester away when we had the chance. Instead, we allowed Manchester to hang around who then grew in confidence as the game went on and, in the end, we let another game slip through our fingers. We created 14 more shots than Manchester and lost the game by 4, so it wasn’t a good shooting night for us.
I was delighted with the way we bounced back against Sheffield on Sunday. Sheffield was on a three-game winning streak and had been playing well. Again, we started the game with great energy, moving the ball quickly and flying around on defence, limiting Sheffield to 29 points in the first half whilst scoring 46 points ourselves.
It was always going to be difficult to sustain that level of performance for another half of basketball and especially this early in the season. Sheffield is too good a team not to have come back at us and have their run in the game.
I was pleased with the way we managed the game for 35 minutes, then the last 5 I thought we looked a little leggy and nervous with the ball as we chased our first win of the season. Thankfully we made some big plays down the stretch and more importantly, made our free throws to close the game out. It was fantastic to get our first win in front of our home supporters!
Unfortunately, in this game Mekhii took a knock to the head where it was later confirmed that he sustained a concussion. We are now observing basketball concussion protocol and hope that all goes well for him to return in the not-too-distant future. We of course wish Mekhii a speedy recovery.
I extend a warm welcome to the Bristol Flyers coaching staff, players, and supporters for these British Basketball League championship game.
ENJOY THE GAME.

MATCH REPORT
The Plymouth City Patriots picked up their first win of the season Sunday afternoon over the impressive Sheffield Sharks, but not before suffering a defeat to the Manchester Giants.
Friday night saw the Patriots take to their home court for the first time this season, with an expectant crowd also looking for their first win. The visitors, Manchester Giants, were also hungry for their first win of the season, and would ultimately take the spoils. It was a close affair, with the exception of the early running, with the Patriots looking the better of the two teams after the opening tip off. Despite the home side holding a double digit lead, the Giants applied their usual brand of tough, hard nosed basketball and bullied themselves into the lead. A lead they would never relinquish. Despite three straight threes from Patriots starting point guard Mason Faulkner late in the game, the Giants held on for a 73-77 win. The highlight of the game for the Patriots was the return of Joe Hart, after an injury that has kept him sidelined for over a year. He capped off his return by nailing his first three point attempt, and the roof of Pavilions was lifted by the admiring boisterous Patriots fans.
Sunday’s game of the double header was perhaps the harder of the two fixtures. The Sheffield Sharks have made a number of late additions to their team, and have picked up a pair of wins prior to arriving in Plymouth. The game itself had a close, nervy first quarter, with neither side able to put their stamp on the game, that was until the second quarter began. The Patriots hit the Sharks with a barrage of threes, starting with DeAndre Johnson, who would go on to have his best performance of the season so far, finishimg the game with 20 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Despite the Sharks clawing away at the insurmountable lead built by the home team, the Patriots would hold on for the win and their first victory of the season. Final score, 92-87.
“It’s been coming…” started head coach Paul James, referring to his team’s first win. He continued, “... We’ve gradually improved. We gave away our last two games, but we got it together today.” He summed up the game by saying “we built up a strong lead, though we always knew Sheffield would come back, but we weathered the storm. For us to be a good team we need everyone to contribute. We didn’t have that Friday against Manchester, today we did and it was a real team performance.” Indeed the Patriots had four of the starting five in double figures, TJ Atwood, DeAndre Johnson, Taylor Johnson, Jacob Wiley and Mason Faulkner. Faulkner was particularly impressive across both games, and post game he had a message for the home fans, saying “This gym is electric man! I love all the Patriots fans, the energy they bring, the environment. It can’t get any better than playing in Plymouth on gameday, it’s really beautiful and I’m blessed to be her for sure.”
The win Sunday night had lifted the Patriots from the bottom of the league table and they have a week to prepare themselves before taking on the Bristol Flyers at Pavilions in the much anticipated South West Derby.
