FOCUS REQUIRED IN FINAL STRETCH
Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
The games come thick and fast now as we enter the final push to the end of the season, and we welcome you all back after a hard-fought game Caledonia and a tough night on the road against Leicester.
At home I thought we did really well against a strong Caledonia side and with a bit more composure and decisiveness at key times I feel we could have got the job done. Rashad put in another good performance and along RB, Jules and Otas we managed to share the points again to give ourselves a fighting chance.
Against Leicester we never got going and they took full advantage to put us to the sword. The 8-hour coach drive which resulted in us arriving just before tip-off and delaying the game didn’t help but we should having played Leicester so many times over the last few weeks be able to adapt and cope with their physical style of play.
With Newcastle winning on Friday against Caledonia it is proving to go down to the very wire and we need to not rely on other results to go our way to secure the playoffs. It is in our hands if we can get a result today which would put Newcastle under a lot of pressure to win all
their games if they were able to beat London. Injuries are not helping us currently with the absence of Tookie and Ty and we really need others to step up and make the difference and earn that 8th place.
Next week we welcome our sponsors and business club members to another event at China Fleet country club as part of our partnership. Seeing this network grow is really great and the wide range of companies looking to get involved with the patriots next season is really exciting.
We’ve also had our U16s return from an international tournament in France and saw all our age groups play yesterday in a full development day at Marjon University against Bridport. Seeing the club as active in youth development as it is in developing the whole franchise is really positive and something which is a great foundation to build on.
So, let’s enjoy our last few games at the pavilions and make some noise to get the job over the line as the support this season has been amazing.

UNIT 6, ST STEPHENS PLACE, RIDGEWAY, PLYMOUTH PL7 2ZNCOACH PJ A WORD FROM
Welcome to today’s game against Cheshire Phoenix. This is Cheshire’s second and final visit to the pavilions this 2022/23 season.
If we could manage to win this game it would guarantee us a place in the end of season playoffs, which is something every team wants to be involved in, no one wants to be going home early!
For us to achieve this would be a big achievement after the roller coaster of a season we have had. But we still have a lot of work to do if we are to achieve this goal.
I was disappointed with our performance at Leicester on Friday. Yes, we were missing a couple of players and the journey up to Leicester was the worst trip of the season, so the team coach was late arriving at the venue, meaning a shortened warm up for the team.
However, we cannot use this as an excuse for the way we played and our poor execution of the basic
fundamentals of the game. There is plenty to play for still, non-less than the players showing some pride in their work and make a massive effort in the remaining few games.
Right now, it feels like nothing has gone our way in recent weeks, but only we can put this right, and we must keep working hard as a group and even more importantly for each other and the win we need will come!
Cheshire will be another tough game today, but I’m hoping for a real positive reaction from the team this afternoon and that everything comes together!
Welcome to the coaching staff, players, and support teams from Cheshire for these BBL championship game.
ENJOY THE GAME.

MATCH REPORT
It was a tough schedule that faced the Plymouth City Patriots over the weekend with back to back games in difficult circumstances that had drama in both matchups up until the final buzzer.
The Patriots, who are currently holding on desperately to the all important eighth spot, which would see them progress into the playoffs, had a must win game Saturday night against the Scorchers in Surrey, before returning home overnight, to face the high flying Caledonia Gladiators the very next day.
With the Newcastle Eagles breathing down their necks from ninth in the league table, the Patriots could not afford to go without a win this weekend. The more likely game for victory seemed to be against bottom of the league Surrey, who have had a tumultuous season so far. The game started with both teams showing signs of nerves with the Scorchers getting the better of the away side leading up to half time, taking a 13 point lead. However, Ralph Bissainthe and Rashad Hassan combined with a run of scores that closed the gap to just 3 points going into the interval.
The Patriots upped their game in the third quarter and took a narrow lead going into the fourth, but the Scorchers fought back. With less than two minutes to play, the game was hanging in the balance although the Patriots managed to edge ahead with the slenderest of margins and with just thirteen seconds on the clock, in desperate need of a score, club captain Elvisi Dusha nailed a jump shot that put the game beyond Surrey. James Hawthorne Jr added an exclamation dunk to seal the deal and despite a last second three pointer from the opposition’s Andrew Lawrence, the Patriots took the away win, 87-89.
The Patriots had little time to reflect and headed home that night, to face the recently crowned BBL Trophy Champions, the Caledonia Gladiators, Sunday afternoon at Pavilions. The Patriots were heavy underdogs but took to the floor with a renewed confidence after the previous night. Both teams were missing players due to injury and both had come into the game having won in dramatic fashion. A tough physical game unfolded, with neither side able to take full control of the tie. Despite being underdogs, the plucky Pats managed to lead for the majority of the game and forced the Gladiators to play catch-up. Caledonia always managed to stay in check however, and their championship metal shone through in the latter stages of the game, as they took a narrow 5 point lead with five minutes remaining and never relinquished it. The Patriots battled back, but couldn’t close the gap, losing to the Trophy Champs 80-85.
Match report by Pablo Cheeks“We won every quarter except the last one, so a tough outcome on that one…” started Otas Iyekekpolor after Sunday’s game. He continued”... We had back to back games, but everybody came out and played hard. We shared the ball really well yesterday and today and we did a great job rebounding the ball, but we’re getting better and we’re improving all the time and hopefully we can finish the season strong and make a run for the playoffs.”
Head Coach Paul James was also upbeat after a positive weekend saying, “Saturday was a must win game you know. We needed the win to give us some breathing space between us and Newcastle. If we can play more like we have these last two days, I have every confidence we’ll make the playoffs.”
The last words from the weekend belonged to club captain Elvisi Dusha, who is constantly answering his critics with his unselfish style of play, amassing 18 assists over the two games. “The Surrey game was important for us, we knew winning would be pivotal to making the playoffs, now we just need to focus on getting in a good rhythm in these last few games before the playoffs.” He added “Everyone played well, everybody wanted to win!”
The Patriots have three league games left before a potential showdown against the London Lions in the first round of the BBL playoffs. They will be at Pavilions on the 23rd of April taking on the the Newcastle Eagles in the final game of the regular season.
GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO
How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do.
Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition.
Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
