LET’S BUILD ON OUR LAST HOME PERFORMANCE

We couldn’t have had a better start to our league campaign at home with a storming 23-point win over surrey scorchers. What was more pleasing for me is that it was a full team performance with a spread of scorers and without Antonio, many players stepping up to provide the leadership in his absence.

Opportunities for kids from 7-18 years of age are now available every single half term and are always well attended which brings so much joy to the club and every participant. Girl’s camps are now firmly part of our programme, and it was great to see both these camps well attended as we look to grow the girl’s pathway even more.

Troy had an outstanding game, and you won’t see a better ending to an encounter with not one, but two amazing long-range shots topped off with Elvisi’s amazing buzzer beating closer. With such good support it was nice to send everyone home happy.

Sadly, we couldn’t replicate this on the road with a disappointing performance in Newcastle in a game decided by fouls and technical penalties. Deuce’s performance was a bright spark who showed his experience and skill around the hoop to come away with 26 points. However, managing our controllable’s needs to be a focus for the rest of the season and although scoring 56 points in the second half is a positive, we need to improve our discipline to compete in this league.

Off the court we have had a really busy week completing all of our Half term camps which are now a firm fixture across the academic year.

We also welcome today our new business club sponsors Channicool training services, Made with Maturity, Ourheat, GJM Electrical, Ocean Electrical and Yield Bakery which join our evergrowing business network off the court. It’s great to see the professional network getting behind the sport and the club and we look to grow this greatly over the season as part of promoting basketball throughout the southwest.

We welcome a new look team today in the form of Caledonia Gladiators which have been born out of new investment and a bright future for the Glasgow community. They have started the season well and already taken the scalp of Leicester Riders which shows their level of intent and ability.

Today will be a real test and I’m sure you will all give it your best to drive the patriots on today. Make the sixth man count and let’s roar ourselves to another victory!

COACH PJ A WORD FROM

Good afternoon and welcome to the Pavilions as we host the Caledonia Gladiators in the BBL championship. The Gladiators are coached by Gareth Murray and he has put together a talented team.

The second half was a little more committed, but the damage had been done and we ended up just chasing the game. We scored the ball well, but defensively we were lacking and this needs to be much better this afternoon.

Last week I thought the team showed some good signs of coming together as a unit. We were focused and went about our work well, with purpose, and determination. But we have a lot of work to do if we are to get in a position where we are competing night in night out home and away.

For us to be a good team we must keep our emotions in check and learn quickly that there are some things that we just cannot control in a game, so we need to control the things that we can.

Friday against Newcastle we just didn’t show up in the first half and then we allowed our emotions to get the better of us, which made a bad situation worse.

I know we must be so much better and play harder and that is the challenge for the season.

Antonio has been a miss, but I hope he will return to the court very soon as we need everyone on the roster healthy for us to be where I want us to be.

I extend a warm welcome to the Caledonia coaching staff and players for this BBL championship match.

MATCH REPORT

The Plymouth City Patriots tipped off their first British Basketball League (BBL) home match up against the Surrey Scorchers in style Sunday afternoon. The home side had already notched up a win in the competition away from home, defeating the Cheshire Phoenix, but over the last two weeks had fallen short to the likes of Newcastle in the BBL Cup and arch rivals Bristol Flyers. On Sunday, however, the Patriots showed what they are capable of and executed a flawless game plan from start to finish.

From the opening tip off the game was played at a blistering pace. Both teams forced the tempo and exchanged baskets, and by the end of the first quarter the game was tied 22-22. From this point on the Patriots slipped seamlessly into a higher gear and by half time had amassed a ten point lead and would look to close the game out early. If the second quarter was impressive, the third would be a masterpiece in comparison, as the Patriots not only kept their opposition to just 10 points in the quarter, but extended their lead to 22 heading into the final quarter and never looked back. Final score, 91-68.

Troy Simons had a game high 24 points and added five rebounds, six assists and three steals. He was rightly named the games MVP and played a large part in his teams success at both ends of the court. Captain Elvisi Dusha also impressed on the night, with 15 points and nine assists. Dusha was noticeably upbeat in his post game interview, saying “It’s nice to win the first league home game of the season, with a comfortable lead, it’s good for the guys and it’s good to know we’re capable of it. It’s a real boost and great momentum going into the next game.” Dusha was also complimentary of the sold out Pavilions crowd, he added, “The crowd, I mean I don’t know what to tell you about it, they are the backbone of the club. Without the crowd we wouldn’t have runs during the game, we wouldn’t have the consistency, so from me and on behalf of the whole team, it’s a big thanks to the fans.”

Dusha has been in the BBL for ten years and relishes his role with the Patriots, “It’s great to be a leader on such a young team, at the same time I’m still learning game by game.” Isa Brandon, who has impressed since being a late addition to the squad was also influential in the win pouring in 16 points and adding 7 assists as well as two steals and a block. “It feels great to be back in Plymouth, the energy with the crowd and the team is always good,” said Brandon, post game, “It’s good to get more minutes and I’m just giving my all in those minutes and trying to help the team as best I can.” Brandon added, “We just hope we can keep doing this for the rest of the season, and keep getting better and better as a unit, hopefully we can continue to rally together and make

SURREY SCORCHERS 91-68

the playoffs.” One common theme throughout the players post game interviews was the impact of the fans. “The fans make a huge difference. I’ve always said that we have the best fans, best home crowd and the best atmosphere in the BBL by far,” said Rashad Hassan, always impressed by the Plymouth faithful. “They gave us great energy today and there are times when the support from the fans gives us that extra energy to hussle and they helped us get a big win.”

Owner Carl Heslop was also jubilant after the Patriots first league home win of the season, saying “We’ve had a fantastic win. All Round great performance at both ends of the court, shot the three ball the best we have all season and it was just a really good team performance.” Heslop was also appreciative of the Pavilions crowd, adding, “We’ve got phenomenal fans that keep coming and supporting. A real positive is the amount of families in the packed out arena, which is great for the community we’re growing here.”

Despite a blowout victory, the home side kept the crowd entertained until the final buzzer, with an Elvisi Dusha three pointer that he launched from inside his own half, splashing through the net as time expired. The shot brought the crowd to an absolute frenzie as the buzzer sounded and no doubt sent fans home happy and excited for next week. In fact, the Patriots have little time to celebrate their win. With plenty of games remaining on the basketball calendar, they’re back in action next weekend in a tough double header, starting Friday, with the long trip to the Newcastle Eagles and culminating on Sunday, with a home fixture against the visiting Caledonia Gladiators (formerly the Glasgow Rocks). Both games will be available on YouTube and tickets for the home game are already on sale via the Pavilions website for Sunday, 3pm tip off.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO

How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do.

Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition.

Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.

This is me! I can be found in the middle of the 2nd row on game days. Come and say hello. Or contact me on email if i’m not here.
