WHAT A WEEKEND INTO PLAYOFF CONTENTION Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
Two great games and 4 points doesn’t give the Patriots performances justice last weekend against Bristol and Manchester. A gutsy performance which kept Bristol at bay with some serious pressure buckets set up a perfect weekend which culminated in the buzzer beater win against Manchester. To put on that level of performance in front of the fans was magical and so pleased that the Patriots fans got to experience it. The team spirit within the group is great and this roster never know when they are beat. A quality we have tried to instil in the patriot’s culture and one we look to grow as we progress through the season. We created history by selling out the Pavilions for the first time ever with a full paying audience. This demonstrates the growth of this club which continues to break records both on and off the court and continues to put smiles on people’s faces. Professional basketball in Plymouth is back with a bang and we have a very exciting remainder of the season planned. Today we hope will be a great start into Half term where we have a number of basketball
camps running throughout the week. Coach PJ will be giving a masterclass on Monday for his first technical camp which will run on Monday followed by our U12 and U14 for the next few days. The response to these camps continues to be great and we are so proud to be putting these back on following issues with Covid. We are also pleased to announce that we continue to grow our Junior League programme with a new session at Honicknowle Hornets. We have wanted a session in this area for some time and we are grateful to YMCA for supporting us in delivering this. Our vision to have a truly great junior league in the city is taking shape and we have big plans for this development over the coming months. We have given ourselves a great chance in the play offs which many thought was inconceivable at the beginning of the season and we will continue to improve the club both on and off the court to bring success to Plymouth. I would thank you for your continued support and let’s pack the pavilions between now and the end of the season because performances show you don’t want to miss any of these players and the games this season!

A WORD FROM
COACH PJ SPONSORED BY
Last week was massive for the Patriots. Two games, two wins, against Bristol and Manchester who are both riding high in the BBL championship, we played with great tenacity and courage to get these four points. It was the perfect weekend for the team and just what we needed as we continue to chase a spot In the end of season playoffs. Tonight, we play Bristol again which we already know is going to be a very intensely fought game. We will be ready to do battle with the Flyers once more and show the grit and determination that we showed last weekend. We had unbelievable trust and belief in each other, and the mental toughness was awesome to see. When you think that we were down in the fourth quarter of both the Bristol and Manchester games
having led for the most part, it would have been so easy for us to collapse and give it up. But this team has shown even in the early stages of the season that we would play hard to the final whistle and that mentality glowed through last weekend. We must now move on and capitalise on the weekend before. Two more very tough games this weekend in Bristol tonight and Cheshire on Sunday. Winnable games, but we need and must show the same good qualities that we showed in our previous games. A warm welcome to Bristol’s coaching staff, the players, and staff for this BBL championship game.

MATCH REPORT An incredible weekend of basketball was on hand to all that witnessed the Plymouth City Patriots notch up two wins, from the most unlikely positions. Finding themselves down by considerable margins in the final quarter of their away game Friday night against the Bristol Flyers and home game Sunday afternoon against Manchester Giants, the Patriots showed grit and determination to overcome their opponents and come away with two massive victories. The Patriots’ successful weekend began late on Friday night, when they travelled to South West rivals, the Bristol Flyers. There was an air of expectation among Patriots players and fans and just a hint of bad blood after the Patriots defeated the Flyers back in December, a game that the Flyers would have officially ruled as an exhibition match due to squad limitations attributed at the time to Covid. The game did not disappoint. Both teams matched each other from the very first tip off, right up until the business end of the fourth quarter, when the Flyers would simply find another gear. Marcus Evans and Trejon Jacob led the Flyers onslaught, as the home team took a massive eight point lead and had all the momentum, with a little over three minutes remaining. In a game where both teams matched each other blow for blow, an eight point lead at this stage seemed to be curtains for the Patriots, who desperately need to pick up as many wins as possible, if they are to reach the British Basketball League (BBL) Playoffs. Up stepped Kofi Josephs and the hot hand of the moment and BBL player of the week, Joe Hart, who both hit back to back three pointers to close the gap to just two points now with just over a minute and half remaining. Both teams would fail to score on their next attacks, building the tension for a dramatic finish. In desperate need of a basket and with time winding down, Rowell Graham-Bell would deliver for the Patriots right on cue, knocking down a huge three pointer with forty three seconds left on the clock. Now with a one point lead, Joe Hart would add to the Flyers misery with a quick steal and layup, giving the Patriots a three point lead and thirty one seconds remaining in the game. The game was not over yet, as Marcus Evans would hit a two point jump shot for the Flyers to make it a one point ball game with sixteen seconds to go. The Patriots would keep possession heading into the last ten seconds and a foul on Antonio Williams would send him to the line to shoot two free throws and potentially win the game with four seconds left on the game clock. Unbelievably, he missed both free throws, but perhaps more unbelievably Rowell Graham-Bell grabbed the offensive rebound, fed the ball to Joe Hart, who knocked down a three pointer on the buzzer. An incredible finish for the Patriots who took the game 77-73 in dramatic fashion. Head Coach, Paul James was confident throughout the game and had this to say in his post game interview, “We played the better basketball for most of the game and even when Bristol made their little run in the fourth quarter, we didn’t panic , but executed fantastically well to get this hard fought win.”
All attention then turned to Sunday afternoon and a sold-out Plymouth Pavilions, who would be on hand to witness a game that had almost everything. The Manchester Giants would make the long journey south having experienced mixed fortunes over the last few weeks, losing in the BBL Cup Final to the Leicester Riders and struggling for form in the League Championship, losing three of their last four games. This would be the third and final time the two teams would meet in the regular season, with the head to head tied at one game a piece. Their previous meetings had been close affairs with single digit wins for both teams, including one in overtime. Despite their current form the Giants would be favourites with their star studded roster, including Team GB stars Dan Clarke and Jamel Anderson, not to mention head guard Tyrik Armstrong, an exciting American who has lit the league alight since signing over the summer. The game started where the team’s previous meetings left off, with neither side able to take command or capitalise on some first class defending. It would be a low scoring affair and definitely comparable to a chess game, with both coaches constantly trying to adjust and out-smart their opposite number. The Patriots would take a slender four point lead into the half time break after a gruelling first two quarters and heading into the second half, they could take comfort in having been able to restrict Dan Clarke to a minimal contribution. An achievement that would be short lived. The third quarter started with Clarke running the Giants offence, distributing well and starting to score himself. The Giants would control the third quarter and come out in the fourth and final quarter, all guns blazing. They opened up a twelve point lead with just under eight and a half minutes remaining and looked to sew things up with their high-octane offence, crisp passing and well-drilled defence. But the Patriots would not go quietly into the night. Kofi Josephs and Rowell Graham-Bell hit two three pointers in quick succession,
closing the lead to just six points. The two teams would now trade baskets, like two heavyweight boxers trading blows towards the end of a twelve round prize fight and when Dan Clarke hit a long two with four minutes to go, to give the visitors a eight point lead, it felt a little like the evening could be over for the Patriots. Once again, and like he has so many times in recent months, Joe Hart hit a massive three pointer on a fast break, to get the crowd on its feet. On the next play Graham-Bell forced a steal and Kofi Josephs drew an “unsportsman-like” foul as he headed in for the layup. This led to Josephs hitting both foul shots, and getting the ball back for another Patriots opportunity. Again the two teams would trade baskets, setting up the most exciting finish in Pavilions for many years. With twenty five seconds to go and trailing by just one point, Graham-Bell would score a layup after an Antonio Williams steal, to give the home team a one point lead. The crowd was at a frenzie. The Giants would get one last shot at upsetting the party and even though the Patriots, in particular Rashad “Deuce” Hassan, defended excellently, Josh Steel let fly with a three pointer for the visitors that seemed to be after the shot clock had expired. After a lengthy discussion, the referees decided the basket was good, and the Patriots would have just 3.4 seconds left to overcome a two point deficit. A timeout was called and coach Paul James drew up the final play of the game. The crowd was still at fever pitch as the players returned to the court. The ball was inbounded to Antonio Williams who rounded the three point line looking for a way into the paint. The defensive coverage was too good, and with half a second left in the game, Williams leaped into the air with his defender all over him like a cheap suit, double-pumped the shot, drawing even more contact from the defender and released his shot a fraction before the buzzer sounded. The ball seemed to travel through the air in slow motion. The crowd holding their breath in unison. Finally the ball made contact with the backboard, before nestling neatly and perfectly into the basket and an eruption of screaming, cheering and relief from the home fans. Antonio Williams had hit the buzzer beating game winner and despite the Giants players and coaches protesting whether it was a legitimate three pointer or not, (which it was), the Patriots took the final score 77-76. A truly epic win. Hero of the hour and Patriots Player of the Game, Antonio Williams had this to say post match, “Great team effort! We really have been showing our toughness and togetherness in these last two games. I want to thank the fans too. They definitely were the sixth man today!” These two dramatic wins for the Patriots has seen them climb into the all elusive eighth spot for the first time this season and with it a genuine chance at playoff basketball. Although we are still some way off the end of the season and securing a playoff spot, the Patriots are most certainly moving in the right direction and doing everything in their power to make it into the postseason.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do. Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
