OUR PUSH REMAINS TO ACHIEVE THE PLAYOFFS Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop

It seems an age since we were back at the pavilions, and I know we are all looking forward to seeing the players live again after such a long layoff. Two long away games haven’t been kind to us, and we have struggled in our last two games which have slowed our playoff push. Glasgow was a bit of a shock having been in such good form going into the game and it would appear we just ran out of steam against a resurgent rocks side that have continued to take scalps in the league. Last week’s game against Sheffield I believe was more about having such a long layoff without a game and in both we had enough chances to get a result. With only a handful of games left this season we welcome a Leicester side who can win the title if they win tonight which will give them added incentive to deliver today. However, as we have shown many times this season, we can now compete with any team in the league, and we look to get zoned in to confirm our place in the playoffs. To be discussing playoff positions at this stage of the season shows how far this club has come against tremendous adversity and no one was

expecting the amount of wins we have currently, let alone the amount we plan to have at the end of the season. I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved this year and look forward to the team clicking down the home straight to achieve some playoff basketball this year. Off the court we continue to develop foundations for future growth. We are engaging with a number of schools and colleges regarding the club’s academy which we plan to start in September 2022. Our pathway is key and embedded into the culture of the club and we are excited to finally be able to make these plans a reality. In other exciting news we have announced a new partnership with Gym bubbas starting new classes for children 2-6 years which develops ball skills across a whole wide range of sports and not just basketball. We’re very excited about this collaboration which is unique in Plymouth and one we look forward to growing over the coming months. So, let’s get back in our seats and roar the patriots for these final games of the season. It’s going to be nail biting, but I don’t think this team know any other way!

A WORD FROM

COACH PJ SPONSORED BY

Good afternoon and welcome to the Plymouth Pavilions for this evenings BBL championship game against champions elect Leicester Riders. It’s nearly been a month since we last played in front of our fantastic supporters and having had nearly three weeks off without a game. The timing of this break was not great as at the time we were playing with great confidence and momentum and were heading in the right direction. Getting back to the way we were playing was always going to prove difficult last week against a Sheffield team that had picked up some good wins in recent weeks. It was a low scoring affair, and we certainly looked a little rusty coming off the break and only managing to score 61 points. Defensively keeping Sheffield to 71 points in the game was a good effort, but our scoring let us down on the evening. Now we have to try and bounce back against a team that you have to tip your hat too. Leicester have set the standard for many years now and once again have shown out to be the most consistent team in the league having only lost two league games this season. They only need one more win to wrap up the league title and we will be doing our upmost to

make sure that it doesn’t happen on our court and at the same time pick up a valuable win as we try to secure a playoff position. This is a big game for both teams, for two very different reasons! This is the point of the season where there’s no room to carry passengers. Everyone on the team needs to bring their best game and if we can do that, we have a really great chance of making the playoffs in our first season as the Plymouth City Patriots, something we weren’t in a position to even discuss pre-Christmas. We have made some great improvements as the season has gone on and I’ve been especially pleased with the efforts, hard work and fight we have shown for the most part of the season. We’ve played some excellent basketball at times and set the bar where we’ve tried not to drop below, but to keep improving. We now need to make our best efforts yet in our five remaining games and we will end up where we deserve to be in the end, but we need to battle for every minute, for every point! I would like to give a warm welcome to Coach Rob Paternostro, his players, and staff for this BBL championship game.

GO PATRIOTS!

MATCH REPORT The Plymouth City Patriots travelled to Sheffield to face the Sharks on Friday night, and despite a gutsy performance, they came away with a loss. It’s a relatively rare occurrence at this stage of the season to be announcing a Patriots loss. Their run prior to last Friday night’s game was seven wins in eleven games which has given them a very good opportunity at making the playoffs this season. However, it was a tough ask for the Patriots, facing a team in the top three of the British Basketball League (BBL), after a full two weeks without a competitive fixture. The lengthy rest period at this stage of the season did not suit the Patriots at all, who looked a little out of sorts, needing until at least half time to blow away some of the cobwebs. To their credit, they managed to keep the game close at the half, despite trailing by as many as fifteen points and regardless of their opposition they’ve developed the very useful trait of being able to keep any game close. This would remain the case for the majority of the game with the Sharks constantly pushing the tempo. Late in the game after a courageous performance from Rowell Graham-Bell (18 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal & 1 block), the Patriots made a final surge and closed the gap to just four points. However, the sharp shooting Sharks had an answer for every Patriot point and once the home team found their range from the three point line, the game was over. The Sharks stretched it to a ten point lead and held on until the final buzzer. In Sheffield the Patriots had the support of a dedicated travelling fan, Peter Waumsley, sat in the front row of the Ponds Forge Arena with some Patriot players’ families. He was seen (and heard), making as much noise as possible for the visiting team. The bulk of support however, would appear in the form of a ‘watch party’ live from Marjons University campus. The event, hosted by the Patriots, was a great success, despite the final result on the court. At least one hundred fans packed the bar and seated area at Marjons, and were treated to a big screen for the main event, plus pre game build up and general basketball chat through timeouts and the end of each quarter from their resident commentary team, Paul Nicholson and myself. The atmosphere was electric and despite the way the game unfolded, the Patriots fans remained positive throughout, willing their team on. This kind of event is a relative anomaly in British Basketball particularly in recent years. Perhaps in the games hay day back in the nineties and noughties this might have happened for major games and even playoff games, but a regular season away game? I’m not sure i have ever seen it. The turnout was exceptional for the random Friday night game and something the club will certainly look to repeat for future away games. The Patriots now sit in the seventh seed with eighteen points, hanging precariously in the danger zone. They must achieve eighth or higher to reach the playoffs and do have the ability in the squad to remain in a playoff spot come the end of the season. They’re certainly not out of the woods just

yet though. Their remaining fixtures include two games against the best team in the country the Leicester Riders, as well as Surrey Scorchers, Glasgow Rocks and Newcastle Eagles. The latter two teams are also in the race for the eighth spot and both games could help seal the fate of each team involved. The Rocks are just above the Patriots with twenty points and the Eagles currently have sixteen points, just one win away. Adam Masters, top BBL pundit is not worried however, saying “ The Patriots are just too good…” in a recent podcast. He continued “ They’ve got a relatively tough run into the end of the season, but with the likes of Antonio Williams and Rashad Hassan plus Graham-Bell and Elvisi Dusha coming off the bench they’ll be ok. I can see them beating the Rocks and the Eagles, and I can even see them pinching a win from the champs, the Leicester Riders. If anyone can, it’s Plymouth.” The good news for the Patriots is that they hold their destiny in their own hands. As long as they can match the Newcastle Eagles results as they head into the business end of the season and notch up a win over the northern based team, they’ll make the playoffs. Further good news is that their bitter rivals, the Bristol Flyers have been dragged into the playoff race. They currently occupy the eighth spot on sixteen points, just two points behind the Patriots, however the Pats won two out of the three games against the Flyers this season, giving them the head to head. Should the Patriots and Flyers finish the season on equal points, the Patriots would place above them in the table based on these results. Not only this, the Flyers haven’t won a game since 11th March, losing their last four in a row. This potentially puts the Patriots in the driving seat, giving them a distinct advantage heading towards the Playoffs. There are limited opportunities to see the Pats again in the regular season as there are only three home games remaining at Pavilions. The final game of the season against the Eagles is already sold out, however tickets are available for this Wednesday’s game 7pm tip off and the Glasgow Rocks game on Wednesday 13th March, also a 7pm start. Should the Patriots make the playoffs they will certainly be the hottest tickets in town!

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do. Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
