WERE CREATING SOMETHING SPECIAL IN PLYMOUTH Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
Never has there been a better time to be a patriot’s fan and I welcome you back to the pavilions following another amazing performance away against Newcastle Eagles. This team just doesn’t know when they are beat and the togetherness in the roster is amazing. I was lucky enough to sit behind these guys on Friday night and the way they pull together at key moments is amazing and I’m truly proud of what they are achieving. And on the subject of achieving its amazing this week we received not one but two BBL of the month awards. Our first being Antonio Williams as player of the month which is richly deserved with the way he has performed lately and accompanied by coach of the month for PJ who is turning this team into one nobody is relishing to face. I’m particularly proud of both of these awards for Antonio and PJ as they have been instrumental in developing the winning mentality we want at the club as we develop the “Patriot’s way” and our identity as a club. We go into this game with a lot of confidence and Cheshire are certainly a team we have history with, the guys will be relishing the opportunity to reverse the result of our previous games.
We hope the introduction of Troy Simons will help tip the balance and believe he will prove a valued addition to the squad both offensively and defensively as we go down the stretch this season. Troy has fitted in really well with the team and its clearly evident his playing time with Antonio previously which will bode well for the future. I would also like to give a special mention to Deuce who along with Antonio got player of the week recently and I believe he is playing some of his best basketball in this team. An adopted Janner, he is relishing his time back at the pavilions and we look forward to supporting him to keep racking up those milestones. Off the court we started our new session “Little ballers” which is a basketball specific session for children aged 4-7 which has been really warmly received and we hope to have news of a really exciting mixed sport initiative we are launching soon. It’s so exciting to have new news every month to share with the fans and its really exciting both on and off the court the way the club is progressing As much as we enjoy our success, we will also today be sharing our thoughts with those in Ukraine who are having to deal with unimaginable conditions and our prayers and support are with them.

A WORD FROM
COACH PJ SPONSORED BY
Good evening and welcome to the Plymouth Pavilions for today’s BBL Championship match against Cheshire Phoenix. Friday, we travelled up to Newcastle to take on the Eagles who had had a resurgence of form as they brought back Justin Gordon for his second spell with them. The Newcastle Eagles are a very formidable team. They have great quality, strength, and depth throughout their roster and are led by one of the best point guards to have played in the BBL in the form of Rahmon Fletcher. We showed some real grit and toughness on Friday. Once we had got the long journey out of our system, we really started to up the intensity at both ends of the court. As much as 15 points down at one stage we didn’t panic but began to claw our way back into the game in the second half. Winning at Newcastle was very important for the team as it keeps the head-to-head alive with them. This is something that could make the difference between us making the end of season playoffs or not. I am loving the atmosphere around this team at the moment. They are so in tune with each other and the determination and belief they have for one another is very special.
I’m expecting another tough game tonight, but we have continued to show that we are more than a match for any team in the league when we’re all on the same page and commit to the game plan. We are executing our offensive sets well and sharing the ball better than we have done all season. Along with our transition scoring that is more prominent in our games as we pushed the ball very well in now, it’s all making for a wellbalanced team. A big congratulations to Antonio, for picking up the February player of the month. He has been instrumental in the team’s recent change of fortune. An even bigger congratulations to the whole team who have performed amazingly well the past few weeks which in turn meant that I picked up the February coach of the month. This is very much a team award and testament to the work ethic and efforts they have put in during February. Long may it continue! I hope we can continue with our steady progress from now to the end of the season. We need another big team performance tonight.

MATCH REPORT The Plymouth City Patriots faced the difficult challenge of visiting the in-form Newcastle Eagles and their state of the art, purpose built Vertu Motors Arena. Two thousand, eight hundred fans packed the venue, expecting an Eagles win after being on a three game winning streak, although the fighting team spirit of the Patriots had other ideas. It is fair to say that some Eagles fans and former staff remember a version of the Plymouth basketball team that has previously caused them some considerable heartache over the years, going back as far as the 2006-07 British Basketball League (BBL) Trophy Final. The final would be held at the Eagles home court, and the historically great franchise were heavy favourites going into what was essentially a home game. The Plymouth team would be victorious against all odds taking the game 74-65 and ruining the Eagles celebrations. However, the history of Plymouth upsetting the Eagles at home and in significant matches is not isolated to this occasion. January 11th 2019 is a day that Eagles fans will also not want to remember, as Plymouth made the long journey north once again to halt celebrations on the opening day of the Eagles brand new Vertu Motors Arena. Any chance to beat the Patriots now is perhaps in some ways retribution for former versions of the Plymouth franchise upsetting some pretty key events in the Eagles otherwise storybook history and they would certainly start last Friday nights battle with that very intention. The Eagle flew out of the blocks and opened up an early lead over the Patriots, behind the excellent play of their two target men, Rahmon Fletcher and Justin Gordon. Fletcher, a true BBL great, has enjoyed multiple seasons with the Eagles and added plenty of silverware to the city of Newcastle, not to mention bagging two Most Valuable Player Awards, (MVP) and four finals MVPs along the way. The matchup between him and the Patriots new on court general, Antonio Williams was intriguing and nothing short of spectacular. Both would finish the game with outstanding statistics; Williams 19 points, 4 rebounds, 15 assists and Fletcher 18 points, 2 rebounds and 11 assists, and both would work tirelessly to give their team the best chance of taking home the victory. It would be the Eagles, however, who would go into the half time break with the upper hand, leading 43-33. The ten point lead for the Eagles at half time, with the home crowd vocal and firmly behind them, looked to be a mountain for the Patriots to climb. You could be excused for thinking that the inform Eagles would maybe look to put the game out of reach of the Patriots and dominate the third quarter, setting up an easy jog to the finish line. Who knows, perhaps a former version of the Plymouth team would have let that happen? This particular squad however, had other ideas. The single most impressive thing about this Patriots lineup and the current run they are on, is their ability to keep any game close, regardless of the opposition and regardless of the situation. We’ve seen them trailing by double figures with less than five minutes left in a game, or down by
six points with less that thirty seconds remaining in the fourth and yet somehow they find a way to comeback and more often than not lately, actually win. Indeed they may have been down by ten against the mighty Eagles, but the Patriots showed absolutely no signs of concern. Almost like the players themselves just knew that they would be right there with a chance at the end of the game. It would be the Patriots that started the second half on fire, all but eradicating the ten point lead built up by the home team scoring twenty nine points, behind the hard work and sharp shooting of Rowell Graham-Bell and the scoring and rebounding of perhaps this seasons brightest star, Rashad “Deuce” Hassan. Hassan finished the game with 23 points and 11 rebounds, showing great athleticism and benefiting from Antonio Williams’ sublime passing. The Patriots would continue the impressive scoring in the fourth quarter, once again hitting twenty nine points and putting the game just out of reach of the Eagles, despite Justin Gordon knocking down two three pointers for the home team and the late surge from Rahon Fletcher, who scored nine consecutive points, almost single handedly keeping the Eagles in the game. The Patriots continued their impressive form however, winning this one 91-87. Antonio Williams, Patriots Player of the Game, was over the moon with the result in his post game interview and showed love to his teammates saying “Good team win! I wish we can get a blowout, but I think me and the guys like close games. It was good to come into Newcastle and get a win. I love playing with these guys…” Williams is certainly enjoying the team chemistry that exists in the squad this season. It is something that is essential to a teams success and can be very hard to manufacture, however this combination of players compliment each other brilliantly and stick together through whatever each game throws their way.
The Plymouth City Patriots have once again climbed the BBL Championship table and given themselves a tremendous opportunity to not only make the playoffs, but qualify comfortably. They currently have sixteen points and form part of a four-way tie for fourth place with the Newcastle Eagles, Manchester Giants and London Lions. The Pats will be back in action Tuesday night at Pavilions in the only home game in the month of March. Their opponents, second place Cheshire Phoenix, will be keen to pick up a win on the road and continue their impressive season so far. A win for the Patriots however, could see them climb further up the table and closer to confirming their place in this seasons playoffs.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do. Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
