OUR FIRST WIN AND ANOTHER VICTORY IN THE SOUTHWEST DERBY Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
Great to be able to open my notes following a dramatic overtime win against Bristol which was nothing but a friendly. Both sides wanted to win and with Bristol bringing nine fit players to play, the conditions were no different than a Championship game. It was great to see the team battle and take the game which at parts in the fourth quarter looked like it could be another missed opportunity. The way we clawed our way back and then delivered under pressure in overtime will give the team great confidence and belief to show what they can do. The performances of Antonio Williams and Rashad Hassan were real positives on the night and demonstrated that the tough decisions being made regarding the roster are having the desired effect. It was great to see Deuce bag another MVP performance in front of a packed pavilions crowd and I know he really appreciated being back in front of the Plymouth fans. In relation to the crowd, I wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone that came and packed out the pavilions. The place was rocking, and old and new fans commented on what a fantastic atmosphere and it was really pleasing to have an afternoon like this back in Plymouth. We need to maintain this though and
would urge people to give this level of support throughout the remainder of the season so we can build for the future. Off the court we continue to work hard and in 2022 we have already added two schools and our junior basketball league sessions that add so much to the local community have continued with strong numbers. We have further basketball camps in the pipeline along with delivery of our postponed camp and many more exciting opportunities for the youth of Plymouth to get involved with the club in a real positive way. We also had the positive arrival of Pat the puppy our new mascot who we have been planning over the past few months. Pat demonstrated how cheeky and mischievous he is and was immediately taken to heart by the Patriots fans. We look to have more fun with Pat and really excited to have him as part of our gameday experience. Our journey begins today in the trophy competition against Wales who we warmly welcome and look to continue our winning streak with progression in the competition. Our roster looks dramatically different to the one that last competed in the Cup and with a new year we look improve with some more exciting games at the pavilions.

A WORD FROM
COACH PJ SPONSORED BY
Good afternoon and welcome to the Plymouth Pavilions for today’s BBL Trophy fi rst round game against Team Wales. I hope that everyone had a great festive season and are enjoying the start to the new year. Today’s game against Team Wales is going to be a very tricky game to navigate. One thing we can guarantee when playing any national team, is that you know you’re going to have your hands full. Team Wales are coached by James Bamfi eld, assisted by Thomas Nightingale, Azeb Smalley and Stefan Brosier. They will come and play with National pride, total commitment and a never say die attitude. We must be on our game and make sure that we are prepared to match their efforts at both ends of the court. Play tough and active defence and be clinical with our offensive play. We need to be better again than we were last week against a strong Bristol team. I was frustrated and extremely disappointed with Bristol’s attitude to the game as they were very capable of fi elding a strong team to fulfi l this fi xture properly and this was born out by the nine quality players that they brought to the game on the 29th of December and not the slim 4 and half players that they claimed they only had available. This really made a mockery of the competition, as no team can or should expect to only play games when they have a fully fi t team. It’s a team sport and injuries, now covid cases can happen and that’s why you have a squad of players! What teams need to be doing is trying to do everything within their power to make sure games go ahead and not hide behind so called Covid-protocols and injuries to buy themselves time to get players back healthy and fi t! We have experienced this fi rst-hand and made sure that we fulfi lled our obligation. It’s a real shame that the fl yers organisation seemed not to want to do the same thing. Hopefully the BBL will see this for what it was and do the right thing by making a stand with this kind of behaviour! A warm welcome to Team Wales coaching staff, the players, and staff for this BBL Trophy fi rst round game. Go Patriots!!!

The festive period finally delivered the Plymouth City Patriots with their first win in a packed out Pavilions over South West rivals, Bristol Flyers, in overtime. The home team, spurred on by the capacity crowd, delivered a spectacle that was well worth the admission fee, and exciting from start to finish. Patriots fans were also treated to the unveiling of the club’s new mascot, Pat Riot, a seven foot, bright blue dog, with cheeky antics and serious dunking ability. Pat the Dog would have stolen the show, were it not for the tremendous performance on the court. Fans of the British Basketball League (BBL), will be more than aware of the weekly Top Ten Plays, featured on Hoopsfix Twitter feed and the generally high standard of plays that feature within. High flying dunks and alley-oops, fancy spin moves and passes all find a home in the Hoopsfix Top Ten Plays of the Week, but rarely do all the plays come from one game. In this case, they certainly could. In the first quarter alone we had multiple dunks, killer crossovers and deep threes from both teams. The Patriots new signing, Antonio Williams, standing 6 feet tall, hailing from Chicago, Illinois and playing in the NCAA Division 1 for Kent State, was immensely impressive in just his first outing for the club. He finished the game with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists, in an all round performance. Rowell Graham-Bell also poured in 17 points, as he has continued to cement himself as an indispensable member of the team, doing a lot of the nitty gritty stuff that doesn’t show up in the stats columns. It was also positive for the Patriots to see Denzel Ubiaro back in Pavilions after missing a large chunk of the season with a fractured left hand. He would play a key role off
the bench and add 13 points to the Patriots tally. However, it would be Rashad “Deuce” Hassan, playing his first game back in Plymouth for over a year, who would absolutely steal the show. Deuce, playing in front of the packed Pavilions crowd, including his own family, would dominate in the paint from start to finish, scoring a game high 35 points and adding 8 rebounds, including a key offensive rebound and put back basket that would force the game into overtime. And it would be an overtime that the Patriots would dominate becoming outright winners, taking the final score 101-92, despite being ten points down with less than six minutes left in the fourth quarter. Carl Heslop, Plymouth City Patriots owner was beyond excited, “We’re absolutely delighted with the players! To win against Bristol in front of a packed Plymouth Pavilions, it shows how far the club has come this season…” Heslop did give recognition to the visitors and had a response regarding the quality of the Patriots opposition, “... Bristol played with new American signings, but it wasn’t enough against us. Not tonight. The atmosphere was electric and I look forward to having many more nights like this throughout the remainder of the season.” And why not, the depth in the Patriots squad and the players returning from injury makes this current group of players, the best version of the Patriots under Heslop’s ownership. This current squad is generating a great deal of interest around the league with pundits and fans alike. With the BBL Trophy set to tip off this month, the Patriots could certainly mount a solid cup run to entertain the one thousand plus, regular Pavilions attendees. There is also the genuine potential to make a
run at this season’s BBL Playoffs, which would require the Patriots to finish in eighth place or higher. Quite a tall order, except to say that currently the Patriots are only six points away from the eighth place spot. Josh Bett, a BBL pundit on the Below The Rim panel and son for the former BBL Coach of the year Mick Bett, has his opinion on the Patriots, “I like what Carl has done. He’s assembled a very nice squad that now has depth in pretty much every position. With regards to making the playoffs, it’s a tall order. But I’ve seen crazier things. Let’s not forget the Leicster Riders won the Playoffs from the eighth seed back in 2001, and had to put together a run to get there. The Patriots arguably have more depth than the Riders did. I can see a good Trophy run though. They have the firepower to upset teams.” Optimistic response from the notoriously critical pundit and begs the question, why not?
GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do. Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
