A great gameday A word from the coach Junior Basketball Fixtures The team at a glance Meet the team Today’s visitors Match report
ITS NOT HOW WE START ITS HOW WE FINISH Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
Following another great atmosphere at last Sunday’s game, we have barely had time to draw breath until were back at the pavilions against Bristol Flyers in our local derby.
supportive, and we look forward to working closely together in the future to drive Plymouth sport and jointly create as many opportunities for the city as we can.
Games involving both sides are always entertaining and I’m sure that tonight’s game will not be any different. It was a really tough encounter last time in the cup, and we warmly welcome Bristol again to the familiar territory of the pavilions.
As we welcome both Bristol and Albion, we sadly have to say goodbye to Foxy the mascot. Foxy has also been tremendously supportive to the Plymouth City Patriots, and we were honoured to have his participation in our initial home games. The impact that Foxy has had on Plymouth Basketball over the last few decades is immeasurable and we all have our famous Foxy moment that we can call upon. The Nandos Chicken might not be too sad to see the back of Foxy but everyone at the club will be saddened when he finally does his last dunk. Take a bow Foxy, you did your job, and we salute you.
We also welcomed a large proportion of our JBL children with their family and friends to the last game who really added to the game experience. For many it was their first game and to see new people enjoying live basketball for the first time makes all the hard work the club is doing worthwhile. I can’t wait to see how animated they will get when we start winning games! The roster is forming nicely behind the scenes, and we look forward to having our key players back from the sidelines. Elvisi and Kingsley were key pieces of the club recruitment and results have shown that not having them has made a difference. We look forward to having a fullstrength side very soon and you never know there could be some further news very shortly. One thing you can’t accuse our team of is effort and the way the players have still chased games in the 4th quarter proves their commitment to the cause and it’s that work ethic that will prove invaluable at the season progresses. We also welcome the mighty Plymouth Albion who are joining us today as our very special guests. Since the changes in Plymouth Basketball, Albion have been tremendously

A WORD FROM
COACH PJ SPONSORED BY
Good evening and welcome to the Plymouth Pavilions for today’s BBL cup group stage game against Bristol Flyers. On Sunday against London Lions, I thought after the first quarter we showed some good qualities and fought back well against a team that was built for European competition and who were also on the day shooting the ball exceptionally well. When you look at the statistics, we were able to shoot the ball the same number of times as London with the difference being they obviously made more shots than we did. On reviewing the game film, we created some very good and wide-open scoring chances, this is a good sign for us. If we can now start to convert some of these chances, we will give ourselves a chance of being in a game at the end and this is where we need to be if we are to give ourselves a chance of winning a game. There are a few things that we can control and need to get better at, but the determination and effort is there and once we have a few more fit bodies we will be able to rotate the bench and be in a better position moving forward. Today, Foxy sadly makes his last appearance for the team. I am saddened and very disappointed by this and feel more upset for the many children and families who have been engaged by Foxy when at Plymouth games.
In the BBL, Foxy has been the standard for every mascot to follow and thus far no other mascot has come close to doing what he does. Foxy has been and will remain the number one mascot in the country and personally would like to thank him for all that he has done to increase the number of people attending games and taking the game day experience to another level. Foxy, a massive thank you for everything you have done, you have been the best. It’s going to be another tough test for our team tonight, but I hope once again we will show signs of improvement. I would like to give a warm welcome to Bristol’s coaching staff, the players, and staff for this BBL cup group stage game.
FOXY HAS BEEN AND WILL REMAIN THE NUMBER ONE MASCOT IN THE COUNTRY!

A tough order faced the Plymouth City Patriots this week in the BBL Cup Southern Conference and in terms of their opening home schedule, the fixtures have not been kind. Last week, the Pats faced the reigning BBL League Champions, Leicester Riders and this week their backs were against the wall once again, facing the richest club in the country, London Lions. The Lions, and their star studded squad, rolled into town fresh from a dominant win in the FIBA EuroCup, full of confidence. And why not. The London Lions, complete with NBA G League players and BBL stars, created history in their debut EuroCup game last week, defeating former semi finalists in the competition, Donar Groningen by 24 points, dominating the Dutch team from start to finish and keeping them to just 55 points. Once again Patriots would be clear underdogs and perhaps have the impossible task of simply keeping the score “respectable.” The evening began with the usual spectacle, a combination of clever lighting, dramatic tension, a perfect routine from the Patriots cheerleaders and the booming PA system. The team, lead out by Foxy this week, was once again without starting point guard Elvisi Dusha and the big man in the middle, Kingsely Okoroh. Both are expected to be fully fit by the time the League Championship games commence and both would have helped make a difference on the night. And what a tough night it was. The Lions opted to leave two of their better players back in London to give them extra rest ahead of their second midweek FIBA Eurocup game this Wednesday, which unfortunately had little impact on their dominance. Despite the Patriots working hard from the opening tip off,
and never giving up until the final whistle, the Lions proved to be too good. The scoreline, an improvement on last week’s blowout to the Leicester Riders, was 101-62, and at one point in the second quarter, was just a single digit lead to Lions. However, unforced turnovers and missed shots allowed the reigning BBL Trophy Champions to open up a comfortable lead, with their efficient offense and deadly three point range. “We started off slow again today…” said Head Coach Paul James in his post game interview, “… Second quarter we settled down a bit and I thought we played a pretty good quarter, and actually for the game I felt we didn’t do too badly. We created some good scoring opportunities, but we just aren’t making any shots right now.” The Patriots shooting for the night were indeed poor once again, managing only 50% from two point range and a measly 20% from the three point line, the worst percentage in the BBL. When you compare that to the Lions 60% from two pointers and 54% from three, it was always going to be a tough afternoon. Patriots MVP for the game and indeed my personal pick for the Player of the Game, Cam King, shared his coach’s sentiments, but also added, “I feel like we need to lock in on defence… I felt their bigs could catch the ball in comfort and do pretty much what they wanted, so we need to be that little bit more aggressive…” The Patriots played the majority of the fourth quarter without their captain and leading scorer, Denzel Ubiaro. Denz, with 14 points on the night, was benched after receiving a technical foul for arguing a call from the referee. Clearly frustrated, he continued his frustration into the Patriots huddle, and Coach PJ decided that perhaps it was time Denz had a well earned rest. It was a tough night for Denz, as the Lions clearly had worked on a game plan to mark him
tightly from the opening tip off. Not only that, he was often double or triple teamed every time he touched the ball. This did lead to some very impressive highlights from Denz, as he continued to go to the basket, despite the majority of the opposition’s team waiting there for him. As always, Denz left it all out on the court, but despite that, PJ was impressed with the remaining players,” The fourth quarter I thought we did ok. We started sharing the ball a little bit more, A lot of work to do still, but a lot of positives as well…” It’s hard to see what else the Patriots can do to improve as this season moves forward. Yes the scoreline on the night and the way the team played was an improvement from the previous week, and yes, the long awaited return of Elvisi Dusha and Kingsley Okoroh will definitely make a difference, but what more can they do? Coach PJ had an answer, “We have to work hard, everyday in training we have to try and get better… We start making our shots and it’s a different ball game.” And with PJ it is more than optimism. He has been in and around the BBL as a player and a coach since the very beginning in 1987, and even before that, playing in a time before the three point line was added to the game in the 70’s. He has literally seen it all, and more importantly perhaps, won it all. From his days as a Thames Valley Tiger, to his coaching success with Surrey United ( now Scorchers), he has the experience the Patriots need moving forward. “We’ve got to be better on Wednesday than we were today… We have to keep on progressing in every game.” Wednesday night the Bristol Flyers come to town, in what genuinely should be a closer affair. The Patriots have already faced the Flyers in their first game of the season, in what turned out to be a hard fought loss 84-75. Now with more games under their belt and the force of the Pavilions faithful behind them, the Patriots will look to make a real game of it, and potentially notch up their first win.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do. Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
