FOUR IN A ROW – PATRIOTS PUT ON A SHOW Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
Welcome back to the pavilions and the scene of our first championship win against the Surrey Scorchers in front of the UK’s sky sports audience. It was great to put on a show and such a professional performance to comfortably take the win down the stretch. This was the first game we had everyone available and fit and it’s great that together the roster is able to show what they can do. We then took our form to Manchester and completed another great performance beating the second placed team in the league convincingly and showing a maturity away from home. Pleasingly we had scorers across the board and at times where crucial points and professional performances were needed, we delivered at key moments. Watching the team practice this week there’s a real sense of hunger and desire to put on a good performance every game and talent mixed with a great work ethic will bode us well for the remainder of the season. I’ve been impressed with what we have managed to achieve with a small crew behind the scenes and the team has also delivered off the court as well as on, literally. This week we welcome another addition to the Patriots family in Luca Andrew Nicholson and we wish Paul and Sophie all the best at this special time. Let’s hope Paul
gets to tune in on Paternity leave in between feeding time! Our new sponsorship brochure has gone live and there are plenty of opportunities to support the club this season as we look forward to more exciting games in the second half of the campaign. As we grow our audience continually over the season attracting new fans and companies it has been great to welcome new businesses this month that haven’t engaged with Plymouth Basketball previously. Were also adding additional products and merchandise to our website all the time and look forward to bringing you exciting news about plans for the future across the whole of the club. Today is a great opportunity for the club to progress into a semi-final of a BBL competition which many didn’t believe was possible. We however know the team that will face Cheshire will be vastly different from the team they faced previously, and we can go into this tie full of confidence. To say I’m proud of this team is an understatement with the challenges we have faced this season and we look forward to continuing to grow as a team and as a community.

A WORD FROM
COACH PJ SPONSORED BY
Good evening and welcome to the Plymouth Pavilions for today’s BBL Trophy quarter final match against Cheshire Phoenix. Today’s game is a huge game for both teams with the winner going on to play either Glasgow Rocks or Solent Kestrels. Our last couple of games in the championship saw the team play Surrey Scorchers live on Sky sports and then up to Manchester two days later to play the high flying second placed Giants team. We had a very good week of preparation leading into these games and I was delighted our application and determination in both games. Surrey was a little bit of a scrappy game in part, but we played well enough in key moments of the game to come out on top and giving us our first championship win of the season. I was really pleased with the way we closed out the game, showing real composure down the stretch. Against a very strong and deep Manchester team two days later we would not only need to take the momentum from the game before, but to put in an improved performance. Our first half performance was the best we had played to date as we opened a 20-point lead which was never to be relinquished. We executed our offensive sets very well, shared the ball better than we have done in previous games and pushed the ball well in transition. It’s always tough to continue playing at such a high level and there could have been a tendency to try and protect that lead by playing not to lose the game. But once again, I thought we did a really good job in keeping our heads even when the Giants came back at us a little in the fourth quarter. We showed great poise and composure to pick up our second win of the season and more importantly keeping our playoff ambitions alive! That win gives us great confidence and belief in knowing that not only can we compete with these teams, but we can also beat them too. I hope we can continue with our steady progress and put in another big team performance again today. Go Patriots!!!

MATCH REPORT It was a great weekend for fans of the Plymouth City Patriots, who added two wins to their tally, making for an impressive four game winning streak in all competitions. The weekend began early for the Patriots, who managed to get their first league win of the season at Pavilions Friday night against an inconsistent but impressive Surrey Scorchers, who toppled the richest team in the land, the London Lions, only a few weeks ago. The Scorchers, prior to the start of the game, sat one place ahead of the Patriots in the British Basketball League (BBL) table in the ninth spot, but by the end of the game the home team had recorded a comfortable victory, thus leapfrogging the visitors and looking forward to their away trip to the on form Manchester Giants. Coach Paul James was impressed with his team’s Friday night performance,” It was great to pick up our first win in the Championship…” he said in his post game interview,”... We did some really good things at both ends of the court…” The Patriots held a big lead heading into the final four minutes of the game, and had to endure one last push from the Scorchers, trying to upset the Patriots in front of the home crowd and the SkySports cameras, capturing every second for fans at home. But the Patriots controlled the tempo well and weathered the storm. Coach James was again complimentary of his team, saying “... We showed composure down the stretch as they upped the tempo, but we closed the game out very well.” The outstanding performance of the night would no doubt belong to the Patriots newest signing, Antonio Williams, with an impressive 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, including a 69% field goal percentage and a number of highlight plays that brought the crowd to its feet on multiple occasions. Williams certainly was a large contributing factor to the final score which went in favour of the Patriots, 82-73 and an impressive first win in the league championship. The Patriots attention then turned immediately to Sunday afternoon and the long haul to the north of England, where this season’s BBL Cup finalists and a team that is currently second in the BBL table, Manchester Giants, laid in wait. The Patriots would have supreme confidence in their abilities after winning four games in succession, across all BBL competitions and rolled into the Bell-View Arena as foes, not mere foils. They took the game straight to the Giants and surmounted an impressive 17 point lead by half time that sent an eerie silence among the home fans. Things would not improve for the home team, as the visiting Patriots would continue to hold a commanding lead right up until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter, when the inevitable late charge came from the Giants. The Patriots, as they did so well on Friday night, would once again weather the storm
and control the final seconds to come away with an 84-77 win, considered something of an upset at this stage of the season. Rashad Hassan would impress with a double double, 23 points and 12 rebounds, playing a major role in the Patriots win. Credit also to Kofi Josephs, who managed 20 points off the bench in only twenty two minutes played. It would also be a landmark evening for Elvisi Dusha, who on the night, achieved a career total of 1000 assists putting him just outside the top ten all-time assist leaders. All in all it was a very impressive weekend for the Patriots, and they received some kind words and inspiration from a former player and true Plymouth basketball legend, after he returned Friday night as part of the Sky Sports commentary crew. Ant Rowe, a name synonymous with not just Plymouth fans, but fans of the BBL in general, had this to say,”It is always special for me returning to my hometown and it’s been great to witness the positivity surrounding the Patriots as of late. I’ve been present at both the BBL trophy win against Team Wales and the BBL league match win against Surrey and it’s fantastic to see the Pavilions rocking again!” The Plymouth faithful have been in great voice and with the homecoming of one of their biggest heroes, the fans flocked to Rowe for autographs and photos. Rowe also added,” Thinking back to the summer when Plymouth didn’t even have a professional basketball team makes picking up their first BBL game that little bit more remarkable.” And he’s right. The skeptics have certainly had their opinions on the Patriots, with more than a few predicting that they wouldn’t even win a game. Yet here we are, with two league wins in three days and a solid fan base that has every right to be optimistic about the remainder of the season. BBL Playoffs 2022, get ready, the Patriots are coming.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do. Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
