BACK TO THE PAVILIONS AND BACK TO THE LEAGUE Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop
We take breath and dive straight into BBL action with our second home game in 3 days against the mighty London lions. With a disappointing result in Europe this week I’m sure they will be in Plymouth with all guns blazing to get their championship campaign on track. We regroup following a disappointing result against Cheshire which not only didn’t give the result we wanted but also took Rowell out of the game very early which affected us. Cheshire came and bullied us for long stretches of the game, and we need to be professional enough to ride that out and show a clinical edge to our finishing. Albeit frustrating, the fact we were hugely disappointed at not progressing in the cup shows a greater optimism at the club at what these players are capable of achieving. We have shown flashes of the talent that is at the club, and we need to bring that more consistently as we move the club forward. Off the court we continue to grow with our junior basketball league going from strength to strength and schools already looking to book
in already for next season. We’ve also some exciting news regarding a different type of basketball camp this February and make sure to keep your eyes peeled with that announcement. Were also busily recruiting for new community volunteer coaches to be part of our junior basketball league and if you want to become part of the team then do not hesitate to get in touch and join something that provides a really good service to the children of Plymouth. Were also on the verge of announcing some new community partnerships alongside local authority and educational establishments which will further grow our links and provide even greater benefit to the communities we serve. These partnerships take a while to come to fruition, but it is a clear vision of Plymouth City Patriots to ensure we give something back. Back to the court and let’s get behind our team to give London a competitive game and get people on the edge of the seats. The team were a bit bruised from the Cheshire game and here’s to them bouncing back with a committed performance for the home fans.
THEY MAY BE THE LIONS BUT LET’S GIVE THEM THE ROAR OF THE PAVILIONS!

A WORD FROM
COACH PJ SPONSORED BY
Good evening and welcome to the Plymouth Pavilions for today’s BBL Championship match against London Lions After the disappointment of Wednesdays game against Cheshire in the BBL trophy quarter final, we will be looking to put in a much-improved performance against a very strong Lions team. The lions who have also been playing in European competition this season, have put together a very formidable team. They have great quality, strength and depth throughout their roster. This is going to be a very difficult game for us if we are not fully focused and in the right frame of mind to challenge and compete from the very beginning. With only a playoff position now to play for I’m looking for a positive reaction from all the players here on in. We know we can be so much better as we still have not had a moment or game, where everyone has played to their full potential. This has to be our aim as we move forward with games coming a plenty!

A break away from inflexible ways of working; a positive culture with better interaction with clients. This is Beverston. Too often clients of accountancy firms don’t feel valued. They’re just a number in the filing cabinet. In our line of business, building positive relationships matters. Our purpose is to understand our clients’ businesses, their problems and aspirations. Listening gives us the understanding to provide a better value service, which is advisory, attentive and tailored to the client’s needs. Whether you’re a start-up or an established family business, it makes a refreshing difference. We work in partnership with Xero. Xero provide simple accounting software which enables small business owners manage their finances in real time. Our team are experts and can provide support wherever you are. We are delighted to have been involved with the birth of Plymouth City Patriots and proud to be supporters. We look forward to getting together with friends and family to cheer on the team.

MATCH REPORT With the Plymouth City Patriots hoping to make Wednesday night’s clash against Cheshire Phoenix their fourth successive win in all British Basketball League (BBL) competitions, expectations were high. However, in front of a healthy crowd at Pavilions, the home team would ultimately come up short. On a cold winter’s evening in Plymouth, the Patriots seemed confident ahead of their BBL Trophy Quarter Final fixture and with good reason. Their last three outings have been very successful, recording big wins over the Welsh National team and the Surrey Scorchers, not to mention toppling this weekend’s BBL Cup Finalists, the Manchester Giants, in an upset win. However, the Cheshire Phoenix, themselves on an impressive four wins in their last six games, as well as reaching the BBL Cup Semi Finals earlier this season, most definitely had other ideas. The Patriots would start the game in a very positive fashion, flying out of the blocks to an early lead and stifling the Phoenix offense on a number of occasions in the opening five minutes. Thereafter the opposition’s coach, Ben Thomas, made a number of adjustments, including sending Larry Austin Junior in off the bench to turn up the Phoenix defensive intensity. And turn it up, he did. He instantly stole the ball from Patriots guard Antonio Williams, and scored. Austin would add two more steals in the first quarter alone, with the visitors taking the lead, which they would not relinquish, going ahead by as many as twenty points and holding off any Patriot comeback until the final buzzer. The final score 88-77 in favour of the visitors. It was not to be Patriots’ night. They were unable to match the away side’s defensive intensity and struggled to hit shots throughout the game. Rowell Graham-Bell only managed a couple of minutes before landing gingerly on his left leg and hobbling off the court straight into the locker room, never to return. Hopefully his injury won’t be a lengthy one, as the Patriots missed his intensity and strength under the basket. Adam “Adz” Masters, top BBL pundit and co-host of the Below The Rim show was shocked by the result,” I did not see that coming…” said Adz, post game, “... It’s not so much the result, Cheshire are a great team with some seasoned professionals and Team GB players, but the manner of the result was not what I predicted.” Adz, who has always held a soft spot for both the Patriots and the Phoenix was certainly under the impression it should have been a close game,”... I could see maybe a three or four point swing in either team’s favour, but a confident eleven point win was not
expected!” Adz was, however, still confident for the Patriots looking forward,” It’s good in a way because they can just focus on the league now and making the playoffs must be a priority. Plenty of time for the Pats to come good.” One positive from the night was the outstanding all round effort by Rashad “Deuce” Hassan. Hassan was the leading scorer for the game with 22 points and continued his consistently good performances, being crowned the Patriots’ Player of the Game. The evening was also not without its usual high level of entertainment. Both Antonio Williams and Denzel Ubiaro completed multiple highlight reel dunks, much to the delight of the home fans and Pat the Dog, Patriots’ new mascot, brought the crowd to its feet with his regular third quarter trampoline dunk. All in all it was not the result the Patriots expected. Now they must turn their attention to tonight’s tough game against the richest team in the land, the London Lions, and hope to cause an upset similar to the one against Manchester Giants just twelve days ago.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do. Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
