ANOTHER GAME AND ANOTHER WIN – THE SKYS THE LIMIT Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop

It was great to be back at the pavilions again and put on such a measured performance and win against team wales. Although the difference in ability was clear in the first half, I think the players showed a great deal of respect to the team and used the time well to run through some sets. We eagerly now await Cheshire in the quarter finals and look forward to packing the pavilions to give us every chance to progress into the next round and a road to the Semi Finals. What an achievement it would be to get to the later stages of the competition and hope we can count on your support. It’s now back to BBL Championship business and we always welcome the visit of our friends Surrey Scorchers to the pavilions with games against both sides proving to be competitive. Both rosters look different to the last time the teams met and it will prove to be a battle of who can gain some much-needed points and with surrey beating London Lions we are sure their tails will be up. As we have been awarded the best kit in the league it was great to see so many replica kits at the last game and although many have yet to arrive from Kappa, we look forward to seeing a sea of teal, white and black patriot’s jerseys over the coming months.

Due to numerous requests, we have also issued the fans an opportunity to purchase mini season tickets for the last 7 games of the season. It’s great that due to our new fanbase these seats are in demand and look forward to welcoming everyone to the pavilions for the later stages of the season. Our junior basketball league continues to gain momentum and we are pleased despite additional covid measures in place that we have strong numbers for all our sessions. We are also adding a new little ballers session in the next term, so the club is really excited to now have the ability to train children from ages 4 to 16 and ensure that basketball coaching is available for all. We’ve also been really pleased to see the reaction to Pat Riot our new mascot who has found himself right at home at the Pavilions. To see all the children, get really fond of him in a short space of time makes us really proud and look forward to seeing how much mischief he can get up to this season. Attendances are rising and we would like to thank everyone for their continued support which is so valuable this season which we need to keep growing. Spread the word that this is the best show in town and let’s continue to grow the next generation of Basketball fans.

LET’S MAKE IT A HAT-TRICK!

A WORD FROM

COACH PJ SPONSORED BY

Good afternoon and welcome to the Plymouth Pavilions for today’s BBL Championship game against Surrey Scorchers. Today’s game is also being shown live on Sky Sports, which adds a little more incentive for the team to perform at its highest level this evening. Last week I had a chance to give everyone a good run out in the game against team Wales in the BBL Trophy first round. We had a very good week of practice leading up to the Wales game and for the first time this season we had our full complement of players. We were able to work on some of the little things that have been lacking from some of our performances and I thought it was clear to see the improvement we made just from having that time together with everyone. I thought we did some good things during the game at both ends of the floor, and were professional in our approach. We executed our offensive sets well, shared the ball better than we have done in previous games and pushed the ball well in transition. All these things we still need to improve on, but it was a big step in the right direction. Defensively we also went about the job in hand well and made life difficult for the Team Wales side by the way we were aggressive and determined not to allow them easy baskets. It was also nice that I was able to give our Marjon students, Isaiah, Liam, and Dan some decent time on court. They work hard week in week out in training and so It was good to be able to reward them in this game. I’m hoping that we can get the second half of our championship season off to a good start against a Surrey team who managed to pick up a good win against the London Lions on New Years Day. If we are to make a run for a playoff spot, these are the games that are must wins for us. So, this is a massive game for us today. I would like to give a warm welcome to Coach Creon, his players, and staff for this BBL Championship game. Go Patriots!!!

Plymouth City Patriots picked up their second straight home win Sunday afternoon, with a convincing 113-66 victory to the delight of the home fans. Basketball Wales were to be the whipping boys on a fresh winter’s afternoon, making the journey to Plymouth and hoping to have an opportunity to advance to the next round. However, what greeted them was a vastly superior and well orchestrated Patriots team, coached by Paul James, who have found a new lease of life since the addition of Rashad “Deuce” Hassan and Antonio Williams to their new-look roster and both would contribute greatly to the win. The almost sold-out Pavilions were treated to a very dominant Patriots team, the likes of which they had yet to see in the British Basketball League (BBL) this season. The Patriots, who were able to give playing time to all that were listed on the team sheet, flew out of the blocks and started the game with a 13-2 scoring run and never looked back. They were in complete control of the contest from the opening tip off, until the final buzzer, with the home team players sharing the ball and playing with a confidence they’ve perhaps been lacking in previous week’s. One of the more impressive achievements of Sunday’s game was the professionalism and discipline the team had throughout the contest. With such a noticeable skill difference between the Wales squad and the Patriots, it would have been easy for the home side to slip into some bad habits and force shots, showboat or switch off completely. Impressively this did not happen. Instead, the Patriots conducted themselves with great discipline throughout, running their plays and taking the high percentage shots. “Today was a

great win for us and a great way to start the new year..” said Denzel Ubiaro, fully recovered from his fractured wrist he suffered before the new year. “This week in practice we emphasised sharing the ball and creating easy scoring opportunities and that definitely translated to today’s win.” Ubiaro finished the game with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists in just over 23 minutes playing time. In fact Ubiaro would have the lion’s share of minutes, which is testament to just how coach James used all of his available squad members. “Now it’s time to lock in and build on this performance, in order to produce the same result on Friday…” added Ubiaro, rightly optimistic regarding the Patriots upcoming Friday night clash with Surrey Scorchers, themselves hovering above the foot of the league table. The sentiment of Ubiaro’s post game interview were echoed by his coach Paul James, also impressed with his team’s performance and keen to face the Scorchers, “This game was about us and how we want to move forward the remainder of the season. Everyone contributed in a positive way. Great energy and teamwork. We can look ahead with confidence.” The

Patriots

will

advance

to

the

quarter finals where they will take on the Cheshire Phoenix and some pundits believe they have a legitimate opportunity at a good cup run. Adam Master, renowned BBL pundit known affectionately as Adz, was very positive regarding

the

Patriots,”There’s

no

doubt that the Pats have depth. I mean who wants to face Denz, Dusha, Joe Hart or Kofi when they’re firing on all cylinders… Add Rashad Hassan into the mix and that’s a hell of a squad!” He was also complimentary of head coach Paul James,” PJ has too much experience and talent on this roster and there’s no reason they can’t make a late push for

the Playoffs. The BBL Trophy is something PJ will rise to as well, so I expect to see them strive for some silverware. Plus the fan base down there is epic.” The fans will hopefully not have to wait too long for the Patriots third win on the bounce, as Friday’s visit from the Surrey Scorchers could prove to be a very winnable game. The Scorchers are currently only two points above the Patriots and were unceremoniously kicked out of the BBL Trophy at the hands of the Derby Trailblazers, a lowly NBL Division One club, who relished their opportunity to cause the biggest upset of the tournament so far. The Plymouth City Patriots, with what could be a sold out crowd at Pavilions, will be in high spirits and hungry to move ahead of the Scorchers in the race for the eighth spot and the BBL Playoffs.

GRAPHIC DESIGN CREATIVE HERO How do you choose the right people to create your brand, conceive your next ad campaign, or design packaging for your new product? There are numerous agencies and freelancers in the Plymouth area alone, many producing strong creative work. Clearly, you need to check their portfolios and fees. But, crucially, you also need to know how they work and why they design the way they do. Great design is as much about function, as it is about being beautiful. My approach is to understand your plans, assess the challenges you may face, and find effective solutions to realise your goals. Whatever the job, I aim to produce design that increases recognition in your target audience, tells your story and prompts customers to choose you over your competition. Just speak to my clients and see what they have to say.
