WELCOME
Unique setting for national event WE are incredibly proud to be hosting the Armed Forces Day National Event during what is such a special year for the United Kingdom.
With a long naval and military history and strong links with its service community, Plymouth has supported Armed Forces Day since its launch, and is honoured to stage this year’s national celebrations. We owe a great deal to the men and women who serve our Queen and country, both at home and overseas. This is a chance to pay tribute to their immense courage, their dedication, and the enormous sacrifices they make for each and every one of us. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge the support provided by their families and friends, as well as the many agencies and charities that work alongside our armed forces communities. Our breathtaking waterfront makes Plymouth the perfect venue for this prestigious event – one of the highlights in what promises to be another fantastic summer, with the Plymouth Harbour Weekend, coverage of Wimble-

don and London 2012 on the Big Screen, the “World at Your Feet” Cultural Olympiad event, Music of the Night – and much more. Last year we welcomed well over 100,000 visitors for the nine-day America’s Cup World Series and, just last month, tens of thousands packed the Hoe to witness the arrival of the Olympic Flame in the city, in front of global television audiences. Hosting such world-class events is fast positioning Plymouth as a major European destination and demonstrates the strength of partnership working here in the city. We have worked closely with all our partners to put on a spectacular Armed Forces Day, with a packed programme of family activities and entertainment. It is the culmination of a week of activities held in Plymouth each year to raise awareness of the local service community and its contribution, as well as to forge closer links between the armed forces and younger people. Visitors will get to meet serving members of the forces and veterans, see military aircraft and vehicles up close, and enjoy some stunning land, sea and air displays, followed by fantastic live entertainment which will continue into the evening on the Barbican. We look forward to welcoming serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and their families to our historic waterfront on Saturday, and to staging a national celebration to remember. SCHOOLS The Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force and reserve services support Plymouth’s young people in many ways, through the development of curriculum projects and linking in with social and emotional aspects of learning. Plymouth Armed Forces Week sees the culmination of this support, with visits to and from military bases in and around the city. Thousands of young people will take in the event, including the service children’s support network Her Majesty’s School Heroes (HMS Heroes). Members of the group will play a key role throughout the week, helping to promote the armed forces and raising the profile of The Royal British Legion, to whom they are affiliated. On Wednesday, June 27 they will joined by Heroes from across the country in dedicating a new national HMS Heroes standard at the Minster Church of St Andrew. ARMED FORCES DAY – SATURDAY, 30 JUNE
THE ARMED FORCES DAY PARADE One of the highlights of the day, the Armed Forces Day Parade will begin at 11.15am at the Royal Citadel with over 1,000 people taking part. The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines will lead the parade, followed by around 180 personnel from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force. The Central Band of the Royal Air Force will lead the ex-Service Association Standards, veterans and cadets. To mark the 30th anniversary of the South Atlantic Campaign the Standards and Veterans of the South Atlantic Medal Association (SAMA) will head the veterans, followed by the Standards of the Royal British Legion, the ex-Services Associations Standards, the Merchant Navy, veterans from across the UK, and around 120 cadets. The parade will arrive on the Hoe from Elliot Street, where disabled veterans and those of advanced years will join for the final part of the parade along the Hoe Promenade. HRH the Earl of Wessex will take the salute from the dais in front of the Naval War Memorial before the parade moves to the east end of the Hoe for a Drumhead Service. THE DRUMHEAD SERVICE A Drumhead Service is a church service conducted “in the field” during armed conflict, often near the battlefront. With no church to attend, the military command used its drums, piled neatly and draped with appropriate colours, to create an altar. The Drumhead Service on the Hoe will begin at 11.45am, with the Right Reverend John Ford, Bishop of Plymouth, and the Reverend Jonathan Woodhouse QHC, Chaplain-General to Her Majesty’s Land Forces, officiating. THE STEAMPAST At 2pm the Type 23 frigate HMS Argyll and the support tanker RFA Mounts Bay will conduct a steampast of Plymouth. The warship and Royal Fleet Auxiliary will be in line behind, with HMS Argyll firing a 21-gun salute. This will be returned by the men and guns of 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery. The 21-gun salute will be in honour of the presence of The Earl of Wessex. THE RED ARROWS The Red Arrows have represented the UK and the RAF since 1965 and have flown more than 4,300 displays in 54 countries worldwide. Their performance on Armed Forces Day will involve a traditional format of synchronised aero-

batics during the first half of the display as a sevenaircraft formation, followed by a second half featuring the “Synchro Pair” performing the traditional opposition manoeuvres for which they have become renowned. LIVE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT The live music will begin at 2.15pm with a performance by the Salamanca Band and Bugles of the Rifles. They will be performing as Soul Force, a rhythm and blues combo wowing the crowds with a toe-tapping popular repertoire including Soul Man, Shake your Tail Feather and Mustang Sally. The band is an integral part of 6th Battalion The Rifles – the South West’s only Territorial Army battalion – based at Wyvern Barracks, Exeter, and is very much sought after for performances all over the world. At 3pm the Military Wives Choir will take to the stage. Formed by Gareth Malone in 2009, the choir brought wives of men serving in Afghanistan together to help each other through a difficult time through music and singing. The choir has experienced phenomenal success, with a string of high-profile public performances and a Number One debut single, Wherever You Are, which raised well over half a million pounds for the Royal British Legion and SSAFA Forces Help. They will be performing on Armed Forces Day with the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. The Military Wives will be followed by Music of the Night, a magical mix of military pomp, song and dance performed by local amateur performers of all ages and the professional musicians of the Royal Artillery and the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. This is one of your last chances to enjoy Music of the Night before the showcase bids a fond farewell and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Commando gunners at the Royal Citadel, from July 16 to 20. Headlining the daytime entertainment will be One Step Behind – The Masters of Madness, the UK’s premier Madness tribute band. Each member of the band strives to be just like his original counterpart, both musically and in appearance – and, just like Madness, the band is renowned for its on-stage antics. One Step Behind will perform all the band’s biggest hits, creating a truly authentic “nutty” atmosphere. EVENING ENTERTAINMENT ON THE BARBICAN Following a day packed full of celebrations on the Hoe, the Armed Forces Day National Event con-
tinues with an evening of entertainment in the dazzling harbour setting of the Barbican. Between 6pm and 8pm the bustling Barbican Parade quayside will be filled with live music and street entertainment for all the family, with headline act Freshly Squeezed on stage from 7pm. With a host of welcoming restaurants and bars, the Barbican provides a truly atmospheric backdrop for catching up with old friends and sharing a delicious meal.
Armed forces personnel are invited to make the most of this celebratory evening by enjoying a host of special offers available from Barbican businesses. For more information on these offers, pop into the Tourist Information Centre on the Barbican, look out for posters in participating pubs, restaurants and shops, or visit the website www.visitplymouth.co.uk

International’s executive board said: “We are very proud to sponsor the 2012 Armed Forces Day National Event in Plymouth. ‘Community Covenant’, pledging to form stronger links with each other to benefit the thousands of service families, children and veterans in the city. The covenant will be a formal commitment to mutual support between the civilian and armed forces communities in Plymouth. At its heart is a shared understanding that servicemen and women, veterans and their families, particularly children, will receive all the support available to them from the public and voluntary sectors so that they can contribute fully to local life and benefit from all that Plymouth has to offer. HER MAJESTY’S SCHOOLS HEROES HMS Heroes is a unique, groundbreaking support group made up of children and young people who have parents or carers in the armed forces.
Formed in Plymouth in 2010, it is leading the way in providing practical help and advice to service families, and now includes more than 2,500 children from all over the country. Members of HMS Heroes meet regularly to discuss current issues affecting service children and identify their needs. They are young ambassadors and advocates for forces families, and promote dialogue between different generations. They also hold events for veterans and raise money for service charities. Most importantly, HMS Heroes are friends for each other, especially in times of need. HMS Heroes is co-ordinated by Plymouth City Council and supported by the Royal British Legion (Devon).

Armed Forces Week is just one part of a whole host of summer events in Plymouth...
Explosive action and events Voices of the South Atlantic July 14 - August 24, Peninsula Arts Timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Falklands/ Malvinas war, this exhibition examines issues of war and its consequences. Rooted in the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas conflict, the exhibition features the voices of people who fought on both sides, as well as civilians who were directly affected. Through juxtaposing photographs of scarred landscapes with testimonies from British and Argentine veterans and Falkland Islanders, a dialogue is established between the time needed for the terrain to heal and the period the men themselves need to recover. The exhibition in the Peninsula Arts gallery features portraits of Argentinian and British soldiers, who through an act of reparation and reconciliation have hand-sewn the portraits together. These highly symbolic portraits have never been shown in the UK before. The exhibition is a partnership project between Peninsula Arts, Autograph ABP, Photofusion and Ffotogallery. Harbour Weekend - Friday 27-Sunday 29 July A wonderful waterfront weekend comprising the Barbican Jazz and Blues Festival, the Sutton Harbour Classic Boat Rally and the Port of Plymouth Regatta. British Firework Championships 2012 – Tuesday 14-Wednesday 15 August The British Firework Championships is one of the highlights of Plymouth’s events calendar, having been held here every year since 1997, drawing crowds from all over the UK and beyond. A dazzling two-night spectacle will be held over the stunning natural harbour of Plymouth Sound as the country’s best pyrotechnicians battle it out for the national title. This year will also see the previous six years’ winners competing to be crowned Champion of Champions. The best place to see the spectacular displays is from the Hoe – bring a picnic and a blanket and make the most of one of the city’s favourite events. Flavour Fest – Friday 17-Sunday 19 August The South West’s biggest food festival returns for the ninth year, taking over the city centre for three days of the foodie fun, and drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to Plymouth. The city centre will become home to more than 100 food and drink stalls, with mouthwatering sights and smells at every turn. From Devonshire cheeses to Cornish curries, the Westcountry’s rich larder will be well represented among the traders. Castles Kitchens will be providing the kitchen theatre stage for Devon and Cornwall’s top chefs to show off their skills in the cookery demonstrations, whipping up some fantastic dishes for hungry onlookers to sample. The Food is Fun pavilion for children and Drinks Revolution marquee will be returning, so there’s something for everyone. For more information, visit www.shopplymouth.co.uk
