clubs/BARS One thing you won’t be short of in Plymouth is watering holes. The city is well known for its student culture and many and varied pubs, clubs and drinking venues. Whether you like a quiet drink, a pub crawl or a cheap and cheerful night on the tiles, Plymouth has something to tickle your fancy. The historic Barbican is rammed with pubs, clubs and bars within walking distance of the city centre. You could try the Cider Press, The Navy or Black Jacks for DJs, live music and karaoke or Lavish, Annabels and H20 for dancing. B-Bar is great for drinks and noodles, with the odd comedy night thrown in. North Hill (often considered student central), Drake’s Circus junction and Mutley Plain are great places to start (or end) a hard nights fun (and also have clubs, bars and pubs that cater to your limited student budget). Why not try the roundabout – great for two for ones on booze and food, Cuba, Bang Bang and Mousetrap for late night dance or Carpe Diem and The Treasury for cocktails or there are plenty of ‘ordinary’ boozers like The Skiving Scholar that are friendly student bars.

Or you could venture into the city centre and the infamous Union Street. Try Revolution, Walkabout and Varsity for dancing and drinks or Jesters, The Clipper and Two Trees for cheap and cheerful. Flares is great for cheesing out to dance tunes old and new or if you want something more cutting edge why not try the White Rabbit at Bretonside – a firm favourite with fans of the alternative scene.

Bastille | Frank Turner | Chase & Status The Lumineers | Bowling for Soup Russell Brand | Sean Lock and much more!

For that after party wind down you could try The Caffeine Club or Goodbody’s. Both offer 24 hours slap ups, coffees and shakes - good defences against potential (and obligatory) hangovers.

Don’t think that Plymouth has got what it takes to satisfy your need for all things culture? Think again. Plymouth has amongst the richest and most diverse cultural offerings in the South West – if not the country. Whether it’s experimental art and theatre, comedy, film or music that floats your boat, Plymouth’s scene is thriving, pushing boundaries and serves up hefty slices of culture - satisfying your most arty fartsy student cravings.

and films from a range of famous and not so famous worldwide contributors including art students and well renowned artists past and present. You can be sure of diversity in mediums – with everything from innovative film, theatre and music to contemporary and challenging performance, talks and gallery art. For more mainstream entertainment how about the Plymouth Pavilions and the Theatre Royal? Both venues house regular top notch shows from Swan Lake and The Lion King to drama like War Horse. You could be catching comedy from household names like Michael McIntyre or headlining music acts like chase and status and bastille and just about everything in between. Check out www.theatreroyal.com and www.plymouthpavilions.com for listings and concession details.

For film, art and food all under one roof, why not try Plymouths Arts Centre? Here you could be watching a mainstream film one week and getting hands on with the art the next - contemporary and cutting edge mixes with traditional, plus they serve great food at reasonable prices. If it isn’t already, live music is likely to be right at the heart of your student experience. It is estimated that Plymouth has 52,000 students, so it’s no surprise that the city is a hot bed of quality gigging. Whether you are into indie, punk, rockabilly, heavy metal, underground dance, hip hop or dub step or even if you like to cheese out to retro dance tunes and karaoke there is a venue for you.

traditional rock how about The Junction or The Fortescue on Mutley Plain. cheesy tunes your thing? sample Flares and Union Rooms for a mix of old and new. chart music and a dance fix can be found at Revolutions, oceana or Varsity which are all around Union Street or why not try Lavish or H20 situated amongst the many bars on the barbican.

If you like your music independent and alternative you could try The White Rabbit on Bretonside, The Voodoo Lounge or swing down to tikki bar for an interEsting mix of food, cocktails and punk rock/ rockabilly. for

There are also a number of quality independent record shops dotted around Plymouth, for those of you who like your music on vinyl – some that offer quality live gigs like The Last Shop Standing – along with music shops like

Hartnoll’s Guitar Shop and vibes where you can restring your axe, find out who’s building a band or maybe pick up tickets for the hottest gigs in town.

STUDENT LIFE

Of course there is always your student union. Normally a hot bed of sizzling gigs – from disco to one man bands and dubious legends like The Wurzels who played at one campus last year and totally brought the house down, right through to comedy and karaoke. The Student Union should be you first port of call if you want to explore music in Plymouth. they probably offer a good gig guide and have their ear to the ground for the less publicised gigs and word of mouth venues that slip under the radar.

If it’s your first year at university then you may have already sorted out your living arrangements. If not then here are some tips to bear in mind from the Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA).

going italone 1. Research, research, research Before searching for a property, speak to other students or check university advice websites for first-hand experiences of renting in the area. Many student unions offer free housing or legal advice and contract checking services, so find out what services are available to help you. 2. Rent with the experts As there are no restrictions on who becomes a landlord there are, unfortunately, some unscrupulous landlords who may not have a tenant’s best interests at heart. For peace of mind, seek advice from a lettings agent affiliated to a professional organisation like ARLA which adhere to a strict code of conduct. 3. Don’t ignore the smallprint Find out what kind of tenancy agreement you are signing, as this can make a difference to your liability. Many shared tenancies will have a joint and several liability clause and this means you are responsible for the actions of your co-tenants for the terms of the tenancy, not just the payment of rent. Before you enter such an agreement consider how well you know your sharers. Make a note of the notice period – even if your landlord knows you are a student, you will have to give adequate notice (usually a month) at the end of term when you want to move out. Failing to do so may mean that you have to pay rent after you’ve moved out. If you are planning to rent a property with other tenants, it is imperative to ensure that the landlord has the relevant Homes in Multiple Occupancy (HMO) licence, as this is a legal requirement which can differ

in certain parts of the country and within areas of a town or city. Finally, check your deposit it is being put into a deposit protection scheme by the landlord – this is a legal requirement in England and Wales. 4. Be aware of ‘hidden’ costs When working out your budget it is important to factor in costs on top of the weekly or monthly rental rate. The deposit can often represent significant initial outlay and is typically the equivalent of six weeks’ rent. And utilities bills, TV license and internet access will all need to be factored in, even if you are sharing the cost with other tenants. If you are a student living only with other students, you will usually be exempt from paying council tax. 5. Insurance and Inventories Often, while you are a student, your personal property will be covered by your parents’ contents insurance, but it is important to check the specific policy wording. If you aren’t covered, there are a number of insurance providers which offer student-specific policies. Always ensure you fill out a comprehensive inventory listing the fixtures and fittings within the property, detailing their condition and that of the property itself. It is also advisable to take a thorough photographic record of the property’s condition at the start of the tenancy. Any photos should be jointly approved by the landlord and tenants, and separate copies should be retained by both parties. A well put-together inventory provides useful evidence to protect both the landlord and tenant in the event of a dispute.

Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm to alert you if you’re in danger – you can buy a battery operated one at any DIY store and take it with you to every student property you live in. may include pain when you urinate, unusual discharge and, in women, bleeding between periods or after sex. GENITAL WARTS Genital warts are small fleshy growths, bumps or skin changes that appear on or around your genital or anal area. They are the result of a viral skin infection caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). You don’t need to have penetrative sex to pass the infection on because HPV is spread by skin-to-skin contact. GONORRHOEA Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection that can cause an unusual discharge from your vagina or penis, and pain when urinating. Gonorrhoea can be easily diagnosed

sexualHEALING Although STIs are on the rise in Plymouth, Debbie Stark, director of public health in the city, insists that’s not necessarily a negative thing. She explained: “The number of under 25s being screened for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has risen. This is not necessarily due to more people having unprotected sex but more to do with more people coming forward for screening. “Prevention is always better than cure and we will continue to educate young people how to practice safe sex and the risks associated with not using a condom; whether that’s contracting an STI or becoming pregnant. “It is very important we encourage young people to get screened if they suspect they may have contracted an infection. The city has an accessible young people’s sexual health service at the Zone and a comprehensive service at the GUM department at Derriford Hospital. Some GPs are also commissioned to provide sexual health services.” CHLAMYDIA Chlamydia is one of the most common STIs in the UK. Most people who have chlamydia don’t notice any symptoms and won’t know they have the infection. Otherwise, symptoms

through a simple swab test and treated with antibiotics. If left untreated, it can lead to more serious long-term health problems and infertility. SYPHILIS Syphilis is a bacterial infection that causes a painless but highly infectious sore on your genitals or sometimes around the mouth. The sore lasts two to six weeks before disappearing. Secondary symptoms, such as a skin rash and sore throat, then develop. If it is left to progress untreated, syphilis can go on to cause serious conditions such as stroke, paralysis, blindness or death. HIV HIV is a virus most commonly caught by having unprotected sex or sharing infected needles to inject drugs. The virus weakens your ability to fight infections and cancer. AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection, when your body can no longer fight life-threatening infections. There’s no cure for HIV but there are treatments to enable most people with the virus
