How Does Hypnosis work? One of the first things you learn as a Hypnotherapist is to recognise the physical effects of trance: reduced heart rate, slower breathing and change in pallor of the client.

W

e are taught that hypnosis is a natural state of ‘internal reflection’, where the conscious mind is put to one side so that we can talk directly to the subconscious and that we can have incredible access to memories; recalling them vividly and applying a new understanding to them. What they could never really tell us was how it works; but now, with the latest medical neuro-imaging tools, scientists are exploring what is actually happening in the brain during hypnosis.

Using MRI, PET, EEG & CT scans researchers are beginning to show, not only that hypnosis is a particular state, different to sleep, relaxation and even meditation, but also how it might be working. Firstly, during hypnosis, changes in blood flow to different regions of the brain produces a huge increase in ‘Theta’ brainwave activity. This level of brainwaves shows that the brain has calmed to a level below that of meditation (Alpha) and just above that of sleep (Delta), it produces a state of drowsiness and reduced consciousness

and loss of inhibition and increases the production of the hormones which are required for memory and learning and that ‘feel good’ factor. PET scans confirm the involvement of the brains visual processing area (ACC), the thalamus (involved in sensation and movement), and part of the brainstem that regulates sensory information (autonomic systems, reflex movement, sleep & arousal) in the production of hypnotic states. Increases in mental absorption during hypnosis were associated with increases in blood flow in a distributed network often described as the brain’s ‘attentional system’. Using MRI scans researchers at Cornell University, New York, have found that there is decreased activity in certain areas of the brain. One of those areas is involved in the mental processes of perception, memory, judgment, and reasoning. This area also seems to be normally active in handling conflicting ideas. Reducing the activity of this area of the brain reduces the logical, conscious, decision making processes and explains the high suggestibility of hypnotised subjects. Another study, by Penn State Psychology Professor, William Ray, using EEG,

08 March 2015

Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007

suggests that hypnosis can remove the emotional connection to pain whilst still allowing for the sensory experience – you can feel the touch but there is no pain associated with it. He also says that those areas of the brain involved in making decisions and monitoring the environment ‘show strong connections suggesting that, under hypnosis, the person is able to focus on what they are doing without asking why they are doing it or checking the environment for changes’. There are more exciting studies showing how the brain behaves differently in hypnosis, such as firing areas related to actual movement when it is being visualised and connecting areas of the brain which are not usually working together. Even if you don’t understand all the science, the point I’m making here is HYPNOSIS IS REAL AND IT WORKS. It is a different state that has interesting effects on the activity of the brain, altering the way it processes information thereby altering the way you think. Barbra Burgess. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

EXCLUSIV

E INTERVI

EW WITH

Rebecca Ferguson Interview by Myles Lockwood

Glamorous singer Rebecca Ferguson has become one of the biggest selling soul artists of our decade and performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the UK. Compared to the likes of Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfeild, she has had 1 million sales of her debut album. Director of Oracle Magazine, Myles Lockwood, caught up with Rebecca to talk about her upcoming album, cover of Billie Holiday’s famous record, “Lady Sings the Blues” So let's kick off with your new album "Lady Sings the Blues". Tell us how you became inspired to make this album and what is it all about? I studied Billie Holiday when I was at school, and the events that took place in her life have always touched and moved me. Especially how much pain she went through and how she used her voice to get through that period. So I've always been inspired by her life and her music. But when I was approached by my manager with the idea it was an easy decision for me to make, as I've always loved Billie Holiday. This is your 3rd album release in your career. When is the release date and will there be any show performances to

10 March 2015

accompany the release? The album will be released on March the 9th and there will be shows at St. James Theatre in London. I'm really excited because I will be performing in a room with a real Jazz Style feel to it, so it will be a very up close and personal atmosphere. The performances will be on the 19th, 20th, and 21st March. More shows are also planned throughout the year. There are many famous songs on the album, but do you have any favourites? Oh my, I've got lots of favourites but if I have to choose a couple "Get Happy" and “Blue Moon” would be at the top of my list. I love performing them and they have always been favourites of mine.

Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007

You've had remarkable highs in your career so far, including 1 million sales of your debut album “Heaven”. You've also been compared to the likes of Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone and Dusty Springfield. How do you feel when you’re compared to some of the most iconic singers of our time? Oh wow! It's so crazy when you say that, I just don't think of myself as anything special, certainly not compared to such legends. Of course I'm flattered, it's amazing that people have compared me to such incredible performers but I just don't think of myself like that, I'm just me (she laughs). You recorded the album at the famed

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW “Capitol Studios” in Los Angeles, with producer Troy Miller. What was it like working with Troy? Troy was amazing to work with; I didn’t realise how brilliant and educated he was! We originally started on the songs on a piano and worked on them together every day until we were ready for the studio. Based on the original Billie Holiday 1952 classic “Lady sings the Blues”, how close is your version to Billie’s? I didn’t want this album to be a cover of Billie or me trying to imitate Billie, so I wanted to learn the songs. I then interpreted them in my own way, and then put my own stamp on it which makes the songs current for people listening today. Let’s go back 5 years to where it all started at the X Factor. What was the turning point that pushed you to go for an audition? I’d tried lots of times before to get onto the Xfactor at the auditions but had never got anywhere. But this time when I received an email from them asking if I wanted to try out again at the auditions, I almost didn’t go! But I thought... why not, I’ll just go for it, and I went along. I guess it was a decision that changed your life, a bit like a sliding doors situation? Yes it really was! (she laughs).

“I was approached by my manager with the idea and as I’ve always loved Billie it was an easy decision for me to make” When you sang on your first X Factor stage audition “Change is Gonna Come”, it must have felt overwhelming singing live in front of so many people. How did you manage your nerves? Oh God, I was so nervous, especially performing in front of Simon Cowell. I just tried to lose myself in the music and not think about it. It certainly was difficult, because at that point I had lost all my confidence from the previous knock backs. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but I’m really glad I did it.

amazing experience and all the judges were so lovely. What’s it like working with Simon Cowell? Simon is exactly like he is on TV. How he acts, the things that he says, the way he dresses, he’s just like that. With him, what you see is what you get. Cheryl was your mentor at the time, do you still keep in touch? I haven’t seen Cheryl since I went back on the X Factor to perform. We have both been so busy with our own projects but she did tweet me Good Luck with the baby which was nice. I see Louis sometimes, I love Louis. Which artists inspire you the most and who do you enjoy listening to?

Looking back, what was the whole X Factor experience like for you?

I’ve just downloaded Nina Simone’s album which I’m loving. Funny enough, I was just listening to it before this interview (she laughs)! I also like listening to a bit of dance music too.

A whirlwind (she laughs)! It was an

You’ve been singing from a young age,

Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts

what age did it all start for you? I started singing when I was in school, I can’t remember the age but I’ve always sang since I can remember. Did you start writing songs from a young age? Yes I’ve been writing songs since I was a little girl. I’ve always preferred to write and perform my own songs. Billie Holiday had her fair share of turmoil in her life and there has been lots of ups and downs for you as well. Has there ever been a point where you thought I can’t do this anymore? When you have sung and performed in front of lots of people its hard to give that up. Plus I’ve got lots of loved ones, family and friends that love to see me perform and I just couldn’t ever stop doing that for them. If you could give one piece of advice for anyone wanting to start a music career what would it be? Be yourself, never change who you are and sing from your Heart and Soul, but most importantly, just go for it!

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Prom’s the word at Amical Bridal Boutique Rails of beautiful dresses sparkle and shine as we enter Amica Bridal Boutique at Marsh Mills, Plymouth. Their stunning showroom and fabulous collection of gowns has meant Amica has quickly established itself as the place to go to for bridal wear; but it’s not only about wedding dresses at this time of year! As school proms grow in popularity, so does the choice of the prom dresses. At Amica Bridal Boutique girls are spoilt for choice as they browse the many striking dresses, in different colours, fabrics and styles. The owners, Amanda Atwill and Amy Bellamy launched Amica Bridal Boutique 18 months ago and grew their prom collection to meet customer requests. Their clients are able to try on many different styles – from mermaid to floaty, short, fitted, sophisticated or princess style…their catalogue is simply stunning. ‘We’re so proud of our prom collection and the excellent reputation we’re building’, explains Amanda. ‘We have a fantastic supplier, ‘Ruby Prom’ who works with us to supply dresses

that our customers want, to suit all tastes, and budgets too! ‘The customer feedback we’re receiving is tremendous.’ ‘Everyone in our team understands the importance of prom to the girls’ added Amy. ‘It’s a special time for them and searching for their dream prom dress is all part of the experience. ‘As soon as the girls reach Year 11 their focus is on GCSEs, first and foremost, but they love the celebration of prom to conclude one of their toughest school years.’

“For many, this is their first formal occasion, and for the girls, it’s all about ‘the dress’.” One of Amica’s Bridal and Prom consultants, Chloe Wooding, attended her own school prom last year and as a result is able to give advice that is current and on a level with the clients. Now studying fashion at college, Chloe is able to work with the prom girls to help them find a style of dress that suits their figure and taste. ‘I really enjoy assisting the prom girls’ said Chloe. ‘When a girl walks out of the fitting room wearing her dream dress, you see her gain

confidence, posture and a huge smile – and the best bit – mum, and even dad with a tear in their eye as they see their daughter look so stunning!’ Proms have increased substantially over the last ten years. Prior to the millennium, schools traditionally provided a dance, or party for their leavers. With the American influence, nearly every secondary school in Devon now provides a more lavish end of school ‘prom’ for their Year 11s and 13s – and why not? For many, this is their first formal occasion, and for the girls, it’s all about ‘the dress’. Avoiding that awkward moment - at Amica Bridal Boutique a register is kept so that no one wears the same colour dress to their school prom. With a strong team of experienced seamstresses on site, they’re also able to make adjustments to dresses and use fabric from the dresses to make a matching tie or pocket square for the girls’ prom date. Amica Bridal Boutique is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm, Sunday 11am-3pm, and offer late night appointments until 7pm on Wednesdays.

LEISURE

YOUNG PLYMOUTH EXPLORERS EMBARK ON ANARCTIC ADVENTURE

L

earning in -5°c in the footsteps of Captain Scott. This month, a group of ten plucky 10 Year olds from Plymouth will be setting off on the trip of a lifetime. They will be heading to Lapland, Finland’s northernmost province, famous for its breath-taking landscape, Aurora Borealis and of course, Lapland’s local resident, Santa Claus himself.

With temperatures in Winter reaching -15°c, the excited children from a number of schools across the city will be busy packing their thermals, mitts and woolly hats, ready to leave their parents, in some cases for the first time in their lives. Having been selected from over 900 entrants to this year’s competition, all of the finalists have exhibited a number of characteristics that the project aims to encourage and enhance within Plymouth’s future generations. The 900 entrants were whittled down to 21 finalists, who were invited to a challenging assessment day at the Devonport Guildhall in January. This event, supported by Oliver Colvile MP and Alison Seabeck MP, saw the children engaged in a variety of problem solving activities and mental challenges, which enabled the team to decide on who would travel to Finland and who would act as the support group based in Plymouth.

Organised by the Plymouth Association of Primary Heads, the 8 day expedition is this year run in partnership with ETE and its founder, Polar Explorer Antony Jinman. 16 March 2015

Plymouth born, Antony is the 12th Britain to reach the Geographic North and South Poles. Partnering Antony, will be Paul Hart, a former Royal Navy Officer who is now Adventure Writer for the Telegraph. Paul led the first British crossing of the Antarctic Peninsula by man-haul in 2012 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott reaching the South Pole. As experienced Explorers, they will be leading the expedition, supported by two Plymouth teachers; Jeff Eastbrook from Manadon Vale Primary School and Annabelle Babcock from Riverside Community Primary School, who were themselves interviewed for their place on the trip.

in some of the more deprived areas. If Plymouth is to flourish, it is essential we address this inequality. The competition was designed to engage the children and encourage them to show aspiration, curiosity, courage and compassion. These qualities were clearly evidenced in their work posted on www. thespiritofdiscovery.com.

The project aims to broaden horizons and help develop an inquisitive mind. It provides an amazing opportunity to the children, who come from a range of backgrounds.

The work fell into three categories; ‘Creative Me,’ ‘Thinking Me’ and ‘Physical Me.’ With the children’s parents and communities being asked to support the project, it is obvious that the reach of this project is far greater than just the children involved. The expedition will be broadcast to the Plymouth primary schools so that they can share the experience with our 10 young Plymouth Ambassadors through Live Learning.

A recent report drawn up by The Plymouth Fairness Commission in 2014 reveals some compelling figures. Describing Plymouth as ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ it highlights that whilst there is action to regenerate buildings and places, there is a desperate need to pay attention to the regeneration of the people of Plymouth too. The report confirmed that nearly one in four of the children in Plymouth live in poverty, with that figure rising to over 50%

The group will be staying at the Vasatokka Youth Centre, which is picturesquely situated on the edge of Lake Muddusjärvi, in the village of Riutula, just a short distance away from Inari village. The environment is characterised by Arctic nature and three Lappish cultures: Inari Sami, North Sami and Skolt Sami. The centre specialises in expeditions for children, providing a safe and nurturing environment for

LEISURE young people to experience, learn and have adventures that encourage personal growth. The trip is packed full of Arctic activities, giving the children the opportunity to experience the Sámi culture, learn some Sámi phrases and words as well as trying on some of the traditional clothing. They will tackle a snowshoe trip up on Tuulispää Fell, learn about reindeer herding and the importance of reindeer within the Sámi culture, take a husky sleigh ride through snow covered forests and even stop for a spot of ice fishing. “In 2020, the city of Plymouth will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the historic voyage that the Pilgrim Fathers embarked on in 1620” The Mayflower left Plymouth in England and arrived 56 days later in Cape Cod on the US East coast, marking one of the most enduring alliances the world has ever known. Had an accident you know nothing about? I

had a text this week saying there is £4,865.00 still waiting in my name for an accident I had. Strange, because I can’t remember having had an accident and I’m pretty observant about these things. I am tempted to fill out the form in the text to find out what my injuries are but I won’t, because this is clearly a nuisance text. Thousands of these messages are sent every day by unscrupulous claims management companies in the hope that someone receiving one will have had an accident and will respond. Please can I set the record straight? Solicitors do not send these texts or make cold calls: we are banned from doing so under the rules governing our practice. There is a public misconception about Personal Injury, thanks to these irritating text messages, and this fuels a misunderstanding about who can claim and how to claim. There is also some confusion at the moment relating to road traffic accidents. Insurance companies can lead you to believe that you have to use their panel solicitors. This is not the case. You should be made aware that you have the right to choose your own legal representative. Also, the insurer might have a link to the lawyers they are recommending and this should be pointed out to you.

There are many ways to access Personal Injury advice these days. You could call one of the TV advertised helplines, fill in an enquiry form on one of the many claims company websites or even reply to one of the text messages. However, what a lot of people do not realise is that you can just pick up the telephone and call your local firm of solicitors.

At Chris Kallis Solicitors, we want you to know that you can contact us direct if you’ve had an accident. If someone has been negligent and you’ve been injured, we can help you.

At Chris Kallis Solicitors, if you call us you can speak directly to a highly qualified specialist Personal Injury solicitor right away. We are entirely independent and act only on the best interest of our clients. We won’t charge you to give you our initial advice on your claim.

“At Chris Kallis Solicitors, we want you to know that you can contact us direct if you’ve had an accident. If someone has been negligent and you’ve been injured, we can help you.” As a dedicated Personal Injury solicitor, I am just as annoyed by the ambulance chasing tactics of these high pressure sales companies as you are. They are a blight on the good and valuable work that we do for clients who really need our help. A genuinely injured person, especially if seriously injured, often has no option but to make a claim, in order to put their life back on track and there is no shame in doing so.

It might seem a bit old fashioned, but actually it’s still the most direct way to seek advice. It makes sense to know who is dealing with your case. You can even pop into our office and speak to us about it, if you’d rather see us faceto-face over a cup of tea.

LEISURE

“Mothers...even when they’re wrong, they’re right!” By Nimra Imran

Bonne Fete des Meres. Gelukkige moederdag. Feliz Dia Maes. Happy Mother’s Day. It does not matter how we say it, the sentiment and the meaning is just the same. Thank you mum, for being the superhero who never got enough credit for defeating villains like laundry, school lunches and endless homework hours. With Mother’s Day knocking on our doors on the 15th of March, take a look at the unique traditions different cultures have and incorporate them into your Mother’s Day celebrations! 20 March 2015

All across the globe, mothers are showered with handmade gifts and burnttoast breakfasts in bed, as we celebrate a day dedicated to these angels with frizzy hair, school bags in one hand and broken crayons in the other. So now its time to show them just how much we appreciate them! So if you’re struggling to come up with a spectacular way to spend mother’s day, or if you want to avoid a kitchen in shambles after failed attempts at pancakes, have a look at the many wonderful ways mother’s day is celebrated in different cultures for some inspiration. In the UK Mother’s Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of lent, also commonly known as Mothering Sunday. Medieval times saw many poor families sending their sons and daughters to work as domestic servants or apprentices in rich households. Therefore, every year, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, children would be given the day off in order to visit their families. On their way home, the children would often pick flowers to give to their mothers

and bake Mothering Cakes, or Simnel cakes. The holiday also used to be known as ‘Refreshment Sunday’, as the strict lent fasting rules were put aside for one day. Today Mother’s Day is celebrated in the same manner as in America, with flowers, cards, gifts and half-cooked pancakes cut into heart shapes. Mother’s Day is the most commercial holiday celebrated in Brazil, second only to Christmas. Church gatherings, special performances put on by children and large multi-generation barbecues see Mother’s day celebrated in every household. Likewise, Muttertag in Germany, is also celebrated on the second Sunday of May. The giving of Mother’s Day is extremely popular in Germany. During the World War II, Mother’s day took on a political significance as a day to acknowledge women for producing children for the Vaterland or the Father Land. Medals were awarded based upon how many children were in each household.

LEISURE It assumed a softer feel, however, after the war with the giving of gifts, cards and flowers, as well as festive meals polishing off the day. Japan is the third country where Mother’s day is also celebrated on the second Sunday of May. It is symbolised by beautiful carnations which represent the gentle strength of mothers who are revered in the Japanese culture. Children draw pictures of their mothers in school and enter art competitions. Like most other countries, Mother’s Day means a day of relaxation and pampering for mums. Kids help takeover the household chores and families take part in special meals, with the giving of gifts, red carnations or roses to say thank you. The giving of carnation is also relied upon heavily in Australia. Chrysanthemums are also a very popular choice, as mothers are called mum in Australia, while aunts and grandmothers are also acknowledged with gifts. Events to raise many for women’s causes are also held by organisations nationwide.

Peru is also no exception to this holiday, where Mother’s day is celebrated with gifts, chocolates and joyous family meals. Peruvian children also give their mothers handmade items which are reciprocated with gifts from them in return. Peru’s indigenous population, however, celebrates the gifts of mother earth, or pachamama in August.

“All across the globe, mothers are showered with handmade gifts and burnt-toast breakfasts in bed, as we celebrate a day dedicated to these angels with frizzy hair, school bags in one hand and broken crayons in the other” Pachamama is an ancient mythological goddess beloved by many indigenous Andean populations. Mythology cites Pachamama as the cause of earthquakes and bringer of fertility.

Unlike the United States and several other countries, Mother’s Day in Spain is celebrated on December 8. Spaniards pay tribute not only to their own mothers on this day, but also to the Virgin Mary. Mother’s Day in Spain includes religious celebrations across the country. As December comes this year, consider taking a moment to honor your mother on December 8. Spaniards pay tribute not only to their own mothers on this day, but also the Virgin Mary. While these celebrations may vary, the emotion and love that binds families together is uniform all over the world. Mother’s Day simply serves as a reminder of all the sacrifices mothers make for their families and give us all their love without asking for anything in return, and the utmost honour they deserve for it. So here’s to all the supermums out there, even though we still haven’t found those red capes in her closet! Mother’s Day: 15th March 2015.

ver the past two years, their mindset has been solidly focused on hard work and commitment to the firm’s loyal customers – which has even seen the team work on Christmas Day. “We are passionate about Plymouth,” says former Royal Marine, Travis. “We employ 15 people and our goal is to aid the city’s economy, manufacture items on site, and maintain a low carbon footprint.” “We also make sure that there is little waste by recycling as much as we can.” Making products and frames on site means the company can

provide a wide bespoke range for the home. These are certain to provide sparkle and added value – from energy efficient PVCu windows (in a wide range of designs and colours) through to a multiple story extension. The company’s conservatories are also manufactured in house and are designed to have a long life and also be energy efficient. The team is happy to aid with any planning issues to ensure you have minimal fuss when it is being installed. Or, if you are looking for something with a real sense of “historic grandeur,” then why not invest in an Orangery? “An Orangery incorporates not only the best of the modern world with its technology, that ensures a warm and energy efficient finish,

Or, if you don’t have quite the space for an Orangery, then the company can also fit a “skypod” into a roof area, so adding height, light and volume to your living space. Windows the natural choice for many homeowners looking for home improvements. Additionally, the company’s wide range also makes a tempting array for clients – from Sarah’s favourites, the vertical sliding window, to by-folding doors where the door will literally fold back on itself in a concertina style. By-folding doors can have a maximum span of six metres which allow for a huge area to be opened up for those all important spring rays of sunshine! Sarah, who has just had her first baby, says people are also attracted to the business because of its sense of fairness for the customer – they provide discounts for OAPs, military personnel and emergency workers. Her grandfather was a former Royal Marine and Travis’ connection with the Forces,

together with the city’s strong ties to the Royal Navy, means that both Sarah and Travis felt it important to be able to provide a discount for the military. Sarah also enjoys success as a singer whose large repertoire of music is enjoyed at various social events across the city. Her passion for singing extends into

She soon found that other members of the team also knew the song and joined in! “It really made for a warm, happy atmosphere and it is that friendly atmosphere that is what our business is all about,” says Sarah.
