HANDMADE GIFTS THIS CHRISTMAS

Instead of fighting the shopping crowds this Christmas why not get crafty by creating your own personalised presents for your loved ones.

Every year people swarm the streets stressfully searching for the perfect present for their loved ones. to remember. Visit www.hobbycraft. co.uk/.

Warm-up their winter with homemade hand heaters!

Sometimes even the woolly mittens can’t keep that winter weather from giving you frosty fingers! Get crafty and creative, a gift guaranteed to make your loved ones smile and

keep them snug with handmade hand warmers this Christmas.

You will need:

1. A needle and thread

2. Fabric

3. Scissors

4. Rice

1. Firstly you’ll need your scissors to cut two pieces of fabric into squares (a guide size is 3-4 inches square).

2. Next, you’ll need your needle and thread. Put the patterned side of the two fabric squares together and tightly stitch around three sides fully. On the forth side leave about an inch away from the edge as this will be the gap you will use to fill with rice.

3. Secure the thread with a knot and cut off any extra thread and turn the hand warmers right side out.

4. Using the hole you left on one of the edges fill the bag 3/4 full of rice. You may want to use a funnel.

5. Finally, stitch up and close the hole.

6. And there you have it, a lovely little Christmassy gift for your friends and family to enjoy. Don’t forget to add a note to say the hand warmer should be in the microwave for 15-20 seconds.

Beautiful body scrubs for your secret Santa.

Stick to a beauty budget this holiday by making your loved ones an allnatural body scrub. Honey-sugar body scrubs are so simple to make and require just three ingredients that are

probably already in your kitchen!

You will need:

1. Honey

2. Oil

3. Brown or white sugar

4. A mixing bowl

1. Firstly gently heat a jar of honey in the microwave for a couple of seconds until it becomes runny but not too hot.

2. Secondly, pour about /4 of the honey into a small mixing bowl and add 2-3 tablespoons of your favorite oil, for example, coconut oil works well.

3. Finally, add about 1/2 a cup of sugar. Mix the ingredients together until you are satisfied with the texture.

4. Place the mix into a nice jar and add a personal note. That’s it! A great gift scrubbed up in a matter of minutes!

Fashion your loved ones a festive friendship bracelet.

a Christmas Wreath

With Doris The Florist

HOW TO MAKE

STEP 1

Tie the twine securely to the wreath frame. Place a handful of moss on the frame, pull the twine over the moss and under the frame, and repeat until the frame is fully covered. Ensure no part of the frame is visible on either side.

STEP 3

STEP 2

Arrange mixed foliage at a slant on the moss wreath, overlapping slightly as you go around. Secure cones, whole oranges, and cinnamon sticks by wrapping twine around each item to grip, adding them while working around the wreath. Once finished, tuck and secure the twine firmly around a wire edge.

Now you can add the extra accessories of your choice. For a natural wreath the embellishments orange slices, cinnamon sticks, apple slices secure with picks. Flowers can also be added for interest and appearance.

STEP 4

A Hessian bow has been attached to the wreath to complete the look of this natural and sustainable Christmas wreath. To create your very own bow you can watch a Doris the Florist tutorial on FB or if you prefer you can purchase a pre made bow.

STEP 5

To hang your gorgeous wreath you can purchase a hanging wreath holder for your front door or you can add a loop of ribbon or raffia around the top of your wreath and secure with a tight knot. The Gift of Giving

Christmas is an exciting time of year. Splurging on gifts you know your friends and family will love, laying out a feast for Christmas Day; it’s all just part of the festive season.

Unfortunately, not everyone counts down to the big day in earnest, as many people across the city rely on food banks to feed themselves and their families for a number of reasons. We want to spread awareness of the amazing work that the food banks undertake, and to let you know what you can do to help because after all, it is the season of giving.

Plymouth Food Bank is part of the Trussell Trust; a network of 428 food banks across the UK, working to tackle hunger and poverty in communities. As a network, their aim is to see more people helped out of crisis and to reduce the need for food banks in the future.

Last year, Plymouth Food Bank provided 126,027 meals to people in crisis (22/23)

The Plymouth Food Bank operates out of the Oasis Project, a community hub that offers personal support and development opportunities to the people of Plymouth. They don’t just offer food- Oasis Project can help you with a prospective job interview by providing suitable clothing, and can also offer training and education through a programme of courses.

1 in 5 of the UK population live below the poverty line

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy, to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with food banks helping to prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.

Schools, churches, businesses and individuals can all donate food directly to the food bank, or through designated donation points in supermarkets around the city. Large collections also take place at fundraisers and charity events. Volunteers then sort and check that all of the food donated is non perishable and in date, and this is then packed into boxes ready to be given to people in need.

People can find themselves in crisis at any point in their lives. In order to ensure the right people are getting the appropriate help, food bank vouchers are issued by local authorities such as citizen’s advice, health visitors and children’s centres. Basic details will be taken, and depending on your circumstances you will be offered the appropriate guidance needed to support you.

As the festive season approaches, what can you do to help?

Plymouth Food Bank are in desperate need of items such as long life fruit juice, tea, biscuits, UHT milk and breakfast cereals. They have plenty of pasta and baked beans in stock at the moment so these are not a priority.

Donating items is incredibly easyyou don’t even have to buy them specifically. Take a look in you cupboards and chances are you will have suitable items that have been sat there for a while! As long as they are in date; tinned soup, tinned fruit and any other non-perishable goods can be placed in a donation point on your next weekly shop at your local supermarket.

How about after the festive season is over, guaranteed every household has

an influx of leftover items that will sit in the cupboards for another year. Put them to good use, and donate them to someone in greater need in the colder months of the new year.

The Festival Of Winter Walks 2024

As the crisp air and frost-kissed mornings of winter settle in, there’s no better time to lace up your boots, grab a thermos of something warm, and step into the breathtaking outdoors. The Festival of Winter Walks 2024 is here, celebrating the joys of winter rambling across the UK. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone who prefers a gentle stroll, this festival brings communities together to explore scenic trails, connect with nature, and rejuvenate the mind and body.

For those in Devon and the South West, you’re spoiled for choice with a rich tapestry of landscapes—from dramatic coastlines to peaceful woodlands and windswept moorlands. Before you head out, let’s explore how to prepare, what to expect, and where to go to make the most of this year’s festival.

Why WinTer WalKing?

Winter walking offers a unique and magical experience. the frosted landscapes sparkle in the low sun, the air feels fresh and invigorating, and familiar trails take on a new charm under winter’s spell. unlike the bustling summer months, walking in winter offers tranquillity, allowing you to connect more deeply with your surroundings. there’s also the simple pleasure of returning home to a crackling fire, a warm bath, or a steaming mug of hot chocolate after a bracing walk.

Beyond the physical benefits— improved fitness, better cardiovascular health, and stronger muscles—walking in nature is a tonic for mental wellbeing. Studies show that spending

time outdoors can lower stress levels, improve mood, and even enhance creativity. For families, it’s a fantastic way to disconnect from screens and spend quality time together. For solo walkers, it offers peace and introspection.

The Festival of Winter Walks amplifies these benefits, providing guided walks, local events, and community-focused initiatives to encourage everyone to embrace the season.

BeFore yoU STarT: TipS For a MeMoraBle WalK

While the idea of stepping into nature sounds idyllic, preparation is key to ensuring your walk is enjoyable, safe, and rewarding. here are some tips to get you started:

1. Dress for the Weather Winter in Devon and the South West can be unpredictable, with sudden showers or frosty winds. layering is the secret to staying warm and comfortable:

Base layer: a moisture-wicking top to keep sweat away from your skin. Middle Layer: An insulating fleece or jumper for warmth.

outer layer: a waterproof and windproof jacket to protect against the elements.

extras: Don’t forget a hat, scarf, and gloves to shield against the cold. thick, woolen socks will keep your feet warm.

2. Choose the right Footwear Sturdy, waterproof walking boots with good grip are essential for tackling muddy paths, icy trails, or rocky coastlines. if you’re walking on particularly uneven terrain, consider trekking poles for added stability.

3. pack essentials even for shorter walks, a well-packed bag can make all the difference:

• a map and compass or a reliable gpS device.

• a fully charged phone (and possibly a portable charger).

• a thermos of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate.

• high-energy snacks like granola bars, nuts, or chocolate.

• A small first-aid kit with plasters, bandages, and pain relievers.

• a torch or headlamp—winter

• days are short, and it’s wise to be prepared for early dusk.

4. Plan Your Route

Familiarise yourself with your chosen trail. Check weather conditions and trail closures before setting out. Always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return.

5. Respect Nature

The South West is home to delicate ecosystems, especially in winter when wildlife is more vulnerable. Stick to marked paths, close gates behind you, and take all litter home. Dogs are welcome on many trails but should be kept on a lead to avoid disturbing livestock or wildlife.

iN

DevoN aND the south West

With its diverse landscapes, Devon and the South West offer a treasure trove of trails perfect for winter walks. Here are some of the region’s highlights:

DaRtmooR NatioNal PaRk

Dartmoor transforms into a mystical wonderland in winter, with its rugged tors dusted with frost and mist drifting through the valleys. A standout trail is the Two Bridges to Wistman’s Wood route. This 5-mile round trip takes you through an enchanting, ancient woodland filled with gnarled, mosscovered trees. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of the moor and the chance to spot Dartmoor ponies grazing in the distance.

For those seeking a challenge, the Haytor Circular Walk is a 7-mile route offering stunning views from the iconic granite tor and a mix of open moorland and peaceful wooded areas.

south West Coast Path

The South West Coast Path is a treasure for walkers year-round, but its winter beauty is unmatched. The Salcombe to Hope Cove section is a favorite, offering a 6-mile stretch of dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and quaint fishing villages. Wrap up warm and take in the crashing waves and soaring seabirds.

For a shorter outing, try the Sidmouth to Ladram Bay walk. At just under 4 miles, it’s a manageable route showcasing the striking red cliffs of East Devon and the unique sea stacks at Ladram Bay.

the taRka tRail

Named after the famous otter from Henry Williamson’s novel, the Tarka Trail offers flat, accessible walking paths perfect for families or those looking for a leisurely stroll. The Braunton to Barnstaple section is particularly popular, following a disused railway line alongside the estuary. Winter is a fantastic time for birdwatching here, with many migratory species making a stop.

halDoN FoRest PaRk

Located just outside Exeter, Haldon Forest Park offers well-maintained trails for all abilities. The Discovery Trail is a 2.5-mile loop ideal for families, with picnic spots and interactive points of interest along the way. For a more immersive experience, the Raptor Trail (3.5 miles) takes you through the quieter parts of the forest, where you might catch a glimpse of deer or birds of prey.

exmooR NatioNal PaRk

For those seeking serenity, Exmoor’s Horner Wood Circular Walk is a must. This 4-mile route winds through a

beautiful ancient woodland along the banks of the Horner Water. The sound of the babbling stream and the sight of frost-covered ferns create a truly magical atmosphere.

For a more strenuous hike, the Dunkery Beacon Trail takes you to the highest point on Exmoor. The sweeping views from the summit— stretching across Somerset, Devon, and even Wales on a clear day—are well worth the climb.

iDeas to eNhaNCe YouR WiNteR Walks

Want to make your winter walks even more special? Here are some creative ways to enrich your experience:

make it a Photography Walk: Winter light is perfect for photography. Capture the play of shadows on frostcovered fields or the dramatic skies over the coast.

Bring a Nature Journal: Note down observations, sketch landscapes, or jot down reflections inspired by the peaceful surroundings.

Join a Guided Walk: Many local walking groups and organizations offer guided walks as part of the Festival of Winter Walks. It’s a great way to learn about the history, flora, and fauna of the area while meeting like-minded people.

turn it into a mini adventure: Pack a picnic of hearty soups, crusty bread, and festive treats to enjoy mid-walk. Choose a sheltered spot with a view and savor the moment.

The Festival of Winter Walks 2024 is more than an event—it’s an invitation to rediscover the beauty of the world around us during one of the most serene and enchanting times of the year. Whether you’re trekking across Dartmoor, strolling the Tarka Trail, or gazing at the horizon along the South West Coast Path, the joy of winter walking lies in its ability to bring us closer to nature, to others, and to ourselves.

So, this winter, don’t let the cold keep you indoors. Grab your boots, wrap up warm, and step outside. There’s a world waiting to be explored— frosted, tranquil, and full of wonder.

Recipes

It’s officially Christmas season so it’s time to preheat those ovens with some wholesome recipes. HBH Woolacotts has over 35 range cookers to choose from!

Easy Christmas Turkey

Serves - 6

IngredIents

• 100g butter, softened

• 3 rosemary sprigs, leaves picked and finely chopped

• 1 turkey (around 4kg, but not more), giblets removed

• 1 garlic bulb

• 1 lemon, halved

• 2 bay leaves

• 2 large banana shallots, unpeeled, cut in half lengthways

• 250ml white wine

• 1 red cabbage (about 900g), cut into 6 wedges

• 500ml good-quality chicken stock

• 1 tsp cornflour (optional)

1Take your turkey out of the fridge at least 1 hr before you cook it. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and beat the butter with the rosemary. Starting from the neck of the turkey, carefully push your fingers underneath the skin until you can get your whole hand between the skin and the breast meat. Trying not to tear the skin as you go, spread the butter inside the pocket, squishing some into the crevice between the thigh and breast meat.

2Put the garlic, lemon and bay leaves inside the turkey, then season liberally all over. Put the shallots in your largest flameproof roasting tin and put the turkey on top, breast-side up. Roast for 1 hr, then give it a good baste, pour in the wine and nestle the cabbage wedges in the tin (or underneath the turkey if they won’t fit). Return to the oven for another 30 mins – covered with foil if the turkey is looking too brown. The juices should run clear when you pierce the thickest part of the thigh, or a thermometer should read 75C. If not done, carry on cooking for a further 5-10 mins.

Set aside the turkey on a board to rest for 1 hr, transferring the garlic and bay to the roasting tin for the gravy. If you want crispy skin, don’t cover the turkey. Wrap the cabbage wedges in two parcels of foil, with a spoonful of the turkey juices, season liberally and return to the bottom of the oven to carry on cooking while the turkey rests.

4

Spoon away most of the turkey fat, then put the tin on the hob over a medium heat. Mash the veg with the back of a wooden spoon to extract as much flavour as possible , then pour in the stock and reduce the gravy by half. If you want to thicken it, stir in the cornflour mixed with 1 tbsp water. Once happy with the consistency, strain and keep warm until ready to eat.

Truffle & Parmesan roast potatoes

Serves - 6 - 8

IngredIents

• 1½ kg Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes, peeled and cut chunks

• 2 tbsp plain flour

1• 200ml vegetable oil

• 50g grated parmesan

• truffle oil, to taste

Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and cook the potatoes for 6-8 mins until the outsides are starting to soften. Drain well, then leave to steamdry for a few minutes. Will keep covered and chilled for up to two days. Return the potatoes to the pan, add the flour, put the lid on and shake well to coat the potatoes and fluff them up. Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.

Pour the oil into a deep roasting tin and put in the oven to heat for 5 mins. Take out of the oven and carefully spoon the potatoes into the hot oil, then baste in the oil so they’re well coated. Spread them out to a single layer and put in the oven to roast for 20 mins. Turn and baste again, roast for another 20 mins, then repeat and roast for a final 15-20 mins or until golden and crisp. Scatter over all but a couple of tablespoonfuls of the parmesan, then put back in the oven for 2 mins so the cheese melts.

2

3

Remove the potatoes from the tin, leaving as much oil behind as possible, and pile onto a platter or on a serving dish. Scatter over the remaining parmesan, give the platter or bowl a shake, then drizzle over a little truffle oil (we used ½ tsp, but use as much as you like).

1

Mix the cocoa, caster sugar and oil together. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking until fully combined. Stir the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt together in a separate bowl, then add to the cocoa mixture and mix until a soft dough forms. Separation and divorce can be an extremely difficult and stressful time, not only for the couple involved but also for any children.

Many couples find themselves involved in court proceedings that are costly and which are often hard for the parties to understand, mediation is often a simpler and less stressful process.

Many couples welcome a more constructive, cooperative, and amicable approach. With the assistance of an independent, neutral, and impartial mediator, these clients are able to have discussions and reach an agreement about their children and their financial circumstances.

Our mediation service combines our extensive knowledge of family law as solicitors with the confidentiality and impartiality of a trained mediator to help you resolve separation disputes regarding financial issues, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, and property division.

WhaT is a mediaTor?

A mediator is a specially trained facilitator. A mediator is neutral and impartial and does not take sides in the discussions. Our mediators are specially trained to help both parties find solutions to the problems that have arisen following separation. This avoids the need to attend court, reduces costs, and can assist in minimising stress and pressure. The collaborative nature of the discussions should lead to improvements in communication between a separating couple and leave them better able to co-parent their children in the long term.

Mediation is not…

Mediation is not counselling to assist you to reconcile.

Mediation helps you to come to joint decisions as to how to divide your assets and co-parent your children.

The mediator is not a Judge and will not decide what you should do.

The mediator will help you to find your own solutions that work very best for your particular family circumstances and for you.

Mediation is confidential and therefore any discussions cannot be placed before a Judge.

You are therefore able to discuss matters openly and transparently and to consider all possible options, rather than focussing on one particular position, as is encouraged through the courts.

The benefiTs of mediaTion

You set the agenda and you have the opportunity to speak directly to your former partner about the issues that are most important to you.

You have the opportunity to hear from your partner about the issues that are most important to them.

You resolve matters without going to court and putting your life in the hands of a judge, who you will have never met before and who will have only had an opportunity to briefly read the papers and hear from you before making decisions that will affect you possibly for the rest of your life.

Our mediation service is confidential

and cost-effective.

Mediation is flexible and we can work at the pace that you as a couple wish to work at.

engaging your children in The process

At the forefront of our mediator’s mind is the safety of all involved in the mediation and the children we will, therefore, assess the suitability of mediation before and during each meeting. For those who are committed to resolving matters without court proceedings, and wish a constructive solution, mediation is very often very successful.

geTTing feedback from your children

Our mediators are trained in dealing directly with children and with your agreement and proper planning, can see them to ascertain whether they wish to have feedback into discussions. Many agree that it is important for a child’s voice to be heard.

mediaTion for free –legal aid

Legal aid is still available for mediation for children and financial issues, where you are financially eligible. Even better, if one of you is eligible for legal aid, both of you can have the first individual meeting with our mediator and the first joint meeting, for free. Our team can undertake an assessment of your financial means in order to ascertain whether you would be eligible for legal aid.
