In the March edition of Plympton there are lots of insightful editorials and some tasty recipes.
For this year’s International Women’s Day, whilst bringing light to it’s importance, I can’t help but feel deeply saddened by the recent events that involved Claire Chick, a treasured member of the community, earlier this year. It’s quite poignant that this year’s global theme is Accelerate Action, which is calling for a faster pace of change to address the ongoing battle women face.
Thank you to Plymouth Gin Distillery for their fantastic prize for this issue & I hope you enjoy this edition.

Tell us about KF Kitchens.
KF Kitchens is a well-established kitchen design company with a reputation for delivering exceptional, tailored solutions. Since our inception in 2008, we have specialised in creating kitchens that seamlessly blend style, functionality, and quality craftsmanship. We work closely with clients to understand their individual needs and aspirations, ensuring every kitchen we design is a perfect reflection of their lifestyle. Whether it’s a contemporary open-plan space or a timeless classic design, we pride ourselves on delivering kitchens that stand the test of time.
We work with high-quality brands to ensure our kitchens not only look stunning but also perform exceptionally for years to come. Our kitchen ranges include Nolte, known for its precise German engineering and contemporary innovation, and Burbidge, a British manufacturer renowned for its timeless craftsmanship and attention to detail. For appliances, we offer leading brands such as Neff, with its intuitive technology and signature Slide&Hide® ovens; Miele, which is synonymous with premium quality and durability; and Gaggenau, offering luxury appliances that combine cutting-edge design with professional-grade performance.
What are the differences between using a design professional compared to a salesperson?
This choice can make a significant difference in the success of your kitchen project. A salesperson is typically focused on selling specific products and may have a more limited scope in terms of design creativity and problem-solving. Their goal is often to fit products into your space rather than to develop a personalised design that suits your lifestyle. Working with a design professional ensures a thoughtful, comprehensive approach that results in a kitchen that is both beautiful and practical. At KF Kitchens, we decide what we offer as part of our service, picking premium products that we think benefit the end user the most.
What should a new customer be asking when engaging the services of a design professional?
It’s important to ask questions that will ensure a smooth and successful project. Some key questions to ask include:
• What is your design process?
• Can you provide examples of past projects?
• How do you manage budgets and timelines?
• Can the designer tell you how much the project will cost, not just the kitchen furniture?
• Can the designer tell you who the team will be, and can also work with them effectively and efficiently?
These questions help you understand the designer’s process, communication style, and expertise, ensuring that your vision will be met and the project will run smoothly.
What are KF Kitchens’ top 5 tips if you’re looking for a good retailer (and how to avoid a bad one)?
Embarking on a kitchen renovation can be exciting but also overwhelming. Our top five tips to identify a good retailer are:
• Are they a part of a governing body such as the KBSA, Buy With Confidence or Trading Standards?
• Are they recommended, with a good track record and insightful reviews?
• Are they rushing to get you to pay your deposit and purchase, or are they considerate of the time you need to make these decisions?
• Do they promote taking payments by credit card to ensure consumer safety?
• Are they allied to large well-known brands?
What is KF Kitchens’ mantra?
Our mantra at KF Kitchens is “Creating a Kitchen to Keep Forever.” We believe that a kitchen is more than just a place to cook—it’s the heart of the home, where memories are made and everyday life happens. Our goal is to design kitchens that are not only stylish and functional but also spaces that truly enhance the way our clients live. Every project we take on is approached with passion, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering quality that lasts.
It is because of this KF Kitchens has stood the test of time. Our business relies heavily on the recommendations from our clients, so you will never be too far away from someone that has had a brilliant experience with KF Kitchens. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
March 8th is a day that belongs to all women, everywhere. International Women’s Day highlights how women all over the world have fought, and still fight, for gender equality.
As International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 approaches, the global theme, “Accelerate Action,” compels us to reflect on the progress made toward gender equality and the work that remains ahead. This year’s theme is a rallying cry to quicken the pace of change and tackle the systemic challenges women continue to face. However, here in Plymouth, this important day is also tinged with sorrow as we mourn the tragic loss of one of our own, Claire Chick.
Claire Chick was more than a name in the headlines—she was a deeply cherished member of our community. A dedicated nurse, an esteemed lecturer at the University of Plymouth, and a mentor to many, Claire made a lasting impact in her field and beyond. Her commitment to education extended across borders, having helped develop healthcare programs in Europe, Africa, and Asia. Her sudden and senseless passing is a harsh reminder that despite progress, violence against women remains a pressing issue in our society.
Her murder has sent shockwaves through our community, and we owe it to Claire—and to all women—to turn this grief into action. We must work together to create a world where women are safe, valued, and empowered.
THE ConTinUEd FigHT AgAinsT ViolEnCE ToWArds WomEn
Violence against women is not just a private tragedy—it is a societal crisis. The statistics are sobering: according to the office for national statistics, nearly 1 in 3 women in the UK will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, and two women are killed every week by a current
or former partner. These figures are more than just numbers; they represent real lives lost, futures stolen, and families torn apart.
Claire’s story is heartbreakingly familiar to too many women. We must take this moment to demand better protections, stronger laws, and more effective support systems for survivors. in Plymouth, local organizations such as Trevi Women’s Centre and Plymouth domestic Abuse services are working tirelessly to provide resources for women in need, but they cannot do it alone. Community support, government action, and cultural change are all necessary to make a real difference.
THE rolE oF EdUCATion in gEndEr EqUAliTy
Claire Chick’s life’s work centred around education, and it is through education that we can hope to break cycles of violence and inequality. Teaching young people about respect, consent, and healthy relationships is critical in creating a society where women feel safe. schools and universities must incorporate gender equality into their curriculums, ensuring that future generations grow up understanding the importance of mutual respect.
Beyond personal relationships, education is also a key factor in empowering women economically and professionally. girls who receive quality education are more likely to secure good jobs, become financially independent, and have the confidence to advocate for themselves. However, even today, women face significant barriers in higher education and the workforce, particularly in male-dominated fields like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (sTEm).
Encouraging young women to pursue careers in these fields, providing mentorship programs, and addressing workplace discrimination are all crucial steps in accelerating gender equality. Claire was an educator who believed in empowering others—let us
honour her by ensuring that all women have access to the opportunities they deserve.
one of the fundamental aspects of gender equality is economic empowerment. Women continue to face significant wage gaps, career stagnation, and workplace discrimination. According to recent data, the gender pay gap in the UK still persists, with women earning, on average, 15% less than men. Women also remain underrepresented in leadership roles, with only about 30% of top corporate positions held by women.
in Plymouth, female entrepreneurs and business owners contribute significantly to our economy, yet they still encounter barriers such as lack of funding, networking opportunities, and representation in decision-making spaces. international Women’s day is a reminder that economic equality is not just about fairness—it’s about building stronger businesses, communities, and economies. When women succeed, society as a whole benefits.
local initiatives aimed at supporting womenowned businesses, such as networking groups and mentorship programs, are making a difference, but more can be done. Companies must commit to equal pay policies, flexible working arrangements, and leadership development programs for women. By accelerating action in these areas, we can create a future where a woman’s success is not hindered by gender-based barriers.
AddrEssing WomEn’s HEAlTHCArE nEEds
Another critical aspect of gender equality is access to quality healthcare. Women’s health issues, including reproductive rights, maternal care, and mental health, often do not receive the attention they deserve. in Plymouth, women face challenges in accessing timely healthcare services, particularly in the areas of mental health and domestic violence support.
mental health, in particular, is an issue that requires urgent attention. Women are more likely than men to experience anxiety, depression, and PTsd, often as a result of gender-based violence, economic stress, or societal pressures. investing in mental health resources, creating safe spaces for women to seek help, and ensuring healthcare providers are trained in gender-sensitive care are essential steps in supporting women’s well-being.
CommUniTy ACTion: HoW PlymoUTH CAn lEAd THE WAy
While gender equality is a global issue, change starts locally. Plymouth has a vibrant community of women’s rights advocates, charities, and support groups dedicated to making a difference. on international Women’s day, we have an opportunity to amplify their voices, support their initiatives, and engage in meaningful discussions about how we can work together to create a safer, fairer society for women and girls.
HErE ArE somE WAys THE PEoPlE oF PlymoUTH CAn TAKE ACTion:
support local Women’s Charities: organisations such as Trevi House and Plymouth Women’s Aid provide essential services for women escaping domestic violence. donations, volunteering, and advocacy can help sustain these vital programs.
Attend iWd Events: look out for local events celebrating women’s achievements and discussing important issues. Participating in these events raises awareness and fosters community solidarity.
Challenge gender Bias: Whether in the workplace, at home, or in social settings, we must all challenge sexism when we see it. Calling out discriminatory behaviour and advocating for fair policies can contribute to lasting change.
mentor and Uplift other Women: Women supporting women is one of the most powerful ways to accelerate progress. Whether it’s mentoring a young professional, encouraging a friend to pursue her dreams, or celebrating the successes of women in our community, every small action counts.
looKing AHEAd: A FUTUrE oF EqUAliTy
international Women’s day 2025 is not just a celebration—it’s a call to action. The fight for gender equality is far from over, but by accelerating action, we can ensure a better future for the women and girls of Plymouth and beyond.
Claire Chick’s life was a shining example of what it means to empower others. Though her loss is devastating, we can honour her by continuing the work she believed in—advocating for education, safety, and equality for all women.
This iWd, let’s commit to making lasting change. let’s accelerate action, not just for one day, but every day until gender equality is no longer an aspiration, but a reality. For Claire. For all of us.

MOTHER’S DAY
Mother’s Day is on Sunday 30th of March and it’s time to show your mum that you really do care about her. Go and pick up a fresh bunch of flowers and tell her how much you love her!
Mothers and mother-figures are incomparable. They may be the first people we ever know when we enter the world, and they love and care for us as we grow up and beyond. Once a year, countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day; a day dedicated to all mothers or mother figures so that we can show our appreciation.
The fourth Sunday of Lent, otherwise known as Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday, is a time for celebrating all that our Mums have done for us over the years.
With more of us living further away from home and loved ones than ever before, the time we spend with our family on Mother’s Day is all the more special.Today, we know Mother’s Day as a day where we acknowledge the incredible things the women in our lives do for us.
Mother’s Day isn’t always about our own mothers, it’s about all mums, step-mums, mothers-in-law, mums to be, nans, grans, sisters, aunties, carers and the list goes on!
Mother’s Day is a chance to make them all feel special for all of the great things they do for us. It’s a day to show love, gratitude and appreciation to all wonderful mums everywhere, through acts of kindness and the giving of Mothers Day gifts and flowers.
But are lavish gifts such as jewellery, gift vouchers or spa days really what mums want for Mother’s day?
There are many things you can do for your mum on Mother’s Day to show her you care without splashing the cash, and she’ll probably appreciate it more anyway!
What more could you want on a day that’s all about you than a nice long, uninterrupted lie in?!
With Mother’s Day occurring on a Sunday, it’s the perfect day to allow mum to enjoy a few more hours in bed than normal without being interrupted by screaming, questions and nagging! You could even treat her to a delicious breakfast in bed after her well earned 12 hours of sleep.
Wouldn’t a nice, hot bubble bath be the perfect mother’s day treat?
Stock up on salts and lotions this Mother’s Day to allow your mum to sit back, relax and unwind for a long soak with a glass of her favourite wine, a new book or a soothing playlist of her best-loved songs blissfully playing in the background.
Let’s face it, most mums despise having a messy home with toys flung everywhere and mountains of washing piles scattered around the house.
So team up, grab some rubber gloves, sponges and the feather duster for a day of scrubbing and polishing. Mum can put her feet up with a cup of tea whilst you do the hard work hoovering and cleaningdon’t forget the washing, ironing and dishes too!
A day of relaxation and peace doesn’t have to be expensive and involve a fancy spa.
Why not take the kids out for the day to give mum a day of rest and pampering. And if you’ve got toddlers then she may even be able to go to the toilet without a 3-year-old hanging from her leg begging for food for the 10th time of the day...the littlest things really do make a difference!
To finish off the day with family time, cook up a feast of mums favourite meal for all to enjoy.
Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be all about spending money, it’s about spending time together and showing mum that you really do care and you’re grateful for all of the wonderful things she has done for you.
World WildlifeDay
This March why not embrace your wild side and let open up your garden to all sorts of wildlife.
living in devon it is clear that we are blessed with an abundance of wildlife around us. Weather it’s the hedgehogs roaming around in the early hours of the morning or the many sea creatures that roam the waters around us. Plymouth and the surrounding areas are one of the most biodiverse developed environments in the country and that is only possible because of all the effort that local people go to in order to ensure a happy home for our animal friends. As it’s World Wildlife day this month i’ve complied some little things you can do in your garden to protect the local wildlife.
Her murder has sent shockwaves through our community, and we owe it to Claire—and to all women—to turn this grief into action. We must work together to create a world where women are safe, valued, and empowered.
HAVing A HEdgEHog HoUsE
As winter fades and spring emerges, we are sure to see more colour and spark in our landscape so why not embrace that feeling and invite some new animals into your garden. A hedgehog house can also provide shelter and a place to raise its young so don’t be surprised if you have more than a few visitors. Hedgehogs can also help clean up your garden from garden pests such as slugs or snails so if you’re having a problem with some pesky holes in your garden veg then a hedgehog house might just be the perfect solution for you.
you might be asking how the hedgehogs are supposed to find their new little home well that’s where a wildlife corridor come in. This simple hedgehog-highway can be made by simply making holes in your fences maybe to a field or just an open space, if you want to get really into your wildlife conservation your can ask your neighbours to join you and create a hedgehog superhighway by having holes that stretch from one of the of your road to the other. maybe you have already got a hole in your fence that you’ve been meaning to patch up and now all you need to do is leave it or possibly make it the right size for some friendly spiky neighbours to pop their heads through.
Birds And BUTTErFliEs
if you want to further increase the biodiversity of your little oasis you can buy or build a beautiful birdhouse. similar to hedgehogs a bird in the garden might not sound like the solution to your garden woes however, they are excellent pest control as well great weed control and soil fertilization. not only is a birdhouse good for your garden but it may also be good for you; listening to birds chirping has been shown to decrease stress levels in people and it’s also a great way to show children a new perspective of nature and allow them to see up close why even in an urban environment animals such as birds are still so vital to the ecosystem. so whether you’re trying to relax after a tiring week or you’re just trying to have someone else tidy up the garden for free then definitely consider putting up a home made bird box.
There are not many flowers that will be bad for introducing some life into a garden, but some are better than others. one of the most effective are Zinnia flowers, not only do they flower within just a few weeks, but they are also an absolute favourite of all sorts of bee’s and butterflies. you can directly sow these wonderfully colourful flowers at the start of spring as now is the perfect time. Additionally, you could go all out and create a min-meadow in a
corner of the garden this way you can embrace the spirit of spring even more by just putting a chair down and watching the butterflies go to work in your own little sanctuary.
THE BEnAFiTs oF A WATEr FEATUrE
if your find yourself feeling like your garden is still missing something, then one of the best things you can do is add a water feature. This not only looks amazing but in a similar fashion to having a bird in the garden having a water feature can help create a calming environment, this can be perfect when you’ve had a stressful week at work or just in general. if you’re worried about the water going stagnant then the good news is some pond plants you can oxygenate the water so that way you will have a lovely water feature all year round and give the bees and butterflies some extra places to land.
A simPlE sWAP
if you already have many of the features discussed, then something you may not have thought have thought of changing the fertilizers you use. This can be as simple to swapping to a seaweed feed or even better your own compost. something else you can do is regularly mulching the ground; digging over soil in the beds and boarders can destroy vital micro-organisms that help our gardens come to life. mulching the ground instead can help keep everything in balance and eliminate to add artificial fertilizers. This balance is vital for keeping the local wildlife happy and create a great habitat for the circle of life.
lET iT groW!
if you’re not sure about how to go about creating a great garden for some wild companions, then maybe the easiest option is to do nothing. By this i mean that letting a corner of your garden grow wild can be an excellent low-effort way to nurture the perfect environment for many wild animals.
Although it may look a bit mesy at first a wild corner of a garden is something to be proud of. if you have particularly green sleeves it might be hard to resist going some TlC so this area but after a short while you will be able to marvel at your wonderfully wild corner and gaze into its freeing nature.
The best time to plant a tree in the garden was probably twenty years ago but the second-best time is now. A tree can
foster many different animals from birds to squirrels to the occasional owl. Trees suck up plenty of carbon dioxide over the years and provide some natural hedging across the edges of your garden. There is also nothing quite like sitting under a tree with a nice cold drink marvelling at the garden you have created over the years.
WHy is World WildFliFE dAy imPorTAnT?
World wildlife day is an opportunity to take a stepback and appreciate the amazing animals that surround us. many of these animals play curial roles within our area and its imporant that we give back to them, even in the smallest of ways.
i hope by reading this you’ve found some inspiration to let some wildlife into your garden this month. our local animals might not be as interesting as some other places across the world but its important to appreciate the beauty of our area when it’s cared for. our wildlife is so important to our ecosystem and by making a few changes in your garden you can change it into a lush natural nursery for all sorts of wildlife. so, get out to the garden and embrace your wild side!

Smoked Salmon Sushi
Makes - 32
IngReDIenTS
• 300g sushi rice
• 2 tbsp rice or white wine vinegar
• 1 tsp caster sugar
• 1 large avocado
• juice ½ lemon
• 4 sheets nori seaweed
• 4 large slices smoked salmon
• 1 bunch chives
• sweet soy sauce (kecap manis), to serve
1
Put the rice in a small pan with 600ml water. Bring to the boil and cook for 10 mins until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender. Stir through the vinegar and sugar, cover and cool.

Skin, stone and slice the avocado. Put in a bowl and squeeze over the lemon juice, turning the avocado to ensure the pieces are covered.
Divide the rice between the nori sheets and spread it out evenly, leaving a 1cm border at the top and bottom. Lay the salmon over the rice, followed by the chives and finally position the avocado across the centre.
Fold the bottom edge of the seaweed over the filling, then roll it up firmly. Dampen the top border with a little water to help it seal the roll. Repeat to make 4 rolls. At this stage, the rolls can be wrapped individually in cling film and chilled until ready to serve.
Using a serrated knife, cut each roll into 8 rounds. Serve with sweet soy sauce for dipping.
IngReDIenTS
• 140g plain flour
• 100g golden caster sugar, plus 2 tbsp
• zest 1 lemon
• 120g unsalted butter, diced
• ½ tsp vanilla extract
• 3 large eggs, beaten
• sunflower oil, for frying
• ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
• melted dark chocolate or salted caramel sauce
1
Boil the kettle. Sift the flour into a big mixing bowl with a big pinch of salt, then stir in the 2 tbsp sugar and lemon zest. Put 350ml boiling water, the butter and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Heat gently to melt, then bring to a simmer and, as soon as it is boiling, turn off the heat. Tip in the flour mixture and very quickly beat with a wooden spoon until lump-free. Cool for 5 mins, then beat in the eggs one at a time, with the spoon or an electric whisk. Rest for 1015 mins, or cover and chill for up to 24 hrs.

1 Churros Makes - 8-10
3
Fill a large, deep saucepan one-third full of oil. Heat until it reaches 180°C on a cooking thermometer. Cover a tray with kitchen paper, and mix the caster sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl.
2
Fit a star nozzle to a piping bag – 1-2cm wide is a good size. Fill with the rested dough, then pipe 2-3 strips directly into the pan, snipping off each dough strip with a pair of scissors. Fry until golden brown and crisp, then remove with a slotted spoon and drain on the kitchen paper-lined tray. Carry on cooking the rest of the dough in batches, sprinkling the cooked churros with some cinnamon sugar as you go. Dip the warm churros into the melted chocolate or salted caramel sauce and enjoy.

• 50g rolled porridge oats
• 2 tbsp natural yogurt
