We interviewed Jason and Ben from Plymouth Property Maintenance for this month’s Business Profile feature to find out how they have used lockdown to expand their team. The feature talks about how they started and the exciting plans they have for the future, turn to pages 6 & 7 for an inspiring story. Managing Directors Ben & Jason
They say the strongest business is a business created out of passion. In today’s economy every successful small-business owner and entrepreneur must have a passion that drives them forward - a core belief that keeps them pressing on no matter what they face. It is that passion that creates your drive, ambition and the love of what you do and who you serve, it also provides you with a very special view of the world that often keeps you going despite the difficulties your business might face. This is the story of 2 primary school friends who kept in touch throughout their lives because they kept that passion for their friendship, that eventually brought them together to create one of the fastest growing customer focused businesses in Plymouth. Jason Peek and Ben Stanbury have been friends long before they can remember. From as early as 4 years old they can remember playing in each other’s family gardens, sleep overs, primary school and secondary school were all shared in the early part of their lives. That was until Jason decided to join the Royal Navy in early 2006 . Both kept in touch where possible however both unknowingly pursued exactly the same careers as Marine Engineers, this is what undoubtedly brought them back together one day. After Jason left the Navy in 2011 he started a career working in the oil and shipping industry still as a Marine Engineer, in the meantime Ben had been working as a Marine Engineer on local harbour boats in Plymouth. One day after bumping into each other one evening Jason suggested his lifelong friend Ben join him for a career in the shipping industry, Ben was looking for a new challenge so this is exactly what he did.
The two travelled all over the world together, sometimes months at a time in the shipping industry, they were briefly separated before meeting again by chance during a training course in Abu Dhabi. At the time life was good but they both agreed although the money and the travel was very appealing, the long time away had it downsides. It was after both of their wives became pregnant around the same time in 2016 they soon realised that time apart from their families was no longer what they wanted in life. This is when they started to plan going into business together where they could be around their families back in the UK. “We came back from offshore because the money doesn’t outway family life”. Said Jason. After just weeks of preparation Jason and Ben set up PS Handyman in 2016. To start with this was just part time fitting jobs around their careers, however due to their passion and service for the job not long after they became full time at PSH in January 2017. With the equal drive and passion from both partners, success came quickly and within just 12 months they decided they wanted to push themselves further so they set up Plymouth Property Maintenance in February 2018. The Plymouth based property maintenance and handyman business was very different from the marine engineering careers they once had. Instead they provided professional maintenance service for both private and commercial

clients including landlords, letting agents and homeowners. But why such a drastic career change? “It was more of a hobby doing the property maintenance job, we enjoyed it, there was never a day where we didn’t go to work and didn’t enjoy it.” Said Jason. And so through hard work, planning and determination both Jason & Ben successfully managed to build a customer focused business that they enjoy doing and have a passion for each day of their lives. Their ethos is all about giving the very best level of workmanship and fantastic customer service. Resulting in high quality finished results the team are proud of, but most importantly exceeds the customers’ expectations time and time again. “We offer good customer service, we are 100% honest with the customer and our communication is different to anyone else.” Said Ben. Customer service is at the centre of what they do. Their communication really is like no other. They know customer service makes all the difference, not just in property maintenance but in everyday life, so they want their service to be an enjoyable one their clients remember. “We don’t want clients to hesitate to pick up the phone, if there is a fault or something we have done to cause an issue, we will come out as soon as reasonably possible to repair it for free.” Said Jason Not like many other businesses who offer a 3 month guarantee, they offer a 12 month guarantee on their services because they know they are confident their service will last and if there is a problem, they will make sure they fix it within a matter of days. This is great to hear as we all know how stressful it can be when you find out a

jobs to organise, proving themselves to be very popular! They even had to hire two more employees which goes to show that their business is going from strength to strength. The guys at Plymouth Property Maintenance never stopped thinking and planning during lockdown as it is their passion and they really do love what they do.
“We give enough time on the job to make sure nothing is rushed. It is the quality of work and the friendly service. All of our guys are nice people.” Said Ben.
If anything, the lockdown allowed them time to reflect on their business, be more cost efficient with expenses and think about where they saw themselves in the years that followed.
When it comes to health and safety Jason and Ben take the utmost care when it comes to their employees and clients; issuing everyone masks and gloves.
They even had weekly zoom quizzes with their staff and always kept them updated because that is what they believe in; great communication.
They also ask the customers if they are happy for them to come inside because they respect people’s boundaries and want them to feel completely safe and comfortable.
Setting up their own office and progressing onto more extensive and complex work like loft conversions are some of the next big steps to reaching this promising goal.
During lockdown they also only booked work from the end of May to mid/end July and only took on outside work and empty properties. So they took on a lot of decking, patio and fencing jobs.
“We want to be that one stop shop in the South West where people are confident just to ring us and we will do any job they need doing.” Said Ben.
After lockdown they were faced with 52

HELP PLYMPTON ANIMAL SHELTER FUND TLC FOR ITS OAPS
P
lympton animal sanctuary is urgently appealing for help to care for an increasing number of elderly and infirmed animals. Woodside Animal Welfare Trust at Elfordleigh, Plympton, is one of the few charities in the South West to provide a forever home to animals with age or health issues. But at a time when funding has plummeted during the Covid-19 outbreak, the cost of caring for long-term residents has continued to climb. Cats, dogs, pigs and ponies are among the 50-plus animals living out their days at the Sanctuary in dedicated units filled with creature comforts.
“If someone is concerned and they register with us, we take their details and supply them with a card. On this card it states that if they are unable to look after their animal, to contact Woodside.” Among the residents is tabby cat Tigger, who spent years being fed by workers at Devonport Dockyard before being rehomed by one of them. When his owner passed away, Tigger moved to Woodside, where he is happily living out his twilight years in the resident cat units, which are home to more than 20 cats.
“We have seen a rise in the number of elderly cats joining us and others needing to join our resident areas for medical reasons.
“Resident cats can roam any other part of the sanctuary that takes their fancy. Our dogs get to walk in the forest and go up onto our fields to run around. “We have a no-kill policy and have been committed to that for a long time. Only if an animal is suffering or is considered dangerous will this be considered.” Carole said the Covid outbreak had encouraged people to think about what would happen to their pets should they not be around for them.
P.A.W.S (Pals At Woodside Sanctuary), enables supporters to choose an animal on the Woodside website to sponsor. For £10, the sponsor will receive a photo and biography of their chosen animal by email, ensuring all of the money goes directly to helping the animal in the short term. P.A.W.S will run alongside Woodside’s existing sponsorship programmes, which provide long-term support to animals at the Sanctuary. This includes a group sponsorship scheme, enabling supporters to sponsor the ‘residents’ or one of the charity’s many other animal groups, including the Hill Billies (goats), The Clucky Crows (chickens), Pigs Paradise, Horsey Haven and the Ba Ba Bunch. This costs £60 a year.
Woodside founder Carole Bowles MBE said the charity was committed to giving these animals a loving and comfortable home.
“In a lot of cases, the owner will have passed away, or the owner might have moved to somewhere that doesn’t allow pets.
Since March, around £2,500 has been raised by a lockdown sponsorship programme. Its success has led to a permanent scheme being launched.
Tabby Cat Resident - Tigger
As demand for these units has increased, the charity’s funding has plummeted, with the sudden closure of its charity shops in March costing the sanctuary £30,000 a month. While some stores have now reopened under restrictions, the charity continues to be hit by a fall in fundraising, as events are cancelled. Carole said: “We are working hard to make up the shortfall. One of the most popular ways is to choose one of the pets at the Sanctuary and sponsor them.”
Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts
Alternatively, there is a kennel, cat pod or rabbit sponsorship programme. Run online, supporters can sponsor an individual animal for £50 a year. Deputy manager Dawn Cornish said: “P.A.W.S will not replace the long term support from our other schemes. These sponsorship schemes provide ongoing support for the charity’s work and are a vital part of our funding, particularly at the moment.”
To support the P.A.W.S scheme, simply visit the charity’s website www. woodsidesanctuary.org.uk to choose an animal before calling the Sanctuary on (01752) 347503 August 2020 11

STAYCATION: DEVON & CORNWALL Now is the perfect time to be planning your very own staycation. Read on to find out what it is, why we should be ‘staycating’, the benefits, and where’s recommended!
W
ith all the uncertainty right now the world is facing with holiday bookings and flights, why not take the stress out of the equation and take the opportunity to plan your very own staycation in Devon and Cornwall without having to board a plane.
WHAT IS IT? We are sure most of you know what a staycation is, but for those who don’t a staycation is a holiday spent in your home country rather than abroad which would involve day or overnight trips within your local area. It is also a type of sustainable tourism and a term that derived from ecological awareness! Maybe you are thinking why should I “staycate” but now wouldn’t be a better time to do so keeping in mind of current events and Covid-19 guidelines. There are also plenty of benefits and reasons to stay in the UK too.
WHY ‘STAYCATE’? Devon has been named the UK’s second favourite holiday destination with Cornwall coming just above that. The top 4 counties for a staycation 1. Cornwall 2. Devon 3. Cumbria 4. Dorset Both counties are renowned for being the most popular destination spots for staycations and we couldn’t agree more! Thurlstone, Bantham and Wembury are among some of the most popular beaches to visit in Devon.
3. Bring revenue to the economy Support your local businesses by spending your money on the restaurants, shops and hotels in your local area. 4. More time to relax - Many vacations require a great deal of travelling, but that is cut right down not waiting for flights and taxiing to hotels. 5. Easier to plan & organise - Seeing as you already live in the area you are staying in, you are going to be more familiar with what your county has to offer!
Needless to say, Cornwall also has fantastic beaches to go and see, including St.Ives, Bude and Perranporth. The county even has the longest coastline in the UK! (1086km to be exact). Why wouldn’t you want to visit?
BENEFITS OF ‘STAYCATING’ When it comes to the benefits of staycations, there are numerous reasons why we should all be enjoying ourselves and developing a greater appreciation for our own home turf. Here are 8 reasons why:
12 August 2020
6. Be a tourist in your own county Why not learn more about your counties history and heritage. It will prove to be a true eye-opener.
1. Save money - A staycation can save a family hundreds or even thousands of pounds from travel expenses.
7. There’s plenty of things to do Holidays in Devon and Cornwall offer countryside and coastline to suit all interests and budgets.
2. Reduce your carbon footprint Worldwide, flights produced 915 million tonnes of CO2 in 2019 which is the leading contributor to global warming.
8. Find your new favourite place you can revisit with ease - There’s nothing better than being able to revisit a newfound favourite restaurant near you!

Leisure & Events OUTDOOR ATTRACTIONS At a time like this, it is incredible important to be doing our part in helping the economy recover during what seems to be a truly uncertain time. To help the economy with its recovery period the Editor of OM has recommended several staycation destinations definitely worth the visit within Devon and Cornwall. A fascinating visit to say the least! • Pennywell Farm - Award winning Farm Activity Park, the biggest in the South West which was founded in 1989!
MOTORHOME FRIENDLY CAMPSITES Since lockdown restrictions have been eased, the demand for motorhomes has increased considerably. As they are self contained vehicles with a range of onboard facilities, they make a great option for social distancing. Motorhome Campsites: • Woodovis Holiday Park • Parkland Caravan and Camping Site • Bude Camping & Caravanning Club Site

• Padstow Touring Park These are some of the amazing campsites out there for you to go visit and having a motorhome gives you the freedom to go off and have a staycation without worrying about accommodation!

Coolcamping.com is a great website to use if you are ever stuck on finding your desired glamping site. We recommend: • Coastal Cabins - Bideford Luxury wooden cabins in the stunning North Devon countryside
1. Visit a museum - The Timehouse in Totnes and Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro are great all rounders for family and friends. 2. • Cheglinch Farm Glamping - Ilfracombe Small-scale, eco-friendly glamping on a working Devon farm and the West Country coast nearby Cornwall destinations: • Land’s End Landmark - One of Britain’s best loved landmarks, famous for its unique location and beautiful scenery. • Tintagel Castle - Learn the history behind the medieval fortification situated high on North Cornwalls rugged north coast. • Bodmin Moor - A remote granite moorland 208 square kilometres in size. Encompassed with grazing ponies and cattle. • Eden Project - One of the most popular attractions in Cornwall with over 3000 species of plant!
• Cotna Eco Retreat - St.Austell A comfortable eco-accomodation in yurts, a shepherd’s hut and a straw bale barn. • East Thorne Glamping - Bude Stress-free family yurt and roundhouse glamping, just a 10 minute drive from the wild coastline. Whatever you fancy, whether it be a cabin or a tipi there is something for everyone. The great thing about glamping sites is that they have on-site toilets, so no need to worry about that.
Hopefully this editorial has persuaded you to plan a staycation this year in Devon and Cornwall. There’s nothing better than exploring your home county!
However, some don’t always allow dogs so it is best to check before booking if you are thinking about taking your furry friends with you!
So, what are you waiting for? There are plenty of options for a staycation, so put on your walking shoes, pack your bags and get exploring!

CYCLE TO WORK DAY Thursday 6th August
Cycle to work day is an important event that everyone can get involved in. Read on to find out more about what it is, the health benefits, government schemes and more!
D
o you want to take up the challenge on cycling to work this year? It is a brilliant investment if you are looking to save money from car expenses, get fit or do your part to reduce your carbon footprint. It is an activity everyone should partake in!
WHEN IS IT?
CYCLE TO WORK SCHEME There is also a cycle to work scheme the government has been running which is a government backed initiative. This means you can save 25-39% on the cost of bikes, e-bikes, cycling accessories, clothing and bicycle components.
Cycle to work day happens every year, this time it is on Thursday the 6th of August. Don’t worry if you haven’t got yourself on a bike in while, even if it has been a few months or years since your last bike ride.
As well as these savings, you can also benefit from spreading the cost interest free (typically over 12 months). This means good news regarding our efforts to reducing our carbon footprint, cycle to work day is something that we should all be considering.
This day is all about just giving it a go. You could even rent out a bike at Plymouth Bike Hire first to see how you feel or even borrow one of your friend’s bikes before you go out and buy one. Obviously ask for your friends permission first!
If I told you that riding your bike saves around 270g of Co2 per passengerkilometre which is what your average car emits, a bicycle is a good investment for our planet and your pockets.
Cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. This is great if you are looking to stay fit or get fit. The health benefits of regular cycling include: · increased cardiovascular fitness · increased muscle strength and flexibility · improved joint mobility · decreased stress levels · improved posture and coordination · strengthened bones · decreased body fat levels · prevention or management of disease · reduced anxiety and depression.
Other benefits aside from the cycle to work scheme include saving a considerable amount of money from annual/monthly vehicle expenses, avoiding traffic jams and health benefits.
HEALTH BENEFITS It’s safe to say there are plenty more people riding a bicycle in 2020. Following the coronavirus pandemic, more people have put on their helmets and rode across cities and countryside’s now that there are fewer vehicles on the road. Although, as our lifestyles slowly get back to normal and vehicle levels increase, we shouldn’t let ourselves get discouraged to put on our riding gear and cycle to work as there are numerous health benefits to regular cycling.

PLYMOUTH Back in business
Being back in business can be a daunting time for many for employees and customers but getting out there and supporting your local businesses is needed more now than ever!
N
ow restrictions have been eased, businesses are slowly getting back up and running again. For many, it has been a truly difficult time financially and emotionally but we want to give businesses the support and show consumers that employers are doing everything they can to prevent the spread of Covid -19. As we all get back in business there are multiple guidelines to follow which can be overwhelming at first however, we are sure the information set out below will leave you feeling confident and self-assured on how to stay safe during the pandemic.
CURRENT GUIDELINES It is highly important that we stay alert during the covid crisis and protect those around us. The guidelines below are featured on the gov.uk website and inform us on how we can stay safe.
SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Although we are all apprehensive about getting back out there and spending our money, it is incredibly important that we do so to support our local businesses. Here are a few ways you can do this in your local area: • Dine “out” at home - order takeout and enjoy dinner from the comfort of your own home • Shop local - whether it be coffee beans or seasonal fruit, support your local farmers to generate cash flow within the UK • Treat yourself - buy gift cards as presents as a way of instantly putting money into the business • Leave positive reviews -build up your community as good reviews lead to more customers • Take virtual classes - whether it be a fitness class or an art class there is something for everyone to enjoy And so we can all do a little something to help our local businesses recover. Trying out some of these for yourself will be greatly appreciated for business owners.
We are told we can all help control the virus if we all stay alert. This means you must: • Stay at home where possible and work from home if you can • Limit contact with other people and keep your distance from people not in your household (2 metres apart where possible) • Wash your hands regularly
26 August 2020
CORONAVIRUS AND FOOD We all worry about this particular problem when it comes to the disease however, the risk of coronavirus cross-contamination to food and food packaging is very low. Food businesses must ensure that they have the correct food hygiene and food safety processes in place to protect their customers. To put your mind at more ease: • It is very unlikely that you can catch coronavirus (COVID-19) from food. • Cooking thoroughly will kill the virus. • COVID-19 is a respiratory illness. It is not known to be transmitted by exposure to food or food packaging. • You will reduce the risk of getting the disease if you wash your hands regularly with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds before handling or eating food. Businesses are doing everything they can to abide by safety measures put in place so their customers feel safe when visiting a shop, pub or restaurant.
USEFUL WEBSITE LINKS We think it is important to make sure people are aware and kept informed of the latest information regarding coronavirus guidelines, your well being and information www.gov.uk www.mind.org.uk www.nhs.uk

We also spoke with The Door Doctor; a double glazing supplier in Plymouth to see what measures they have put in place for customer safety. What changes and provisions have you put in place to ensure customer safety? “We here at The Door Doctor are adhering to all of the latest government regulations. Our shop is still open during normal business hours, but we are only permitting 1 customer inside at a time to ensure social distancing guidelines are met. We also wear appropriate PPE and sanitize our equipment and our hands accordingly when conducting house visits and appointments.” This is great to hear if you are feeling anxious about getting back out there. The Door Doctor and other businesses are doing everything they can to ensure their customers feel safe during these precarious circumstances.
YOUR WELLBEING We know how important it is to look after your wellbeing during a time like this, you might be feeling overwhelmed, sad or confused about coronavirus but there are lots of things you can do to look after your physical and mental health that may help you to feel better! Follow advice from the NHS, this includes information about how to wash your hands and other things you can do to limit the spread of the virus. Be kind to yourself too, If the advice makes you feel more worried, talk to someone you trust about how you feel like a parent, friend or a doctor. Even if you feel like you don’t want to, relieving some of the stress that has been a burden to you can be very beneficial to your wellbeing!
Take breaks from social media and the news. It can be overwhelming to constantly be reminded about the virus. By giving yourself time out from social media, you will give yourself space to think and relax which is very important if you feel overwhelmed.
to visit us either in store or online at Vospers.com. We are pleased with our safety measures and both our staff and customers are telling us they are too.”
Also read from reliable and credited sources for information about Covid-19. There is a lot of misinformation circulating the web about Covid-19 so it is best to seek updates from trusted sources instead of relying on social media which may not always be correct. As well as this, make a plan for what you will need to do incase you do need to self-isolate. Having a plan of the activities you will get up to to keep you busy will make you feel less worried about self-isolation if it comes to it.
WORKING SAFELY DURING COVID -19 Vospers have also spoken about their safety measures they have put in place for their staff and employees. “Vospers have taken the situation very seriously and were quick to implement significant changes to processes and premises to protect both our staff and our customers. As one of the first industries to re-open we had worked hard to prepare our showrooms and teams for the new-normal. All of our dealerships are COVID Secure with sanitisation stations at all dealerships and strict physical distancing rules, zonal floor markings, one-way systems, and protective equipment for all staff - including masks. We successfully safely reopened to the public on the 1st of June and have received a lot of praise from customers on our new processes and procedures, and how safe they have felt visiting us.
We spoke with Dr Harker; a medical director of Erme Skin Clinic and asked her a few questions regarding Covid-19 and the safety measures she has put in place to ensure the safety of her patients. How has the pandemic affected the operation of your business? “Patients have to be allotted more time due to all the Covid precautions. It is rather hot and stuffy working in all the PPE but that’s how it’s got to be! The Virus Killer Air Purifier is obviously doing a champion job but it is a bit noisy and so I have to talk loudly to patients.” Will customers still be able to receive all the services your business has to offer? “Yes, we are gradually building that up to offer the wide range of medical services that the Erme Skin Clinic offered before. Have you implemented any new services to your business while operating in the pandemic?
We also invested in sanitisation units that completely sanitise the interior of vehicles which we’re using for demonstrator and sold vehicles. Service customers also have the option of a full sanitisation should they wish. For those customers who are vulnerable we have introduced virtual appointments, video messaging, and a collection & delivery service.
“A lot of the consultations have been on line or by phone or video since lockdown. Patients have sent photos of their moles or lumps and bumps they want removed, or have sent photos full face and side view of their silhouette they wish improved by the Silhouette Soft Thread face and neck lift. This is very helpful.”
We are asking customers to pre-book their visit to the dealership where possible, as we are working with reduced staff. We welcome customers
It is great to see The Erme Clinic back in business after months in lockdown and we hope this has given you some confidence in feeling safe to get out there again!

Are also among the other leisure activities you can participate in this Summer!
Have you implemented any new services or products to your business while operating in the pandemic?
“We have locked doors so we are appointment only and everyone is asked to sanitise hands on entry, wear a mask and pay with card. We have also staggered working hours for all the staff who are now wearing visors, so there are less people in our store and our hours are open later.
“No new services have been introduced as a result of the pandemic.”
We have screens in place and removed some chairs and staff are cleaning stations after every visit and gowns are washed after every client.”
“We are still offering all services as before!”
We also got in contact with Tricia Kennedy, the owner and Mortgage and Protection Adviser for Mortgages 4 Plymouth to discuss what safety measures they have put in place for Covid-19 Plymouth Will Writing Service expressed their safety measures too and the changes they have put in place. What changes and provisions have you put in place to ensure customer safety? “Customer safety is extremely important to me at Plymouth Will Writing Service. We have introduced the following measures to ensure all of our clients are as safe as possible. Initially, a short conversation will take place to ensure our clients have not had Corona Virus, not been in contact with anyone who later contracted the virus or is in isolation. All being well the clients can then make an appointment to come to our offices.
THINGS TO DO With businesses being back in business, gyms, pubs, restaurants, salons and high street shops are now open! It would be a great time to get back into your regular lifestyle habits, albeit a few new safety restrictions put into place and get out there to support your local businesses! There are plenty of things to do now restrictions are being eased further. • Theatres & Theme parks • Museums

We have not yet seen the need to utilise Zoom or any other format of online meetings at this time.”
On entry, hand sanitiser will be used. I have two desks that are set up with anti splash guards and one of these will be used. I also have a face shield that is easy to use and does not inhibit conversation. For some home visits I also use a face mask and latex gloves. Our normal greetings are now verbal and hand shakes are a thing of the past. Apart from this, the meetings can continue as normal and we do not see this changing anytime soon.” How has the pandemic affected the operation of your business? ”Our business uses modern technology and apart from the initial fact find, everything else is completed by on computer. The end product is then produced in paper format.

What changes and provisions have you put in place to ensure customer safety? “We have not stopped we have been very busy throughout, all our staff have been so busy helping clients buy property, re mortgaging and raising funds for home improvements. All appointments are very quick as we are able to speak to people by phone and Skype and have asked them to send in documents prior to their appointment. We are now very efficient and intend to continue this process. The Office has plenty of room to socially distance for those clients who wish to have a face to face appointment, with sanitiser and face masks available.” Have you implemented any new services or products to your business while operating in the pandemic? “Absolutely, we are so lucky to be appointed representatives of PRIMIS the largest mortgage network in the UK today, so we have plenty of products available to help first time buyers get on the property ladder.” So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and support your local high street that are now back in business! Just remember to keep the guidelines in mind. Best wishes from the OM team.

MAKING A WILL DURING LOCKDOWN - HOWARD & OVER
W
probate process much easier for loved ones that you are leaving behind.
hilst it has always been important to make sure that you have a Will in place, the recent pandemic has made even the most confident amongst us think about their mortality and for this reason the Law Society has reported a significant increase in people choosing to make a Will.
‘LOCKDOWN WILLS’ The improvement of video calling technology has allowed solicitors to safely take instructions from clients during lockdown and continue to draft Wills whether in the office or whilst working from home however the difficulty arises when it comes to signing the documents.
Making a Will is important for many reasons. Rather than leave the government’s Intestacy Rules to decide who should inherit and have the right to deal with your assets (which is the case if you do not have a Will in place), if you have made a Will you instead get to decide who should sort out the paperwork upon your death, who you wish to receive your property, personal possessions and bank accounts, decide upon funeral wishes and appoint who is to be a guardian for your children.
It is vital that a Will be completed correctly. If a Will does not meet with the formal requirements, then it will not be valid. One of the requirements for a valid Will are for it to be signed in the presence of two witnesses. The witnesses must be independent therefore they cannot be family members, they must not be inheriting anything in your Will and they must be over the age of 18.
By making a Will you can also help to reduce the Inheritance Tax payable on your death as a solicitor can make sure that you leave your estate in the most tax efficient manner. It can also be used to reduce liability for nursing home fees in the future.
The requirement for two independent witnesses has caused problems for those wishing to execute their Wills whilst isolating during the Coronavirus outbreak. The social distancing rules in place currently do not allow contact with anyone from outside of your household. Despite calls for the strict Will signing
Having a Will in place will also make the
requirements to be relaxed during the pandemic such as by reducing the requirement to one witness or by allowing the documents to be witnessed via a video call, the government has not made any changes to the law to date. Instead, we are now seeing the witnessing of Wills being forced to take place in an outside environment, with PPE and through windows. These unconventional methods however have allowed us to continue to ensure that Wills are executed validly and give peace of mind to our clients. If you would like to make a Will, please contact Katherine Millman on 01752 690123, a partner at Howard and Over Solicitors. Katherine also deals with Lasting Powers of Attorney and Probate. Howard and Over are a member of the National Free Wills Network. www.howard-over.co.uk
