Plymouth’s Lighthouse History Everyone knows of the iconic Smeaton’s Tower standing proud on Plymouth Hoe, but did you know that it is the third of four Eddystone Lighthouses? These impressive structures served as a beacon of safety for passing ships to aviod the treacherous reef below Douglass’ Tower and Smeaton’s Tower stump today

T

he Eddystone, or Eddystone Rocks forms part of an extensive reef of eroded rocks which rise up in deep water about 14 miles South West of Plymouth. Formerly a treacherous hazard for ships approaching the English Channel and the port city of Plymouth, the rocks have played host to four generations of the Eddystone Lighthouse. What can be seen today is the fourth version of the lighthouse- Douglass’s Tower. Next to this, the stump from the third generation, Smeaton’s Tower still stands. The Eddystone Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be built on a small group of rocks in open sea and resulted in a few disasters until the present lighthouse which stands there today. Given the harsh surrounding these early lighthouses where considered a marvel of ingenuity.

1. WINSTANLEY’S TOWER 1698 - 1703

Smeaton’s Tower was re-erected to become on of Plymouth’s most famous landmarks

The first tower attempt to render the Eddystone Reef of rocks safe to shipping was by a man named Henry Winstanley, an engraver, merchant ship owner, and designer. Winstanley promised to rid the English Channel of such a menace to shipping after one of the ships he had invested in heavily was destroyed by the Eddystone Rocks. In 1696, Winstanley commenced work on the octagonal wooden structure. The work progressed steadily until 1697 when an incident occurred in which a French privateer captured Winstanley and took him to France. England was at war with France at this time. However, when Louis XIV heard of the incident he immediately ordered that Winstanley be released saying that “France was at war with England, not with humanity”. This rendered the importance of the Eddystone International. The light in the Eddytone was first lit in1698. 24 candles were used in total and it was the first offshore lighthouse to be built in Britain. Winstanley was known as an eccentric, and this was reflected in his architecture. External ladders, a huge weather vane and ornamental scroll work adorned the exterior of the huge structure.

1. Having great confidence in his structure Winstanley expressed a wish to be on the lighthouse during a storm. In November 1703, the greatest storm ever recorded in this country occurred. The following day there was hardly any of the lighthouse structure to be seen and its occupants had disappeared. The lighthouse had survived only three years.

recommended by the Royal Society, travelled to Plymouth to take on this task. He had decided to construct a tower based on the shape of an English Oak tree for strength but made of granite blocks rather than wood. The lighthouse had a slightly curved profile, which strengthened the structure and gave it a low centre of gravity.

Just two days after the tragedy the tobacco ship, ‘Winchelsea’, was wrecked on the reef, but it would be another three years before someone was appointed to design a new lighthouse.

John Smeaton pioneered ‘hydraulic lime’, a quick drying concrete that will set under water, the formula for which is still used today. He also developed a technique of securing the granite blocks using dovetail joints and marble dowels. He is also credited with coming up with a device for lifting large blocks of stone from ships at sea to considerable heights which has never been improved upon.

2. RUDYERD’S TOWER 1709 - 1755

Captain Lovett acquired the lease of the rock for 99 years, and by an Act of Parliament was allowed to charge all ships passing, a toll of 1d per ton, both inward and outward. His designer was John Rudyerd, a London based silk merchant with West Country roots, who he engaged to design and build a new lighthouse for the Eddystone reef in 1706. Taking a shipbuilders- rather than a house builders, approach he came up with a design based on a cone instead of Winstanley’s octagonal shape. He built a conical wooden structure around a core of brick and concrete and it was first lit in 1709.

This design was solid and the lighthouse lasted for 47 years, until it was destroyed not by the sea, but by a fire. In 1755, the top of the lantern caught fire. Henry Hall, the keeper on watch, who was 94 years old (some accounts say 84 years old) did his best to put out the fire by throwing water upwards from a bucket. While doing so, the leaden roof melted, and molten lead ran down his throat as he was looking up. He and the other keepers battled continuously against the fire, but as it burnt downwards it gradually drove them out onto the rock. The lighthouse continued to burn for 5 days and was completely destroyed.

Sadly, Henry lived only 12 days after the incident. The piece of lead found in Henry Halls stomach after post Mortem can still be seen today in the Edinburgh Museum.

3. SMEATON’S TOWER 1759 - 1882 Smeaton’s Tower- the third lighthouse, marked a major step forward in the design of such structures. For the first time on this site was the work of a leader in the civil engineering profession of his time. After experiencing the benefit of a light for 52 years, mariners were anxious to have it replaced as soon as possible. In 1756, a Yorkshire man and civil engineer named John Smeaton, who had been

Local granite blocks was used for both the foundations and exterior of his tower, and Portland stone for the inside. Construction started in 1756 at Millbay and the light was first lit by 24 candles on 16 October 1759. Smeaton’s robust tower set the pattern for a new era of lighthouse construction. In the 1870’s cracks appeared in the rock upon which Smeaton’s lighthouse had stood for 120 years. It was also by this time, too small to contain the latest machinery. It was re-erected on Plymouth Hoe as a monument to the builder and has been Plymouth’s most famous landmark ever since.

4. DOUGLASS’S TOWER - 1882 ONWARDS Because the move of Smeaton’s Tower was pre-determined, a replacement lighthouse was able to be planned quickly. The new larger tower, 49 metres high, was designed by James Douglass, at the time Engineer-in-Chief of Trinity House. It was founded on the actual body of the Eddystone reef some 40 yards to the south-east of Smeaton’s site. By now, lighthouse construction was a much more refined business due to the developments made throughout the years. Douglass used larger stones, dovetailed not only to each other on all sides but also to the courses above and below. It was completed in three and a half years, and in 1882 the present Eddystone Lighthouse was opened amidst a blaze of publicity, by the Duke of Edinburgh, who laid the final stone of the tower. Douglass Towers original oil powered lamps were replaced by electrics in the 1950’s, and a helicopter deck was constructed in 1980. Another part of the modernisation process was the lighthouse becoming unmanned in 1982, bringing an end to the 284 years of keepers of the Eddystone Light.

ny cancer diagnosis is incredibly difficult to hear, a truly life changing moment for both the individual diagnosed and their family, but for those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer it is often worse than for most. Pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed very late because there are not yet any early tests for it and the symptoms are easily confused with the effects of aging or any number of other far less serious conditions. By the time pancreatic cancer is diagnosed the average prognosis is just 6 months, meaning that half of people diagnosed are told that they have less than 6 months left to live. The impact of pancreatic cancer on the individual affected and the family is hard to explain or understand. For anyone who has had a similar diagnosis or had a family member affected, no explanation is necessary. For those who haven’t no explanation will ever be truly sufficient to explain the feelings you go through. The financial impact of cancer is however far easier to understand, Macmillan cancer

support published a report a few years ago identifying that 80% of cancer patients (across all cancers) are £500 per month worse off as a result of the disease. If you haven’t been in that situation you can only really imagine the impact of learning you have months left to live and suddenly realising your family will be financially worse off as a result. This is the point at which the Trust steps in to help these families. We are a pure support charity, we don’t fund research and only focus on supporting those directly affected by the disease in an immediate way. The concerns and worries of the people who we support vary but most of them are what you yourself might feel in the circumstances. Usually we are supporting parents trying to limit the impact of the disease on their children and partners trying to limit the impact on the person who they have chosen to share their life with. For many of the people we support their concerns are the absolute basics of life, for many others their concern isn’t for

Heating Bills

For most of our beneficiaries forced bed rest and increased sensitivity to the cold after chemotherapy lead to having increased heating costs, the Trust regularly helps beneficiaries with payments towards heating bills allowing them the simple dignity of staying comfortable in their own homes.

Bedroom Essentials

The forced bedrest following chemotherapy often leads people to realise that their mattresses and bedding are not up to the job of keeping them comfortable when they are spending whole days in bed. We often purchase new mattresses for our beneficiaries to ensure that they can be as comfortable as possible.

Kitchen Essentials

Because of the financial hardships brought about by their cancer many of our beneficiaries are unable to make necessary purchases around the house. This has included people being unable to replace broken cookers and fridge freezers leading them to go without until the Trust has been able to step in and buy them replacements.

Transport

An easy no-cook cheesecake that's dairy-free and gluten-free with just a little agave syrup to sweeten. A lusciously lemony vegan dessert the family will love

Serves 12

30g coconut oil, plus extra for greasing 100g blanched almonds 100g soft pitted dates 300g cashew nuts 2 1/2 tbsp agave syrup 150ml almond milk 2 lemons, zested and juiced

Method 1.

Put the cashews in a large bowl, pour over boiling water and leave to soak for 1 hour. Meanwhile, blitz the ingredients for the base with a pinch of salt (oil, almonds and dates). Press the mix into the base and pop in the fridge to set for about 30 minutes.

2. Drain the cashews and tip into the cleaned out food processor. Add all the remaining topping ingredients, reserving a quarter of the lemon zest in damp kitchen paper to serve. Then blitz until smooth. Spoon onto the base and put in the fridge to set completely (about 2 hours). Just before serving, scatter over the reserved lemon zest.

Men’s Health Week 2017

Mens Health Week will run from the 12th of June to the 18th, and this year’s theme is beating belly fat! Belly fat is more dangerous than fat stored elsewhere in the body and men are far more susceptible than women. So men, time to get those tape measures out!

W

e all know that men and women carry their weight differently, with women tending to develop fat around their hips, thighs and buttocks; whereas men watch the inches grow around their abdomens. Unfortunately, not all fat is created equally, and a thicker waist is far more dangerous than weight stored elsewhere on the body. An inflated belly is generally due to an overabundance of visceral fat, and unlike its subcutaneous (under the skin) counterpart, is hazardous to internal organs by provoking inflammatory pathways, signalling molecules that interfere with the body’s normal hormonal functions. Fat cells are more than extra calories stored away; they have a huge impact on the everyday function of the human body, and when stored viscerally, this can cause a host of unpleasant symptoms including high blood pressure, gall stones, and reproductive issues. So what causes belly fat? Obviously balancing the calories you eat has a massive impact on your weight. If you eat too much and exercise too little- you’re likely to pack on excess pounds. However, age does play a role too. As you age, you lose muscle,

even more so if you’re not physically active. This decrease in muscle mass causes your body to not use up calories the way it should. This can make it more challenging to maintain a healthy weight.

According to the 2015- 2020 Dietary guidelines, men in their 50’s need about 200 calories less than they would do in their 30’s due to this muscle loss There are five main health risks that occur more commonly in individuals with high levels of visceral fat, including increased inflammation, higher risks of diabetes, heart disease and strokes, and an increased chance of suffering from poor mental health.

Inflammation

One of the biggest concerns for those who have high levels of visceral fat is inflammation. Inflammation is the root to many diseases, and is linked with various conditions such as cognitive decline, arthritis, diabetes and more. Visceral fat produces inflammatory molecules that are filtered through to the liver, leading to greater levels of inflammations and

hormone-disruption. Visceral fat itself can also become inflamed, causing a series of autoimmune reactions.

Diabetes

Visceral fat is also has a large role in insulin resistance, resulting in a heightened risk of diabetes. Almost 90% of individuals suffering from type 2 Diabetes are overweight or obese. Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented through simple lifestyle changes, including exercise and weight management through diet.

General Health Check

A good indicator of general health is your body mass index (bmi). Medical professionals utilise your bmi to determine your height to weight ratio, indicating whether you are underweight, healthy, overweight or obese. There are a variety of bmi calculators online, including on the NHS website to help you discern whether you are at risk. However, this is ineffective for men who lead active lives or regularly work out, as bmi doesn’t take into muscle mass. If measuring your bmi seems unreliable due to muscle mass, another good indicator whether your waist size more than 40 inches.

DETERMINING YOUR BELLY SIZE & CUTTING THE FAT

Stand and place a tape measure around your bare stomach, just above your hip bone.

2.

Pull the tape measure until it fits snugly around you but doesn’t push into your skin. Make sure it is level.

3.

Relax, exhale and measure your waist, remember to resist the urge to suck in your stomach!

For men, a waist measurement of more than 40 inches (102 centimeters) indicates an unhealthy concentration of belly fat and a greater risk of health problems. To help battle the bulge, a series of small, simple changes can really have a profound effect on overall health and wellbeing.

Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet is key to any kind of weight loss, with emphasis on plant based foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Lean sources of protein are also a good choice- such as fish and low fat dairy products. The main aim is to take in less calories than you burn off during excercisehence leading to weight loss.

Portion Control

The next simple change is to control portion sizes. Even when you’re making healthy choices, the calories can add up. A good way to monitor this is using your hands as a personalized portion indicator. This may sound strange, but it is a quick and easy way to ensure you are eating right. For men, it is recommended that you use your palm to determine your protein portions, your first to determine your veggie portions, your cupped hand to determine your carb portions and your thumb to determine your fat portions. For men, two of each is recommended. Of course, this is just a starting point and should be tailored to you.

Reduce Alcohol Intake

Drinking excess alcohol can cause you to gain belly fat — the beer belly. However, beer alone isn’t to blame. Drinking too much alcohol of any kind can increase belly fat, because alcohol contains calories. Although some research suggests wine might be an exception, if you drink alcohol, do so only in moderation. For men age 65 and younger, moderation means up to two drinks a day. For men older than age 65, it means up to one drink a day. The less you drink the fewer calories you’ll consume and the less likely you’ll be to gain belly fat. Similarly to the above, replacing sugary beverages also aids in losing the belly fat. Replacing these for ice cold water is the best option here. If that is too bland for you, why not try putting some fresh fruit such as lemon and lime to give it a citrusy taste. Drinking water increases the amount of calories you burn, and this is known as resting energy expenditure.

The importance of Excercise

Lastly, but probably the most important factor, is including physical activity in your daily routine. For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services

recommends moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking for at least 2 hours a week, or vigorous aerobic activity such as jogging or running for 75 minutes a week. The main rule is simple. The more weight you want to lose, the more you should move around and excercise. You can tone your abdominal muscles with sit ups or other targeted exercise, but spot reduction (losing fat in one specific area) is not possible, and doing endless amounts of crunches will not mean a reduction in belly fat! That being said, aerobic excercises like walking, running and swimming can have a profound effect on belly fat and overall weight loss. This is because visceral fat responds to the same diet and exercise strategies that can help you shed excess pounds and lower your total body fat.

There is no doubt that losing stubborn belly fat takes effort and patience so why not start todayput on some running shoes, get out in the fresh air and do your bit to take part in Mens Health Week!

Ingredients

Serves 2

• 2 whole eggs and 3 egg whites • 1 red pepper, finely chopped • 2 spring onions • few slices of wafer thin ham • 25g reduced fat cheddar

Method 1.

Mix the eggs and egg whites with some seasoning and set aside. Heat the oil in a medium non-stick frying pan and cook the pepper for 3-4 mins. Throw in the spring onion and cook for 1 min more. Pour in the eggs and cook over a medium heat until almost completely set.

2. Sprinkle on the ham and chese and continue cooking until just set in the centre, or flash it under a hot grill if you like it more well done.

JUNE 2017 USE OF MOBILE PHONES WHILST DRIVING - PENALTIES HAVE INCREASED. It is illegal to use your mobile phone while driving or riding a motorcycle unless you have hands-free access such as: A Bluetooth set headset Voice command A dashboard holder The law also applies if you are stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic as your engine is still running. You can only use a handheld phone if you are safely parked or need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it is unsafe or impractical to stop. You can use hands-free phones if you don’t press any buttons, sat navs and two-way radios when you’re driving or riding, however if the police think you’re distracted and not in control of your vehicle you could still be stopped and penalized. You must stay in full control of your vehicle at all times. If you use a mobile while driving what can happen? The new laws came into effect on March 1 2017. You can now be fined £200 and receive 6 points on your license. New drivers could face losing their license. Motorists caught using their mobile twice or accruing 12 points on their license will face magistrates’ court, being disqualified and fines of up to £1,000. New drivers, within 2 years of passing their test, risk having their license revoked and lorry or bus drivers can be suspended if caught. If you are convicted of a driving offence the court will decide how long the disqualification will last 6 months, if you get 12 or more penalty points (endorsements) within 3 years 12 months, if you get a second disqualification within 3 years 2 years, if you get a third disqualification within 3 years If you’re disqualified for 56 days or more you will have to apply for a new license before driving again. You might also have to retake your driving test or take an extended driving test before getting your full license. So if you want to keep using your vehicle and avoid a £200 fine and 6 points on your license, program your sat nav before you set off. We would advise drivers to turn off their phones whilst driving or pull over and do not be distracted by the activities on your mobile phone. Nothing is so urgent that you need to put your life, or anyone else’s at risk.

ew service for grandparents worried about losing contact with their grandchildren

The Family Law Company has launched a new service to support grandparents who may need legal help to continue or restore contact with their grandchildren after a divorce, separation, death or family disputes. Every year, thousands of grandparents find themselves in a distressing situation where they are unable to see their grandchildren. Currently, grandparents do not have rights of contact with grandchildren and in some extreme cases, never see their grandchildren again after a break up. However, the Courts are increasingly aware of the beneficial role a grandparent plays in a child’s upbringing.

Solicitor Stephen Sowden heads up the Grandparents Service at The Family Law Company in Plymouth. He says that grandparents have much to offer to younger children. “They can have such an important role to play in a grandchild’s life; estrangement means these children are missing out on the knowledge and experience – as well as the friendship of an older generation.” The Family Law Company does not always advise legal action from the outset but looks at alternative ways that clients might engage with the mother or father. This means trying to resolve matters without resorting to Court action, through exploring other avenues to help open up communications between the parties involved. This is often enough to secure contact, but if it is not successful, the company guides clients through the legal process sensitively.

You Can’t Give More Than 100% and Some Advice for New Businesses By Mike LeGassick

A

s a Financial Lifestyle Planner, I am often asked for advice from business owners. It’s not because they see me as some sort of business guru, it’s because I speak to many business owners and discuss what challenges they are facing so, this month, I thought I would go a little off topic with a departure from the financial world and write about how much effort an individual can give and what all new business owners must go through to achieve their full potential.

There are two things I often hear about performance and preparing yourself which amuse me. They are commonly referred to in sport and I am sure you will have heard them said many times. The first one is when a commentator or interviewer will suggest that some individual needs to go away after a bad result to regroup. A team can regroup, but how on earth can individual regroup? The second one is my favourite and is mathematically impossible to achieve and that is to give more than 100% in any endeavour. I understand that these are just things people say, (I am going to give it 150%!) however, they do amuse me so let’s see what proposing to give more than 100% really represents; From a strictly mathematical viewpoint it goes like this: What must you do to give 100%? What does it mean to give MORE than 100%? Ever wonder about those people who say they are giving more than 100%? We have all been to those meetings where someone wants you to give more than 100%. So how about achieving a little more with 103%? Here’s a little mathematical formula that might help you answer these questions: If: A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S TUVWXYZ is represented as: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26, then: K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-E 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5 = 96% And H-A-R-D-W-O-R-K 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11 = 98% But, A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E 1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5 = 100% And, B-U-L-L-S-*-*-T 2+21+12+12+19+8+9+20 = 103%

And look how far a*** kissing will take you: A-*-*-E-K-I-S-S-I-N-G 1+18+19+5+11+9+19+19+9+14+7 = 131%! So, one can then conclude with mathematical certainty that: While knowledge and hard work will get you close, and attitude will almost certainly get you there, bulls**t and a*** kissing will put you way over the top! However, P-E-R-S-E-V-E-R-E-N-C-E 16+5+18+19+5+22+5+18+5+14+3+5 = 135% trumps the lot and will have the biggest effect on you becoming successful. So, the next time someone asks you to give more than 100% remember to tell them that you are not full of Bulls**t and you don’t do a*** Kissing! An Analogy for a New Business Start Up This is the best analogy for business success I’ve ever heard in my life (and I’ve heard many). I’m no pilot, but my understanding is that when you’re tearing down the runway right before takeoff, you need to push the throttle to 100% power. Only at 100% power can the plane leave the ground and get airborne. If you pull back the throttle to even 98%, you’ll never take off. If you keep it at 100%, get off the ground, but then back off the throttle even a little bit less than 100%, you’ll crash. You’ve got to keep the throttle at 100% until you get to cruising altitude. Once at cruising attitude, something very interesting happens. You can back the throttle down to not 95%, or 80%, but all the way down 10% or even 5%, and stay flying with no problem. Once you’re cruising along in the sky, the engine is barely working as compared to when it was taking off. Most people work hard at their businesses and careers. They take that throttle and blast it to 95% and keep it there. The problem is they never get off the ground.

They just keep chugging away at 95% power on the runway…forever. Just like a jumbo jet taking off, in business, you must give everything to get it off the ground. The smart people, the ones who want real success and long-term happiness in life, take that throttle and blast it up to just another 5%, to 100% and they keep it there for a few years. During those years, it’s a little painful. They’re out of balance. Other parts of their life slide or stay on pause. They get a little stressed and tired sometimes, but they persevere. However, after a few years, when their businesses are configured correctly, they can back off that throttle to just 10% or 5%, if they want, and cruise for the rest of their lives. They watch all the other people grinding away at 95% forever, while they’re chilling at 10% or less, receiving the same or even better financial results. They know that if those other people just cranked things up to 100% for a few years, they could join them in happiness. This is one of the major differences between those who succeed and those who do not. Where is your throttle set? Persistence, not genius, is the reason we know Einstein’s name. Amongst his other gifts, Einstein had one particularly useful character trait; persistency. “I might not be more skilled than other scientists,” he liked to say, “but I have the persistence of a mule.” If he built a house of cards and it came crashing down, young Einstein would exhale and start again, says biographer David Bodanis.
