City centre based Locksmith Paul Bushell, otherwise known as Sir Fix-A-Lock; offers a friendly and professional service to clients throughout Devon and Cornwall. Paul has an infectiously positive attitude towards life; and together with his loyal companion Lottie, he enjoys the day to day challenges that working in the Locksmith profession brings.
“It was all about getting stuck in and making the impossible, possible. That experience gives you determination and drive as a person”. Nearing the end of his 25 years of service, Paul started to consider the direction that his career path would take.
Whilst on the course, Paul became good friends with Chris Belcher- a Locksmithing legend and a famous role model within the industry.
“
“
Chris was key in helping Paul set up his business by training, mentoring and guiding him through the first three hectic years, as he juggled a full-time army career and a part-time business. At the time, Chris had retired from the day-today Locksmithing duties to focus on other aspects, and offered his client base to Paul once he had finished serving in the Forces. “It was mad! There were so many qualified Locksmiths out there and he chose me. I always wonder why Chris and his lovely wife Suzzie chose me”. Chris and Paul grew a valued friendship over a number of years and Paul explains that he had never met a better man. “Chris was the most exceptional human I had ever met. There was no one quite like him. He was kind, he was polite and he never, ever had a bad word to say about anyone. I couldn’t have asked for a better role model and a better mentor to solidify my knowledge in the industry”. Sadly, Chris Belcher passed away last year, leaving behind a legacy in the Locksmith world. With Chris’ guidance, Paul built up the business during his time in the Army- and when he left he took on Belcher’s client base. “He had some very high profile clients that trusted him to do their work-

some of them continue to use me to this day and I am very proud to carry that on”.
“
“
“
Having a chat with a friend, it was suggested to Paul that there was a gap in the market for a professional Locksmith in Plymouth- and so the seed was sewn. Paul signed himself up and funded himself through a 2 week Locksmithing course to learn the basics in the profession.
“
P
aul joined the Army when he was living in Northern Ireland, at just 16 years old. “Being in the forces gave me a skill set that could easily be transferred to business. I guess you don’t really realise at the time!” Honesty, integrity, discipline and hard work are all traits that Paul values.
Needing an identity- Paul set about creating a brand for his company. Sir-Fix-A-Lock is a clever play on words that fits perfectly with Paul’s personality and it doesn’t stop there! Guinevere- Paul’s steed, a black Volkswagen Transporter, serves as his mode of transport, and after a hard day’s work with his loyal companion- Yorkshire Terrier Lottie (Camelot-y!) he returns to his fully kitted out office ‘Camelock’based in the city Centre.
You’ve got to have a bit of fun. If you’re not enjoying what you do- move on. You have to find happiness somewhere and you are more likely to be successful when you do. People like happy people! Positivity is infectious.
Offering his professional services to customers throughout Devon and Cornwall- where his reputation certainly goes before him; Paul has expertise in non destructive entry, UPVc door and window repairs, key cutting services and master key suites. Sir Fix-A-Lock also specialises as a professional safe engineer. “Cracking safes is my niche in this particular area. Chris sent me off on a course in London where I could learn everything I needed to know- and I haven’t stopped learning since! With a safe, you have to have a plan. Some
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
can be opened in a matter of seconds, but you have to be prepared for certain types to take several hours. Planning is key when it comes to getting into a high security safe”. “A job has to be done properly or not at all. I pride myself on giving the best service I possibly can, so if I am not confident in a job on a safe- I will happily refer it to a higher grade safe engineer up country”.
“
Sir Fix-A-Lock has the most 5 star reviews for a Locksmith in the entire South West on the Trading Standards ‘Buy with Confidence’ scheme, from Swindon through South Wales, all the way down to Lands End. This is perhaps a reflection of his values- honesty, integrity, motivation and hard work.
Paul Bushell with Chris Belcher- a fun way to show the handover of clients!
“ “ “
It isn’t just his professional approach and positive attitude that brings Paul business. He firmly believes that customers have to have complete trust and confidence in himself and his abilities. “We have to put our money where our mouth is in terms of quality of product and service, and a lot of trust leans on genuine testimonials”. Sir Fix-A-Lock has been nominated for numerous awards, and has won a respectable amount. Paul doesn’t shy away from the fact that to be in the running, he self nominates to get himself, and his brand out there. “I’ve been nominated for a total of 12 awards, some I have been nominated for- and others I have nominated myself. You have got to be confident in your services, and put
yourself out there. If the judges didn’t think you deserved to be there- you wouldn’t be.
You’ve got to rise above, and constantly punch above your weight to get to where you want to be, always. After several years of hard graft and pure determination, Paul is finally in a place where his work life balance is starting to look a little healthier! In his spare time he enjoys listening to his favourite band, punk heroes Stiff Little Fingers. He even has the privilege of owning the bands previous drum kit- which he aptly named ‘Sir Drum-A-Lot!’ Sir Fix-A-Lock offers discounts to senior citizens and member of the HM Armed Forces, as well as NHS staff. Although he works long hours, Paul finds time to support local charities wherever he can. Having recently taken part in the
‘Plymouth Superheroes Black Tie Ball’- of course dressed up to the nines in his Sir Fix-A-Lock chainmail, himself and other Plymouth Business owners managed to raise over £7000 for local hip hop community interest group, Street Factory. Paul also prides himself on being an eco friendly business- selling his scrap metal rather than binning it, and donating the funds to local charities each time. “It’s important to me to give back to the community. Not just because it’s right- but because it makes you feel good about yourself. It’s a great feel good factor!” Paul sums up by stating that every job he takes on is a challenge, and that is what motivates him to succeed. “I love my life and it feels like I’m living in the Crystal Maze, solving puzzles for a living every single day! I am extremely lucky to love what I do”. Paul’s broad accent, infectious happiness, drive and determination (and of course little Lottie) all go towards his popularity with customers- and as a result he has gained a fantastic reputation within the Locksmith industry in the South West. If you would like to find out more, you can contact Paul on the details below.

T
he Arctic, oceans, polar bears and single-use plastics have all been brought together in a new family activity this winter in Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City. 20 polar bear cubs have been set loose across Plymouth’s waterfront, each with a bear fact that sends a serious message on how single-use plastics are affecting the oceans and the Arctic habitat. With messaging supported by the WWF, the polar bear cubs have been introduced by the business-driven Plymouth Waterfront Partnership (PWP) and their campaign partner the National Marine Aquarium.
For 14 weeks, between 25 November and 3 March, the Polar Bear Explorer will see the cubs hiding at locations across Sutton Harbour, the Barbican, Hoe, Millbay and Royal William Yard, in shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels along the waterfront. Offering a new experience in Britain’s Ocean City, families are encouraged to become Polar Bear Explorers and find each of the 20 cubs. Along the way families will learn about the oceans, polar bears and how they can help to protect their natural Arctic home.
Everyone who finds all 20 polar bear cubs and completes their Explorer entry form will receive a Polar Bear Explorer certificate and will be entered into a draw to win great prizes, including family tickets for the National Marine Aquarium and Polar Bear adoption through WWF. Sarah Gibson, Waterfront Manager and Chief Executive of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, said “Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City is a leading waterfront city in the UK, and every year our business community creates trails to provide free family fun and encourage greater footfall. Plymouth is leading the way on efforts to reduce single-use plastics so this year we selected this topical subject to help to encourage our community to make more changes at home, at school and in the workplace. “Shockingly, we’re told that, due to micro plastics, the Arctic is one of the most polluted locations on Earth and with the immense appeal of Polar Bears we wanted to engage families and especially children in learning more about what we can all do to make a difference. “We’re delighted to have partnered with the National Marine Aquarium and to have received support from the WWF and soon we’ll be working with schools.
This trail is fun, free and educational, so we’re now looking forward to seeing how many families will take up the challenge to become Polar Bear Explorers!” Nicola Bridge, Head of Conservation Education and Communication & Marketing at the National Marine Aquarium, said: “The NMA is proud to be a campaign partner of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership’s Polar Bear Explorer trail this winter. We hope to see this engaging family initiative help draw visitors to Plymouth’s Waterfront whilst promoting the importance of caring for our Oceans. “The NMA’s mission is connecting people with our Oceans and promoting pro-Ocean behaviour. We believe that initiatives like the Polar Bear Explorer trail will help to highlight the importance of the marine environment to everyone.” Polar Bear Explorer maps will be available to collect from the Barbican Tourist Information Centre, National Marine Aquarium, Bistrot Pierre at Royal William Yard and Plymouth City Centre Library. Learning and fun rolled into one!
I
nitially starting as a humble lifestyle business, Gym Bubbas has gone from strength to strength and has very quickly turned into a highly rated company for local families. Kate and Wayne Child- proud owners of Gym Bubbas, first met in London whilst Wayne was working as an Estate Agent and Kate; after a 6 month travelling stint- was working for a children’s gym in the city.
creating dynamic and unique lesson plans for her gymnastics classes.
After getting married and welcoming their son Austin to the family, Kate and Wayne made the move back to Plymouth. Kate explains that owning a gym had always been a pipedream of hers, but after the couple came into an unexpected windfallthat dream was soon put into action.
For Wayne, this was a whole new way of life. Originally a high-flying estate agent in London, he gave it all up to help Kate build her business, holding a partner role but soon becoming a fully-fledged gymnastics teacher and instructor.
In 2011, Kate started up Gym Bubbas and was based out of a hall at The Devonshire for a few days a week. Building on her experience in London, Kate got stuck in
“
“
“The initial aim was for a lifestyle business; I would buy a few pieces of equipment and hire out a hall for a few days a week. I absolutely loved my job in London, and that was the inspiration behind starting up a gym for babies and children down here in Plymouth”.
“I knew what I wanted to do and how I should do it. I absolutely loved the lesson planning side of the business and it came naturally to me. The side that I didn’t quite know was how to market myself- how to create a brand around what I was offering and that was where Wayne came in!”
Wayne thinks big. He always pushed the business to be bigger and better and he always had this vision right from the start of where it could be, where it could go. Within a year of being at The Devonshire, Kate acquired a loyal clientele of over 100 children through organic growth and word of mouth. A change of ownership soon meant that Kate and Wayne needed to find a new
space for Gym Bubbas- and Morgan’s Gym, located at Christian Mill Business Park- was their next stop in late 2012. “Looking back at this time period- it was absolutely mad. We were both up at 6am every day to get our parking space, we would do some marketing for a few hours, unload the equipment from the back of the van and I would then teach classes all day. Wayne would meet me and we would load the van back up- if it was raining we would wipe down all the equipment, ready to do it all again tomorrow!” This hard work certainly paid off, as Gym Bubbas soon grew to over 250 clientsreaching capacity for the hired space at Morgan’s. Kate and Wayne took a leap of faith and decided to make the move to their current premises, a purpose built gym at Drake Mill Business Park. “The whole concept was thought up in our two up two down house in Ivybridge- we just decided to go for it!” The couple put everything they had into getting the space ready for their opening day in September 2013 and the rest as they say is history.
“
“

Each of the seven classes, which are split according to age, see highlytrained instructors use a variety of individual and group activities to develop flexibility, strength, balance and coordination, which Kate says is vital at a young age.
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
Starting from as young as 4 months- the classes encourage parent participation until 3 years, where toddlers are allowed to take part in the activities in instructor led classes. Kate and Wayne both stress the importance of having fun at Gym Bubbas- whilst learning valuable life skills such as listening to instructions and understanding how to take turns. Both Wayne and Kate have the core qualifications needed to teach the gymnastics classes- and love every second. “We currently have a tight knit team of 12 instructors- we are like one big family! Everybody here loves what they do and they’re all so great with the kidsyou can’t teach that”.
“
The most rewarding aspect for all of us is that it is not a competitive environment at all; each child is encouraged to move at their own pace. One small achievement for one child may be huge for another and we love to celebrate every little milestone
“
Often, the couple see children develop throughout the years that they teach and remember when they were first learning to walk; now they see them flourish into completing routines on the bar and doing their first handstands and cartwheels.
Perhaps what sets Gym Bubbas one step ahead is the genuine passion for what they do- and wanting each and every child to absolutely love their time in the gym. Kate explains that they don’t want their clients to feel like they are just a number- and go the extra mile to remember the small details. “We have the same instructors teaching the same class each week, so this really helps the children build a meaningful relationship. We also put particular emphasis on remembering the small details in their personal lives that really make a difference; asking how mums holiday went, asking how granddad is after his operation; showing genuine interest outside of Gym Bubbas is crucial for us”. Looking to the future, exciting plans are already underway for this busy local business, as they have recently acquired a second purpose built gym in Match Mill- Plympton. Kate explains that they have very quickly hit capacity where they are based now- so the need was there to expand.
“
Our second purpose built gym is due to open at Match Mill in Plympton in January. We are very excited for this to progress and we are on the lookout for dedicated and enthusiastic staff members to take on the Gym Bubbas ethos
“
Since the company’s inception in 2011, it’s fair to say that Kate and Wayne haven’t really stopped. Working 60, sometimes 80 hour weeks to get the
dream up and running- Kate tells us that only now do they feel like they can apply the brakes a little. “We will never take a back seat because it’s not in our nature. It’s certainly been a whirlwind to get to where we are today and we are both extremely proud of what we have achieved. The business has grown substantially and there are a number of different avenues we could explore for future growth- who knows what the future may bring!” Gym Bubbas offer classes from 4 months to 11 years, and offer a free initial trial to see if it’s for you. They also offer hasslefree party packages for children aged 1-10 years. Children can join at any point during the term, so get in contact with a member of the team to find out more.

West Country Financial based in Tavistock, will be celebrating their 20th anniversary in December of this year. The well established team of Financial Advisors have a combined experience of over 200 years- and are proud to be offering their clients a personal and professional service throughout Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and further afield. We sit down with some of the team to find out a little more.
Principal - Mike James, has worked in the financial industry for over 40 years. Mike initially made the leap of faith to start his own business, because he wanted to build a team of advisors and essentially offer a ‘one stop shop’ for financial advice. “When I was younger I worked in men’s outfitting. I made the move to the financial industry to better my career. I loved dealing with people, and I liked the idea of trying to advise something that you couldn’t physically touch - an intangible so to speak”. The challenge of advising on something that could potentially make people’s lives better such as a pension plan or an
investment opportunity appealed to Mike, so at the age of 22 he started his journey that would eventually lead to him working for two major insurance companies, as a Senior Consultant across the South West. Wanting to create a more client focused business, Mike left the company he was working for at the time and West Country Financial was established in 1998. “The hardest part was the fact I had no track record on running my own business, so proving to people that you are someone to rely on was a challenge, but I had my previous experience to back me up”. West Country Financial quickly grew from strength to strength, adding half a dozen new staff members in its first year of operation. Fast forward to today, the business now consists of over 15 staff members who can confidently and professionally deliver valuable advice on a vast range of subjects.

“People need financial protection. Once you’ve explained to somebody how vulnerable they are regarding life cover or critical illness cover for example- there is going to be a shortfall should something go wrong. This then becomes a need, and people don’t identify that until they come and speak to us” explains Vicki. Vicki Swann specialises in Financial Tax Planning and Final Salary Transfers- a specialist pension service. Vicki is a Chartered Financial Planner and a Fellow of the Personal Finance Society- which gives her clients the reassurance they are being advised by someone who has a proven commitment to the ethical standards set by the industry. “The government has stepped up to what is fast becoming a crisis for the country in terms of funding retirement” Says Vicki. “The Auto Enrolment Schemes which are effectively forcing people to pay into a retirement fund can only be a good thing, but what happens when you are self employed, or in a situation where you can’t be auto enrolled?” Vicki and John explain that the team at West Country Financial have access to

West Country financial can help you plan for the future, to not only hope to live comfortably at retirement- but to be confident knowing it will happen. Whatever your financial needs, Westcountry Financial are here to help you make an informed choice, and they welcome all enquiries- from topping up your ISA this current tax year, to reviewing your pension to make sure it’s on track to support you during your retirement. Perhaps you are asset rich and cash poor, it’s possible to take advantage of these assets to produce a regular income and maintain your lifestyle. “Maybe, in the New Year- as your family grows you need to invest in a larger property, or all the kids have left home and you need to downsize. The office access is disability friendly and all the staff have been trained to be “Dementia Aware”. Looking to the future, Mike explains that he is definitely looking to expand the team, with the focus being on the younger generation. “The average age of an advisor is currently 57 years old. There is a real issue in the industry when it comes to employing young people, so the focus going forward would be to ‘grow our own”. “The main attributes we look for in a potential employee is to be trustworthy and have quality knowledge. Perseverance in a sometimes challenging training process shows character and that would be the kind of person that would fit in well here” explains Mike. P LYM O U T H Alan Witt serves as your personal, Plymouth based independent travel advisor, as part of Not Just Travel. With over 35 years experience in the travel and tourism industry, Alan strives to deliver a personal and bespoke service to each and every one of his clients. We catch up with Alan to find out a little more. bit of a shot in the dark for me really, but I decided to go for it. I had no idea if it was for me, as I had no experience but I ended up loving it”.
Focussing on a personalised service with access to great holiday packages and deals- Not Just Travel is one of the UK’s leading travel companies, not on the high street.
Alan stayed with Thomas Cook for a number of years, gaining valuable experience and moving all over the South East in different branches. In the early 90’s, Alan met his wife- Suzanne and the pair made the move down to Plymouth to start a family.
Alan has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to tourism, having studied in College at a young age. “I went to Bournemouth College and I absolutely loved my course- I was the only male in a group of 25 females!”
“I had never been to Plymouth in my life, but Thomas Cook offered me a relocation package so myself and Suzanne worked a few logistical challenges out and eventually we both made the move to the South West”.
“
After working for Thomas Cook for just over 25 years, Alan decided that it was time for a change; and after a conversation with a family memberhe took a leap of faith and started a brand new position for their start up company. Little did he know that this would soon become one of the biggest independent travel agents in the UK.
“
Not long after completing his course, Alan was offered a position at Thomas Cook in Kent- at the age of 18. “It was a
“My cousin had this agency that he was looking to franchise; he offered it to me as a sort of ‘guinea pig’ or test franchisee! I was already in the industry and had years of experience behind me, I was looking for a change of direction- so it was perfect really”. Not Just Travel grew from strength to strength, and after the initial efforts- the company now has over 400 franchises across the UK. Not Just Travel has built its success on the basis that each and every one of their ambassadors are ‘fanatical about holidays’ meaning that each individual is passionate about the destinations they are offering to clients.

This is certainly the case for Alan, who puts a passion for what he does before anything else in business.

N
ot Just Travel has been established for over 12 years, and Alan Witt- one of the first franchisees to the company, has seen it grow throughout the years to now have over 400 ambassadors across the UK.
There is no better thing to sell than a holiday. You are selling an intangible. It’s not like a car that you can test drive- you are selling a dream, and that’s a big responsibility. Alan joined Not Just Travel in 2009, and he explains that it has been great to see his individual client base, and the overall company- grow over the years. “When I first started, I did have a bit of a head start because I took some clients over from Thomas Cook. I also regularly take part in local networking events which is a great way to get yourself and your services out there”. “The majority of my customers come through word of mouth, or repeat business if they’ve been using me to book their holidays for quite a while. It’s great to build that relationship with people. It sometimes even gets to the point where the customer doesn’t even say where they’d like to go, they trust you enough to make a recommendation, because they know that you know exactly what they like!” “At Not Just Travel we are fully independent which gives us access to a vast range of trade suppliers that the general public cannot access. We work with over 450 leading brand and tour operators. That means we give you the best choice of holiday possible, at prices that you may not find elsewhere”. “Because I don’t have expensive High Street premises, I can keep my overheads low, and share great prices with my

Someone once said to me, you’ll never be a millionaire working in travel, but you’ll be made to feel like one a few times
Alan has a wealth of experience selling specialist holidays to destinations like Lapland and the Maldives- both of which are very popular choices at the moment.
“
“
Not Just Travel are ATOL and ABTA bonded, meaning you can be confident knowing you have 100% financial protection Alan explains that it is important to take time with his customers, to unravel exactly what they want from their holiday. “It is usually one of the biggest financial spends someone will have in their year, unless they are buying a car or moving house”. “The most rewarding aspect for me is knowing I’ve done a good job for someone. When they come back from a holiday that we spent time planning- the smiles on their faces say it all and there’s no better feeling than that”.
“Most big companies push cheap deals on social media, and you’re sucked into thinking that it’s perfect for you. If you were to break it down, perhaps actually it isn’t. At Not Just Travel I have access to a number of smaller, independent and extremely niche travel companies- who really specialise in what they do. That way we can really take time to ensure the holiday has everything you need”. Alan explains that over the years he has noticed a number of shifts in the travel industry, and a rise in the popularity of cruises and river cruises. “Cruises were known predominately for the older generations, but now a lot more young people are being attracted to this type of holiday”. Similarly, River Cruises have had a massive growth in popularity in recent years. “Unlike ocean liners- they are a

Unlike large ocean liners where you may have to get a tender to the port and travelling can take a while. It’s an exciting way to experience new cities”. It is clear that Alan absolutely loves what he does, and with 35 years experience under his belt, he explains that he is known as the dinosaur of Not Just Travel! Looking to the future, Alan explains that he would love to expand his franchise and perhaps have a colleague to come on board and help him grow. “There is a finite point where you can only do so much on your own. I would love to have someone come on board with the same mentality as me to share the workload”.

customers. Booking on-line definitely isn’t always the cheapest option!”
“That quote is definitely true for me. I’ve had some fantastic clients over the years- and also I’ve had some great experiences myself, including flying on Concorde which was a lifelong ambition for me! As a travel Advisor I’ve been all over the world so I can personally give advice on a lot of countries. My absolute favourite has to be the Seychelles- it is unlike anywhere else in the world! It’s so laid back and stunningly beautiful- the beaches are something else”.

I don’t ever see myself wanting to stop because I enjoy it too much. I am extremely lucky in that respect and I don’t take it for granted. I kind of fell into the industry and ended up loving it. If you want to know more about what Alan can offer, please get in contact on the details below.

Still Window Cleaning Ltd are the definition of a family business. Fred Still started out with a bucket & a sponge in 1982 & throughout the years the business has grown to offer its pro-fessional window cleaning services to over 700 loyal clients. Father and daughter team, Fred & Emma Still have worked tirelessly to get the company where it is today. We chat with them to learn more about the journey.

years, growing his business organically and gaining valuable customers. “The physical side of it was great for me, it was rehabilitating for my back & I genuinely enjoyed being out and about. I used to come home absolutely knackered of course, that part never got any easier!”
After this I moved into marketing for large companies such as BT and Yell”.
“I was 27 years old with three children, it took me over 6 months to recover and it was certainly a difficult time in my life not being able to work and provide for my family. I tried to do whatever I could to get by and after a recommendation from a friend, the idea of becoming a window cleaner was put in front of me”.
Fast forward to 2006 - Fred now has a van & is trading as ‘Still Cleaning’. His company was one of the first in the area to be fully kitted out with a ‘Pure water’ system, an innovative way of window cleaning that filtered out any natural minerals and solids, resulting in crystal clear glass once dried.
Emma also has valuable experience in health & safety and employment law. After a number of jobs in a short period of time following redundancy from Yell, Emma realised that the employment market in the South West at the time wasn’t great so she decided to spend her time helping Fred build his business.
Fred found that he could safely get up and down a ladder without any repercussions to his back injury, and he started out with a few local window cleaning jobs to get by. “People just knew me as Fred the window cleaner! I had no branding, no business cards - just me, a bucket, a sponge & a ladder”.
After continuing to improve his services over time - Fred enlisted the help of family members to go one step further. Together with his daughter Emma, the pair have worked tirelessly to build Still Window Cleaning Ltd to the success it is today.
“As children, we all helped dad out to get a bit of pocket money, window cleaning has always been in our family. Dad and I sat down one day over lunch and at this point I’d been assisting in the com-pany quite a bit. Coming from a business background I thought well, where is dad going with this?”
“
Putting their heads together, the pair realised they had great foundations to build the business into something bigger. Emma became full time and in May 2016 a second van was added to the fleet.
Fred explains that it was a huge change for him, but it was the best thing they could have done. “Running a business on your own, the way you’ve been used to for 34 years & then having it all change was definitely tough. The first 6 months were definitely an adjustment period, but seeing the business now, I am so glad we put in the hard work”.
“
“
Working his way through all four seasons, Fred explains that he carried on like this for
“Before I joined dad, I chose the corporate life and worked within the financial services industry for 15 years.
“
“
“
The winter was a particularly interesting time for Fred, as he recalls having to physically chip away ice as the bucket froze to the floor of his van due to having no heating!
Fred & his wife have five children in total, the eldest being Business Partner & Director - Emma Still. Emma joined Fred in February 2016, initially to help him out part time.

Still Window Cleaning offer both commercial and domestic window cleaning services as well as fascias, uPVC, conservatories & gutter vacuuming. Fred explains that technology within the industry is always moving forward making their job easier and more effective. “Take Gutter Vacuuming for example, most jobs need scaffolding due to health and safety. We can overcome this as we can reach four storeys high and remotely clean the interior of the gutter, preventing damage to the property and overflowing issues. No scaffolding, no ladders”. In January 2017, Still Window Cleaning introduced an app on their individual phones to keep track of their jobs. This was a world away from Fred’s ‘old school’ pen & paper diary but he admits it has been a life saver since the company has grown in popularity. “This not only makes it easier for us but for our clients too. They know exactly when we are going to turn up for the next job”. Fred explains that they have also updated their payment system,
Jimmy, Fred & Emma
which means a more efficient service for everyone.
out vans, 3 full time employees and over 700 loyal clients.
“There is no confusion over missed payments & it reduces the need for money chasing if the client isn’t home at the time. We are becoming a cashless society, sometimes the client has paid before we’ve even finished the job! Each invoice is itemised so we both know the exact cost breakdown and the account balance”.
Emma explains that due to the ever growing demand, herself, Fred & Jimmy are looking to recruit another member to their passionate and hardworking team. “We want to ensure we retain a per sonal and manageable service but we would also like to expand our reach”.
“
We are very customer focussed & being productive and organised is as much for our clients benefits as it is ours. We are completely transparent when it comes to our costs and we strive to offer a professional, reliable service that you can trust.
“
Due to growing demand, Fred and Emma employed family friend, Jimmy in June of this year. Jimmy explains that he feels incredibly lucky to be able to call himself a part of the Still Window Cleaning team and it’s great to learn invaluable skills from someone like Fred. “Both Fred and Emma are amazing bosses and this is the first time I’ve been proud of my job. The best part is working for Fred and seeing his passion even after 35 years. He has so much knowledge and is willing to teach others. You couldn’t ask for a better mentor he’s so relaxed and patient and makes you feel at ease with his friendly banter!” In March 2016, Still Window Cleaning had a respectable 226 customers on their books. Now, due to the huge amount of hard work they have put into the family business, they have a fleet of 3 fully kitted
Still Window Cleaning cover a large area encompassing westward to Saltash, eastward to Exmouth, as far north as Okehampton & as far south to the coastline inclusively. Key areas are Plymouth, Totnes, Dartmouth, the South Hams, Tavistock and the Moors. They are looking to take on more customers along with an additional team member and are happy to train up anyone who feels they are right for the job! Looking to the future, Fred explains that Emma coming on board has taken a weight off his shoulders & he would eventually love to taper down his involvement and hand the business over. “Emma has given me a great relief. She has a great grounding, a path has to be followed to make a successful business and she knows exactly how to do that. I have absolute confidence that she will continue growing the business from strength to strength”. C
hristmas is an exciting time of year. Splurging on gifts you know your friends and family will love, laying out a feast for Christmas Day; it’s all just part of the festive season. Unfortunately, not everyone counts down to the big day in earnest, as many people across the city rely on food banks to feed themselves and their families for a number of reasons. We want to spread awareness of the amazing work that the food banks undertake, and to let you know what you can do to help because after all, it is the season of giving. Plymouth Food Bank is part of the Trussell Trust; a network of 428 food banks across the UK, working to tackle hunger and poverty in communities. As a network, their aim is to see more people helped out of crisis and to reduce the need for food banks in the future.
Last year, Plymouth Food Bank donated 8,791 three-day emergency food supplies to people in need of their services. The Plymouth Food Bank operates out of the Oasis Project, a community hub that offers personal support and development opportunities to the people of Plymouth. They don’t just offer food- Oasis Project can help you with a prospective job Images: Grace Clarke Photography
interview by providing suitable clothing, and can also offer training and education through a programme of courses. Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy, to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with food banks helping to prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems. Schools, churches, businesses and individuals can all donate food directly to the food bank, or through designated donation points in supermarkets around the city. Large collections also take place at fundraisers and charity events. Volunteers then sort and check that all of the food donated is non perishable and in date, and this is then packed into boxes ready to be given to people in need.
Donating items is incredibly easy- you don’t even have to buy them specifically. Take a look in you cupboards and chances are you will have suitable items that have been sat there for a while! As long as they are in date; tinned soup, tinned fruit and any other non-perishable goods can be placed in a donation point on your next weekly shop at your local supermarket.
People can find themselves in crisis at any point in their lives. In order to ensure the right people are getting the appropriate help, food bank vouchers are issued by local authorities such as citizen’s advice, health visitors and children’s centres. Basic details will be taken, and depending on your circumstances you will be offered the appropriate guidance needed to support you.
How about after the festive season is over, guaranteed every household has an influx of leftover items that will sit in the cupboards for another year. Put them to good use, and donate them to someone in greater need in the colder months of the new year.
as the festive season approaches, what can you do to help? Plymouth Food Bank are in desperate need of items such as long life fruit juice, tea, biscuits, UHT milk and breakfast cereals. They have plenty of pasta and baked beans in stock at the moment so these are not a priority.
If you wish to send special Christmas items such as mince pies, chocolates or puddings then please donate these no later than December 13th Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts

Choosing Your Christmas Tree D
o you wait until just a few days before Christmas to sort out your tree? Or do you give-in to the kid’s pleading and find yourself buying a tree on the first day of December? Regardless of your traditions, buying a Christmas tree takes a bit of knowledge and planning.
Norwegian Spruce
Nordmann Fir
Traditional favourite in the UK
Most popular tree in the UK
Tendency to drop needles so best bought closer to Christmas
Holds onto its needles well Lasts a long time if looked after correctly
Bushy and classically-shaped
You could go for one which is more expensive but holds onto its needles, or save a bit of cash (probably a good idea for most of us at this time of year) and carefully look after one which might not last so long. If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at our suggestions and locate your nearest seller. Then wrap up warm and head outside to take your pick!
Long, soft, dark green needles
Strong pine scent
Blue Spruce
Fraser Fir Highly desired due to its stunning blue/green needles
Classic shape, but slimmer than the more popular varieties above
Needles can be fairly sharp, so not suitable in a home with small children or pets
Holds needles well Citrus-scented Can be hard to find as it’s difficult to grow
Pot-grown
Where to Buy: Santa Trees Lodge Hill, Liskeard, PL14 2EL
Sconner Wood Polbathic, PL11 3ET
Qualitree Cuddyford, Rew Road, Ashburton, TQ13 7EN

Christmas Tree Tips:
Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts
•
When choosing a tree, pick it up a few inches from the floor and drop it onto its stump. A freshly cut tree should hold onto its needles.
•
Keep cut trees topped up with water to stop them from drying it. Some trees will need watering daily.
•
Although a Nowegian Spruce is known to drop its needles, a good quality, well-watered one should last as long as its more expensive rival.
•
Before taking your tree indoors, cut about half an inch off the butt to open up its pores.
