Editor's Note... Hello! The summer holidays are now in full swing and it’s the perfect time to enjoy the sunshine - it certainly looks like it’s here to stay! Sophie introduced me in last month’s issue, and now that I’ve settled into my new role as Editor at OM, I’m happy to finally be able to introduce myself to you - nice to meet you and I hope you enjoy reading this issue of OM! We’ve had a busy month with a few business profiles in store for you. Our team had a brilliant day out at Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre to find out about their history and what their plans are for the summer. We also caught up with Plymouth Citybus who have launched their new Ocean City Sights bus; be sure not to miss out on the sights of Plymouth throughout the summer holidays! Ivybridge Accountants gave us an insight into what it’s like to be a local accountant in Plymouth and their new expansion venture. We also have a brilliant article about stress written by Jonathan Cook from Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic! I’ve had an amazing start at OM! It’s been lovely getting to know everyone and I look forward to what the future here brings! Enjoy this issue and have a great month!

NATIONAL DAYS AUGUST 2019 A guide to National and International days in August!
H
ere in the UK, we don’t need a reason to pop open the bubbly or throw a party! We love a good celebration, whether you’ve had a great day at work and decided to treat yourself to a glass of wine (maybe two...) or you’re having a birthday bash to celebrate big 50! This August there are plenty of reasons to celebrate with loads of national and international days that you can get involved with and celebrate to your heart’s content! INTERNATIONAL BEER DAY The 2nd of August brings a great start to the month with International Beer Day giving us all a reason to celebrate! Get on down to the pub with the family or friends for a pint, or two... or three! It started in the USA in 2007 and is now a worldwide celebration spanning 207 cities, 80 countries and 6 continents. Specifically, International Beer Day has three declared purposes: To gather with friends and enjoy the taste of beer. To celebrate those responsible for brewing and serving beer and to unite the world under the banner of beer, by celebrating the beers of all nations together on a single day.
playday Play is an essential part of every child’s life. The 7th of August is Playday and is dedicated to children playing! Playday is the national day for play, traditionally held on the first Wednesday in August. It is the biggest play sector event in the UK, and possibly Europe! As well as a celebration of children’s right to play, Playday is a campaign that highlights the importance of play in children’s lives. To celebrate Playday, children and young people get out and play at hundreds of community events across the UK. You can celebrate Playday any way you want this August, go to the park, take a trip to the beach or throw a party for your child and all of their friends to celebrate this amazing day!
INTERNATIONAL CAT DAY
CYCLE TO WORK DAY Cats aren’t all we’re celebrating on August 8th. This day also represents Cycle to Work Day across the UK. Cycle to Work Day is the UK’s biggest cycle commuting event. Every year since 2012 thousands of enthusiastic riders have hit the streets to celebrate everyday cycling. All you need to take part is a bike – new or old – and the desire to ride. You can go solo or be the change your workplace needs and organise an event for you and your colleagues. You can help the environment and get fit at the same time! Whatever you do, however far your ride – have fun!
For all of you cat lovers out there, the 8th of August is your day to celebrate your little furballs! International Cat Day is a day to raise awareness for our feline friends and learn about ways we can help and protect them. If you have a cat, go and treat them to some catnip and share your favourite photos and videos of them on social media for the rest of the world to admire. Or if you don’t own a cat, head on down to Gables or Woodside to see what you’re missing out on - you might even give a cat their forever home!

WORLD ELEPHANT DAY
WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY
World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12th, dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world’s elephants. The goal of World Elephant Day is to create awareness of the urgent plight of African and Asian elephants and to share knowledge and positive solutions for the better care and management of captive and wild elephants. Both African and Asian elephants face extinction within twelve years. You can help by adopting an elephant and help fight illegal wildlife trade, reduce habitat loss and help people live alongside elephants. Visit www.wwf.org.uk to see how you can help today!
On 19th August photography lovers across the globe will be celebrating World Photography Day. This celebratory day was founded in 2009 by the Australian photographer Korske Ara. World Photography Day is an annual, worldwide celebration of the art, craft, science, and history of photography. The main aim of the day is to inspire positive change across the world; connecting people and raising awareness through the use of photography. Get involved with World Photography Day this August; grab your cameras and head out with the kids to explore the wonders of the South West to celebrate World Photography Day. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re an amateur or professional photographer, just be sure to share your best photos on social media and tag using #WorldPhotographyDay. To find out more about world photography day, visit
NATIONAL PROSECCO DAY Now if there is a day that should be a bank holiday it’s National Prosecco Day! And if you’re as much of a prosecco lover as we here at OM, then Tuesday 13th August is your day to celebrate even if you have nothing to celebrate! Pop open the bubbly and invite the girls over for a catch up because...why not?! Raise a toast to those remaining days of the summer and embrace life’s everyday celebrations.

INTERNATIONAL LEFT HANDERS DAY August 13th is International Left-Handers Day. Take the chance to tell your family and friends how proud you are of being left-handed, and also raise awareness of the everyday issues that lefties face as we live in a world designed for right-handers. This international day was launched by The Lefthanders Club in 1992 and it is now an annual event left-hander everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality and increase public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed. This event is now celebrated worldwide, and in the U.K. alone there have been more than 20 regional events to mark the day in recent years - including left-v-right sports matches, a left-handed tea party, and pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drank and played pub games with the left hand only. These events have contributed more than anything else to the general awareness of the difficulties and frustrations left-handers experience in everyday life, and have successfully led to improved product design and greater consideration of our needs by the righthanded majority.
NATIONAL DOG DAY
INTERNATIONAL HOMELESS ANIMALS International Homeless Animals Day (IHAD) began in 1992 when the International Society for Animals Rights decided to dedicate a day to spreading awareness about pet overpopulation. Since then, events, observances, participants, and positive results have grown every year. Currently, celebrations can be found in more than 50 countries. Pet overpopulation is an epidemic that has spread worldwide. Every year, IHAD sponsors spay/neuter clinics, adopta-thons, microchip clinics, and even inspiring speeches from those who work with these animals every day. The millions of homeless animals around the world need humans to look out for them. If we don’t do anything, these animals risk starvation and pain, or euthanisation at overcrowded animal control facilities. The animals depend on us, and thanks to IHAD, we can speak up for them.
Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts
National Dog Day is on August 26th and if you’re a dog lover then this is the day for you to celebrate along with your furry friend! National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure. The mission for this day is to help the public to recognise the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort. Dogs put their lives on the line every day...for personal protection, for law enforcement, for the disabled, for our freedom and safety by detecting bombs and drugs and pulling victims of tragedy from wreckage, now they’re detecting cancer and seizures...things even humans cannot do. There are so many ways to celebrate National Dog Day, whether you decide to give your dog loads fuss and a new toy or you want to do something more extravagant; visit www.nationaldogday.com to find out more ways you can celebrate!

Every year millions of people flock to Plymouth to explore Britain’s Ocean City. As locals, we don’t realise how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the country, with loads of historical landmarks and attractions that we might sometimes take for granted. This summer you can explore Plymouth like never before. Plymouth Citybus has launched Ocean City Sights, a brand new open-top sightseeing bus as a way of showing off the stunning sights of Plymouth to both locals and tourists.
O
cean City Sights takes you on a trip around the heart of Plymouth’s waterfront. There’s plenty to see and do! Hop on and off all day to enjoy the sights of the Barbican, the Hoe, Royal William Yard, and Plymouth’s City Centre.
With Mayflower400 launching later this year, Plymouth is anticipating next summer to be a bumper one in terms of tourist visitors to the city - and the Ocean City Sights bus will give them the perfect way to get around and really take in all the sights from a unique vantage point.
Running throughout the summer, Ocean City Sights is an exciting new ‘hop on, hop off’ experience exploring the best of Britain’s Ocean City - with a host of exclusive offers redeemable at businesses along the way available as part of your ticket.
The aim for Ocean City Sights is to provide a way for tourists and local people alike to make the most of Plymouth’s City Centre and Waterfront areas and we believe it really is fulfilling its aim!
Ocean City Sights, launched on Saturday 6th April, with the first passengers boarding and making use of the ‘hop-on, hop-off’ service. Plymouth Citybus came up with the idea to offer the city of Plymouth an affordable sightseeing option on land, which benefits local businesses, tourists and residents.
the upper deck of the bus in case it rains, and heaters too, in case it gets cold. The front of the upper deck is undercover, so you can enjoy the sights from the top without getting wet or cold! You can still see plenty from the lower deck too. Mark Collins, Head of Commercial and Marketing at Plymouth Citybus, said: “There’s so much to show off in Plymouth and we hope that Ocean City Sights will capture the best of Britain’s Ocean City.
“We are also extremely keen to promote local businesses and Ocean City Sights is providing both attractions along the route and can a convenient way to see the sights of offer passengers exclusive offers Plymouth and get around whilst being they won’t get anywhere else - all able to explore the historical landmarks, attractions and beautiful sights from one of included in the price of a ticket.” the best viewing points of the city.
Ocean City Sights is an all-weather service. There are special weather-proof seats on
Plymouth Citybus has worked with local businesses to provide exclusive offers to Ocean City Sights passengers when they present their ticket at attractions, eateries, and shops on the route. Having only launched in April, Ocean City Sights is already a huge hit with the locals, tourists, and businesses throughout the city. The 35 stops have driven sales for local businesses along the route and beyond, with more people choosing to explore the city of Plymouth in more depth than they usually would; boosting the local economy! The friendly drivers have taken passengers from around the world (America, Europe, even China) around Plymouth’s waterfront - many of whom have enjoyed it so much they’ve boarded again on other days.

One of the amazing things about Ocean City Sights is that it links the City Centre, Waterfront and Royal William Yard areas together, while really highlighting what they all have to offer. Every Ocean City Sights bus ticket gives exclusive discounts at retailers and attractions across these areas, so passengers can make a day of it and hop on/off as many times as they like while getting exclusive discounts along the route - which in turn is great for business. There are around 20 exclusive offers from businesses along the route, so it’s also been proving popular in the business community as a different way to get customers through the door. These offers include 10% off admission to the National Marine Aquarium, two for one on the entire menu at the Treasury bar and restaurant, free child entry to the Mayflower Museum and many, many more!
All the offers available are listed on the dedicated website: www. oceancitysights.co.uk Ocean City sights is a great way to travel around Plymouth for anybody, with wheelchair users and prams welcome onboard, absolutely anyone can enjoy the sights of Plymouth from the buses. The route for Ocean City Sights includes 35 well known and popular Plymouth destinations. The first Ocean City Sights stop is Royal Parade, it then heads to the Barbican passing by the worldfamous Plymouth Gin Distillery. After this, it drives along the Barbican where one of Plymouth’s must-see spots is located - The Mayflower Steps, then along the historic Hoe Foreshore before reaching Millbay and Royal William Yard that boasts restaurants, bars, boutiques and galleries to you to explore. It then travels along Union Street where the Palace Theatre is located - once
home to some of the world’s most infamous performers. It then travels up to the Railway Station and the University of Plymouth - near to where the city’s new groundbreaking heritage attraction The Box is being built. The last stretch of the journey sees it turn into Mayflower Street and through the city centre’s ‘independent quarter’ of shops before returning back to Royal Parade.
Ocean City Sights operates on a ‘hop-on, hop-off’ basis meaning that passengers can begin their journey at any stop they prefer allowing more time to explore the local businesses along the route and make use of the exclusive discounts they receive with their bus ticket. The bus will be operating throughout summer, running every 30 minutes during the school holidays from Saturday 27th July 2019. Tickets for Ocean City Sights start at £3 for children, £5 for adults, ranging up to £15 for a family ticket. There is also an option for an OCS Plus ticket which can be purchased from any Plymouth Citybus service and the Ocean City Sights bus. It gives you unlimited hop-on/hop-off travel on the Ocean City Sights service PLUS unlimited day travel on any Plymouth Citybus service within the Citybus zones 1 and 2. OCS Plus tickets start at £4.50 for children, £7.50 for adults and £23.50 for a family up to 5 people with a maximum of 2 adults.
Get out this summer and enjoy the sights of Plymouth from the Ocean City Sights bus any day of the week, whatever the weather. We’ll definitely be making use of Ocean City Sights here at OM! Finding ways to entertain the family can be difficult at the best of times. Well now you have no reason to struggle, the Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre has a wide range of watersports and activities being provided throughout the summer and beyond. With a huge range of facilities, equipment and instructors on hand to ensure everyone gets the most out of the on-water experience; you are sorted this summer!
T
he school holidays are finally here and there is no better time to get out with the family this summer whilst making the most of the glorious sunshine. The Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre, set in Britain’s Ocean City, has some of the best watersports facilities in the South West. Here at OM, we spent the afternoon at the Mount Batten Centre chatting to Centre Director, Alex King, about the history of the Centre, what watersports activities they offer and we even got to get out on the water ourselves! The Centre sits on ex-MOD land which was used as a base for flying boats during and after the Second World War. After this, the peninsula was handed back to the local authority and converted from a Sergeant’s Mess to what it is now. The peninsula was very different back then and has been adapted and changed to make it how it is today.
The Centre first opened in June 1999 and has operated in a similar way ever since. The conversion of the Mount Batten Centre took a lot of thought and consideration. One thing that was carefully considered was the location of the launch and recovery site. “Predominantly, apart from this year, the wind comes from the South West. This means that the launch and recovery site which is primarily situated here is protected from the winds.”
Centre Director, Alex King began his employment at the Mount Batten Centre in January 2010 after spending 12 years working in artificial winter sports around the country in the leisure sector. His initial aim was to drive the Centre commercially, so Alex took it in his stride to pick up and move forward, making a few changes along the way with a few challenges to tackle at the same time.
“It’s been a challenging and very interesting 8 and a half years.” The Mount Batten Centre has come a long way since it first opened and although the day to day operation of the Centre is similar to when it first opened, many aspects are very different due to various challenges that the Centre has overcome. Due to changes in government policy and funding; NVQs became unavailable to the Mount Batten Centre. One of the main winter incomes for the Centre was providing NVQ level 1 and NVQ level 2 opportunities for outdoor adventure to those that hadn’t met their full educational development or had faced challenges in early life. “These NVQ opportunities were giving a lot of positivity to the people that went through that process, some of which went full circle so they did the original process and then came back into our instructional pool. So they had almost a second opportunity at forming a career path and forging a way forward.”
When government policies changed, funding for individuals became very hard and consequently, the Centre had to adapt and change. Moving forward, the Centre adapted to replace NVQs with BTECs as an alternative vocational, non-GCSE qualification. However, changes in educational policy two years later meant it was deemed compulsory for every child to do GCSEs and BTECs were scrapped. The consequences of this led to part of the Centre’s winter income being reduced again.
“So we’ve had to adjust, we’ve had to pull ourselves up. We could sit down and moan or we could get on and do it. We have had to diversify, we’ve had to tighten our belts and we’ve had to look at the opportunities and we’ve done that on several platforms and we are still doing it. So we created a charity” In December 2014, The Mount Batten Centre Charity Trust was created. There were a number of reasons for the change, one of those being due to the access restriction to what the Centre could deliver from the changes in government policy. Since the charity has been set up, it has created opportunity and positivity for a lot of young people’s lives; whether the barriers to them getting out on the water and involved in physical activity are physical, mental or financial.
“We’ve been able to bridge across those barriers in a number of ways and we’ve done that by fundraising for assets and equipment that will help those that would struggle otherwise.” 22 August 2019
Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
An example of equipment that is vital to the Centre and its dedication to helping young people is its fleet of three bellboats that can take up to 8 young people out on the water. These giant canoes are very stable vessels and they enable participants to work as a team, despite any physical or sensory difficulties they may have, and experience the positivity of being out on the water. The Centre also has several giant standup paddleboards that allow those who wouldn’t have the confidence or potentially the ability to go on a solo paddleboard, the opportunity to get afloat and have the on-water experience. And with paddleboarding being one of the Centre’s most popular activities, it is vital that the Centre provides the opportunity for anyone to get out and experience paddleboarding.
In terms of more recent provision, the Mount Batten Centre is in the midst of their first major indoor activity being built; an indoor climbing wall. This will be a huge asset to the Centre, providing an all-weather activity space for young people using the Centre. “We work closely with Woodlands School who love coming down here and engaging in what we’ve got, it does their students a lot of good. However, we have the UK weather and the number of times we can actually get them out on the water in term time between September and July is limited by the weather conditions.” By having an alternative activity that is indoor, protected from the weather and that can be run and managed safely, there is then a degree of option for times when the weather isn’t playing ball.
The Mount Batten Centre offers a few other indoor activities including soft archery and team building. But watersports are the main focus for the Centre and with the summer holidays in full swing, the Mount Batten Centre has an array of activities available. During the school holidays, the Centre provides Multi Adventure Days – perfect for adventurers aged 8 to 16 with activities ranging from sailing to stand-
up paddleboarding, to climbing and abseiling. For younger adventurers aged 7 to 11 years the Centre provides a Multi Adventure Day, each colour-coded day has three different activities including abseiling, slacklining, soft archery and photo orienteering. For adults the Centre offers a wide range of Royal Yachting Association and British Canoeing courses, and they also provide popular 2 hour taster sessions in kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.
The great thing about the Mount Batten Centre is that there is something for everyone aged 8 upwards, the possibilities are endless. They provide all of the equipment including - wetsuits, buoyancy aids and spray tops, as well as ensuring an instructor is on hand at all stages for a safe and secure experience. So there is no need to worry about going out to hire the kit separately, it’s all included in the cost with safety being put first at every stage of the process. There is absolutely something for everyone at the Mount Batten Centre. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to find out what Centre Director, Alex King’s plans are for the Mount Batten Centre in the future: “I think this facility is a massive asset to this city and it’s an asset that for large elements of the city is currently underutilised. I find it sad to think that there are school children within the Plymouth area who have never been in or near the water. I would like to expand and enhance what we offer, I’ve always had the aspiration that any young person going through their school career and education career should be given the opportunity to engage with what sets this city aside from many, many others which is that out there.”
“If you live in Plymouth, and you’ve not seen Plymouth from the sea then you’ve not seen Plymouth at its best. After all, it is Britain’s Ocean City.” Alex concludes “With plans forging ahead to establish the UK’s first National Marine Park here in Plymouth we’re excited to be considered one of the city’s key stakeholders in the process. We look forward to what the future may bring for us at the Centre, and the city as a whole, and how we can adapt and embrace the concept
so we continue to be able to do what we do best for many, many years to come.” The Mount Batten Centre has the ability to host events and functions such as weddings, birthdays, christenings, engagement parties, conferences, etc. There are also 26 bedrooms at the Centre and as custodians of the Mount Batten Tower, the Centre can host wedding ceremonies at one of the oldest places in Plymouth you can get married (circa 1652)! The Centre is also home to The Lookout that is open all year round serving food and drinks daily, situated on the South West Coast Path; it is perfect for those that want to sit out in the sun with a cup of coffee and a cake whilst enjoying the stunning views! When it comes to accounting and taxes, we all bury our heads in the sand, but why? With plenty of accountancy firms at your fingertips here in Plymouth, you are lost for choice. But what is it that you want from an accountant? Does a large corporate firm sound like your cup of tea, or would you prefer a more local accountant that delivers a personal service catered to your needs? If the later is sounds right to you then Ivybridge Accountants are a perfect fit for you.
I
vybridge Accountants are your local accountancy firm covering Ivybridge, Plymouth, and South Hams. Director, Simon Jilks has grown the business from two employees to now a team of 8. A recent expansion to the business has seen the team grow as they have now opened a new office in Kingsbridge, rebranding to Kingsbridge Accountants at the end of August. We spent some time chatting to Simon about his history as an accountant and how Ivybridge Accountants was set up. Ivybridge accountants were set up on 1st November 2015 when company director, Simon Jilks took a leap of faith and finally set up his own firm after nearly 30 years experience in the accounting industry. His previous working history of accounting started at the age of 16 when he finished
school in 1990. Upon finishing school, Simon knew that he didn’t want to work outside or in construction, but ultimately had no idea what would work for him.
“I kind of fancied the idea of going into finances; I thought well I’ve got a bank account, how hard can it be?...” At the age of 16, not knowing anything about finances or tax, he secured his first full time job after interviewing for several different firms in The Midlands where he grew up. Subsequently, Simon was a trainee at the firm for 3 years before moving to Warwick to work for another firm. He had the opportunity to study for the AAT (Association of Accountant Technicians) exam, which allowed him to gain a
qualification in accounting when he didn’t have a degree or A-levels. The move to Warwick saw a natural progression in the firm, where he trained and looked after trainees that came through the door. Later becoming Head of the accounts department where he was carrying out accounts preparation as well as looking after 5 members of staff.
Simon remained at the firm for around 8 years before making the life-changing decision to relocate to the South West in 2001. Despite being promised a partnership in Warwick, Simon focused on the opportunities open to him down in the South West and took the leap to find him working at a small accountancy firm based in Plymouth where he was able to finish his ACCA (Association of Certified Chartered Accountants) qualification that he had previously started back in Warwick.
After various roles at accountancy firms in Plymouth and years building up a strong client portfolio, Simon decided he wanted to fulfill his goal of setting up and owning his own firm away from the corporate world and focusing on local businesses.

His career in the finance industry saw him working at relatively small firms from 5 employees up to 20, but with his last firm merging they now have in excess of 200 employees, Simon felt it was the time to stand on his own two feet and go it alone, his way. Setting up a business in the South West can be hard, with a huge array of businesses to compete against; but this didn’t stop Simon. With around 400 clients and only 4 years down the line he has an office space with 8 staff in Ivybridge and expansion is in full swing.
“It’s not about size, it’s not about growth. The vision has always been providing something that bigger outfits tend to overlook, it’s the ability for someone to come in and sit down to have a chat about their accounts without worrying about a big bill or sounding silly or being afraid to ask, that’s the vision.” Ivybridge Accountants provide an array of services - everything from basic requirements such as your day to day stuff like payroll and bookkeeping. To handling accounts and tax returns which is seen as all of the normal compliance stuff.
“Planning forward is a big thing.” More recently the focus has been on making sure their clients stay ahead of the curve. With everything moving digitally, the rise of cloud based accounting solutions is rapidly increasing. Changes imposed by HMRC have resulted in businesses needing to become compliant with new software and their till systems. Simon has ensured that he is always ahead of the game by informing his clients of any changes they need to make, as well as supporting them during these changes. Tax is becoming digital and people need to be on cloud-based software. Ivybridge Accountants offer three types of software for their clients to choose from depending on what they want - including Xero, Quick Books, and Free Agent. They can retail this
software to clients and train them on how to make the best use of them.
“They’re all slightly different, all costing slightly different amounts, but in the end, they all do the same job.” Every member of staff is put through relevant training so that they can help every client in the best way possible. Simon and his team are on hand to help you with your accounts, whatever it is you need, they are always there to help you out in any way. Whether you need bookkeeping services, payroll, retirement plan, succession planning or general account handling and tax returns - Ivybridge Accountants are your local accountancy firm there to help when required.
With a strong team in Ivybridge and growing team in Kingsbridge, Simon is more than happy to invest in his staff and their professional qualifications. He is keen to develop his staff and put them on the most appropriate training courses and sponsor them with qualifications such as the AAT as it will help benefit the firm.
“Someone trained me once and someone spent some time and effort and put that into me. I’m all for investing in staff” It’s amazing what has been achieved by Simon and his team in 4 years, and how that’s expanded organically and progressively with the staff, and now the expansion to Kingsbridge.
“We operate an open-door policy, I don’t want clients to feel like they can’t email or phone. Clients can come in and sit here for as long as they like, and get the advice they need.”
Ivybridge Accountants stands as your local accountancy firm, there to take care of any needs you may have, big or small. The firm stands on the values that it doesn’t matter what size business you are if you’re a shoe shop, web developer, farmer or IT company - any business is catered for with Ivybridge Accountants.
Earlier this year Simon was approached about expanding to Kingsbridge and with the Ivybridge office thriving it was a no brainer. In August, they are set to officially rebrand the Kingsbridge office to Kingsbridge Accountants with the view to provide local services as they do in Ivybridge.

Health Matters
Jonathan Cook - Doctor of Chiropractic at Plymouth Chiropratic Clinic tells us how stress can effect our lives and ways they can help relieve you of this.
I
t is well known that many complaints seen by Chiropractors are caused from physical stresses in our lives. The most common complaints people seek chiropractic care for include conditions such as lower back pain, neck pain and headaches.
Our lives are notoriously repetitive; the average office worker will drive to work, sit at their desk for 8 hours, drive home and sit on the sofa. Furthermore we habitually sit on the same chair, sleep in the same bed and generally have the same daily routine, so it is easy to understand how we can run into trouble and need help from a chiropractor. In addition, many of us are a lot less active than we should be. A study funded by the Economic and Social Research Council used the government’s Active People Surveys (dating back to 2006) which examined physical activity across England’s local authorities. This was then measured against factors such as income and ethnicity.
The study found that nearly 80% of the population fail to hit key national government targets such as performing moderate exercise for 30 minutes at least 12 times a month. 32 August 2019
The study found that just over 8% of adults who could walk, had not (with the exception of shopping) walked continuously for five minutes within the previous four weeks. The study also revealed 46% had not walked 30 minutes for leisure in the same time frame, almost 9 out of 10 had not been swimming, and a similar proportion had not used a gym. Whilst we can understand that a lack of activity and repetitive lifestyles can be a cause of spinal complaints, it is interesting to know that the 2nd most common cause of sick leave is stress, and the 3rd conditions such as lower back pain (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, 2017). Emotional stress and physical discomfort are uniquely entwined. If you think about how you hold yourself when you are stressed and anxious - Shoulders hitched up, body rounds forward and breathing changes, it becomes easy to understand how emotional stress is just as likely to cause physical discomfort as a physical stress.
The spine and posture are important factors in the ability of the body to cope with stress, and a healthy spine and nervous system can help to manage stress more effectively.
Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007
Everyone experiences stress on a daily basis due to the modern world in which we live and the increase in demand for our time and attention. Stress, in its negative sense, can be defined as an imbalance of a bodily system(s) due to excessive stimulus that upset normal functioning and disturbs mental or physical health. The most common symptoms of stress include headache, backache, and fatigue, as well as cardiovascular disorders (high blood pressure), digestive problems and sleeping difficulties.
But where does chiropractic come into this? A chiropractors’ role is to assess the spine for normal movement between each vertebra. A healthy spine should have a good amount of movement between each joint. It should move, spring and function as a shockabsorbing structure. The more we stress our spine, the more we start to lose that shock absorbing function. In turn, the movement in the joint reduces and it starts to stiffen up. The problem is that these changes don’t necessarily cause pain or symptoms. However,
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
there will often become a point, where one day our bodies can’t handle the stress anymore and ‘suddenly’ we’re in pain.
The easiest way to research this is to compare patients who have been under chiropractic care for years, compared to those who haven’t.
People often say things like “I just picked up a pen” or “I turned awkwardly;” these events are essentially the straw breaking the camel’s back. The body can’t handle the stress anymore and pain is your body’s mechanism to slow you down and stop further damage.
Research carried out in the US by the RAND Corporation in 1996 looked at 414 people over the age of 75, 23 (just under 6%) of whom reported receiving chiropractic care. The analysis of the 414 – taken randomly from an insurance database – found some startling but consistent results.
Once a chiropractor finds the levels in the spine where the joints aren’t moving properly, they can perform a chiropractic adjustment. These are highly skilled techniques designed to restore the normal movements to the spine. These adjustments may also encourage important changes to the nervous system that may explain other noticed improvements in addition to reduced pain.
Many of us are encouraged to just “deal with it”, and people will often ignore pain and symptoms for months, if not years, before they seek help. Although this distinctly British attitude has been around for generations, it is becoming less helpful in an aging population where we live in our bodies for a lot longer than we did 100 years ago. Many of us would simply like to feel more comfortable as we age. There have been several studies that look at the long-term consequence of not seeking chiropractic care.
Jonathan Cook
Those receiving chiropractic care were less likely to be using a nursing home (95.7% free of nursing care v 80.8%); free from hospitalisations for the previous 23 years (73.9% v 52.4%) and more likely to be mobile in the community (69.6% v 46.8%). They were also less likely to use costly prescription drugs.
So what can you do to help yourself?
The report concluded: “Although it is impossible to clearly establish causality, it is clear that continuing chiropractic care is among the attributes of the cohort of patients experiencing substantially fewer costly healthcare interventions.” Further research in 2007 showed regular chiropractic care resulted in a decrease of 60.2% in hospital admissions, 59.0% less hospital days, 62.0% less surgeries and 85% less pharmaceuticals (Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) 2007 Vol 30 Issue 4: Clinical Utilization and Cost Outcomes from an Integrative Medicine Independent Physician Association.)
Secondly, move more. Becoming slightly more active than you currently are will help reduce both physical and emotional stress, helping you to deal with it more effectively.
Firstly, simply having a consultation with a chiropractor will enable them to tell you how healthy your spine is, and may provide answers and a solution to your presenting complaint.

The 2019 Burgh Island Swim The 2019 Chestnut Appeal Burgh Island Swim will take place on Sunday 22nd September.
B
urgh Island is one of the most spectacular Round Island swims in the UK and is an excellent chance to take part in an iconic swim around the Island made famous as a favourite getaway for Agatha Christie. The Burgh Island swim is suitable for those who can swim a mile in the pool and have experience of Open Water Swimming and be confident swimming in various sea conditions. Registration for the swim is £30. Your entry fee covers the cost of organising the event, but it’s the money you raise that helps Prostate Cancer patients and their families across Devon and Cornwall. And we are delighted that Marchand Petit and the Burgh Island Hotel are the 2019 Burgh Island Swim sponsors. Having great sponsorship means we have been able to attract a new audience and that we are able to promote the charity around the event. It’s hard to believe that The Chestnut Appeal is 20 years old this year. It’s a charity that makes a real and tangible difference in the local area and works with patients, nurses, doctors and consultants to ensure our help is best placed in the community. We provide the very latest in treatments, bring state of the art technology to our hospitals and fund nurse’s salaries, this wouldn’t be available without community fundraising and we rely on donations from the public, so this Iconic Swim we hold every year is one of our big fundraisers and really helps us achieve our aims.
To date the Burgh Island swim has raised over £120,000 for the Chestnut Appeal. Over the years we’ve realised that Men’s Health suffers from an imbalance so at the very core of our work is highlighting this most common cancer in men, as well as Prostate Cancer, we also raise awareness of Testicular Cancer and Penile Cancer, two other quite treatable cancers that sadly if left can be devastating. More than 47,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year, that’s 129 men a day.
The success of the Chestnut Appeal is a testament to what can be achieved if we work together as a community.
Please contact David through chestnut.events@nhs.net For more information about the work of the charity go to www.chestnutappeal.org.uk
