THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN Halloween is celebrated on 31st of October every year across the world, but how did it begin? Where did it begin? And how is it celebrated around the globe?

T

he 31st of October is nearly upon us which only means one thing... Halloween is coming. Halloween is now one of the most celebrated holidays in the UK, so get those pumpkins carved and lit, start thinking about what you’ll dress up as and dig out the costumes from that box in the loft, and make sure you’ve got bags of sweets at the ready for the trick or treaters it’s going to be a spooktastic event! On Thursday the 31st of October, revellers will be able to enjoy all the spine-tingling festivities that Halloween brings the world every year. The haunting event usually consists of fun activities and events, including trick or treating, watching scary films and carving pumpkins.

But why do we celebrate Halloween and where did the tradition originate? It’s a common misconception that Halloween originated in America, but the tradition was

actually started up a bit closer to home. The origins of Halloween come from ancient religious rituals, dating back to the ancient Celtic end-of-summer festival of Samhain 2,000 years ago, the Celts, who lived in the area that is now the UK, Ireland and Northern France, celebrated the New Year on November the 1st.

Halloween has many spooky traditions, trick or treating being one but why do we go trick or treating?

They believed that at the end of the year, on the night of October the 31st, spirits came back from the dead to wander amongst the living. In the 9th century, the influence of Christianity had spread into the Celtic lands, and the Catholic Church eventually declared November the 2nd as All Soul’s Day – a day to honour the dead.

Many UK and Ireland Halloween traditions, such as trick-or-treating, stem back as far as 1000 AD. Poor citizens would knock from door-to-door, begging for food in exchange for songs and prayers to commemorate passed loved ones. These citizens were known as soulers because the food they received was known as a soul-cake: a small round cake with a cross marked on top which, when eaten, symbolised a soul being freed from Purgatory.

It’s widely believed that the Catholic Church wished to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a church-sanctioned holiday, therefore the term All Soul’s Day eventually transformed into the name All Hallow’s Eve; and as we know it today, Halloween.

Later in the 19th century, the tradition of souling was adapted into what is known as guising in which instead of offering a prayer, children would perform songs, recite poems, tell jokes, play instruments or play a trick in return for coins.

Trick-or-treating specifically became popular in early 1940s America after the World War 2 sugar rations were lifted, following on from the movement to turn Halloween into a communitycentred holiday in the 1800s. The tradition of trick-or-treating today is associated with dressing in a disguising costume. When the Celts believed spirits came back from the dead, they also thought that citizens would encounter ghosts if they left the safety of their homes. Therefore, upon venturing out into the cold of the night, people would wear masks so as to not be recognised by the ghosts.

In Celtic celebrations on 31st October, villagers would dress up to ward off spirits and would leave out treats to satisfy any unwelcome, phantom visitors. Soon, people would dress up as ghosts and wear other terrifying costumes, putting on an act in exchange for candy. This is trick or treating in its oldest form.

Skip ahead a few years, and 2nd November became All Souls Day in England. Poor people would visit the homes of the rich and ask that they pray for their deceased loved ones. Soon, children would start knocking on the doors of the wealthy asking for food and money. In Scotland and Ireland children would wear costumes and perform tricks on people’s doorsteps in exchange for a treat. This was known as guising. Many years later, immigrants arriving in America, particularly from Ireland, made Halloween popular and introduced the tradition of guising. Over time it became a rowdy activity and an opportunity for young people to create havoc, but sugar rationing during World War 2 put an end to it. After World War 2, Trick or Treating became popular again, and continues to be to this day, and has been promoted over the years by the media and comic books. The industry is now booming, with sweet companies making a fortune in October each year, particularly in the US.

The only difference we really notice today is how Halloween continues to be a spooky time of year in the UK, as history dictates, while costumes are much less scary and a lot more colourful in the US. Today, in the UK, Halloween is celebrated as the third biggest holiday after Christmas and New Years Eve. Traditional activites range from ghost walks, lighting bonfires, pumpkin carving, apple-bobbing and of course, trick-or-treating at night. Many countries around the globe traditionally celebrate the holiday of Halloween and it’s being celebrated by morning people in more countries than ever before. There’s a simple reason: it is fun and it is good, clean, harmless fun for young and old alike!

In Mexico, Latin America and Spain, citizens celebrate the Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in which they honour the spirits of deceased loved ones who have returned from heaven to enjoy the festivities. Breads, candies and other foods are made into iconic shapes of skulls and skeletons. In Germany, Halloween has gained its popularity in the past decade ,as many of the older generation believe that Halloween is merely an Americanised, commercial holiday. However, one long-standing tradition is to hide knives so as to not risk harm to (or from) the returning spirits. Japan embraces Halloween as a Westernstyle tradition and hold themed events at their Disneyland and Universal Studios theme parks. Japanese Buddhists also honour the spirits of their ancestors in a tradition known as Bon Festival. In China, the Halloween festival is named Teng Chieh. Food and water are placed in front of family photographs of deceased loved ones. Bonfires and lanterns are also lit to guide their spirits safely back to earth. In Austria, for Seleenwochen (Alls Soul’s Week) it’s also tradtional to place bread, water and a lighted lamp on a bedside table before sleeping. This welcomes the dead souls back to earth. Austrian Catholics celebrate this period from October 30th to November 8th.

Halloween is not typically a part of Australian culture, however is celebrated non-religiously as result of America’s pop-culture influence. Trick-or-treating is also rare in France as they do not traditionally celebrate the holiday; neither does the country of Russia. Sweden celebrates Halloween, known to them as Alla Helgons Dag, from the 31st of October to November the 6th. As with many other countries’ celebrations, the day becomes a shortened working day or vacation. Some countries follow similar practises and superstitions to those originating in the UK and Ireland. The Belgians believe it unlucky for a black cat to cross their path or enter their home. Other popular superstitions originating from the Celts say that if a member of the house sees a spider on All Hallows Eve, it is the soul of the deceased member of their family.

Whether Halloween is your thing or not, get in the spirit, grab some sweets from the shop and most importantly... have fun!!!

October 2019 13

When it comes to youth sports, parents are so much more selective these days and most are likely to get involved if they can. It’s up to you to help your children choose not only age and personality appropriate sports, but to help set a foundation for fitness from a young age. However, when it comes to skiing or snowboarding, unless you fly to the Alps or beyond, your options are limited. With snowsports being well established, modern equipment and teaching methods make it easier than ever for you and your children to learn a new skill right on your doorstep. Plymouth Snowsports Centre is the closest facility within 100 miles who are open every day of the week and over the years has dramatically expanded its activities way beyond the famous ski slope.

W

hen someone mentions ‘Britain’s Ocean City’, people wouldn’t normally associate it with Snowsports but, for 30 years now, anyone who has made the arduous journey to Plymouth has been greeted by the sight of the ski slope. OM spent a sunny afternoon catching up with the team at Plymouth Snowsports Centre to find out how they’ve turned the Plymouth ski slope into the iconic landmark it is today and how they plan on celebrating 30 years of Snowsports. Plymouth Snowsports Centre is celebrating 30 years on the 22nd of October 2019 and they couldn’t be happier to celebrate this joyous occasion. The centre was bought in 1989 by business owner, at the time John Nike. Since the sad passing of John Nike, the Nike family now own John Nike Leisuresport.

When the centre was purchased, the focus was solely on skiing. However, in the mid-1990’s snowboarding was rapidly becoming more popular, and the centre introduced it into their programme of activities. With the South West being home to a big community of surfers and skaters, along with the Winter Olympics buzz, snowboarding remains a popular activity for those looking to expand their horizons. After a visit to Austria when John Nike saw the famous Cresta toboggan run, he

decided to add a toboggan run to the centre in the late 1990’s. Snow tubing on the intermediate slope followed in the early 2000s, and the Viper Drop was opened by Ben Mee from Dartmoor Zoo, on the 2012 Open Day. Tots snowboarding for children down to age 4 was added in 2017, and the ‘Space Invaders’ sno-tubing lane was added this year. To this day, these same snowsports see the centre filled with people embracing the daring activities they have to offer right on their doorstep.

The centre is one of five snowsports sites owned by John Nike Leisuresport Ltd. The head office is based in Bracknell and there are also snowsports sites in Chatham, Llandudno, and Swadlincote, all offering the same activities as Plymouth Snowsports Centre. James Pitcher, Head of Snow School at the centre tells us - “It’s the biggest empire of plastics slopes as far as I’m aware that there is in the UK” It’s been 30 years since boxer Barry Mcguigan officially opened the centre in 1989 and the staff couldn’t be more excited to get stuck into the celebrations. Ian Colton, Centre Manager, Helen Ambler, Assistant Manager, James Pitcher, Head of

Snowsports and Gill Robinson, Head of Catering have been busy planning out a weekend of fun for the people of Plymouth and beyond to enjoy, embrace and get stuck into the snowsports activities and much more.

Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October will see Plymouth Snowsports Centre host their open weekend to commemorate 30 years of being open as a snowsports facility. The weekend will be packed with fun-filled activities for people to throw themselves into. Taster sessions will be available throughout the day for people of all ages to learn how to ski and snowboard for £5 and all the activities will be available at discounted prices, including tobogganing for only £1 per ride. The centre has ensured that everybody is catered for with a face painter, a bouncy castle, and even a falconry display from Westcountry Falconry on both days. Also, DBS (Deep Blue Sound) will be providing a musical accompaniment to enliven the open weekend and showcase new and upcoming local talent from their training programme. If all of that wasn’t enough, they are hoping to break the world record of ‘longest chain of linked skiers’ – which involves skiers travelling 100 metres while holding hands. James, Head of Snowsports, is hoping that they can beat the current record of 60. “We would really like to beat it and it is possible, but it’s going to be tricky due to the slope being steep. We need to have more proficient skiers to handle the slope, but it’ll be fun to give it a go and if we don’t manage it then we’ll try again next year!”

The centre has pulled out all of the stops for the open weekend event and ensured that there is something for everyone, of all ages, to get involved in to celebrate 30 years of this amazing leisure facility in Plymouth. The centre has had a few changes over the years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the popularity of the snowsports they offer. Skiing and

snowboarding remain extremely popular, as well as the Cresta Toboggan run and snow tubing slope. The centre offers activities that bring people of all ages together to try something new and embrace this huge leisure facility at the heart of Plymouth. When asked which activity is most popular, Helen Ambler, Assistant Manager tells us “Snow tubing and tobogganing are on par with their popularity, as people tend to do one and then do the other straight after”. The centre offers a ‘Slide, Ride and Drop’ package which is a huge hit with people visiting the centre. This package offers the opportunity to do tobogganing, snow tubing and their viper drop all in one session. Another exciting package available is their increasingly popular Thrilling Thursday sessions where for £15pp you can have unlimited snow tubing, tobogganing and viper dropping between 4 pm and 8 pm, with the Alpine Lodge serving some fantastic food offers to feed the appetite worked up afterwards. However, skiing and snowboarding lessons remain a focal point for the centre as many people are opting to holiday in the Alps on snowsports holidays and therefore decide to take lessons before they go and use the facilities as a tool to practice and hone their skills. With a huge 110 metre main slope that you can’t miss and a dedicated beginner slope, there’s a variety of lessons available. Both private and group, ski or snowboard lessons are available at an affordable cost, starting from £15 for group sessions and £60 for private lessons. Lessons cater for all levels from beginner, right the way up to instructor training. (Schools and Scouts/Cubs/Guides/ Brownies and other clubs start from £10pp). Holiday club sees Plymouth Snowsports Centre flocked with kids enjoying their activities. During the school holidays, parents can enrol their children into the holiday clubs offered knowing they’re being supervised whilst having a fun time. The children choose between learning to ski or snowboard with all of the equipment included and then they get to use the toboggan, snow tube and, viper drop.

“The great thing about it is that it’s cheaper than child-care being only £35 per day and they get to learn a new sport and skill, as well as socialising and interacting with

other children. They also get a hot lunch and squash included.” A few new members of management have seen Plymouth Snowsports Centre head in a different direction than before. They are now focusing on growing their audience and ensuring people still know they are open for business and sharing the excellent activities they have to offer. Catering Manager, Gill Robinson is looking to raise the profile of the centre by bringing back events that used to be extremely popular with the locals. In October, they will re-launch their Sunday lunches which used to be hugely popular with the people of Plymouth. Gill is also bringing back quiz and karaoke nights to get people through the doors. “We’re trying to bring all of those things back for the locals”

One event that is always a big hit with the locals is the comedy nights hosted on the first Friday of every month. The event is held in the newly decorated Alpine Lodge where food is available from their special comedy night menu. Tickets are available for £10 if prebooked or £12 on the door. Gill tells us that they have a new cook and that the feedback on their new menu and food has improved massively and is being recognised by their regular customers. Their focus is to cater for everyone with a variety of options available on the menu, catering for vegetarians, vegans, gluten intolerances and children. The Alpine Lodge can accommodate up to 140 on a normal day, as well as hosting functions of all kinds. The centre is immensely popular with birthday parties for all ages from young children right the way up to 80th birthday parties. They also host an array of other functions such as weddings, engagement parties, wakes, networking events, hen and stag do’s, corporate meetings, Christmas functions, and so much more. They are looking to promote this and see the use of the centre for functions grow.

“It’s a really nice place as you’re away from everything and it’s lovely and quiet.”

There’s nothing better than the warm, inviting aroma of a fresh piping hot bakery. This smell is an everyday occurrence for Sam & Stacey Millard of St Stephen’s Bakery, a family-run bakery at the heart of Plympton Ridgeway. The Bakery has been baking and serving handmade pasties and baked goods to the public since 2006, the owners passion for baking and dedication to giving great customer service makes St Stephen’s Bakery one of the most sort after, family-run bakeries in Plymouth.

S

t Stephen’s Bakery has been owned and run by the same family since its conception in 2006. After 11 years of owning and running the popular bakery, original owners Susan and Kelvin Lock took a step back and sold the business to their daughter, Stacey, in August 2017. OM had the pleasure of meeting the new owners Stacey and Sam Millard to find out about their new business venture, The Bakers Lounge and what made them both give up their successful careers to change their lives and take on a bakery. Switching careers and making life-changing decisions is certainly a family trait within the walls of St Stephen’s Bakery. Stacey’s parents, Susan and Kelvin Lock, distinctly changed their careers in July 2006 when they bought the bakery located on Plympton Ridgeway next to Iceland; the decision saw

Susan go from being a social worker and Kelvin a mechanic; to kneading dough and baking pasties all day every day. This trait was mirrored by daughter Stacey and Son in law Sam who followed the same path in August 2017 when they took ownership of the bakery. Stacey, an occupational therapist and Sam who had worked in motor-home sales for 10 years decided to swap their normal day jobs to become business owners and bakers. In November 2015, after owning the bakery for nearly 10 years, Susan approached Stacey about potentially purchasing the bakery from them. It was something Stacey had never considered, especially with three children and an established career of her own.

“I just thought, mum don’t be so ridiculous, I have three kids, I don’t have the time or money, and I don’t know anything about running a business” The seed was then planted and after mentioning it to Sam that evening, it took around a week for them to decide to make this huge leap of faith and take on the family business. “It was now or never, if they sold it to somebody else, we would look back and completely regret that decision.” Not only has the bakery been a huge part of the family for over a decade, it was the very reason Stacey and Sam met. With two meddling mothers and both recently out of relationships, the pair were introduced in 2009 and have been

Meet Stacey and Sam Millard happily married ever since with three children and now a family bakery to run. Stacey has always played a huge role in the bakery, with her first job being at the bakery when she was 15 years old and she has helped out as and when, ever since.

“My sisters and I have all worked there at some point. We would always dip in at peak busy times and cover when needed” Having taken over St Stephen’s Bakery in August 2017, Stacey and Sam have focused on growing the business through and through, ensuring they have the necessary processes in place, as well as always looking at new trends in the market and being ahead of the game. If taking on one business wasn’t bold enough, Stacey and Sam threw themselves into their new venture, The Baker’s Lounge which launched on the 5th July 2019 as an extension of the bakery. Stacey has always been interested in expanding the bakery and when the previous owner of the unit next-door approached the pair in September 2018, they couldn’t have been happier and they certainly haven’t looked back since.

“We are really glad he spoke to us and offered the unit to us first because the Ridgeway is a really busy high street and there are always new things popping up” With a keen eye for detail, Stacey delved into planning out every aspect of The Baker’s Lounge, from the signage, the equipment, the tiling and even sourcing the

tables and chairs herself. Every little detail was carefully considered, the atmosphere is calm and rustic being the perfect place to eat in and enjoy a coffee and slice of cake. The decision was made to remove the seating from the bakery to reduce queues, making it exclusively take-away and have The Baker’s Lounge as their eat-in section for customers. This decision has reduced waiting times for the bakery and increased sales in The Baker’s Lounge with customers choosing to eat in and enjoy the relaxing environment. The Ridgeway is very competitive for bakeries, cafes and coffee shops, but with a well-established bakery, The Baker’s Lounge has thrived in the first couple of months being open.

“I felt sick on the first day; I kept worrying if anybody was going to come in. It’s quite nerve-wracking and you just doubt yourself, but the first day was really busy, lots of customers came to support us” The Baker’s Lounge has allowed the bakery to expand and become more productive with their 15 members of staff being able to focus on the customers waiting in the queues, as well as opening up space for a brand new kitchen. The new kitchen has played a huge part in the growth of St Stephen’s Bakery, with more room to experiment and explore new ideas.

Sam explains: “When we go to food trade shows it is clear in the food industry market that it’s all about gluten-free and vegan products and our current kitchen didn’t allow us to produce these products” The new kitchen allows the space and time for Stacey to experiment with new products and ingredients. Now being able to explore gluten-free after wanting to tackle it since taking over the bakery. Having finally perfected the pastry for her gluten-free pasties, the bakery launched its gluten-free range on Monday

16th September. Gluten-free baked goods including pasties and cakes, all handmade in the bakery are now available to purchase. And with veganism on the rise, there is no better time to experiment with new products to suit everybody.

“Being inclusive was a huge thing to me, I want everybody to enjoy coming into the bakery and there be a choice for absolutely everyone” Both Stacey and Sam have taken a huge role in the bakery, both throwing themselves into baking and serving customers, as well as administration. Sam spends his time perfecting pastry, whilst Stacey delves into baking cakes which is her real passion. Many things separate St Stephen’s Bakery above other local bakeries, from the legendary pasties, friendly atmosphere and their use of all local suppliers. But above all else, everything is handmade and baked fresh on the day, sold piping hot straight out of the oven. It is clear to us that Stacey and Sam have an immense passion and drive to make every aspect of the bakery flourish and grow; both often working 12-hour shifts to get everything done and putting customers’ needs first.

“We’re very determined, we always think whatever it takes we are going to make this happen and we always find a way to do it” The future is looking bright for the bakery with Stacey and Sam working hard to perfect and establish their vegan and gluten-free baked goods, as well as views to refurbish the bakery and update the equipment soon. Quitting their day jobs and making this brave and bold move two years ago has certainly paid off for Stacey and Sam. Despite lots of hard work and long hours, determination and motivation from both Stacey and Sam has seen St Stephen’s Bakery continue to thrive as it has for over a decade and grow in the heart of Plympton; and with local support, they will go from strength to strength.

Pastry snakes 320g pack ready-rolled puff pastry, 50g grated parmesan or vegetarian alternative, flour For dusting: 1 egg (beaten) poppy seeds, nigella seeds, sesame seeds or celery seeds, To decorate: black or green peppercorns One Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/ gas 7. Unroll the pastry and top with a couple of handfuls of parmesan, then fold in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pastry out to a thickness of 2mm. Cut into 1cm strips, then twist each strip several times to form a snake. Two Lay out the snakes on a baking sheet, then brush each one with egg and sprinkle with more cheese. To decorate, scatter over the seeds. Flatten one end of each snake and press in two peppercorns for eyes. Bake for 12-14 mins, or until golden. Leave to cool. Will keep for two days in an airtight container.

Grasshopper cocktail Ice, 25ml crème de menthe, 25ml white crème de cacao, 25ml single cream To garnish: mint sprig, 25g melted chocolate (optional) Start by making the garnish. Take a sprig of mint, strip off the leaves at the base and dip the stalk in the melted chocolate, holding the upper leaves gently. Leave to set on a plate or tray. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice then pour in the liqueurs and cream. Shake hard until the outside of the cocktail shaker is cold, then strain in to a cocktail glass or small coupe. Garnish with the chocolate-dipped sprig of mint.

Frozen banana ghosts 200g bar white chocolate (broken into chunks), 4 mediumlarge, ripe bananas, 85g desiccated coconut (you won’t use it all), handful dark chocolate drops One In a small bowl, gently melt the chocolate either in the microwave – in short bursts on high or over a pan of simmering water (make sure the bowl isn’t touching the water). Set aside for a moment while you get the bananas ready. Two Peel the bananas, cut in half, and push a lolly stick into the middle of each piece. Spread the coconut out in a shallow bowl. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment, and make sure there is room for the tray in the freezer. Three Using a pastry brush, coat a banana half in chocolate, letting excess drip away. Sprinkle with plenty of the coconut until coated, then set it on the prepared sheet. Now add two chocolate eyes and a mouth, and if you like, cut a few little eyebrows from the chocolate drops too. Freeze the lollies for at least 4 hrs, and up to a week.

Healthy Halloween nachos For the guacamole: 2 limes, 2 small avocados, 1 bunch coriander For the sweetcorn salsa: ½ a 160g can sweetcorn, 200g cherry tomatoes, 1 red pepper, 2 spring onions, 3 sundried tomatoes, 400g can black beans, ½ tsp cumin, ½ tsp coriander, ½ tsp smoked paprika For the bat-shaped nachos: 4 wholewheat tortillas, 1½ tsp oil, 4 purple carrots (cut into sticks) One Start by making the guacamole. Pour the lime juice into a bowl and add the avocado. Mash well with a potato masher or the back of a fork until it’s the consistency you like – we served ours fairly chunky. Add half of the chopped coriander, season to taste and spoon into a shallow bowl or serving dish. Two Now mix all of the salsa ingredients together, along with the remaining chopped coriander. Season with salt and pepper. Arrange clumps of the salsa on top of the guacamole. Cover and chill for up to 30 mins while you make the bat nachos. Three Lay a tortilla wrap out on your chopping board and brush with a little of the oil. Cut out bats (or other spooky shapes) using a cookie cutter, scissors or both. Cut them as close together as possible to minimise waste. You should be able to get about 8-10 from each wrap, depending on the size of your cutter. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Put all the tortilla shapes on 2 or 3 large baking sheets and bake for about 4-5 mins or until golden and crisp.

Law & Finance

When making any kind of legal claim, choosing your legal representatives is a very important decision, and can make a huge difference; it could mean the difference between a wellhandled case and a shambolic ordeal, success and failure – the right compensation and a missed opportunity for justice. What we all look for is trusted and honest legal advice along with extensive knowledge and reputation but without the huge price tag, a firm that puts your needs first with both, personal and business legal issues. Stephen Hall, Director and Solicitor at Evans Harvey Solicitors, spoke with OM Magazine about their recent renovations, the services they provide and future plans for the company.

E

vans Harvey has served the Crownhill community for over 30 years. We last visited them in August 2017 when they had recently purchased their current premises ready for a huge renovation. Two years on and they have finally moved back into their brand new state of the art offices based in the heart of Crownhill Village.

As you would expect from a Solicitors firm, Evans Harvey offer a wide range of services to their clients, including property, conveyancing, wills, tax and probate, family and matrimonial law, personal injury, company and commercial, employment, litigation and chancery work.

Stephen joined the company in December 2008 after a career working as a Solicitor in personal injury around the UK. Since joining, Stephen has worked his way up from partner to Director, taking on the practice as owner in 2010.

Evans Harvey listen and understand every client’s needs to ensure they are providing the best level of service. Also all clients are given the opportunity to complete a customer satisfaction form after each case has been closed.

Since taking over, Stephen has focused on growing the team to become a stronger foundation for their clients with the legal market. The Evans Harvey team is currently 18 strong with plans to continue to recruit for upcoming positions in their new offices.

The questionnaires provide the team with valuable feedback to help them improve their services. Additionally for every form returned Evans Harvey donate money to St Luke’s Hospice. Giving back to the community is one of the top traits of the firm.

Meet Stephen Hall! To this end Stephen is also Chairman of The Crownhill Community Group which was initially set up with charitable intentions at its heart with the assistance of the local business communities, the Church and local Plymouth Councillors. One of the highlights of the work of the group is the Christmas festivities each year and of course the Christmas light up with Santa for the children. Stephen says that prior to the community association being set up there were no Christmas festivities and the event gets bigger every year and is well attended. Working in a busy Solicitors firm sees the team flying by the seat of their pants, ready for every situation that may arise, often being called to emergency Court proceedings at the drop of a hat. However despite how busy Evans Harvey are they still make time for the local community, visiting local care and nursing homes on a weekly basis. One thing that sets Evans Harvey above other Solicitor firms in Plymouth is that they offer home visits to clients and members of staff are often heading out of the office to visit elderly clients who cannot attend their offices occasionally taking a box of chocolates and flowers to cheer them up. Stephen says that often once the legal process is sorted our clients will often engage in conversation and have fascinating life stories to tell and makes it much more than simply a job.

Meet the Evans Harvey team! 30 October 2019

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

Stephen says “we do nursing home visits two or three times a week and www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

we do not charge travel costs or hourly fees for travel. We simply do it. If it is an hour of your time and if you cannot do that then quite frankly you should not be doing it at all.” Evans Harvey value themselves on the ethos that building a trusting relationship with clients is very important and as such have developed relationships with clients spanning many decades and effectively have become the family Solicitor not just for them but their children and grandchildren etc.

“It sounds pompous, but it really is genuine and we always go the extra mile for people and do everything we can to help” Catering to every client is extremely important to the team, they hold free dropin clients on Tuesday mornings 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. with advice on wills, probate and inheritance claims and on Wednesday mornings 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for family matters. The firm will also be re-instating their Tuesday evening clinic once things have settled down from the move. The office is also open on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is good for people that cannot get in during the week.

The expansion to their office has seen some huge improvements. Stephen and the team could not be more pleased to be back in their permanent premises. Evans Harvey have been situated in their current building for over 35 years but only fully purchased the premises in 2017 with the view to renovate the two houses into one combined set of offices – and they have done exactly that. Having moved out of their Crownhill Village and into a temporary office on Budshead Road in December 2018, the Evans Harvey team finally moved back into their brand new, refurbished premises on 27th August 2019, after a long 8 months of renovations.

The renovation has transformed the premises into a bright-white, professional office where clients are welcomed to a brand new, beaming

reception area providing a calming, quiet space for them to wait. “Everything’s been upgraded, the computers, telephones, servers, technology, and furniture – we’ve brought everything up to the 21st century”.

After spending 8 months sharing an open plan office, the Evans Harvey team are thrilled to be back in their own space with all legal executives and Solicitors having their own separate office, large enough to accommodate clients; meaning no more sharing. The refurbishment has allowed for nine extra rooms to be situated within the building, as well as a large conference room seating up to 10 people comfortably, a brand new reception area with Evans Harvey branding and fully fitted disabled toilet facilities. Every detail has been carefully considered with the renovation. “The new office space is pleasant to walk into and I think it has been very sensitively done in so much that we still want to offer the service to the local community and we certainly don’t want people to think we’re putting our prices up to cover this, we are not.”

The process of expansion has not been easy or quick, with a threestage plan from buying the premises, building the extension and now the first two stages are complete they can focus on growing the team even further and expanding the firm to new locations across Plymouth. Expansion is definitely on Stephen’s mind despite having only just returned to their head office. To this end Stephen has acquired an interest in a legal practice in Mutley Plain, Plymouth and has indicated that for the future “we should watch this space”. There is no doubt that Stephen thrives to push Evans Harvey to be the best Solicitors firm in Plymouth with some huge plans in store for the future. It is clear that his passion for both his work and his clients really are endless with every member of the team delivering first-

class service to each and every client. Stephen says “We are looking to expand significantly over the next 5 years”.

Evans Harvey also benefits from free 3 hour car parking in the public car park to the rear of its Crownhill premises.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS OCTOBER This October Macmillan Cancer Support are challenging you to give up drinking alcohol for the month to raise money to help them support even more people facing cancer.

W

hy not Go Sober for October this year? It’s just like a normal month but without the alcohol and hangovers. We all love a glass of wine after work or a beer down the local pub, but a month off will do everyone the world of good. Go Sober for October encourages you to make a difference to the lives of many cancer suffers and their families, as well as adopting a healthier lifestyle yourself by giving up alcohol from 1st to 31st of October.

Just think how amazing it’ll feel to go 31 days without a dreaded hangover. Alcohol makes you urinate more, which can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is what causes many of the symptoms of a hangover. Splitting headaches, sickness, dizziness, dehydration: anyone who’s ever drunk too much knows the consequences and they aren’t pretty! Other than copious amounts of water and a couple of painkillers, the only real cure for a hangover is not drinking in the first place...

It is recommended that to keep the risk from alcohol low, both men and women should not regularly drink more than 14 units a week. If you do choose to drink, it is best to spread your drinks evenly throughout the week.

Have you ever wondered why your skin looks tired and ill? Alcohol dehydrates your body generally, including the skin – your body’s largest organ. This happens every time you drink.

Many drinkers are unaware that regularly drinking more than 14 units a week can lead to a wide range of long-term health problems, including cancer, stroke, and heart attack. Drinking 14 units of alcohol works out to be roughly 6 pints of beer or 7 glasses of wine. Cutting down on your alcohol consumption, no matter how much you drink, will significantly reduce the risk of long term health issues that could arise. Macmillan Cancer Support provides support to cancer patients from the moment they’re diagnosed, through their treatment and beyond, they are right there with you, offering emotional, physical and financial support. Going sober for October will help change the lives of many people suffering from cancer and their families, all while benefitting your own health too.

Drinking too much is also thought to deprive the skin of vital vitamins and nutrients. You’ll be amazed at how much better your skin will look when you cut out alcohol from your diet. One thing that most people don’t realise is the negative impact drinking alcohol has on their sleeping habits. More sleep will leave you feeling more energetic, improve your decision making and allow you to have better-eating habits. Giving up alcohol will see you wave goodbye to those bags under your eyes and say hello to that long-awaited beauty sleep. Saving money is one of the best reasons to Go Sober for October. We all love a pint and a catch up with friends on Friday after work, but let’s face it... it’s never just the one pint of beer or glass of wine, is it? Most of the time it turns into a night out on the town where you

stumble in the door at 4 am. And then you check your bank account on Sunday night to realise you’ve spent £80 on a few rounds that you don’t even remember! You could save hundreds of pounds this October by going sober, that money you save could help you save for that new phone you’ve been dying to get, and you can even donate some of it to Macmillan to help support those with cancer. A month away from drinking will give you time to focus on yourself, why not invest time into a new hobby? It could be anything, maybe you keep putting off getting fit and healthy, use the money you’re saving to join your local gym. You could learn a new skill, do yoga, read a book or join a sports club; anything you do will be more productive than drinking. Most people think that they can’t have fun without alcohol, this is certainly not true. You’ll probably find you have more fun with no regrets the following day. Have a movie night with your closest friends, explore the wonderful sights of Plymouth, host a games night or head out to your favourite restaurant for a meal with your nearest and dearest. But remember all along that going sober for October is helping millions of cancer patients receive vital support from Macmillan Cancer Support - you are making a huge difference to the lives of people who need it most, all whilst improving your own health in the process. And you might even find that the positive effect reduced alcohol consumption has had makes you drink less once the month is over.

Goodluck!!! To find out more about Go Sober For October head to www.gosober.org.uk where you can register and help raise the funds to support cancer patients. If you want to find out other ways to help fundraise then go to www. macmillan.org.uk.

Knife crime: Social ventures can help repair the damage austerity has left behind by Benjamin Stein

W

hitleigh is a small district in Plymouth that I walk through most nights after work. Earlier this year, it was the location of a teenage stabbing. Throughout the week after I felt reluctant to take my eyes off approaching strangers. I would frequently use the entire pavement to keep a manageable distance between myself and young passers-by. Surprisingly, others treated me with similar caution. This apprehension didn’t last long, but I kept thinking about it. Knife crime made the people of Whitleigh cognisant of their vulnerabilities, for others that tension won’t pass so soon. The ferocity of youth violence worries us all. Earlier this year, the deaths of three 17-year olds in a single week propelled this issue into public consciousness, elucidating the unprecedented numbers of young people carrying knives.

Between January and May, 10 teenagers were killed by a knife in Britain. In London, it is reported that those aged 15 to 24 are six times as likely to be “fatally stabbed or killed than other Londoners”.

IS AUSTERITY PARTLY RESPONSIBLE? It’s not surprising to see the social fabric unravel after nine years of austerity. When public services disintegrate people are more likely to resent their surroundings. When this occurs, you can usually expect crime to rise. The dismantling of youth service funding must be considered relevant to the spiralling youth homicides we see today.

36 October 2019

According to YMCA England and Wales, public spending in youth services experienced a £750 million reduction in annual spending between 2010-2011 and 2016-2017. That’s a 65% reduction in real terms. Young people need access to services and mentors that create positive visions for the future and divert them from problematic environments. Austerity has undermined youth services’ ability to do this. UK’s youngsters have endured cuts to mental-health services and homelessness services and they are exposed to resultsbased league tables that incentivise schools to exclude the most vulnerable. Government research suggests that vulnerable children are twice as likely to carry a knife.

Our mechanisms to support vulnerable children are failing. Society must provide youngsters with good reasons to avoid crime. Right now this isn’t happening. I can vividly remember the hatred I felt as a teen. I resented the adults around me, so it was natural to associate with others who felt the same. These years didn’t lead to crime, but even my closest friends will tell you that I wasn’t easy company. My entire outlook changed when I felt valued in a caring community. At Plymouth Cricket Club, I was surrounded by positive role models and before long, my anger subsided. It is imperative that today’s kids get the same chance.

Can social enterprises help? Any effective strategies will require a

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

multi-disciplinary approach. And social enterprises are crucial. But why? Firstly, social businesses are often run by people who have personal experience of the problem. This can result in inspiring people to turn their limited resources into innovative solutions. ‘Inspire Youth’ was founded by Joel following his friend being stabbed to death. The enterprise challenges criminal perspectives through inspirational Instagram videos that utilise positive role models. Rapper Bhishma Asave runs the social venture, ‘Rap Therapy’. This project targets children at risk of exclusion and employs rapping workshops to strengthen their mental health. It’s thought that encouraging positive expression amongst young people can reduce their susceptibility of engaging in violence.

Secondly, social enterprises are often local community actors as opposed to external agents like government agencies. This can encourage a more holistic, empathetic approach. Temi Mwale’s 4Front project runs daily workshops that provide education, oneto-one mentoring and a boxing club to troubled/excluded children. Furthermore, according to Barnardo’s CEO Javed Khan, community actors are often more knowledgeable, and held in higher regard locally than most others. Thirdly, as the capabilities of government and charities falter, greater onus falls upon social enterprises. Despite recently announcing an extra £100 million to tackle knife crime, government focus remains on policing above community-building. Regardless, Brexit continues to paralyse the government to such an extent that it cannot be relied upon for creative solutions.

And following recent controversies around charities like Oxfam and Age UK, public trust in charities is down to just 55 percent in 2018. You can expect this to limit donations and undermine their capabilities on the ground.

Lastly, social enterprises are proven job creators for vulnerable groups. The old expression “nothing stops a bullet like a job” will work just as well with knives, and social enterprises can prove it. The much-heralded Scottish Violence Reduction Unit was built on one simple question: “Can we improve the health and safety of our community through jobs and education rather than through suppression and incarceration?”

The Forward Trust project among others have taught us that business solutions can help fill the void faltering public services are leaving behind. That said, we are going to need more social enterprises engaging with our youngsters and greater collaboration between the ones that do. Britain’s deprived communities need help and smart interventions will change (and possibly save) lives.

The Forward Trust (formerly ‘BlueSky’) is built on this same question. It provides flexible employment opportunities to exoffenders, directing their entrepreneurial skills toward social benefit. The project boasts of reoffending rates as low as 15%; the national rate fluctuates between 29% and 32%. That is life-changing impact.

Whether your enterprise creates local sports opportunities, education for excluded children or jobs for the vulnerable; we must provide youngsters with a positive vision for the future.

Moving forward Unrelenting cuts to public spending are beginning to threaten societal functionality. Our healthcare is failing the elderly, our benefit-system is failing disabled people and our housing-system is failing the poor. We must not fail our children too.

There are so many of us who are desperate to make a real impact on the world. Here lies a great opportunity to do just that.
