We also visited Marjon Sports Centre. It’s an impressive place! Did you know it’s not just for students? Their modern pool and top-of-the-range fitness equipment will help you to work off all that Christmas food in no time! Turn to page 22 to read about the centre and their very competitive membership options. We’ve also spoken to Mike Quick at Tech Surveys about his success in conducting EPC’s and Legionella assessments in homes, particularly those that are rented, and in commercial buildings. He’s got a great story to tell, and is here to explain why the reports and assessments are so important, on page 18. Now get some warm clothes on, make a cuppa and get cosy this January with our latest issue of OM!

Your Dreams Our Design
By Westcountry Tile & Bathroom Westcountry Tile & Bathroom, based in Christian Mill Business Park, has 25 years experience in supplying and fitting bathrooms and wet rooms. No job is too big for Jamie Shewbrook and his team, which is evident in a recent project, which involved fitting four bathrooms and a cloakroom in a renovated hotel which is now a beautiful, minimalist home.
T
he building, which is surrounded by lush Cornish fields in the village of Widegates, near Looe, once hosted up to 20 guests at a time as a hotel. The couple who took on the project have worked hard to completely renovate the property, and high on their agenda were top-quality, luxurious bathrooms. After visits to major home improvement retailers and not finding what they had in mind, the couple were recommended to visit Jamie at Westcountry Tile & Bathroom. Although the high quality and professional finish of the luxury brands on offer might suggest a much higher price point, the couple worked with Jamie to get the best they could for their budget. The style they had in mind was modern and minimalistic, but still in keeping with the traditional style of the property. On their first visit to the showroom they were impressed with the range of displays on offer and the knowledge of the team. They tell us, “There was a huge choice of products including
10 January 2017
designer brands in the showroom. We were there for quality bathrooms and to get some good advice from someone with a wealth of knowledge and experience, and that’s exactly what we received.” The couple had always liked the boutiquefeel of bathrooms in luxury hotels – big walk-in showers with huge waterfall-effect shower heads and stand-alone baths – so this was the basis for their plans and product selection. In the end, the couple agreed with Jamie on the brand they’d like – Villeroy & Boch. This brand is highly recognised for its quality workmanship which offers flexibility on price and design. Jamie explains, “After an initial consultation together we came up with a unique design concept that fitted the customer’s requirements. We made a few adjustments along the way, not necessarily of lesser quality, just slightly more price sensitive. For example, we replaced certain items such

as the toilets with a slightly more affordable option, but still working on a basis to keep within the style and quality they were after.” Westcountry Tile & Bathroom specialise in top-end brands, but this doesn’t mean that a budget cannot be stuck to. If you’re watching the pennies but would like a high quality design, Jamie can offer many different ranges to suit your budget, taste or style; although the couple quickly learned that quality bathrooms can make a huge difference to the value of a property. The renovation has been recently valued with much of the work complete, and the impressive bathrooms have significantly increased the value of the home. Because of this, the couple have justified their investment. They tell us, “Everyone loves a nice bathroom, but we don’t do it just for the sake of a good shower, we’re doing it for the look of the house and to increase the value of the property.”
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
Jamie enlightened us on the products the couple have had fitted – “In the family bathroom they’ve chosen the free-standing La Belle bath along with Memento basin & Wall Mounted Architectura toilet, all in Villeroy & Boch with a beautiful walk-in shower.
to ordering and supplying was seamless. Jamie’s got a team around him who between them have more than 70 years combined experience within the industry. It was all about precision and making sure everything is looked after to the very last detail,” the couple explain.
The master bathroom has a whirlpool bath, controlled via a remote control, with 12 jets and bath filler. The basin is wall mounted with a Legato grey lacquered vanity unit and LED surround, with the same toilet and all in Villeroy & Boch. Both baths are truly quite special pieces. The trays in the showers have a wet-room feel, but they’re trays rather than wetrooms, which is more cost-effective and easier to maintain. Everything has been carefully designed to feel minimalist, and all the basins and toilets are off the floor maximise the space available.”
“It was everything you’d expect from a quality showroom; Jamie is a very professional and personable young man, in tune with his customer’s requirements from a young family to a retired couple and everybody in between. Professional, efficient, seamless - it’s everything you’d expect from the quality and service that you’re paying for.” If you’re going through a renovation or new build and you need guidance Jamie will be only too happy to advise.
Supplying products for this number of bathrooms might seem like a big job, but the entire process was professional and efficient for the couple. “Going through the motions of finding what we wanted,
The New Year is a great opportunity to improve your home, so if it’s fantastic service and top quality design that you’re after, pop in to the Westcountry Tile & Bathroom showroom and see how they can transform your bathroom into the most luxurious and tranquil part of the home – just the way it should be.

Time For Tea
We are a nation of tea lovers. In fact, 165 million cups of tea are consumed daily across the U.K, making Britain the number one tea drinking nation behind Ireland. But aside from it being a refreshing pick me up, there are many great health benefits when it comes to brewing a cup of tea that you may not know about.
English Breakfast Tea
Liquorice Tea
Camomile Tea
One of the most favoured brews across the nation, English breakfast tea not only tastes great but can also make you feel great too thanks to its variety of health benefits.
A sweet cup of liquorice tea is filled with a number of antioxidants and beneficial properties.
Camomile meaning ‘ground apple’ offers numerous health-boosting benefits.
Due to its antioxidant content, English breakfast tea has been shown to aid in reducing the risk of overall heart disease.
Not only can the flavoursome beverage help soothe the digestive tract, but it is also a perfect remedy to help fight a winter cold. It has expectorant qualities that clear congestion, reducing that tickly cough!
The sweet and flowery tasting tea has been used as a solution to treat insomnia for centuries. It can provide you with the perfect night’s sleep by soothing the nervous system, helping you to fall asleep quicker.
It can also lead to increased mental stimulation and combat dehydration, providing you with energy throughout the entire day.
Furthermore, liquorice is particularly good at acting as a pain relief and can also help to relieve stress.
Thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, camomile also helps in clearing skin irritations such as eczema, acne and allergies.
Peppermint Tea
Berry Tea
Chai Tea
As well as being delicious, peppermint tea is jam packed full of a range of benefits to help improve your overall health.
Berry teas are both an effective and delicious way of boosting your health and wellbeing.
A famous Indian blend, Chai tea stands out for combining black tea, milk, spices (cinnamon, cloves, pepper and ginger) and sweeteners.
The refreshing beverage can help to reduce pain, relax the body and mind, aid in weight loss and improve your immune system. It is also regarded as a carminative, meaning that it improves digestive health by reducing bloating, cramping and nausea.
For example, raspberry tea contains high levels of vitamins and other nutrients that can help to reduce inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. It can also help strengthen contractions during labour.
Drinking peppermint tea before bed has also been proven to give you a more restful night’s sleep.
14 January 2017
Blueberry tea can aid in clearing toxins from the body as well as being a tasty caffeinefree way of meeting your daily water needs and preventing dehydration. The fruity tea also helps to boost your immune system.
Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007
Besides its great taste, Chai tea is full of benefits that can lead you to a healthier life. For starters, it’s a great drink to help combat digestion problems and is also an effective way to take care of your heart and lower your blood pressure. Additionally, the minute you feel a cold coming on, brew a cup of Chai tea to ease a sore throat and reduce a fever.

January 2017 17
BUSINESS PROFILE This month we interviewed the owner Tech Surveys, headed by Plymouth-born, Mick Quick. Mick carries out Energy Performance Certificates and Legionella risk assessments. This is not a path he chose but he thoroughly loves his work.
W
hen Mick was 17 he had tendencies to hang out with the wrong crowd, and at the time his future could have taken a very different path to where he has ended up today. That is until his Dad stood in front of him and gave him three choices: Army, Air Force or Marines. As reluctant as Mike was he chose the first option and joined the army as an engineer in 1992. Looking back, this was a pinnacle point in his life as after he had completed his training, he was posted to Germany where he then lived and went on many tours, some of which included Bosnia and Canada. However in the year 2000 after 8 and a half years of service, Mick was discharged due to the stress of being under a huge amount of pressure having to run the stores on base and having to deal with the stress of being constantly audited. After Mick’s discharge the first thing he did was spend some quality time with his wife, Jasmine. The pair have known each other since they were children as they were family friends for many years. The couple got married in 2001, bought their first home and had their son, Michael. When Mick came out of the army he found it particularly difficult to transition back into civilian life. He found it extremely hard trying to convince a civilian employer that the skills he’d gained in the military could be transferred. Jasmine explains, “I think it was the fact he was 26 and they couldn’t believe he’d done so much. All the skills he gained in the army were top notch. He’s gained so
Jasmine & Mick Quick
many certificates but these aren’t always recognised by civilian employers.” This was a challenging time for Mick so he decided to start working in various entry level roles to build up his experience before landing a job in Plumbase where he stayed for a couple of years. Some of Mick’s relatives worked in the plumbing trade, and he had gained experience from going out on jobs with them so this industry made sense to him. In 2004, Mick left Plumbase as he was keen to progress and earn more money as their daughter Lilli had just been born. He went
on to do some agency driving work which lasted for four years, and in an effort to earn more money for their growing family, Jasmine started working nights and the kids would go to pre-school in the daytime. They then decided to move into a new, larger property in 2006. Three years later, Mick became a Transport Manager at a local Builders Merchants. He trained and completed his NVQ level 3 certificate in just 11 weeks, when it usually takes two years. To help him with getting to and from work, Mick decided to buy a moped which turned out to be the demise of his career. One morning in 2010, on his way to work Mick was involved in an accident and was knocked off the bike and sustained a knee injury. Mick pushed the broken moped home and the knee swelling prompted Jasmine to take him to hospital, and following an operation, Jasmine was forced to leave work to look after the children. Mick was advised by his Doctor to stay home from work for three months, but his employer couldn’t accommodate this. “I had no choice but to go back to work,” Mick explains.” I had to keep a knee brace on and had to lower my hours because I was in so much pain. This is when things started to go downhill. I couldn’t drive HGVs anymore. I could tell that my boss

found that the shower head and hose were corroding and he informed the tenants on the risks it posed. The mother took her baby to the doctor and it turned out that the baby had the early stages of Legionnaire’s disease. The baby could have died had she not been treated thanks to Mick being able to identify the risk, and the problems in the home were sorted right away and the baby made a full recovery.
The family then began to struggle. Mick was trying to find another job, and it was at this time that Jasmine became very ill. After many tests in hospital, in 2011 she was diagnosed with ME and fibromyalgia, which is a chronic pain condition. The couple lost their caravan holiday home and had to sell everything they could to support the family. They nearly lost the house as it took almost 18 weeks for financial support to come through. Jasmine tells us how grateful they are to the British Legion for their help at the time they provided uniforms for the children and gave the family food vouchers. Mick is so appreciative that he even donated money back to them later on as a thank you. Things took a turn for the better when in 2012, Mick’s brother, Ben, set up his own plumbing and heating business which focused on renewable and eco-energy. However, homes they were working on needed to have EPC’s (Energy Performance Certificates) carried out. Ben approached Mick and offered to put him on a training course so that he could carry out this part of the business. After 18 months, Mick was finally back in work. By this point he was becoming so desperate he was even considering starting up his own business knitting scarves! “Anything to keep a roof over our heads!” said Mick.
“
“
Legionnaire’s disease is a very dangerous form of pneumonia and it can kill
2014 due to lack of funding, Mick received a phone call from his brother saying he had no more work for him and he told Mick, “You are Tech Surveys now, it’s all yours!” Mick was using his earnings to pay back previous debts so he didn’t have the funds for a business start-up. Instead, he got the company off the ground by knocking on doors, letting people know that Tech Surveys exists. His research into his new business found a gap in the market – Legionella risk assessments. Legionnaire’s disease is a very dangerous form of pneumonia caused by bacteria and it can kill a vulnerable person, yet many people are unaware of what it is and how it occurs. The bacteria are caught by breathing in small droplets of contaminated water, and older homes are more likely to be at risk due to dated or more complex water systems.
Mick was busy conducting EPC’s, often working six days a week, and this continued for year and a half until the funding was cut for boilers and there was less demand for EPC’s. Ben partnered up with someone else to do loft insulation, and Mick moved from EPC’s to doing the insulation and solar panel fitting. Because of the way his brother’s company worked in regards to eco-energy, Ben later discovered that he needed an independent company that he could trust to monitor their work and conduct EPC’s. Tech Surveys was born, and Mick was the best person to head the company.
Mick fills us in - “If your shower head or tap heads are dirty, they become a breeding site for Legionella. If you’re a smoker, have asthma, heart problems, are over the age of 45, male or have had major surgery you are more susceptible to the disease. This is why when you come back from a holiday, it’s a good idea to run your taps and shower for a while to clean out the water pipes.” If Mick goes into a property and finds a Legionella risk, he is able to give the tenant or homeowner recommendations on how to avoid it. “People need to be educated on it as it’s a very serious issue.”
“It was going to be an independent company but they needed somebody to be a director - that was me, and I didn’t even know!” When Ben’s company went bust in
Recently, Mick went to a property to carry out a Legionella risk assessment and was told that the baby living there was ill. While carrying out his assessment, Mick

“People need to be educated about both Legionella assessments and EPC’s as they’re important issues,” Mick explains. “Landlords cannot rent a property or evict a tenant from the property if there’s no EPC. To sell your property you also need one. We’re trying to educate people that you don’t need to use the estate agents for it, you can get it a lot cheaper. Some estate agents charge £100 to £150, whereas my domestic EPC rates start from just £39.99. Legionella assessments are just £60 each.” Mick and Jasmine now work as a team. Mick conducts the EPC’s and Legionella risk assessments and Jasmine answers the phone, books the jobs in and organises the diary. Moving forward, Mick would like to focus more on commercial EPC’s. Staying positive, working hard and never being afraid of trying new things - these are the values this man has stood by over the years and still stands by today. If you are a home owner, rent a property or are a landlord and you would like to find out more information on the importance of EPC’s and Legionella risk assessments, contact Mick Quick.

Ta k e t h e p l u n g e at Marjon Sports Centre
D
id you know that the Sports Centre at University of St Mark & St John is open to all? The impressive centre, situated near Derriford Hospital, is fast becoming the health hub of choice for fitness enthusiasts across Plymouth and beyond.
The Sports Centre is not only popular with students and the public – professionals have also taken a shine to the facilities. Plymouth Raiders and Plymouth Argyle are based here for training and therapy, and during the Rugby World Cup in 2015, Marjon played host to the Namibia team. Diversity is important here. Sports Centre manager, Simon White, makes it clear that visitors are welcome regardless of age, interest or ability. The swimming pool has a shallow end at 0.9m to make it child and family-friendly, and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to assist anyone who needs support and advice.
Classes and pool sessions have been planned with various people in mind – an over 60s cycle class is on offer, and in the pool there are sessions available exclusively for the over 60s, the disabled, adults only and females only. Simon is proud to tell us about the older client base they have in the gym, with lots of support available. Final year sports students are stationed across the centre offering clinics, therapies and training, allowing them to gain practical experience while putting their studies into practice. Marjon offers courses in Sports Therapy, Science and Rehabilitation using cutting edge technology and techniques, and by their final year these students are fully qualified, although they are always supervised by staff holding a professional license and insurance to practice. This makes their pricing very competitive – a 55 minute treatment in the Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinic costs just £12.50, and this covers manual therapy, soft tissue therapy, electrotherapy and more. These clinics are often used by those recovering from surgery or cancer, and staff work with clients to help them back into exercise, using various equipment and tailored programmes to do so. The gym at Marjon is full of topof-the-range equipment from leading brands. Their Synergy functional fitness rig creates an excellent fitness space, and their

free weights area is situated in the centre of the gym, making it open and accessible to all. This gym is also home to the only Life Fitness Power Mills in Plymouth at the moment. These high-tech step machines are popular in the US, and they have a screen which displays various hikes and walks around the world, allowing the user to explore scenery of their choice as they take each step.

It easily competes with other fitness and health centres in the city, with its refurbished 25m pool, state-of-the-art gym equipment and competitive membership options. The centre, which is only six years old, also boasts sports halls and gymnasiums which can be booked for various activities, as well as outdoor pitches, sports therapy, personal training and fitness classes.
The membership plans at Marjon Sports Centre are competitive and flexible
During our visit we used the pool and were very impressed by how simple, clean and modern it is, allowing users to focus on their swimming. It was quiet on the Friday afternoon, with lots of space to swim and one lane available for those wanting to swim at a faster pace.
Taking the plunge might be daunting for someone who hasn’t swam in a while, particularly if you’re new the centre and you’re on your own, but the entire layout of the changing rooms and pool area is easy to navigate, and a woman who told us that she was there for the first time announced how lovely she thought the place was. We swam a few lengths, feeling relaxed knowing that we weren’t confined to a lane, and spotted the diverse range of

visitors Simon had been telling us about. It’s easy to forget that the centre is part of a university, with most pool users being of an older age. We were also joined by two women who were having a catch up as they took a gentle swim, and later a family with two younger children climbed into the pool. The swimming timetable varies, with general sessions starting as early as 7am and ending at 9pm on certain days. The schedule is updated regularly and is available on their website. After our swim we stopped at the on-site café for a coffee. It’s a great place to wind down after a session in the centre, and hot food and light snacks are available if you’ve worked up an appetite! Become a member The membership plans at Marjon Sports Centre are competitive and flexible, with various options to choose from, although you can also pay-as-you-go to use the gym and pool if you’d like to give it a try before becoming a member. Their most popular membership option is just £31 per month or £310 for the year, and covers unlimited use of the pool and the fitness suite with induction and a personal programme included. There is the option to add group exercise classes to your membership for an additional £10 per month / £100 per year. The Sports Centre currently has a fantastic offer available for 6 weeks’ membership for £45. There is no joining fee, no contract, no commitment and nothing to cancel. It allows new members to try out the facilities for an extended time, without being tied into a year-long contract. These memberships include a parking permit which allows members to park right outside the building (pay-as-you-go users can have their car park fee refunded against their admission), and it’s easy to find - from the Derriford Roundabout take the exit towards the hospital, then take the first right at the traffic lights. Continue down this road to the mini roundabout and the large Marjon Sports Centre building and car park is immediately on the right.

This February be a parT oF sT Luke’s CoFFee Mornings Get friends together to raise much-needed funds for families like mine, says farmer’s daughter Sandra.
Just after her father’s death, Sandra spotted it was the St Luke’s Coffee Morning month and wanted to get involved. Their first event raised £1,500; that’s enough to get nurses out to two other families. Their enthusiasm has grown since then and this year they will be taking on their third event to ensure others receive the same level of incredible care.
St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth supporter Sandra Fry from Dartmoor is encouraging people to hold a coffee morning this February to help local families get vital care in the community. Sandra’s father, Douglas Bowhay, wanted to die at his family farm after he was diagnosed with lung cancer at Derriford Hospital and with the support of the St Luke’s, he did. She explains, “His last days and hours were here with us and the animals, but only because we had help from the wonderful people at St Luke’s.
“All the animals on the farm were silent, even though they were inside and hungry. It’s like they knew...” The morning my dad died was like no other I’ve ever known on our farm. All the animals on the farm were silent, even though they were inside and hungry. It’s like they knew. I suppose they missed him too. It was the death he wanted and what we as a family needed for him - we were at home and all together. “The way their nurses Derek and Cathy came in and talked to him on his level, cooed over his cattle and quietly sat at our kitchen table offering support and advice was just what he needed. Without them I don’t know how we would have coped.”
Sandra is encouraging people to hold a coffee morning this February to help local families get vital care in the community.
Sandra adds, “my tip would be that you just need to ask people to help, you will be surprised at what they will do – St Luke’s has touched so many lives like ours. It’s also important to go back to people after and tell them how much you raised. Have a clear plan and it all comes together”. St Luke’s Coffee Morning month is all through February and events can be as big or little as you like. Even £50 pays for an hour of intensive care from a St Luke’s specialist unit nurse. If you can do something incredible for your community, the charity is asking people to get in touch with the community fundraising team on 01752 964427 or visit www.stlukes-hospice.org.uk/coffee Go on, put the kettle on....

How to Fight a Winter Cold It’s that time of year again and as much as we love cosy nights in by the fire, the chilly weather can also spark the unwanted welcome of the winter cold. We’ve compiled a list of herbal remedies and immunity-boosting food to help you combat the dreaded cold and flu season. By Lauren Batten Garlic- Garlic contains allicin, a sulfuric compound that produces antiinflammatory antioxidants, meaning if you’re already sick garlic will help you get better faster. Furthermore, the oil in garlic acts as a natural expectorant that helps clear congestion. There are some rather quirky techniques out there when it comes to using garlic to fight a cold, including rubbing garlic into the soles of your feet! If you’d rather try something a bit more simple, why not blend it into a yummy garlic and tomato soup? Blueberries- Blueberries contain the most active antioxidants of any fresh fruit. They’re also jam packed full of vitamin C which helps to shorten the duration of cold symptoms. Making blueberry smoothies is not only an easy way to consume a large quantity at once but they also taste delicious! Why not try adding a dash of honey to make it an even sweeter treat? Chicken Soup- The go-to dish when we’re feeling blue, chicken soup is a favoured remedy across the nation, but does it actually help fight a cold? Tests have proven that it does in fact prevent certain white blood cells from causing inflammation. Plus the hot liquid helps relieve congestion as well as giving you that comforting feeling that we all desire when run down.

Dark Chocolate - As if we needed another reason to eat more chocolate- the chemical found in cocoa, theobromine, has been shown to help calm both acute and chronic coughs. A much tastier alternative to cough sweets! Echinacea- Echinacea is a herb native to areas east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Native Americans have been using it to treat infections for over 400 years. It contains flavonoids - chemicals that can help boost your immune system and reduce inflammation. The herb can be found in many supermarkets and enjoyed as a cup of tea- perfect for those cold evenings in front of the television. Eucalyptus oil- A tree native to Australia, the oil from Eucalyptus can silence a cough as well as clear your chest. Fill the bathroom sink with hot water and drop three to five drops of the oil into the water. Drape a towel over your head and bend over the sink. For best results do this for about five minutes and you’ll soon feel your sinuses open up as you breathe in the vapours. Alongside our recommendations, the NHS advises drinking plenty of fluids, getting plenty of rest and sticking to a healthly diet.

Make Your Home More Hygge Denmark is regarded as one of the happiest countries in the world and after researching the Danish home trend, Hygge (pronounced ‘heurgha’), we can see why. Hygge focuses on creating a cosy, comforting and content atmosphere whilst enjoying the good things in life surrounded by friends and family. It centres around being, not having, and on making a mindful connection with your surroundings.
I
n today’s technology-focused world, so many of us are guilty of having mentally removed ourselves from our homes and the present day. We often start to see ordinary tasks as too time-consuming and they become chore-like. Hygge is all about celebrating reality and living for the moment. In other words, it’s about embracing life’s little luxuries.
Less is More
Share Time With Others
Don’t clutter your home as simplicity is key. It is about experiences, not having stuff. Open-plan spaces and minimal decor emphasises a feeling of total relaxation.
Hygge is best enjoyed with others, so why not invite your friends and family over for a spread of wholesome food and a glass of red wine for that warm and cosy feeling?
Book shops are full of hardbacks on the subject, but instead of getting technical and over-thinking it, simply concentrate on making your home a warm place to enjoy, and put some focus back onto yourself. We’ve got some handy tips on how to create the perfect Hygge atmosphere in your home, and it’s easier than you might think.

Eating and Drinking Hot drinks which warm you to the core are important, particularly while keeping snug in the winter. So take time to enjoy that cup of coffee in the morning, and why not treat yourself to a cup of hot chocolate on a cold evening? A reason Danes are so happy is because they don’t tend to restrict themselves in life – if they want to eat big chunks of crusty warm bread, then they will, and you won’t see them turning down a delicious slice of cake. It’s all about balance.
Turn off the TV and Pick up a Good Book Hygge centres on your home and feelings rather than technology, so put your phone away and have a break from the internet. After all, there’s nothing better than curling up on the sofa with your favourite book. Even better, make a chunky coffee table the centre of your living room where you can socialise with friends, rather than having all of your furniture pointing at the TV.
Candles and Light
Soft Textures
Light is a critical element of the Hygge approach, and there is no better way to create this than by lighting a few candles. In fact, more candles are burned per person in Denmark than anywhere else in Europe (according to the European Candle Association). Lamps, fairy lights and open fires will also create a feeling of well-being and happiness within your home.
Snuggle up with a blanket, oversized shawl and a cuppa and watch the world go by. Soft textures throughout the home are important, so cover the sofa with cushions and throws and layer up the bed with blankets. Get even cosier by updating your loungewear. Try jumpers, loose tops, thick socks and harem trousers to help you relax in comfort, whilst keeping warm!
Back to Nature
Hygge at Work
To give your home that warm and sheltered atmosphere, Hygge focuses on bringing the outdoors inside by using natural fire light, plants, wood decor and neutral colours. Spending time outside is also important, not just for Hygge, but in general. Head out for a cycle, or drive to a beautiful spot and go for a walk.
Hygge can even be bought into the office to help improve those long stressful days at work. Sprucing up your desk with pictures that make you smile and keeping snug knitwear nearby will instantly lift your mood. Bond with your colleagues over lunch break rather than scrolling through social media remember Hygge is all about togetherness.

What will 2017 look like for you financially? By Mike LeGassick
T
rust me when I say that whatever it is you are planning on doing, this time next year, you’ll wish you had started today! There is an old proverb that says the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today.
With the Christmas spend now gone, January is a time when we need to look ahead and plan for the next financial 12 months. If you are a Charles Dickens fan, now that the joy of A Christmas Carol, much like the ghost of Jacob Marley has passed, you will remember from David Copperfield, Mr Micawber’s famous, and oft-quoted, recipe for happiness: “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen shillings and six pence, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.” In my experience as a Lifestyle Financial Planner, most of the people I help simply want to know that they will at least be financially comfortable. I think Woody Allen said it best, “Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons!” And don’t forget, nobody ever went broke saving money! As a Lifestyle Financial Planner, everything I advise on, and I do mean everything, ultimately boils down to 2 basic fundamentals that affect every individual; We either live too long or we die too soon. It is as simple as that. Living too long doesn’t sound bad at all, but if you have nothing to live on then you aren’t really ‘living’ you are merely existing and that can be a difficult and miserable place to be. Alternatively, you may live a long life and leave a fortune behind because you worried too much that your life savings would not sustain you in retirement and as such you kept putting off your ‘bucket list’ until you discovered that you suddenly ran out of that most precious of commodities, time and then all of your ‘one day’ dreams are in tatters because you have all of the money, but none of the time. Now that is a real sin! After all, you can’t take it with you. Who wants to be remembered as the richest person in the cemetery? What a pointless title that would be. At the other end of the scale you die too soon. If you have no provisions in place then not only do you leave loved ones
38 January 2017
behind to grieve, but they may also be saddled with a whole lot of financial hardship because there was no life cover in place to protect them and no income left to pay the bills and bring up the children. Can you imagine how you would feel in this predicament? This is why I became a ‘Lifestyle’ Financial Planner. Basically, I help clients to identify, achieve and maintain their desired lifestyle regardless of whatever happens. Armed with the right tools and mind-set, I realised some years ago, that I could help ANY client, ANYWHERE.
Let me say that again.
Every client I have ever spoken to wants the same outcome and that outcome is a secure lifestyle of their choice. Lifestyle is different for everyone and that is what I love about my job.
Precious time is slipping away and we all know that the older we get the quicker time seems to pass us by. And then sooner than you imagined you can’t do some things anymore. Aches and pains creep in, knees and hips need replacing, you’re just worn out, knackered. Next stop is a wheelchair and final stop is you are dead. Sorry to put you on a downer, but time is our most precious commodity so never forget that and use it wisely.
To some it’s about climbing mountains, sailing a yacht or travelling around the world. For others, it might simply mean being able to live a comfortable, sedate lifestyle at home. Perhaps you just want to be financially independent and be able to give to charities that are close to your heart. The real truth about money. It’s about time you hear about the real truth about money, not another sales pitch. The real truth about money isn’t if this fund is better than that fund or if one pension plan is better than the other. This is just white noise. It’s about something completely different and much more important. The danger is that investments, pensions, ISAs, - the boring ‘money stuff’ becomes the focus, none of which matters. In fact, this type of talk will bore most people to death. They fail to answer the BIG questions. All this ‘product stuff’ is subjective and revolves around opinion. Besides and more importantly, none of it revolves around the truth. The Truth about Money changes people’s lives. It revolves around one undeniable fact. A fact that no one can argue with. THAT LIFE IS NOT A REHEARSAL!

LIFE IS NOT A REHEARSAL!
This is an undeniable fact that none of us can argue with. Once you get your head around this inconvenient truth, the quicker you can have a deeper understanding of just what it is you want to do with your life while you still have a say in the matter. The real truth about money is how your money can and should support you in achieving the lifestyle you desire. At Manning and Company, we help our clients to identify, achieve and maintain their desired lifestyle. We help our clients take care of their money so they can live the life they want today, tomorrow and the rest of their lives without ever having to worry about running out of money. Life’s too short to leave money to chance. Manning and Company, financial advice that makes a difference!

THE CHESTNUT APPEAL BREAKWATER SWIM20 17 The Sixth Annual Chestnut Appeal swim across Plymouth Sound will take place on Sunday 13th August with a swim time of 08.00.
S
et within the Historic Plymouth Sound, swimmers will leave Commercial Wharf on the Barbican by boat, be taken to the Breakwater, where they will enter the water and swim the 2.2 miles across the Sound before reaching land on Tinside Beach next to the Art Deco Tinside Pool. Registration for the 2017 Plymouth Breakwater swim is £45 and we ask that all those who take part try to raise a minimum of £50 through sponsorship. “It’s a great event,” said David Squires, Events Manager at the Chestnut Appeal, “this year we had 260 swimmers from across the UK complete the swim and to date have raised around £30,000 for the charity” The money raised from the Breakwater Swim and the Chestnut Appeals’ other sponsored swims this year has topped the £50,000 mark and will help the charity continue their work across Devon and Cornwall. Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men. Over 47,000 men are
diagnosed with the disease every year, that’s more than 130 men every day. One in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime. Staggering statistics, especially when current studies show less than 30% of men know where the prostate is, let alone what it does. Your help will make a real difference in the community. The Chestnut Appeal has recently funded robotic surgery in the region, and has now been able to fund an Ultrasound-MRI Fusion Scanner for Targeted Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer. The Scanner will soon be online at Derriford Hospital with the first patients benefitting from the advancement of Targeted Diagnosis of Prostate Cancer in the New Year. The aim of the Chestnut Appeal is to bring MRI Fusion to all the major hospitals across Devon & Cornwall. The Breakwater swim is a big challenge and all those who take part need to be able to swim the distance in a pool and have experience of Open Water Swimming. “It’s a swim with great tradition and its great that we can be part of that. We have seen a lot of people over the years following what their ancestors did and swim from the Breakwater. Why not make it your challenge for 2017?” said David Squires at the Chestnut Appeal. Registration for the event is through this link https://origintickets.co.uk/store/?event=189 Entry to the Plymouth Breakwater Swim includes; full water safety support from Event Water Safety, an event swim cap, water and an end of swim snack. The Chestnut Appeal has other swims in 2017 including; Drakes Island in July, St Michaels Mount in August and Burgh Island in September.
