BUSINESS PROFILE Beacon Electrical proudly serves the local area with a huge range of home appliances and fantastic customer service to match. We speak with Mark Higgins, one of the company Directors, about how the business has developed and evolved over the years to become the go-to electrical company that it is today.
Mark tells us about how it’s, “a proper family business,” which was started 40 years ago by his father, Chris Higgins. He was working in the dockyard at the time, and with a young family at home he decided to earn an extra income by working in the evenings. He started Beacon Electrical, focusing on house wiring, lighting and heating for trade, and in 1976 he opened a shop near their home in Beacon Park. A few years later the shop moved to premises on Beacon Park Road, where it still stands today serving as both a store and head office, and Chris left the dockyard to focus solely on his business. At the time a lot of wholesalers weren’t particularly customer-friendly, which Chris saw as a problem. Mark explains, “What he did was set up a shop with lots of displays of the products, and customers could come in and speak to someone and get a sensible answer, and speak to someone who could
give friendly and professional advice.” From here, the business continued to grow. In 1984 the Plymstock branch was opened, and in 1988 Chris ventured into the high street, opening a store on Fore Street in Totnes. It was around this time that Mark took his first steps into the family business, working in the Totnes store during his school holidays. Following a difficult recession, the next branch was opened in Pennycomequick in 2004, and it became the first Rangemaster centre in the country. “It is now the first ever Hotpoint sponsored shop in the country, offering a much wider range of Hotpoint Indesit and Whirlpool products on display than we could ever fit into our other stores.” Then the final store was opened only three years ago in Kingsbridge, and it’s proven itself to be a very popular location. Mark came into the business full time when he finished university, and he helps to run it alongside his brother, Nick. Their father, Chris, had taken a step back from the business recently as he looked after his wife while she was ill, and sadly, she passed away last year. Mark tells us, “Dad will always be involved because it’s his business and he set it up from nothing. The last couple of years have been tough, but he’s starting to move back into the business now, mostly to oversee the running of it from behind the scenes.” A lot has changed at Beacon Electrical since it first started, mainly due to market

trends and changing consumer habits. “We have five branches now, and this year we doubled the size of our warehouse. That’s been really important to us, because we need to make sure that we buy the right products, at the right prices, at the right time. The business has changed quite rapidly, particularly over the last 5-7 years, with the internet and people’s buying habits changing,” Mark explains.
“

T
he most important thing is that customers realise that the lowest prices aren’t necessarily reserved for the biggest retailers. People usually expect the best customer service to be from the smaller stores, but they expect big price tags to come with it, however, at Beacon Electrical they can expect great service and low prices.
Because we’re cheaper on the extra services such as installation, we often end up being cheaper overall
And despite being much smaller than their national competitors, Beacon Electrical can absolutely go head-to-head with them as far as deals and prices are concerned. “With the main online retailers the focus is on the lowest price and then you pay a lot
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
- BEACON ELECTRICAL for the services, however we know that it’s the price the customer pays for everything that really counts. Because we’re cheaper on the extra services such as installation, we often end up being cheaper overall.
“
“
The secret is to have strong relationships with the manufacturers, it’s essential
“We’re trying to develop it all the time, but we like to think that we can offer a full service for anything. Whether it’s fitting a cooker, or built-in washing machine, we can offer those services alongside the product. It means that customers don’t have to go anywhere else, we can do it all here.” It also doesn’t bother Mark if a customer finds a product cheaper elsewhere, because the relationship they have with their manufacturers, and specifically with the Whirlpool Corporation, which covers Hotpoint, Whirlpool and Indesit, means
that they can have a no-quibble guarantee that they will match the price. “The secret is to have strong relationships with the manufacturers, it’s essential,” Mark tells us. The staff at Beacon Electrical are also more than happy to offer discounts for customers who would like to buy more than one product. Bespoke packages can be put together and deals can be made. Mark is proud of the knowledge his staff hold - “Every member of the team can put together a package with competitive prices and that’s usually difficult to find. All of our staff are trained up to a high level and we see their role as a career, and quite often they go all the way through to retirement with us.” This is why Mark would like to invite customers into their stores rather than relying on the internet. He tells us, “There aren’t many shops that have such a big range on show anymore. Most of the time customers just have to look at the product online and rely on reviews, but people
should just talk to us. Rather than spending three hours trawling through the internet, they could have a quick conversation with us and we can easily pin-point the right product for them.” Looking ahead, Mark is keen to continue working on the fantastic relationships Beacon Electrical has with manufacturers and customers alike. If any area of the business is to be developed next, it would be their online presence - “We’re not interested in taking over the world, we’re quite happy looking after our local customers. But if we can reach out to more people online, then it’s probably our next plan. You never know when an opportunity will come up.”

GENERATION RENT
First-time buyers were once typically in their early twenties, but with more young people living with their parents than ever before, what problems are they facing when it comes to buying a home?
A
s rising house prices continue to hit the headlines in the UK, more and more young adults are staying put with their parents. And it’s no surprise when we take a look at the figures – the average house price in the South West in October 2016 was £240,322. Just 20 years ago, this figure was £63,110 (Land Registry). It makes sense then, that in 2016 25% of people aged 20-34 were living at home with their parents (ONS). In some of these cases, the person has already had a taste of independent living, but they’ve been forced back to their childhood home to save for a hefty mortgage deposit. Typically, lenders require a 10% deposit, however a larger deposit is likely to attract more lenders and better rates. And although the absolute minimum is 5%, a Which? National Property Survey found that the average first-time buyer deposit is 17%. So for the average South West property costing £240,322, the buyer will need a 10% deposit of £24,000. This is before any other costs are taken into account – stamp duty is required on properties costing over £125,000, lender fees can be anything up to £2,000, solicitor’s fees can cost just as much, and property surveys and land registry fees mustn’t be forgotten.
For the buyer, while proving that they can afford to pay off a mortgage each month is important, it’s finding the money to save up for the deposit and other costs which can prove difficult. Buying a home with someone else, be that a very close friend, relative or partner, is much easier, as a joint income is likely to be much more impressive than a lone one. This will also make a deposit target easier to reach. In December 2015 the government rolled out the Help to Buy ISA. On opening the account up to £1,200 can be deposited, followed by a £200 maximum limit each month, which is a fairly realistic figure for most savers. The main benefit of opening this ISA is the bonus which is rewarded when the money is taken out to put down on a home – a tax free bonus of 25% of the amount in the ISA will be added. So if £12,000 is saved, a bonus of £3,000 (the maximum bonus available) will be added, taking this total up to £15,000. It’s not suitable for everyone though, so it’s worth researching it and speaking with an advisor at a bank which provides the ISA. Depending on whereabouts in the country you are, rent can be incredibly expensive too. This is why young people are heading back
to their parental homes in their droves in an effort to cut the costs of sky-high rent and bills, leaving money spare to start piling into a savings account, such as a Help to Buy ISA. For those who can’t move in with parents (or would simply rather not), the future looks bleak. According to the Office of National Statistics, rent is continuing to rise, with some areas hit harder than others. For a couple on minimum to average salaries, paying rent, council tax and bills, the option to save often isn’t there. Even if £100 can be scraped together to put into a savings account each month, it would take over 80 years to save up £10,000. It’s hardly motivating. For many, the opportunity to buy a house might simply never arise. In other European countries, owning a home isn’t very popular, and in Germany so many people rent that the rules surrounding landlords’ and tenants’ rights is a lot more thorough and in-depth, and beneficial to the tenants. Until renting is reviewed in the UK, young people may continue to struggle to settle in a home that is suitable for them and within their budget. Until then, moving back in with relatives might be the only option.
With the average UK salary standing at £26,500, and minimum wage paying just below £15,000 a year, saving up this huge sum of money is almost impossible for most people in their twenties. After covering the costs of rent, bills and transport each month, there isn’t usually much left. For those who do manage to save and are ready to hop onto the property ladder, the various mortgages, lenders, fees and rules can make the entire process confusing and sometimes more costly than expected. A mortgage advisor is a good option for any potential first-time buyer, as they will discuss the needs of the buyer and the mortgages that they can afford based on income and monthly expenditure.

A GUIDE TO BUYING Buying a brand new car might come with lots of perks, but they lose on average more than 27% of their value in the first 12 months, with just 10,000 miles on the clock, according to MoneySavingExpert.com. Buying a car that is at least one year old is usually better value for money, but what should you keep in mind when choosing a second hand car?
Running Costs A car might seem like an excellent price, but keeping it running from month to month could leave you out of pocket. Do your research before you browse the forecourt. It’s useful to have a few ideal cars in mind, with a good understanding of their running costs and reliability.
A smaller engine will be cheaper to run than a large one. A 1.2 – 1.4 litre engine is good and economical for most drivers, particularly those who are younger or less experienced. This will also affect the tax and insurance – if you have an ideal car in mind, set up an insurance quote on it to find out what premium you’ll be looking to pay on it. Cars are also placed into insurance groups numbered 1-50, with group 1 generally being the cheapest. It’s not always completely reliable, but it’s a good indication. Know what tax you’ll be paying for the car. Go online to check the tax and even the estimated fuel consumption. Remember that tax no longer transfers to new owners, but some private adverts still state that the car comes with a number of month’s tax. This is incorrect and must be bought as soon as you take ownership of the vehicle. Bear in mind that it’s best to buy a car at the start of the month because, for example, a car bought and taxed on 25th March will have the tax back-dated to the start of the month. Either declare it

off the road until the beginning of the next month, or be prepared to pay for a whole month’s tax that you won’t have used.
Your Requirements Think about your day-to-day activities and how you’ll be using the car. A three-door might be popular and slightly cheaper, but if you have children who need to sit in the back, a five-door will be more practical. If you need to fit children’s car seats, does it have ISOFIX? Is there enough boot space for you? Is there enough space in the passenger and back seats if you regularly travel with others? Will you need to tow a trailer? Is air-con important, and is the car the right size for you? If you have trouble parking or have a small driveway, consider a smaller car.
Quality & Condition If you don’t feel confident checking over the quality and condition of the car, then take someone with you who has more knowledge (it’s good to get a second
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
A SECOND HAND CAR opinion regardless). Does the car seem like it’s been well-looked after? Check for dents and scratches. Do the tyres look worn and in need of replacing? How many owners has it had and does the mileage match the age of the vehicle? When is the MOT due? Ask if there were any advisory notes so that you’re aware of potential problems and repairs. If you’re insured to drive other vehicles, request a test drive. Alternatively, ask the seller to drive it with you in the passenger seat, or take someone along who can test drive it for you. Check that the engine starts smoothly and listen out for any unusual noises. Check that the lights and horn work, and look over the windscreen wipers. Make an emergency stop to make sure the brakes are working efficiently, and make a three-point turn to check that it steers well.
Genuine sellers Ask for the car manual if they have it, and the logbook and any spare keys, plus any other relevant paperwork. A quick check online at Gov UK will give information on the MOT due date if you’re unsure. Another useful data check can be made via the AA website. It costs £18.99 to look
up one car, but it will check whether the car has outstanding finance, been written off, had a plate transfer, been recorded as stolen or has a mileage discrepancy. It’s well worth it if you’re buying from a private seller, although dealers will usually have checked this already.
Before you drive away Some dealers offer a week’s insurance with the vehicle which will allow you to drive it home before shopping around for a good deal. Some don’t offer this, and private sellers won’t, so check before you drive away. Take a smart phone with you so that you can look up and buy car insurance before you get behind the wheel - it’s illegal to drive without it, even if you’ve only just bought the car. If you still have comprehensive insurance on another car, you might be insured to drive your new one, so make sure that you’ve looked this up. Alternatively, ask the dealer to keep hold of the car while you go away to sort out insurance.
You’ll also have to tax the vehicle before you can drive it away. It’s quick and easy to do online, again, using a smart phone if you have one, or you can call or visit a nearby post office. Make sure that you have valid MOT and insurance before doing this. As the car won’t yet be registered in your name, you’ll need the 12-digit reference number on the New Keeper Supplement.

PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES To take a company and triple its turnover is no mean feat. To do it in four years and keep a good sense of humour is impressive. To also have two children in the same space of time, is, frankly, amazing, writes OM’s Duncan Little.
Y
et that’s exactly what husband and wife team, Sarah Haseler and former Royal Marine, Travis Chiddle, have done.
It’s been nearly two years since I first met them having walked through the doors of their business, Right Price Windows, based in the Newnham Industrial Estate, Plympton. “The time has flown past, hasn’t it!” says Sarah as I take a seat in her well organised office (home to a number of light hearted and colourful posters). We chat generally about how life has changed for them both since 2013. “We started with one staff member making windows and we have now expanded to the point where we have an excellent core team here. There’s been increased automation with state of the art computer systems to keep track on every part of the business.” The software allows them to be more efficient than their competitors, keeping them ahead of a constantly changing industry (where their standards meet the exacting requirements set by developers).
“
“
Success only comes about through hard work
The company’s good fortune has been down to the dedication of the team. Travis says being successful is nothing to do with luck but is achieved through sheer hard graft. “When we first started we would be here until ten at night,” says Travis. “The record was to finish work at four in the morning having started at seven the previous day.” He has a succinct message for budding entrepreneurs seeking advice: “Success only comes about through hard work, determination and your passion for the business; together with strong motivation and a belief in your ability to be the best.” These are the key ingredients which have helped them on their way to achieving a strong company grounded in solid ethics and good working practices. The
22 February 2017
predominant factor has been sacrificing their personal time and investing it in the firm’s growth. “You stay at work on a Saturday night and you never have the chance to switch off even though you’d like to do so,” continues Travis. Being a proud mum and dad is also a key part of their drive. (Theo is their youngest and is just three months old. He’s nestled into his dad’s arms as we quietly chat over mugs of coffee. Their eldest, Aneila, is coming up to her third birthday). “The real secret to success is not losing focus on your family life and your children and so to remember the important things in life which helps you to drive forward on a daily basis.”
high standards). It’s something which is certainly excellent news for the environmental conscious consumer.
It’s the company’s enthusiasm and its youthful approach which is getting them noticed in the wider building industry. It’s allowed the independent retailer to rapidly grow and so set their sights on the goal of moving into new, bigger premises later this year.
Helping people is very much at the core of Right Price Windows’ business plan. And, with the recent cold snap, more and more clients are turning to Sarah, Travis and the team to ask them to replace conservatory roofs with cost effective Guardian Conservatory roofing.
Their expansion has also led them to be a Eurocell approved fabricator - which is the leading brand for UPVC windows in the UK.
Not only does the end effect look good but it’s also great for keeping conservatories warm during the cold winter months (and also cooler during the warmer summer weather).
As such, the standards they can provide are exceptionally high as the product’s qualities are its robustness, durability and its long lifespan. It’s also environmentally friendly with a low carbon footprint, and consists of parts constructed from recycled material (tested to rigorously

The domestic market is growing for Right Price Windows as home owners opt away from selling their property and are increasingly deciding to invest money on having better insulation or on improving the appearance of their properties.
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
AND ENTREPRENEURS It means that Right Price Windows are the number one ‘go to’ people in the area and, due to their high standards, products are manufactured on-site using British hardware to ensure consistent and excellent quality in their work. It’s seen repeat business from customers (some going back to more than 20 years ago when the company was under different ownership).
“
“
I never thought I’d be doing what I do now
Travis and Sarah are always keen to see the profits being reinvested back into the firm so they can nurture its continued growth. As such, there are now 16 members of staff with access to a fleet of six vans. The expansion has led to an increase in their patch as their work is being sought across Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Cornwall.
It’s a far cry from their original professional backgrounds. Travis trained as a Royal Marine and did five and a half years’ service in the military - which included a stint in Northern Ireland. He left the Service ten years ago and is very proud to have served the Nation. It means
the family are keen to support the current and former military community of Plymouth (and so offer a discount for them). Travis reflects on his time on the military and says he believes the training to become a Royal Marine, together with the wearing of the coveted ‘Green Beret,’ gave him the confidence, and ability, to do what he is doing today. Sarah’s past was based with one of the country’s leading television production companies, located in Plymouth, where she worked in marketing, multimedia production and account management. “Their way of thinking had a big effect on me,” she says. “Many of my former colleagues have built up their own businesses by working in what was an entrepreneurial atmosphere.”
Sarah’s one piece of escapism from her strong work ethic is her performances as a singer. Her group, Jaded Angel, has been consistently popular over the past six years. They perform a variety of classic rock and pop hits at weddings and functions across Plymouth and the surrounding area. She practices in the workshop area and the team’s factory manager also joins in (upon occasion)! With an expanding business and a growing family, Sarah and Travis certainly have their work cut out! Yet, one thing is clear, their business acumen, sheer hard work and dedication to customer satisfaction means this year will surely be one of their most successful yet.
“We soaked up the type of thinking which leads to success and it gave me an insight into how to run a business, with an open way of thinking, being aware of the possibilities which are out there. It made me want to be successful.” Looking back to her previous workplace allows Sarah the chance to reflect on where she is today. “I never thought I’d be doing what I now do but am so pleased that my life has taken this pathway which has allowed me to prove myself in what is traditionally seen as a male dominated industry.”

THREE IN A ROW
I
n December, the Duke of Cornwall Hotel hosted the culmination of the Radio Plymouth’s ‘Three in a Row’ competition.
We have a winner!
We joined forces with Ras Al Khaimah Tourism, Doubletree by Hilton Marjan Island Resort & Spa and Have a Nice Stay Travel to give our listeners the chance to win a fabulous, all-inclusive holiday for two people including flights to the exotic Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. Listeners were asked to phone in to Radio Plymouth when they heard the Three in a Row ‘cue to call’. On each occasion one selected listener was then asked three questions and given only 3 seconds to answer each question. If they answered all three questions correctly in the allotted time they were awarded a ‘boarding pass’ which granted them entry onto the finals night flight! The lucky boarding pass winners arrived in the knowledge that they could leave The Duke of Cornwall with the first prize of a holiday! After boarding their flight and enjoying the in-flight refreshments captain Tim Manns and co-pilot Jon White helped each entrant choose a number which was displayed on a white board at the front of the aircraft. The rest was left to chance as the winning number had earlier that evening been locked in the ‘black box’. With the help of stewardesses Jemma Jones and Hayley Bowden, as well as Have A Nice

Stay Travel’s Ian Calvert, the number was revealed to the expectant audience. The winner of the amazing, all-inclusive holiday was Margaret Codognotto who, with her partner, will be jetting off to the Emirates in June.

Radio Plymouth would like to thank everybody who entered the competition making this such an exciting event, and also the sponsors whom without their sponsorship this trip of a life time would not have happened. Many thanks to The Duke of Cornwall Hotel too for all their assistance and hospitality in putting this event together. And, of course, we wish Margaret a wonderful holiday!

We Did it Together! I
t really is exciting news for men in the region. No longer will they have to travel great distances for privately funded biopsies, we can do this on the NHS in this region thanks to the support of many people in the community. We have been helped by businesses, groups and associations including Rotary Clubs, Plymouth Argyle Football Club, UK Calendar Girls, Pollard Builders, as well as swimmers, runners, trekkers, fundraisers, office cake sales and stall holders to name just a few. Communities really do make a difference to the work of The Chestnut Appeal for Prostate Cancer and we appreciate every bit of support we get, large and small. The Chestnut Appeal for Prostate Cancer is now able to provide the very latest in diagnostic equipment for faster diagnosis of prostate cancer starting at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth! It is the most up to date in the country and the first of its kind in the region. Lesley-Ann Simpson, the charity’s director says, “What I think is great about The Chestnut Appeal is that donors can see what their fundraising efforts can do and we are so very grateful for

all the help we receive in the community, YOU really do make a difference. Without help we wouldn’t be able to provide state of the art equipment, support nurses or raise awareness of this most common cancer in men, so thank you all very much.” She went on to say, “This fundraising campaign has meant that we are now able to provide the very latest in diagnostic equipment for faster diagnosis of prostate cancer starting at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth! At a cost of £105,000 UltrasoundMRi Fusion really is state of the art and it has just arrived in the region but this is not the end of the story, we are soon to have a second one in East Devon and it is hoped that with support of the public we can install others in Torbay and Truro as and when funds allow”. The MRI-TRUS Fusion device provides precise targeting and the best possible prostate biopsy currently available. Whether for a first biopsy or as a repeat biopsy, patients have a greater peace of mind knowing that the chance of detecting significant prostate cancer is maximised whilst minimising the risk of false negative results.

BUSINESS PROFILE Struggling for ideas on how to keep the kids busy? Why not take them to Jump? The exciting soft play area, based at the Christian Mill Business Park, in Crownhill, is packed full of safe, exciting and imaginative FUN!

our child can enjoy the amazing facilities, which are packed into 19,000 square feet of laughter and adventure. They can have a great time on the play frames, on the indoor inflatable, football pitch, toddler area or relax over a well earnt bite to eat in the café area, writes Duncan Little. The centre has been open for more than 10 years with parties taking place there every day. It’s a key venue for Plymouth with thousands of youngsters enjoying safe play areas and great food every year. Mums and dads can relax with the safe knowledge that all staff members are first aid trained, with security and safety being the number one priority for managers at the site.
“Every child receives a wrist band on entrance and the parents receive the corresponding ticket. This ensures a safe exit after a fun visit,” says Tom. Gates and exit doors are controlled electronically and safety instructions are given to every customer on entrance for a fantastic visit and safe play.

And what fun they can have! This centre has it all - everything from parties including Laser Storm through to ball pools and daily activities. There’s a separate toddler area with a sensory room with its magical musical touch pads and bubble tubes. For the adventurous 3 to 12 year olds, there are various astro slides, tube slides, soft play and climbing areas. The party atmosphere is always in high gear with cheerful staff entertaining up to five parties every week day and 12 parties at the weekend. “It’s great value for money,” says Tom. “We give them squash on arrival and then the two hour party starts! They have one hour to play in our main area, have fun in one of our five themed party rooms with party food supplied and a choice of activities to keep them in the party spirit. You can stay as long as you like afterwards during peak times.” If that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, your

We look for people with a theatrical background who are into music. We like to think we provide one of the best children’s party packages in Plymouth.”

“There are independent inspections and we have staff members located at our play frames. We do as much as we can to ensure a happy and safe environment,” explains Tom Sutherland, the centre’s General Manager.

You can even choose the theme of the room where the food and activities take place – everything from an enchanted castle through to outer space. Perhaps your son or daughter loves Jurassic Park? If so, there’s a dinosaur themed area! There’s even a safari room if they prefer the idea of pretending to watch lions and tigers! Every birthday child also gets a free month’s pass to Jump as a gift.
The complex is one of three sites which, alongside Bristol and Cardiff, have enjoyed national success with awards for their innovative approach to children’s play.

- JUMP Meeting General Manager Tom provides tremendous reassurance over the smooth running of the centre. As a proud dad himself, he loves to see his own two year old daughter, Millie, playing with friends in the toddler area. “We’ve had her birthday party here and she always wants to come here. For her, this place really is a second home!

They’re introducing a loyalty discount card which allows a discount for every visit
After the happy, but tired children have gone home for the day, the tidying up begins! The team are constantly looking for ways to help parents get the best deals. They’re introducing a loyalty discount card which allows a discount for every visit. It’s perhaps not surprising to hear loyal customers travel from as far away as Liskeard and Looe with families also flocking to Jump from all over Devon. And if you’ve previously booked a party with the team, you’ll have a chance to receive a 10% discount for return bookings. Tom is rightly proud of his lowest price party costs which currently start from £10 per child Monday to Friday term time.
There are currently some great deals at the centre including a half price after school offer. So, visit Jump from 3.30pm Monday to Friday, during term time, and children aged between two to 12 years old pay just £3.50! Mums and dads also receive free entry all day every day. Don’t forget, there are daily activities including weekends and school holidays. There are exciting events and activities throughout the year. Jump has a fantastic Facebook page and website where you can check out the latest offers and events. There are always loads of great value deals taking place! “The centre has a daily maintenance check with staff and professional cleaning schedules. We also have regular deep cleans and maintenance for the soft play area including all the ball pools, and high level cleaning to ensure it has an exceptionally good level of hygiene for our guests.”
Its smooth running means a busy daily routine for the team. Tom, or a fellow manager, will start at eight in the morning when they inspect the building and make sure everything is up and running (including the crucially important coffee machines!) Staff receive their morning briefing at 8am (ahead of a 10am opening) so they know exactly what tasks need to be completed and where everyone will be to make sure the centre and parties run smoothly. Managers play a crucial role in the day to day running of the centre as they work alongside staff in the café, reception and activities area. It means they receive direct feedback from customers and colleagues. This gives customers the ability to easily approach them and let them know when something is working well or if something needs attention. Towards the end of the day is the evening laser party for children who are over the age of 8. It’s great for team building and also to help youngsters develop their problem solving capabilities.

Not Your Average Pancake! Remember to stock up on flour and eggs before Tuesday 28th February! Shrove Tuesday comes the day before Ash Wednesday when Lent begins, making it a day of gorging on food before the 40-day fasting period. In some countries Shrove Tuesday is called Mardi Gras, which literally means ‘Fat Tuesday’. The tradition of eating pancakes was to use up rich foods such as milk, eggs and sugar before Lent began, and we still enjoy the tradition to this day. It is usually saved for those with a sweet tooth and a love of puddings, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Have you ever tried pancakes with savoury toppings, or used them as a base for breakfast or dinner? Try out some of our favourite recipes from BBC Good Food, and you might find yourself eating pancakes all year round!
Quesadilla pancakes 2 red peppers, chopped into small pieces 140g Red Leicester, grated 4 tbsp chopped fresh coriander 8 pre-made pancakes 1 tbsp butter 1 garlic clove, crushed ½ tsp ground cumin 400g can kidney beans, drained Juice of 1 lemon 1 red chilli, deseeded if you don’t like it too hot, sliced (optional) 2 avocados, sliced 2 Little Gem lettuces, sliced
Serves 4
1
Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Scatter the peppers, cheese and coriander over 4 pancakes. Season well and cover each one with another pancake to make a sandwich. Place the quesadilla pancakes on baking sheets and cook for 5 mins in the oven until the cheese starts melting (you may need to do this in batches).
2
Warm the butter in a saucepan, add the garlic and cook for 1 min until fragrant, then add the cumin and beans. Stir for 2 mins, then roughly mash. Season, stir through half the lemon juice, spoon into a serving dish and top with the chilli, if using. Toss the avocado in the rest of the lemon juice, then serve the quesadillas with the beans, lettuce and avocado.
Potato pancakes 250g cold mashed potato, or 2 mediumsize floury potatoes, cut into chunks 75g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 eggs 125ml milk 1 rounded tbsp finely snipped chives 1 tsp sunflower oil Knob of butter Crispy bacon and scrambled eggs to serve, if you like

Makes 12-15
1
If you’ve got potatoes not mash, cook them in boiling water until tender. Drain well and press through a potato ricer or mash. Weigh out 250g and cool.
2
Sieve the flour and baking powder onto cooled mash. Whisk eggs and milk together and add to the potato mix with the chives. Whisk the batter until smooth.
3
Heat a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add ½ tsp sunflower oil and a dot of butter. When the fat is hot, start to cook the pancakes. Add 1 tbsp of batter for each pancake and cook 4 at a time. Cook for about 1 min until the underside is golden brown and small bubbles appear.
4
Flip the pancakes and cook until golden. Remove from the pan and keep warm while you cook the remaining pancakes in the same way, adding a tiny bit of oil and butter to the pan as and when needed. Serve the pancakes in stacks with creamy scrambled egg and crisp rashers of streaky bacon.

BUSINESS PROFILE - EVANS HARVEY SOLICITORS Standing proudly at the top of Crownhill village is a solicitor’s firm which has served its community for almost 40 years. The team at Evans Harvey is like one big, happy family, headed by Stephen Hall, and the warm, friendly atmosphere they create is the reason behind their ongoing success.
T
his is a firm which focuses on the needs of the local people rather than on big, commercial clients, offering a full range of services including property and conveyancing, wills, tax and probate, family and matrimonial law, personal injury, company and commercial, employment, litigation and inheritance claims. The team’s combined experience well exceeds 100 years, and Stephen works closely with them having become a Director in 2008 after joining the practice the previous year as a solicitor. He tells us, “We offer a very personal service for clients and if they come to us with a problem, we try to offer a simple, no-nonsense approach to it, in straightforward language so that they understand.” Often, although the relationship starts off formal, after a few meetings they’re very much on a first-name basis with their clients, and the team regularly go beyond the call of duty. Stephen explains how they will never ask a client in for a meeting if they’re unwell – they will visit them instead. Rarely are any fees charged for this service. Whether the client must be visited in hospital or in a nursing home, it’s all part of the job at Evans Harvey.
To ensure that their customer service is the best that it can be, clients are asked for feedback once their matter has been dealt with, and for every feedback form filled in the firm will donate money to St Luke’s Hospice. Stephen is proud to tell to us that the feedback is generally very positive, but if they spot an opportunity to improve on their performance, then they will do so. “We have an open-door policy to all clients. Of course life is much easier if appointments are booked, but we will always see our clients and never turn anyone away. It is what I qualified for, I qualified to help people.” Evans Harvey hold free drop-in clinics during the week. On a Tuesday 10am12pm they deal with Wills, Trusts, LPAs and Probate, and on a Wednesday 10am-12pm they will deal with family law matters. To take pressure off the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, they also offer a clinic on a Tuesday 5pm-6pm which covers general matters. To further assist the community, Evans Harvey is one of very few law firms to offer appointments on a Saturday morning for clients who work during the week. Everything that’s put in place here has the needs of the community in mind. The firm is also experienced in dealing with more complex cases. Stephen explains, “We’re quite a small firm and you usually find that complicated Chancery matters are dealt with by specialised firms, but I’ve
Evans Harvey Solicitors Please mention OM Magazine when responding to adverts
been dealing with them for decades and I’m well respected in that field of law.” It’s not just the community Stephen serves; he also puts a lot of time and focus into looking after his team. “The staff we have here are brilliant, and it couldn’t work without them. All the people who work here make Evans Harvey, I’m just a tiny cog. I’m no more important than anyone else and we all have equally important roles to play.” Stephen is also keen to help young people into the industry – a law student has been based with the firm recently to complete her training contract and gain vital experience, and Stephen has sponsored her final year of studying before she hopefully goes back to them as a newly-qualified solicitor. Once this has happened, he’s looking forward to taking on another youngster and helping them through the process too. This work ethic and proactive approach to the industry means that Stephen is looking to expand the business to enable him to deal with a growing, loyal client base. “We’re looking for the Practice to continue for decades and decades to come. It will be a law firm that’s the pride of Plymouth and the pride of the people who work here.” Stephen believes that the reason behind Evans Harvey’s success is clear - “It’s a very happy team and we work extremely hard. Everybody has the client’s interest at heart. I’m very proud of Evans Harvey, and it’s all down to the staff and their dedication.”

What is Your Number? By Mike LeGassick
H
ave you ever wondered just how much money you need for the rest of your life? Chances are you haven’t because life has a habit of getting in the way. In this digital age, we all seem to be leading busier lives than ever and the time seems to pass us by so quickly. You see, people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan and don’t beat yourself up about it because the vast majority of us fall into this category.
So, what IS your number? £1 million, £2 million, £5 million a lot more, a lot less? How much do you need? I believe that the purpose of real financial planning is to first get the client to answer this question. It’s not about products and investments. Those are just tools in the bag that we use from time to time to get the job done. Unless I am confident that I really understand my clients and can get them to answer this question then I don’t have any right to sell or recommend any form of financial product. Why would you spend any money on anything that you did not know the full benefit of or was not confident of it getting you to where you want to be in the future? It would be nonsensical and you certainly wouldn’t do it for any other important purchase. Just like any form of saving. Retirement planning is all about starting with the end result first. If a client tells me that they want £1 million by age 60 we then have a firm target to work back from. This makes sense and is measurable. If I simply recommended a client invest £300 per month into a pension they may well feel that they are moving in the right direction, but they will have no idea what this will actually be worth in the future. Working backwards helps determine how much, what risk level and the time scale needed is to achieve their objective. It just makes sense. Then and only then do I feel confident enough and entitled to make a sensible recommendation. It isn’t rocket science and the client has a deep understanding of how we have arrived at the solution. Quite simply, it will make sense. So, financial planning used in the right context does work providing the client will just tell us what their number is. So how much should I put away for my retirement? If you opt for a personal pension, the simple answer is as much as possible and as early as possible. There’s a very rough rule of thumb for what to contribute for a comfortable retirement. Take the age you start your pension and halve it. Put this % of your pre-tax salary
40 February 2017
aside each year until you retire. This is a very rough guide. When I explain this to people it is normally greeted with a sharp intake of breath and me having to pick them up off the floor, but let’s just think about this for a moment. Let’s assume that you are currently aged 21 and wish to retire at 60 with an income of £12,000 a year in today’s money. We will also assume that you will live to age 85. Well if your pension pays you £12,000 per year from age 60 to age 85 then you will have received total income of £300,000 during your retirement, however, you did want that income in today’s money so that means we must factor in inflation. If we assume that the cost of living/inflation is approximately 3% per year, then what does £12,000 in today’s money need to be in 39 years’ time when you hit the big 60? Well let me tell you that £12,000 needs to be worth £38,004 in 39 years’ time when you are 60. So, if you want an income of £38,004 for 25 years then this means a total amount of income received of £950,100 in your 25 years of retirement! That is the damaging effect of the inflation monster. If you amass a pension savings pot of £950,100 between age 21 and 60 and you achieve a 4% per annum investment return, then this will kick out the regular £38,004 annual income you need. Putting it another way, is it realistic to believe that if you save £100 per month for 39 years that this will be enough to get you what you desire? £100 per month is £1,200 per year. £1,200 per year for 39 years means that you will have invested in total £46,800. Let’s accept for the purposes of this example that this has grown to approximately £190,000 assuming an annual investment return, net of charges of 6% was achieved. If this was the case, then you would be £760,100 short of the £950,100 needed. Now realistically, you would probably increase what you save as your income increases over time and thus your £190,000 would no doubt be considerably higher. Additionally, if you are employed,
Call OM Plymouth 01752 691007
your employer would also be contributing for 39 years and this would further increase your chances of hitting your target fund value. Don’t forget that inflation is relentless and as such, when you start to receive your £38,004 per annum from age 60, ideally this needs to keep increasing throughout your retirement to keep pace with inflation and this is every bit as important as it was in your accumulation phase when you were saving for all those years. As of the time of writing all personal pensions are accessible in part or in whole from age 55 and allow the policyholder to take up to 25% of their pot as a tax free lump sum. Most people take this option in my experience. All income taken after your tax-free cash is taxed as unearned income and is taxed along with any other income you receive through the normal tax bandings. If none of this works for you then you will probably have to resort to some other plan or a combination of the following to help you achieve your objective: • Save more • Start earlier • Work longer and retire later • Take a higher level of investment risk to try get the level of investment return that is required I think you can now see the basic mathematics behind these figures, but perhaps more importantly understand the level of contribution that needs to be made to achieve this.
