March 2020 07
We have all certainly seen some of the worst weather in a while hit the UK and indeed the Southwest since the start of this year and needless to say, most gardens are looking worse for wear after the winter months have taken their toll. Life gets in the way and sometimes it can be a struggle to keep it looking in tip-top condition, especially when the weather is as terrible as it has been lately. If you’re struggling to find the time to tame your overgrown garden, and you are operating on a keen budget then worry not as Man for all Seasons is on hand to transform your garden into a glorious haven that you won’t be embarrassed to show off during the summer months. With a wide range of services available, Luke Foster and his team can deliver a host of reliable and affordable services to maintain your garden throughout the year.
R
unning any successful business these days isn’t easy, especially in the South West where competition is high and the challenges that coincide with running a business can be difficult at times. Luke Foster of Man for all Seasons has been through the thick and the thin since starting up his gardening business in 2008, but ultimately his passion for gardening and commitment to providing excellent service and customer care has pushed his business to be one of the most thriving in the city. After the OM team met with Luke in March 2018, we caught up with him again to find out how far the business has come in that time, what’s changed and what his next move is for this top-quality gardening and landscaping business. Man for all Seasons is a Plymouth-based garden, grounds and landscaping business set up by managing director, Luke Foster in 2008 when he was only 17 years old. Having been interested in gardening from a young age, Luke decided to qualify in both Horticulture, as well as Landscape Design, and now has all the tools, knowledge and skills required to follow through with any job handed to him.
08 March 2020
Over his years in business, Man for all Seasons has developed the services they offer, with a wide range of services now available to both domestic and commercial customers, from basic lawn care and cutting to complete garden redesigns.
Luke tells us - “I like to meet with clients and give them what they need, whether that be basic garden maintenance or a brand new garden design.” The business has developed rapidly since we last saw Luke and his team in 2018, with the most recent change being their move to a brand new, state of the art premises in the heart of Reynolds Park, just off Bell Close in Plympton. After spending two years based at the Millfields Trust in Stonehouse, Luke decided it was time to push the company forward and open up the possibilities for expansion. “We didn’t have room to grow there, the facilities weren’t what we needed as we now have 4 vans with trailers so parking is essential and we need an office to run from
Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007
Meet owner, Luke Foster! which wasn’t what we had previously.” Luke spent time looking for alternative premises which suited the businesses needs better, focusing on industrial units in Plymouth. Having looked around at various places, Luke came across Reynolds Park in August 2019 where Unit 7 was available. Committing to a complete change in premises is a huge move for a business, there are so many factors to consider, but ultimately it comes down to cost and practicality. Luke took the plunge and moved Man for all Seasons across to their brand new unit at Reynolds Park in December and hasn’t looked back since.
“It’s been a huge change for us, we have much more space to work from. It’s definitely been worth it” Moving the business to Plympton has certainly been an asset to the company, it’s now easier to access the A38 being only a short drive from the unit, as well as being closer to their targeted areas of Plympton, Plymstock and Ivybridge. Although the move to Reynolds Park has been beneficial for the business, it was a huge change and massive challenge for the team, as they now have to bring in more work to cover their costs. Expansion is certainly on the cards for Luke and his team with the move in premises planting the seed. Luke is now focusing his time and energy into pushing for more work across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall as well as looking to expand his team. Currently, the Man for all Seasons team consists of Managing Director Luke, Office Manager Amy and then two gardeners Mark and Jamie, who also acts as Assistant Manager.
www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk
The small team are currently stretched with manpower and are looking to add two passionate and experienced gardeners to their team, as well as a labourer to help on landscaping jobs. Luke is searching for individuals who have basic knowledge of gardening and plants as well as excellent customer service skills.
“We are all set up to get bigger, but we need more staff” Along with expanding his team, Luke is actively pressing for more gardening and landscaping work, with maintenance jobs being his main focus. Whilst pushing for more work, Luke is also hoping to expand the area Man for all Seasons cover. They mostly operate in and around Plymouth, but the team can travel west into Cornwall covering Saltash, Liskeard, Landrake and beyond, as well as travelling east towards Exeter, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge.
“Being so close to the A38, we are in a prime location to cover a wider area. We are looking to expand on our work in Exeter, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge as well as anywhere in between.” Whether you’re after a complete garden redesign or general maintenance throughout the year, Luke and his team have got you covered. The team are no stranger to a challenging job, but no job is ever too much for the team to handle. Their new premises allow Man for all Seasons to be fully equipped with all the tools required to cut back your hedges, mow your lawn, prune and plant your garden or even design you a brand new garden using their high-end, professional software. Man for all Seasons provides the complete service with the highest level of customer service being their priority every step of the way, from the initial enquiry to the completion of the job and beyond. Attention to detail is one of the most important qualities every business should stand by, this is certainly the case for Luke and his team. Providing a service that’s reliable and tailoring to each individual’s needs is something Man for all Seasons provide themselves on.
The team - Luke, Jamie & Mark! “We uphold ourselves on the service we deliver. Always ensuring we are reliable and regular, making sure we don’t cut corners is also extremely important.” Having a passion for what you do is an attribute that many business owners lack, but not Luke. His passion for gardening remains as strong as ever, even after 12 years in business. Luke is actively involved with all aspects of the business, from mowing lawns to designing bespoke gardens for clients, as well as carrying out the back-office administration and marketing. The team are committed to the service they provide and now they have settled into their new unit in Reynolds Park they are more raring than ever to spring into action and get your garden looking like the perfect sanctuary for you to relax in during the spring and summer months.
Man for all Seasons really can do it all with years of experience and extensive knowledge, you can be fully assured that Luke and the team will go the extra mile with every job for every client. If you’re looking for a grounds, gardens and landscaping service with a difference then look no further than Man for all Seasons. Luke’s knowledge and his team’s expertise and attention to detail will ensure your garden is well looked after even during the winter months. Developing and expanding isn’t an easy task for any business, but it is clear to see that Luke’s determination and commitment
to providing the best service in Plymouth has pushed Man for all Seasons forward. With their brand-new premises fully kitted out, a few extra members of the team will allow the business to reach its full potential, providing customers throughout Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall with topquality, reliable and good value gardening services. It’s been a busy and exciting two years for Luke and the team at Man for all Seasons and we’re looking forward to seeing what the future brings to them. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS The importance of forests cannot be underestimated, and they are a part of our lives more than we realise. The 21st March brings us International Day of Forests and by understanding their importance to life and learning how we can protect them is the first step to forest sustainability!
I
n the South West, we are blessed to be surrounded by beautiful coastlines and greenspace but unfortuantely we are all guilty of taking it for granted and causing environmental damage by not understanding how the way we live impacts this system that provides us with life. With the evergrowing pressure to help preserve and protect the environment, understanding the importance of forests to us is a crucial step to making a difference. We depend on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Besides providing habitats for animals and livelihoods for humans, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change. Yet, despite our dependence on forests, we are still allowing them to disappear.
International Day of Forests aims to help raise awareness of how much forests mean to us and educate us on how we can help preserve the beauty that mother nature gifted us with. Global warming is no myth and it’s certainly not slowing down, meaning we’ve got to be proactive and do our bit even if it’s a small change to our habits. Forests cover nearly a third of all land on Earth, providing the vital organic infrastructure
for life to thrive on our planet, supporting countless species - including our own. But we are all guilty of taking our green spaces and forests for granted by not considering how we live affects them negatively. Every year millions of acres of forest are cleared by humans for housing, farming and industrial purposes so we can create ‘vital’ products such as paper, medicine and timber. We are quick to destroy forest areas such as tropical regions like the Amazon rainforest where deforestation threatens some of the most valuable ecosystems on earth. Unfortunately, the rate at which forests are replaced is too slow, having a detrimental effect on humans as well as the ecosystems that once existed in the forests. Human impacts have already led to the loss of around 40% of the world’s forests. And today, an area the size of a football pitch is still being destroyed every second. Protecting and restoring forests has never been more urgent.
It’s time to stop and think about what forests mean to us and how we can help preserve them. Forests pump out the oxygen we need to live and absorb the carbon dioxide we exhale. A single mature, leafy tree is estimated to produce a day’s supply of oxygen for anywhere from two to 10 people. We underestimate how indispensable forests are to everyone on the planet and as humans we rely on forests to help us survive, without these vital spaces our existence may cease.
Forests are more than just a bunch of trees. When we take away the forest, it is not just the trees that go. The entire ecosystem begins to fall apart, with dire consequences for all of us. Nearly half of Earth’s known species live in forests, including 80% of biodiversity
on land. That variety is especially rich in tropical rainforests, but forests teem with life around the planet: Insects and worms work nutrients into the soil, bees and birds spread pollen and seeds, and keystone species like wolves and big cats keep hungry herbivores in check. Biodiversity is a big deal, both for ecosystems and human economies, yet it’s increasingly threatened around the world by deforestation. It’s not just other living creatures that use forests as their natural habit. It’s estimated that nearly 300 million people across the globe live in forests, including an estimated 60 million indigenous people whose survival depends almost entirely on native woodlands.
If we continue to destroy forests at a rapid rate, we will face horrible consequences. Forests affect our lives every day, if you’ve had your breakfast, sat on a chair, made a shopping list, read a book, used a tissue to catch a sneeze or travelled by bus or car - forests had a vital part to play in each of those things whether directly or indirectly. With better protection, forests can continue to provide a welcome home for wildlife and resources for indigenous people and local communities. And, globally, they can keep providing us all with essentials such as fresh air and
clean water. With better management, we can boost timber production without damaging the local environment. And with better planning, we can produce enough food for growing populations without having to convert forests to farmland. We can even go further, by replanting and restoring forests that have been destroyed or degraded. This can help combat the climate, extend and reconnect wildlife habitats, and reduce problems like flooding and erosion. The preservation of forests isn’t only important for places such as South America, Africa or Asia where forests take up a large proportion of the land right, forestry conservation in the UK is just as important.
The UK is estimated to have 3.19 million hectares of woodland, equating to 13% of the total land area in the UK. (Forest Research 13th June 2019). Conservation of wildlife in the UK is often overlooked due to the media focusing on larger and more pressing global issues than what’s happening here in the UK. Protecting our forests in the UK has never been as important as it is now with climate change having a huge impact on our own forests and wildlife. It’s only right that we try to protect as many plants and animals as possible. British staples like badgers, goldfinches, otters and weasels don’t have many places left for suitable habitation. Every living creature is important, and well-maintained woodland is key to fostering the survival of wildlife for years to come. Education sits at the forefront of international forest day, if we become educated we can be more proactive in helping preserve the natural habit surrounding us.
On average, a UK citizen is responsible for three tonnes of carbon emissions a year. The Forestry Commission estimates that a hectare of woodland can void the effects of two cars’ worth of fuel output over four to six decades. Since there are over two million hectares in this country, that’s a significant, pro-green difference. So, aside from renewing us with their visual beauty, trees and plants also help to balance the atmosphere and reduce CO2.
Not only do forests provide us with the means to survive, but the beautiful scenery and green space also allow us the opportunity to get out and about to enjoy nature at its finest. In Plymouth, we are situated on the doorstep of Dartmoor National Park where 368 miles of land sits. On the east side of Plymouth lies Cann Woods, also known locally as Plym Forest, in the valley of the stunning River Plym. Covering an area of some 230 hectares, Cann Wood is an excellent example of mixed forest with areas of newly planted coniferous and broad-leaved woodland. Walk, cycle or picnic whilst taking in the beautiful views and wildlife captured in the valley. Cann Woods is host to two walking trails, various mountain biking tracks, segway, horse riding and a large picnic area to enjoy a delightful afternoon out with your family. Get in touch with mother nature as you explore Cann Woods for a dog walk or maybe even a morning run. The UK is host to a huge range of Go Ape adventures, designed to inspire you to get out and enjoy the beauty of our forests from the treetops. Nestled in 3500 acres of woodland with the stunning backdrop of the Dartmoor, lies Go Ape Haldon where you can appreciate our forests and all their beauty whilst you climb through the trees. Or you could enjoy a leisurely walk or bike ride, taking your pick from four walking trails and five high-adrenaline cycling trails.
Along with sensory activities, forests also provide us with a sense of community. New home developments that are building over green spaces are

pledging to put the sustainability of our forests and land as one of their top priorities. Sherford is the most notable development focusing on sustainability. Having spent over two decades in the planning and located in one of Devon’s most picturesque areas, Sherford is set to support a community of over 12000 people in 5500 homes. Creating a sustainable, high-quality, inclusive and diverse community has been a key driver of the entire Sherford project, not only to support the economic growth of the local area but also to ensure that it will be one of the most environmentally friendly areas in the South West. The objective has been to create a community which not only respects and enhances the surrounding environment and its diverse wildlife but also enables and supports sustainable methods of construction. The first residents are already benefiting from sustainable ways of living, including significantly reduced energy supply requirements and energy-efficient homes. During the construction of Sherford, materials such as rocks, timber, metal and plasterboard are being recycled. 85% of waste materials are being recycled, while others are being reused to construct the town’s roads and home foundations. And a massive 255,000 plants, trees and shrubs have been planted, along with more than 3000m2 of wildflower seeds sown.
The Sherford Consortium is making a difference to the local area and community by ensuring sustainability is at the top of its priorities. We can all do our bit to help combat climate change to protect our forests, there are endless ways to make a difference from changing your diet by cutting down on meat and dairy, choosing more sustainable options when it comes to materials by opting for bamboo or recycled paper or by using alternative methods of transport by taking the bus, walking or lift sharing to work, all will help reduce your impact on the environment. To educate yourself about the importance of forests, climate change and what you can do to help, head to www. forestryengland.uk or www.wwf.org.uk.

MOTHER’S DAY Mother’s Day is on Sunday 22nd of March and it’s time to show your mum that you really do care about her. Go and pick up a fresh bunch of flowers and tell her how much you love her!
M
others and mother-figures are incomparable. They may be the first people we ever know when we enter the world, and they love and care for us as we grow up and beyond. Once a year, countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day; a day dedicated to all mothers or mother figures so that we can show our appreciation.
The fourth Sunday of Lent, otherwise known as Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday, is a time for celebrating all that our Mums have done for us over the years. Mother’s Day is a tradition that dates back centuries, the day was originally marked by the reunion of mothers with their children who would otherwise be working as apprentices or domestic servants, with this day being a special holiday for children to take time off and visit their families. With more of us living further away from home and loved ones than ever before, the time we spend with our family on Mother’s Day is all the more special, with many people spending more on Mother’s Day gifts and experiences than any other festivity besides Christmas. Today, we know Mother’s Day as a day where we acknowledge the incredible things the women in our lives do for us.
Mother’s Day isn’t always about our own mothers, it’s about all mums, step-mums, mothers-in-law, mums to be, nans, grans, sisters, aunties, carers and the list goes on!
Mother’s Day is a chance to make them all feel special for all of the great things they do for us. It’s a day to show love, gratitude and appreciation to all wonderful mums everywhere, through acts of kindness and the giving of Mothers Day gifts and flowers. Everybody celebrates Mother’s Day in their own way, most commonly it’s a day for family reunions where we wait on hand and foot for our mother’s, whatever they want, we sort it!
But are lavish gifts such as jewellery, gift vouchers or spa days really what mums want for Mother’s day? As nice as it is receiving gifts, it’s not always necessary. With Mother’s Day becoming as commercial as Valentine’s Day, it’s become less about acknowledging and giving back to your mum and more about spending your money. There are many things you can do for your mum on Mother’s Day to show her you care without splashing the cash, and she’ll probably appreciate it more anyway!
What more could you want on a day that’s all about you than a nice long, uninterrupted lie in?! With Mother’s Day occurring on a Sunday, it’s the perfect day to allow mum to enjoy a few more hours in bed than normal without being interrupted by screaming, questions and nagging! You could even treat her to a delicious breakfast in bed after her well earned 12 hours of sleep.
Wouldn’t a nice, hot bubble bath be the perfect mother’s day treat? Stock up on salts and lotions this Mother’s Day to allow your mum to sit back, relax and unwind for a long soak with a glass of her favourite wine, a new book or a soothing playlist of her best-loved songs blissfully playing in the background.
Let’s face it, most mums despise having a messy home with toys 18 March 2020

flung across the living room and mountains of washing piles scattered around the house. So team up, grab some rubber gloves, sponges and the feather duster for a day of scrubbing and polishing. Mum can put her feet up with a cup of tea whilst you do the hard work hoovering and cleaning - don’t forget the washing, ironing and dishes too!
A day of relaxation and peace doesn’t have to be expensive and involve a fancy spa. Why not take the kids out for the day to give mum a day of rest and pampering. And if you’ve got toddlers then she may even be able to go to the toilet without a 3-year-old hanging from her leg begging for food for the 10th time of the day...the littlest things really do make a difference! To finish off the day with family time, cook up a feast of mums favourite meal for all to enjoy.
Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be all about spending money, it’s about spending time together and showing mum that you really do care and you’re grateful for all of the wonderful things she has done for you. www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

Finding a good, attractive venue in Plymouth to host your event or function can be a challenge especially if you are looking for tranquil surroundings while working on a tight budget. We all immediately have our ideas, but what if the perfect all-rounder venue was not what you would usually consider. What if it were right on your doorstep and could fit nicely into your keen budget? Well you’re in luck, as Plymouth Cricket Club with its stunning location, set in the heart of Mount Wise and only a short five-minute journey from the city centre by car or bus, there really is nothing more unique to host your party or event with incredible facilities on-site to cater for all of your needs from wedding receptions to business conferences.
H
aving been around since the 1830s, Plymouth Cricket Club is as much a thriving community cricket hub now as it was then and they are continually growing with top-notch facilities to host cricket matches as well as functions. We caught up with Andy Sewell, Facilities Manager at Plymouth Cricket Club to find out about the club’s history, what facilities they have on offer and why their bright and versatile pavilion is the best choice for venue hire in Plymouth. Plymouth Cricket Club lies in the heart of the stunning Mount Wise property development, providing a place for the people of Plymouth to unwind and get involved with one of the nation’s best-loved sports as well as having the capability to host functions. Andy Sewell is the Facilities Manager and license holder at the club and has had a strong association to Plymouth Cricket Club since he was a young boy having grown up playing cricket. With his knowledgeable background in marketing, managing his own company AS Events & Consultancy, and his strong connection with the club, Image Courtesy of Shield Media Services
Andy decided to start working with the club in June 2019 and has been pushing them forward with everything from cricket to hospitality ever since. Originally the club was based in both Devonport and then Mutley before moving to Outland Road where they then played until 2009. The club then found themselves in a perilous situation having both lost their lease to their ground as well as having no money. Fortunately property developers at Mount Wise in Devonport were looking for a cricket club to take over the old United Services pavilion & cricket ground.
“They needed a cricket club and we needed a cricket ground.” A new pavilion was built with money raised from donations from many local businesses, local people as well as finance from both Sport England & the ECB. The club raised around £370,000 to rebuild the old and broken pavilion to create the beautifully modern and versatile clubhouse it is today. Plymouth Cricket Club’s new Pavilion was officially opened at Mount Wise on the 30th June 2012 by Andrew Robathan, the Minister for Defence Personnel, Welfare and Veterans. Since the reopening of the club in 2012, the committee has been focusing on growth as a whole with both cricket and the facilities available to hire. The First XI team for the club currently plays in the highest division in the county -
Meet Andy Sewell! the premier division of The Devon Cricket League, playing in fixtures around the county in Exeter, Bovey Tracey, Exmouth & Sidmouth plus many more.
“We play decent cricket at a good level” Anyone is welcome to join Plymouth Cricket Club and their teams currently consist of three senior male teams, a ladies team, a midweek team and various junior teams ranging from under 8’s to under 19’s. The First XI team at Plymouth Cricket Club are highly successful in the Devon Cricket League and the team is thriving even further with the help of professional Pakistani player Faizan Riaz, the leagues run-scoring record holder. Faizan will join the club once again in April for his fourth season, with the team hoping for a season of success in league cricket. After much consideration and deliberating, the committee decided it was time to get rid of membership fees and run the club on a ‘pay to play’ basis where players can pay a fee each time they play.
“We turned the membership on its head and it’s worked well. People don’t have the time to commit to playing every week, this has worked much better for them and us.” The club regularly gets between 200 and 300 spectators watching a 1st team home match on a Saturday, with the facilities in the Pavilion open for all to make use of including a fully stocked bar. Although cricket remains the core of the club, Andy is looking to boost the use and hire of their top quality and beautifully decorated facilities to the public. And with a fully licensed and fully stocked bar with a wide range of options from hot, cold, soft and alcoholic drinks available it’s a no brainer for the club. With the cricket season running from April until the end of August, Andy is looking to fill the gaps with a whole host of events. The club remains available to hire in or out of season with availability limited during the peak cricket season.
“Plymouth Cricket Club is the perfect ‘all-rounder’ venue for your function, meeting or event” The friendly and relaxed atmosphere of the venue means you’ll be welcomed with open arms by the team from Andy who manages the bar and the main running of the club to Chef Barbara from Devon Chef who cooks their home-made dishes in the on-site kitchen, putting a unique spin on catering for every event they host. Only five minutes from the city centre and with accessible free parking, a fully stocked bar, BBQ facilities and a large decorated space, the club has everything you would look for in a unique venue, with fully exclusive hire at your fingertips.
“We are a hidden gem in the city, lots of people still don’t know we exist and we want to change that.” The possibilities at Plymouth Cricket Club are endless, being a hub for the local community to hosting functions from birthdays to wedding receptions, wakes, christenings and anniversaries as well as being available to hire for business meetings, conferences, workshops and training events. It really is an ‘all-rounder’ venue catering to a variety of needs.
The highly adaptable space with a flexible layout for each event caters for up to 60 people. If catering is a requirement for your event, the club offers a delicious range of catering options available to suit individual requirements, all cooked and served from the fully equipped on-site kitchen by chef, Barbara. Barbara works tirelessly for each event, whipping up scrumptious dishes for all to indulge in. Her skills are put to the test at each event hosted at the club, but she always ensures her dishes are flexible and cater to everyone’s needs, from vegetarians to vegans.
“The beauty of Plymouth Cricket Club is that it’s very adaptable” Andy and the small team at Plymouth Cricket Club are on hand to help every step of the way from the initial enquiry until the event itself, always ensuring everyone is happy and having a great time. The club is available to book 7 days a week from 8 am until midnight and offers competitive hourly, half-day and full-day rates for both functions and business hire. Low-cost hire rates mean this venue is affordable for all, and the committee ensure that value for money is at the utmost of priorities with their quality facilities on offer for exclusive use in or out of season.
Despite focusing on pushing venue hire, Andy insists it will always be a cricket club first, being completely focused on cricket, especially in the spring and summer months. “Like any sports club, we are looking for Additional revenue streams and with the excellent facilities we have here, venue hire is at the forefront of that” Through hard work and determination, Andy has pushed the club forward since taking on his new role in 2019. It is clear to see that he is concentrating on growth for Plymouth Cricket Club and with his deep, sentimental connection to the club, and his passion for cricket and marketing we are excited to see the club’s success shine through. For more information on Plymouth Cricket Club, the facilities they have on offer, how to get involved in cricket and venue hire, contact Andy using the details below.

Recipe ideas
There’s nothing worse than getting in from a long day at work and having to spend your evening preparing dinner for the the whole family. Take the stress out of dinner time this March with our easy to make meals for all to enjoy!
Spicy black bean tacos 1 tbsp vegetable oil, 3 garlic cloves (chopped) 3 x 400g cans black beans (drained and rinsed) 3 tbsp cider vinegar, 1 ½ tbsp honey, 1 ½ tbsp smoked paprika, 1 ½ tbsp ground cumin For the guacamole: 1 small garlic clove, 2 tbsp roughly chopped coriander, 1 green chilli (sliced), 2 avocados (halved and stoned), juice 1 lime For the salsa: 110g pack pomegranate seeds, 1 green chilli (finely diced), 1 small white onion (finely diced), small handful fresh coriander (chopped) To serve: 8-12 corn or flour tortillas, chipotle or other hot sauce, soured cream or coconut yogurt One In a large frying pan, heat the oil and add the garlic. Fry until golden, then add the beans. Pour in the cider vinegar, honey and spices along with 1 tsp or more of salt, to taste. Cook until warmed through, crushing gently with the back of your wooden spoon, then set aside. Two The best way to make the guacamole is with a large stone pestle and mortar, but you can use a medium bowl and a flatended rolling pin instead. Crush the garlic, coriander and chilli into a rough paste. Scoop in the avocado with a little salt and crush roughly – you want it chunky, not smooth. Squeeze in the lime juice and set aside. Three Mix the salsa ingredients in a small bowl. Heat a griddle pan or steamer and quickly griddle the tortillas or steam a stack of them to warm up. Reheat the bean mixture. To serve, put 1-2 heaped tbsp of beans on a tortilla. Top with a big spoonful of guacamole and some salsa, hot sauce and a dollop of soured cream or yogurt.
Sausage Ragu 3 tbsp olive oil, 1 onion (finely chopped), 2 large garlic cloves (crushed), ¼ tsp chilli flakes, 2 rosemary sprigs (leaves finely chopped), 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 6 pork sausages, 150ml whole milk, 1 lemon (zested), 350g rigatoni pasta (or any other pasta), grated parmesan and ½ small bunch parsley (leaves roughly chopped) to serve One Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a saucepan over a medium heat. Fry the onion with a pinch of salt for 7 mins. Add the garlic, chilli and rosemary, and cook for 1 min more. Tip in the tomatoes and sugar, and simmer for 20 mins. Two Heat the remaining oil in a medium frying pan over a medium heat. Squeeze the sausagemeat from the skins and fry, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, for 5-7 mins until golden. Add to the sauce with the milk and lemon zest, then simmer for a further 5 mins. To freeze, leave to cool completely and transfer to large freezerproof bags. THREE Cook the pasta following pack instructions. Drain and toss with the sauce. Scatter over the parmesan and parsley leaves to serve.
Vegan lemon cheesecake For the base: 30g coconut oil, plus extra for greasing, 100g blanched almonds, 100g soft pitted date For the topping: 300g cashew nuts, 2 ½ tbsp agave syrup, 50g coconut oil, 150ml almond milk, 2 lemons (zested and juiced) One Put the cashews in a large bowl, pour over boiling water and leave to soak for 1 hr. Meanwhile, blitz the ingredients for the base with a pinch of salt in a food processor. Grease a 23cm tart tin with coconut oil, then press the mix into the base and pop in the fridge to set (about 30 mins). Two Drain the cashews and tip into the cleaned out food processor. Add all the remaining topping ingredients, reserving a quarter of the lemon zest in damp kitchen paper to serve, then blitz until smooth. Spoon onto the base and put in the fridge to set completely (about 2 hrs). Just before serving, scatter over the reserved lemon zest.
Stuffed red peppers
100g wholewheat couscous (rinsed and drained), 3 tbsp raisins, bunch parsley (roughly chopped), 25g pine nuts, 100g feta (crumbled), pinch of cinnamon, 3 tbsp olive oil, 290g jar grilled whole peppers (drained and rinsed) ONE Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Put the couscous and raisins in a bowl with a pinch of seasoning and just cover with boiling water. Leave to stand for 5 mins. Two Fluff the couscous with a fork and stir through the parsley, pine nuts, half the feta, the cinnamon and 2 tbsp of the oil. Mix and season to taste.
Thai green pork lettuce cups
THREE Generously stuff the peppers with the couscous mix (any leftover stuffing can be served next to the peppers), then lay them in a small roasting tin and scatter over the remaining feta. Drizzle with the remaining oil and bake in the oven for 15 mins until hot and the feta has turned golden.
1 tbsp sesame oil, 500g pork mince, 1 tbsp green curry paste, 1 red onion (finely chopped), juice 1 lime, 1 tbsp fish sauce, ½ small pack mint (leaves only, roughly chopped), ½ small pack coriander (leaves only, roughly chopped), 4 Little Gem lettuces (leaves separated), rice to serve (optional)
Real tomato soup
ONE Heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the pork for 8-10 mins or until cooked through. Stir in the green curry paste and 2 tbsp water, then cook for 1-2 mins.
2 tbsp olive oil, 1 onion (chopped), 1 garlic clove, finely chopped, 1 tbsp tomato purée, 400g can chopped tomato handful basil leaf, pinch bicarbonate of soda, 600ml milk ONE Heat the olive oil in a large pan, then tip in the onion and garlic. Cook over a moderate heat until the onion has softened, about 5 mins. Stir in the tomato purée, then pour in the chopped tomatoes and basil leaves, and bring up to the boil. Turn the heat down and leave to simmer for about 15 mins until thick and full of flavour. If you like a smooth soup, whizz the mixture at this point to form a smooth sauce. Can now be cooled and frozen for up to 1 month. Two To finish the soup, tip the tomato mixture into a pan. Spoon the baking soda into a small bowl and pour over 1 tbsp or so of the milk. Mix together until there are no lumps, then tip into the tomato mix and pour over the milk. Bring up to a boil (the mixture will froth, but don’t worry – it will go away). Gently simmer for about 5 mins until ready to serve.
two Remove from the heat and stir in the red onion, lime juice, fish sauce and herbs. Spoon the pork into the lettuce leaves and serve with rice, if you like.
Vegan cookies and cream brownies 265g self-raising flour, 245g soft brown sugar, 50g cocoa powder, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 110ml vegetable oil, 1 ½ tbsp white wine vinegar, 85g dairy-free coconut yogurt, 150g vegan cookies of your choice (we used Oreos), broken into chunks ONE Heat oven to 170C/150C fan/gas 3 and line a 18 x 30cm brownie tin with baking parchment. In a bowl mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa and ½ tsp salt. In a jug mix together 125ml water with the vanilla, oil, vinegar and yogurt. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix until smooth and combined. two Pour the mix into the tin and smooth the top. Push the chunks of vegan biscuits into the batter, leaving some poking out of the top. (We used Oreos, which are made with dairy-free ingredients, although be aware that allergy information indicates that these may contain traces of milk.) Bake for 30-35 mins, until set but still squidgy in the middle. Leave to cool in the tin, then cut into squares.
Creamy broccoli gnocchi 3 tbsp crème fraîche, ½ tbsp Dijon mustard, ½ lemon (zested and juiced), 200g long-stem broccoli (each cut into 3 pieces), 350g fresh gnocchi, 2 tbsp olive oil, 100g frozen peas, 1 tbsp toasted pine nuts ONE Mix together the crème fraîche, mustard and lemon juice. Set aside. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Once boiling, add the broccoli and cook for 3 mins, then tip in the gnocchi. Cook until the gnocchi begins to float to the surface, this will only take 1 min so keep an eye on them, then drain. two Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and, once hot, tip in the gnocchi, broccoli and frozen peas. Toss around in the hot oil for 1 min, then stir through the crème fraîche mixture. Season to taste. Once hot, spoon into bowls and top with the lemon zest and pine nuts.

Donna Baker, Harry Austin, Katherine Millman & Stephen Smith After much hard work and a smooth Most of us will require legal services at some point during transition into their new, open-plan our lifetime, and when the time comes, you want to be sure offices in December 2017 based at Plym House, Plympton and Glanvilles Mill, that the services you’re paying for are first-class, efficient, Ivybridge; the team has been focusing reliable and being carried out by a fully qualified team of on providing the best possible service lawyers. Look no further than Howard & Over solicitors, who they can for each client.
provide all of the above and so much more, ensuring each client’s needs are their top priority every step of the way. We met up with Donna, Katherine, Stephen and Harry to discuss their development as a law firm internally and externally and why they are your top choice when it comes to legal services.
C
hoosing a solicitors firm to take care of your legal requirements can be difficult, especially when the process is sensitive and complicated. You want to ensure they are the right fit for you, with the approachability and experience to take on your issues and deal with them professionally, efficiently all whilst providing a brilliant service. OM caught up with the team at Howard & Over to find out why they are your number one choice in Plymouth for your legal needs.
been an upgrade in premises, website and branding with modernisation at the forefront of the move.
Starting out as a small firm in Plymouth over 100 years ago in 1914, Howard & Over is now an established and respected law firm serving the people of Plymouth and South Hams with first-class service and expert legal advice.
“We needed to bite the bullet and move forward”
Since the firm was established in 1914, it has gone from strength to strength with many changes taking place across the business. The most recent changes have
With their offices in Ivybridge, Devonport and Plymstock becoming increasingly dated, the new management team: Donna Baker, Katherine Millman, Jan Millar and Tim Quinn decided to push the firm forward, moving away from old-fashioned, unsuitable premises to new modern and more importantly accessible offices.
When considering new premises for the Plymouth office, the partners decided that Plym House in Plympton was the perfect location, easily accessible from the A38 and all main routes in and out of the city via car or public transport and with free parking available for their clients who drive. “Plymstock isn’t too far away from here, Ivybridge is a 10-minute car journey away and Plympton is right on our doorstep. We aren’t on the outskirts; we are still in Plymouth”

As you would expect from a firm the size of Howard & Over, they are able to offer their services to both personal and business clients with a wide range of services available including Residential and Commercial Property, Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Probate, Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Family, Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence, Business and Agriculture, and Debt Collection. Although the services offered at each office differ, any member of staff is willing to travel between the two at the convenience of the client, always putting the client’s needs ahead of their own. Getting to know each client and understanding their needs every step of the process with any legal requirement is something the team at Howard & Over pride themselves on, going out of their way to ensure each client is looked after and understands the process fully.
When consulting with a solicitors’ firm, most of the time the matter is urgent, sensitive and occasionally distressing for the client; this is something Howard & Over understand as a law firm and allow each case to be handled with care, diligence and empathy.
The Ivybridge office was originally based on Fore Street and has now moved to an openplan and refurbished office in Glanvilles Mill at the centre of Ivybridge with the team opting to keep their location close to the high street.
“The client is relying on you entirely to get it right for them, and documents tend to look like a foreign language to them. When we advise our clients, we make certain it is explained to them and that they understand it fully.”
Civil Litigation Solicitor, Stephen Smith tells us - “We now have a nice, professional environment where we can welcome clients.”

to help, advise and make things easy, no matter how small or complicated the case.
The firm value themselves on building a trusting relationship with their clients. Face to face contact is an important quality most people look for in a solicitor. Meeting the person or team dealing with your legal needs builds trust and understanding between the client and the firm. Every member of staff at Howard & Over are happy to meet with their clients and put them at ease throughout the legal process, always on hand to answer questions and keeping them up to date every step of the way. The team at Howard & Over not only provide top quality service but supporting one another with training and development is also a priority. Recently qualified solicitor, Harry Austin, started training with Howard & Over in 2014 after completing his Law degree, working his way up from a paralegal to now a fully qualified solicitor dealing with commercial and residential property matters. Partner and head of the property department, Donna Baker explains - “After some time of Harry working at the firm, we were really pleased with what he was doing so we offered him the opportunity to complete his training contract with us. Whilst working he undertook the Legal Practice course which he got a distinction in.” Different to most other firms, Howard & Over want qualified staff dealing with their clients and carrying out the work. The partners encourage progression within the firm, supporting every individual with their development and investing in training where required. When investing in legal advice for personal matters or your business needs, you want to be confident the firm you’ve chosen is fully accredited and qualified to carry out the services being offered. This is why Howard & Over chose to become accredited with Lexcel, the Law Society’s quality mark for excellence in legal practice management and client care, giving you peace of mind and reassurance that they have your best interests at heart during the legal process.
Finding access to legal advice is something Howard & Over
Meet the Howard & Over team!
understand can be difficult for many people with cost playing a huge part in how legal issues are dealt with. Their newly updated website focuses on being accessible and easy for all to use via desktop and mobiles with the function to contact the firm directly from the website. They have also ensured their pricing for each service is laid out clearly; something you don’t see often with law firms. “You’ve got to be transparent with your clients; they want to know what they’re paying for and how much it’s going to cost them”
are often going out of their way for clients in the form of home visits. “We offer home visits at no extra cost to the client and particularly with my line of work, a lot more of my clients require home visits as they are elderly or can’t leave their home. You’ve got to put the client first especially when they don’t have anyone else to help them.” Growth and development both internally and externally has been at the forefront for the firm. A change of appearance has seen Howard & Over modernise whilst maintaining the same level of professional, high-quality service and ethics that has kept them strong since 1914.
With many transactions taking a long time from buying a home to contested probate or property disputes, clients can often put their emotions first, rather than considering their finances. The team understand the legal process is costly and stressful, and therefore take their time to understand each case and are realistic when advising the client on whether the investment is financially viable compared to the likely outcome.
The updated offices have been integral to the development of Howard & Over and have allowed them to expand at a manageable rate all whilst staying core to the services they provide.
“Hourly rates can get out of control with added fees on top, so it’s about being realistic with clients and working out what is best for them emotionally and financially. With litigation especially we discourage clients from entering into something if it’s not going to be worth their while.”
Having been shortlisted for the Devon and Somerset Legal Awards ‘Law Firm of the Year’ for the second time running, which takes place in April we are excited to see what the future brings for this forward-thinking, approachable and modern firm. It is clear to see the firm are looking ahead and further growth is on their minds with the partners pushing for Howard & Over to be the best solicitors’ firm in Plymouth delivering excellent service across their two offices.
No person is ever turned away by the team at Howard & Over with people often dropping in and calling for legal advice. Whether you call or drop in, a member of the team will speak with you and they are always happy to help in any situation. Katherine Millman, partner and head of the private client department tells us the team
“We want to continue to grow but at a pace that doesn’t affect our quality service and high street approach”

When making any kind of legal claim, choosing your legal representatives is a very important decision, and can make a huge difference; it could mean the difference between a wellhandled case and a shambolic ordeal, success and failure – the right compensation and a missed opportunity for justice. What we all look for is trusted and honest legal advice along with extensive knowledge and reputation but without the huge price tag, a firm that puts your needs first with both, personal and business legal issues. Stephen Hall, Director and Solicitor at Evans Harvey Solicitors, spoke with OM Magazine about their recent renovations, the services they provide and future plans for the company.
E
vans Harvey has served the Crownhill community for over 30 years. We last visited them in August 2017 when they had recently purchased their current premises ready for a huge renovation. Two years on and they have finally moved back into their brand new state of the art offices based in the heart of Crownhill Village. Since their renovation completed in September, Stephen has focused on expanding with a new office opening on Mutley Plain on the 2nd of March.
the legal market. The Evans Harvey team is currently 18 strong with plans to continue to recruit for upcoming positions in their new offices. As you would expect from a Solicitors firm, Evans Harvey offer a wide range of services to their clients, including property, conveyancing, wills, tax and probate, family and matrimonial law, personal injury, company and commercial, employment, litigation and chancery work.
Stephen joined the company in December 2008 after a career working as a Solicitor in personal injury around the UK. Since joining, Stephen has worked his way up from partner to Director, taking on the practice as owner in 2010.
Evans Harvey listen and understand every client’s needs to ensure they are providing the best level of service. Also all clients are given the opportunity to complete a customer satisfaction form after each case has been closed.
Since taking over, Stephen has focused on growing the team to become a stronger foundation for their clients with

Meet Stephen Hall! their services. Additionally for every form returned Evans Harvey donate money to St Luke’s Hospice. Giving back to the community is one of the top traits of the firm. To this end Stephen is also Chairman of The Crownhill Community Group which was initially set up with charitable intentions at its heart with the assistance of the local business communities, the Church and local Plymouth Councillors. One of the highlights of the work of the group is the Christmas festivities each year and of course the Christmas light up with Santa for the children. Stephen says that prior to the community association being set up there were no Christmas festivities and the event gets bigger every year and is well attended. Working in a busy Solicitors firm sees the team flying by the seat of their pants, ready for every situation that may arise, often being called to emergency Court proceedings at the drop of a hat. However despite how busy Evans Harvey are they still make time for the local community, visiting local care and nursing homes on a weekly basis. One thing that sets Evans Harvey above other Solicitor firms in Plymouth is that they offer home visits to clients and members of staff are often heading out of the office to visit elderly clients who cannot attend their offices occasionally taking a box of chocolates and flowers to cheer them up. Stephen says that often once the legal process is sorted

our clients will often engage in conversation and have fascinating life stories to tell and makes it much more than simply a job.
Stephen says “we do nursing home visits two or three times a week and we do not charge travel costs or hourly fees for travel. We simply do it. If it is an hour of your time and if you cannot do that then quite frankly you should not be doing it at all.” Evans Harvey value themselves on the ethos that building a trusting relationship with clients is very important and as such have developed relationships with clients spanning many decades and effectively have become the family Solicitor not just for them but their children and grandchildren etc.
“It sounds pompous, but it really is genuine and we always go the extra mile for people and do everything we can to help” Catering to every client is extremely important to the team, they hold free dropin clinics on Tuesday mornings 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. with advice on wills, probate and inheritance claims and on Wednesday mornings 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. for family matters. The firm will also be re-instating their Tuesday evening clinic once things have settled down from the move. The office is also open on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is good for people that cannot get in during the week.
The expansion to their office has seen some huge improvements. Stephen and the team could not be more pleased to be back in their permanent premises. Evans Harvey have been situated in their current building for over 35 years but only fully purchased the premises in 2017 with the view to renovate the two houses into one combined set of offices – and they have done exactly that. Having moved out of their Crownhill Village and into a temporary office on Budshead Road in December 2018, the Evans Harvey team finally moved back into their brand new, refurbished premises on 27th August 2019, after a long 8 months of renovations.
The renovation has transformed the premises into a bright-white, professional office where clients are welcomed to a brand new, beaming reception area providing a calming, quiet space for them to wait. “Everything’s been upgraded, the computers, telephones, servers, technology, and furniture – we’ve brought everything up to the 21st century”.
After spending 8 months sharing an open plan office, the Evans Harvey team are thrilled to be back in their own space with all legal executives and Solicitors having their own separate office, large enough to accommodate clients; meaning no more sharing. The refurbishment has allowed for nine extra rooms to be situated within the building, as well as a large conference room seating up to 10 people comfortably, a brand new reception area with Evans Harvey branding and fully fitted disabled toilet facilities. Every detail has been carefully considered with the renovation. “The new office space is pleasant to walk into and I think it has been very sensitively done in so much that we still want to offer the service to the local community and we certainly don’t want people to think we’re putting our prices up to cover this, we are not.”
The process of expansion has not been easy or quick, with a threestage plan from buying the premises, building the extension and now the first two stages are complete they can focus on growing the team even further and expanding the firm to new locations across Plymouth. Expansion is definitely on Stephen’s mind despite having only just returned to their head office. To this end, Stephen has acquired a new practice on Mutley Plain which opens on the 2nd of March. Conveyancing solicitor, Simon Dusting, will be based at the Mutley Plain office full-time after joining the company in December last year. The new office will operate in the same way as the main Crownhill Office, offering their
wide range of services from Conveyancing to Wills & Probate as well as Family matters. Free Clinics will also be run at the clinic, commencing on Monday 16th March on Wednesdays between 10 am and 12 pm for advice on Wills, Probate and Inheritance matters, and Thursdays between 8.30 am and 11 am for Family matters. There is no doubt that Stephen thrives to push Evans Harvey to be the best Solicitors firm in Plymouth with some huge plans in store for the future. It is clear that his passion for both his work and his clients really are endless with every member of the team delivering firstclass service to each and every client. Stephen says “We are looking to expand significantly over the next 5 years”.
Evans Harvey also benefits from free 3 hour car parking in the public car park to the rear of its Crownhill premises. DEBT AWARENESS WEEK Debt Awareness Week, starting on the 23rd of March is a chance to share the message that nobody needs to deal with debt on their own and free and impartial advice is available.
W
orrying about money is something many of us face regularly and with it only taking a few clicks online to sign up for a credit card or finance agreement it’s no wonder the amount of people running themselves into money issues and debt is on the rise in the UK. First launched in 2014, Debt Awareness Week is StepChange Debt Charity’s annual campaign to open up the conversation around debt and encourage people who need help or advice to seek it out. This could mean getting advice and solutions for an existing debt problem, or it could mean getting hints and tips to deal with early warning signs that a debt problem may be developing, such as only ever making the minimum payment on a credit card, for example.
The campaign for 2020 is focusing on this key message: ‘Change your debt story.’ This year, the campaign runs from 23rd-29th of March and StepChange will be highlighting their key messages across their website and social media to help make a change to the lives of those struggling with debt.
It is estimated that we are carrying £87 billion in household debt here in the UK, this includes loans, credit cards, hire purchase agreements, overdrafts and arrears. And it’s no surprise as technology is taking over our lives and with the younger generation being heavily focused on materialistic things, it’s easier than ever to sign up to a credit agreement on a new TV or the latest iPhone.
More than 18 million UK adults worry about money on a daily basis with a third saying their concerns affect their sleep. Research from mobile bank N26, to coincide with World Mental Health Day 2019, has lifted the lid on how money worries affect people’s mental health. It found that about 9.5m UK adults have suffered from mental health issues as a result of financial anxiety. Looking after our mental health is more important than ever, as is keeping a track of our finances and ensuring we are doing our very best to stay out of money problems, but sometimes it’s unavoidable when our car breaks down and needs repairing urgently, or the boiler packs in and we need a quick fix until payday.
What support is available to us if we do land ourselves in a pool of debt?
There are many organisations on hand to help support those struggling with money, but most notably, StepChange have a vision to create a society free from problem debt; being dedicated to fighting debt problems across the UK. StepChange have a team of debt experts who help around 650,000 people every year deal with their debt problems. If you’re having debt problems you’ll find it difficult to make payments to your creditors, StepChange is on hand to help

Salon owners Sarah and Julie!
Growth is important to the survival of any business, particularly small local businesses such as Halo Hairdressing based at the heart of Crownhill Village. We last caught up with Julie Wotton and Sarah Jury, owners of Halo Hairdressing, in March 2019 and since then they have been busy developing the salon to provide the best service possible in a brand new, refurbished premises. With their 11th anniversary coming up we caught up with them to discuss their recent move as well as finding out how they are going from strength to strength.
J
ulie Wotton and Sarah Jury, owners of the much loved and well-known Crownhill based salon, Halo Hairdressing, are coming up to 11 years of being in a partnership. The salon has maintained a high level of customer service and professionalism throughout their many years with a friendly and focused team of seven stylists on hand to help every client look their very best.
After the Plymouth & South West Co-op owned salon ‘Snips’ announced their decision to close in 2009, Julie who was the manager and Sarah a recently qualified stylist decided to take matters into their own hands by teaming up to buy the business as a partnership, rebranding to ‘Halo Hairdressing’.
Julie tells us - “At the time I had just had my first child so didn’t have the time to be full-time, so Sarah said to me “You’ve got the experience and I’ve got the time”, it was a perfect match” 11 years on and with a strong team of five employed stylists, Halo is thriving with a loyal client base from across the city of Plymouth and a brand new, larger and improved premises to show off.
The decision to move premises wasn’t a move taken lightly by Julie and Sarah. With the lease on their premises up for renewal last year they were considering buying premises rather than leasing, a move which would add security to the business. “We were conscious of the rent we were paying and that the building was getting older. We realised that as a tenant you are vulnerable, at any point your landlord can ask for their property back and you’ll lose your business, we didn’t want to be in that position.” Recognising that leasing was a growing risk to the business, Julie and Sarah were on the hunt for premises close by to their base in Crownhill, hoping to stay local keeping their loyal clientele. When their new premises, previously Natwest bank, came up for sale it was a no brainer to snap it up right away with buildings in Crownhill Village rarely going up for sale.
No business move goes without hard work, determination and investment which Julie and Sarah were committed to. They brought in professionals Bryn and Andy from South West Shopfitters after completing work at their previous salon in 2016. The intense job of the refurbishment of the new salon started in September 2019. Julie and Sarah wish to give a special thanks to Dale Mullen, the Business Relationship Manager at Santander who believed in them every step of the way and made their drastic move and renovation possible.
After 4 long months of refurbishment, the Halo team have finally moved into their luxurious new premises at 38 Morshead Road in Crownhill Village and they couldn’t be happier. Feedback from clients has been extremely positive for the salon with most being shocked at the incredible transformation from a dark and dingy bank to a bright and vibrant salon where no expense has been spared. Every client can be sure to receive the best possible service each time they visit Halo; with a clean salon to relax and enjoy their treatment in. The team make sure the floors are swept after every appointment, the towels are fully laundered and only the most professional products are used to make you feel your best. Since rebranding as Halo in 2009, the team has remained the same with Jo, Liz and Cheryl following Julie and Sarah on from original salon ‘Snips’ and Emily and Kirsty joining later to complete the Halo family.
The unique bond between the stylists is undeniable, always supporting one another and creating a fun, uplifting and relaxing environment for their clients all whilst providing a quality service every step of the way. Changes to the salon have seen Halo’s client base expand with the new look, size and features of the salon bringing customers in. The most noticeable change is that the new salon offers more privacy for clients having their hair done. Julie and Sarah put their heads together to consider how they could improve the salon and add new attributes to guarantee their clients feel their very best. One change that hasn’t gone unnoticed is a new disabled toilet easily accessible for clients, as well as a baby changing facility. “We’ve also ensured there are two extra styling areas, one of which is separate from the main salon giving those clients that

We’re investing in a privacy screen specifically for those who have cancer and have come into have their heads shaved ahead of treatment, as well as for children who have learning difficulties and struggle with a busy and noisy environment.”
These unique changes will certainly put Halo ahead of other local salons to Plymouth, showing they go the extra mile with client care and satisfaction ensuring it’s at the top of their priorities. Over the years, Julie and Sarah have found ways to develop the salon to become the best it can be, always thinking about how to entice customers in and keep them loyal. They’ve noticed that one of the most important aspects of hairdressing and styling is keeping up to date and on top of current trends, from colours to cuts and new products; allowing them to offer a wide range of services throughout the salon. Ensuring each member of staff is highly
trained is something Julie and Sarah pride themselves on, this is why they often invest in training and support every member of staff with courses and new equipment where necessary. The team at Halo use the best products on offer with partnerships with global leaders in cosmetics such as L’Oreal and Goldwell who provide in-salon training for the team throughout the year using their knowledge to teach new techniques and keeping the staff up to date with the latest trends and products on offer. Communication is important to Julie and Sarah, making certain that each member of the team communicates with one another as well as with their clients. Understanding the customers’ needs during the consultation process allows the stylists to get it exactly right during the styling process.
“It’s all about communication. I bang on about this word because you’ve got to communicate to get it right.” The experienced team of seven have 140 years of hairdressing experience between them, each having their strengths ranging from long hair and perms to balayage, hair ups and intense colour elumenation. The team ensure that the right stylist is matched with a client to make every cut and style unforgettable. Every stylist is committed to keeping a strong work ethic and client focus with their passion for friendly and professional customer service shining through.
The team are excited to be celebrating 11 years of Halo on the 14th of April this year and are pleased to have their new salon to show off for the celebrations. Julie and Sarah never envisioned to be where they are now when going into partnership in 2009. “We were so happy

where we were and we gained the confidence and experience to expand and make things better for the business. This small, family-focused salon is always looking out for a way to give back to the community, raising funds for charity being a huge part of what they do. The girls often dress up and host bake sales for their clients to get involved with the raising money for diabetes charities, something that is very close to Julie’s heart. Along with running the salon and providing excellent customer service, Julie takes time out of her week as part of the PTA for Elburton Primary School where two of her children are pupils. Julie often helps organise events, from summer balls to circuses and pig racing - all in aid of raising funds for the PTA, investing money back into the school. It is clear to see that the team at Halo treat each other like family, welcoming every customer with open arms. It’s no wonder they have such a loyal client base, always focusing on the customer and how to keep them loyal throughout the entire process. We’re excited to see what the future brings for Julie, Sarah and the rest of the team.
Anyone is welcome at Halo Hairdressing, with each member of the team being an expert in treating clients of every age, the salon welcomes ladies, gents and children. NATIONAL BED MONTH Throughout March it’s National Bed Month – a whole month dedicated to learning about the importance of a good night’s sleep and how to improve your kip with a comfortable, supportive bed.
W
ho doesn’t love a full, uninterrupted night’s sleep? If you find you’re struggling to get to sleep or you’re waking up at 4 am because the springs in your bed are uncomfortable then fear not as March is National Bed Month and we’re here to tell you how important it is to get a full night’s sleep and what you should be doing to ensure you really do get your beauty sleep. Organised by The Sleep Council, the month aims to remind us all of why a sound sleep is good for our health. It’s thought that good sleep has amazing properties that make you healthier and happier, and can even add years to your life! In 1988, a groundbreaking study found that by switching an uncomfortable old bed to a lovely new one meant an extra 42 minutes of sleep! It might not seem like much, but 42 minutes could be the difference in your mood for the rest of the day.
But why do we sleep? It may at first seem glaringly obvious, but the question of sleep is actually quite mysterious. In simple terms, it is an extended bout of rest we experience on a daily basis, where we most often lay down with our eyes closed. But there’s more to sleep than meets the eye.
We tend to think of sleep as a time when the mind and body shut down. But this is not the case; sleep is an active period in which a lot of important processing, restoration, and strengthening occurs. One of the vital roles of sleep is to help us solidify and consolidate memories. As we go about our day, our brains take in an incredible amount of information. Rather than being directly logged and recorded, however, these facts and experiences first need to be processed and stored; and many of these steps happen while we sleep. Overnight, bits and pieces of information are transferred from more tentative, short-term memory to stronger, long-term memory—a process called “consolidation.”
How much sleep do we need? Sleep is a vital indicator of overall health and well-being. The average person spends around a third of their life asleep. In this time, our bodies are able to replenish energy stores and make repairs, while our minds organise and store the memories of the day before. The amount of sleep you need depends on your age, sex, health and other elements, and sleep cycles change as we grow older. Most of us know that getting a good night’s sleep is important, but too few of
us actually make those eight or so hours between the sheets a priority. For many of us with sleep debt, we’ve forgotten what “being really, truly rested” feels like. Healthy sleep is critical for everyone since we all need to retain information and learn skills to thrive in life. But this is likely part of the reason children - who acquire language, social, and motor skills at a breathtaking pace throughout their development - need more sleep than adults. While adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night, one-year-olds need roughly 11 to 14 hours, school-age children between 9 and 11, and teenagers between 8 and 10. During these critical periods of growth and learning, younger people need a heavy dose of slumber for optimal development and alertness. To determine how much sleep you need, it’s important to assess not only where you fall on the “sleep needs spectrum,” but also to examine what lifestyle factors are affecting the quality and quantity of your sleep such as work schedules and stress.
How can you improve your sleeping habits? To begin a new path towards healthier sleep and a healthier lifestyle, begin by assessing your own individual needs and habits, you need to test how you respond to different amounts of sleep. Pay careful attention to your mood, energy and health after a poor night’s sleep versus a good one. Ask yourself, “How often do I get a good night’s sleep?” Like good diet and exercise, sleep is a critical component to overall health. To pave the way for better sleep, consider these simple, yet effective healthy steps to fulfilling your sleep goals!

Your Bedroom If you’re having trouble sleeping, one of the first things to consider is your bedroom. In order to get a restful night’s sleep, you need the right setting, which means a clean, peaceful and welcoming room. Many of us are unknowingly sleeping in a bedroom that’s simply not fit for purpose, and that environment could be the key cause of a restless night. Always ensure that when it’s time for sleep you make your room completely dark, this means investing in some blackout blinds or curtains or even an eye mask. Say no to technology in the bedroom! That means avoiding televisions and computers. Having access to these will urge you to switch on when you can’t drift off, which in turn can lead to even more disturbed sleep.
Your Bed The foundation of a great night’s sleep is a comfortable bed. The right mattress can make a huge difference between a restful and restless night, saving you from fatigue and irritability for the rest of the day. An unsupportive mattress will encourage a poor sleeping posture, which prevents you from a good sleep. If you regularly wake up with aches and pains, it’s probably time to change your mattress. There’s a huge amount of choice on the bed market, which can make selecting the right one difficult. But one thing is for sure, the right support is crucial. If your bed is too hard or soft, it will be uncomfortable and unsupportive. Your mattress should be firm enough to support your spine in the correct alignment while conforming to your body’s contours. Investing in a good mattress isn’t something to take lightly, but quality should always be above price. And remember ALWAYS try before you buy!
Your Lifestyle The 21st-century lifestyle is typically fast-paced, chaotic and jam-packed with
technology. From the moment we wake up we switch on our brains with smartphones, and as our day progresses, we’re presented with even more triggers. The continuous content that’s fed from TV and radio, real-time social feeds and our constant checking of emails all make for a non-stop stimulation… It’s no wonder that many of us can’t switch off or fall asleep, then struggle to wake up in the morning and spend a lot of time complaining “I can’t sleep!” or “I had the worst night’s sleep!”. There are simple ways to adjust your lifestyle to promote a better night’s sleep. These minor changes will help you to wind down and relax, removing you from the hectic, technology-crammed world that we live in. For starters, switch off your tech a couple of hours before bedtime – that includes your phone! Pick up a good book and get stuck into it rather than checking how many likes your latest post on Instagram got! Another thing that’ll be sure to help you sleep better is avoiding drinking alcohol or caffeine before bed, opt for water as a healthier option to quench your thirst. One way to ensure you sleep well at night is to stop napping during the day, if you got a good night’s sleep then you wouldn’t need to nap!
Stress and Worry Scientists have found a direct correlation between anxiety and the rhythm of sleep. When a person is anxious, their heart rate increases, which causes the brain to ‘race’. An alert mind produces beta waves, making you far too stimulated to sleep. To make matters worse, an active brain triggers other worries, so it’s even harder to achieve sleep. Once this pattern sets in, bedtime can become a thing of anxiety. To help with anxiety and stress, consider visiting your local GP to find ways to help combat your stress.
Diet They say you are what you eat, and when it comes to getting a restful night’s sleep, the food and drink you consume have a drastic effect. The best foods for sleep include milk, cherries, chicken and rice, while fatty meat, curry and alcohol are some of the worst. Some people choose not to
eat after 6 pm, as late meals can make it difficult to sleep. However, if you are eating before bed, remember that there three main chemicals that promote good sleep: tryptophan, serotonin and melatonin.
Excercise Sports and exercise can help you to enjoy a better quality of sleep. Working out effectively can tire your body out gently, promoting a better night’s sleep. Releasing pent up tension through exercise is also highly beneficial, helping to banish stress before bedtime. Exercising also lowers your body’s temperature, which induces better sleep. When it comes to exercise, the most important thing is to feel fitter and healthier. If you are experiencing sleeping problems, try to exercise a little more or change the type of activities you do. Yoga is renowned for its relaxation and sleep benefits, while moderate-aerobic exercise like walking has been found to help people fall asleep more quickly. But remember, don’t overdo it! Contrary to popular belief, wearing yourself out physically is not likely to induce sleepiness. In fact, it can often be counter-productive, leading to additional alertness when trying to sleep.
For some people getting a good night’s sleep is easy and normal, for other’s it requires changes in both lifestyle and environment. Remember, it’s all about being aware of your surroundings and your lifestyle, small changes will make a huge difference in how you sleep. Start with sticking to a sleep schedule every day of the week (that’s right - weekends too) and then eliminate anything else that may be causing you problems sleeping to reach your ultimate goal... a full, uninterrupted night of beauty sleep. For more information on how you can get a better night’s sleep, head to www.sleepcouncil.org.uk or www. sleepfoundation.org
