Autumn is officially upon us; schools are set to return after a turbulent few months and a new normal is beginning to take shape. Settling back into a new normal will never be easy however, we have compiled some ideas together that we think will help your physical and mental health following the distressing months in lockdown. If you are searching for some motivational ways to get active around Plymouth this September then be sure to check out ‘Health After Lockdown’ on pages 22 & 23. Now that gyms are back in full swing, there is uncertainty surrounding the safety of gyms. We interviewed Fort Stamford Health & Fitness where it was clear they have gone above and beyond to protect their members from Covid-19. Follow the history of the club in an inspirational story and find out more about Fort Stamford and their safety measures. (pages 18 & 19) The disturbance of the pandemic has drastically affected local business and it is with our support that we can help to save them! We have gathered together some local events from markets and pop-up restaurants to the long-awaited Box museum! Turn to pages 12 & 13 to find out about these events and more happening in September. What better way to support your local businesses than to take a short break in Devon or Cornwall and explore what your local area has to offer! We are so fortunate to have an abundance of stunning scenery here in the South West so head to pages 8 & 9 for some unique ideas. I hope you have an enjoyable September! Enjoy this issue and stay safe!

LOCAL SHORT BREAKS AND GETAWAYS! Schools are back in September so now is the perfect time to plan a little getaway with you and you loved ones. What better place to go then Devon and Cornwall!

I

f you are looking for the perfect way to enjoy holiday time with your loved ones without the stress of travelling abroad, then a staycation might just be what you need. As we navigate our new normal, enhanced measures are set in place for UK breaks, still providing all the fun of the great outdoors but complying with the government rules set out. This means you can have peace of mind when venturing on your great UK break. The counties of Devon and Cornwall strike gold when it comes to what’s on offer, from cosy country pubs and coastal walks, to stretches of moorland and golden sand, these drawing factors have caught the eye of many over the years, making them a firm favourite for a staycation.

DEVON No two visits here are ever the same. From the Jurassic Coast and the English Riviera, to the bustling cities of Plymouth and Exeter, it offers up a range of great

family friendly resorts and cosy cottage hideaways for an unforgettable time away. The well-looked after Bantham estate has a long sandy beach, perfect for taking romantic strolls at sunset. Bantham has views of the famous Burgh Island, which is at an easy reach by car, and the River Avon that runs along the side of the beach. The beach is a great place to surf with the Bantham Surfing Academy. There is a friendly pub in Bantham village called The Sloop inn where you can enjoy some pub grub after a blustery walk, it is also a reasonably priced B&B. Thurlestone is the next beach to the left of Bantham which is similarly sandy and picturesque. Thurlestone Hotel is the perfect romantic getaway spot which boasts views of the sea, 2 pools and a golf-course. From this hotel, both Thurlestone beach and Bantham beach are easily accessible. The picturesque town of Beer is situated on the Jurassic coast. With quaint, independent shops that line the road, be sure to have a browse and support local businesses! Following the road will bring you to the shingle beach, full of fishing boats, still bringing back their daily catch. There is a coastal walk which takes you up to the headland, on the South West Coast Path, which has stunning views of the beach and town down below. Enjoy a romantic getaway up in the trees a short drive from Beer. Located 5 minutes from Honiton, The Nest

Leisure & Events growing concerns of climate change disrupting nature. Because of this, Dartmoor encourages you to wild camp at their many spots available for free! They only advise you respect the area and the wildlife with no campfires, BBQ’s, motorhomes or large groups. Only 15 minutes from Plymouth city centre, you can park at Lowery Cross car park and set up camp at the top of the hill with the endless views of Devon and Cornwall. On the other side of the hill is Burrator Reservoir which is a stunning spot to walk along at sunset. Haytor rock and all of Dartmoor’s tors are an obvious start, predominantly because you just can’t miss them! However, if you are wanting to explore the moors in more depth, the eerie, moss encased trees of Wistman’s Woods is the place to go! With a picturesque walk, starting just past Two Bridges, you will reach the 3.5 hectares of, so-say, haunted woodland. Recipe ideas

Why not try some of our seasonal recipes for September! Apples, blackberries, and courgette are among some of the great produce in season.

apple and blackberry crumble Crumble topping: 120g plain flour, 60g caster sugar, 60g unsalted butter (room temp) Fruit: 300g Braeburn apple, 30g unsalted butter, 30g demerara sugar, 115g blackberries, ¼ tsp ground cinnamon. Serves: 4 Difficulty: Easy Cook: 35 mins

One Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Tip 120g plain flour

and 60g caster sugar into a large bowl. Add 60g unsalted butter, then rub into the flour using your fingertips to make a light breadcrumb texture.

Two Sprinkle the mixture evenly over a baking sheet and

bake for 15 mins or until lightly coloured. For the compote, peel, core and cut 300g Braeburn apples into 2cm dice.

THREE Put 30g unsalted butter and 30g demerara sugar in

a medium saucepan and melt together over a medium heat. Cook for 3 mins until the mixture turns to a light caramel. Stir in the apples and cook for 3 mins. Add 115g blackberries and ¼ tsp ground cinnamon, and cook for 3 mins more. Cover, remove from the heat, then leave for 2-3 mins to continue cooking in the pan.

Four To serve, spoon the warm fruit into an ovenproof gratin dish, top with the crumble mix, then reheat in the oven for 5-10 mins. Serve with vanilla ice cream if you wish.

Chicken, plum and sweet spice traybake 6–8 skin-on chicken thighs. For the marinade - 2 plums (about 80g), quartered and stones removed, 1 tsp whole coriander seeds, 1 tsp whole fennel seeds, 1 tsp salt, 1⁄4 tsp freshly ground black pepper, 1 garlic clove, peeled, 1 tbsp demerara sugar, 3 tbsp red wine vinegar, 2 tbsp olive oil. For the roasting tray - 2–3 celery sticks, 1 onion (peeled and cut into wedges), 6 garlic cloves (unpeeled 6–8), plums (about 240g, quartered and stones removed), 1 tbsp demerara sugar, A few sprigs of tarragon, to garnish Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Serves: 3-4 Difficulty: Easy Cook: 50 mins

One Make the marinade by blitzing everything together in

a food processor until you have a smooth puree. Pour the marinade over the chicken thighs and mix well to make sure they are evenly coated. Cover and place in the fridge to marinate: a couple of hours will do the trick but you can leave it for up to 24 hours.

Two Heat your oven to 220°C/200°C fan/425°F/gas mark 7.

Place the celery, onion, garlic and half the plum quarters in a large roasting tray.

Three Top with the chicken thighs, skin-side up, and pour

any remaining marinade over the chicken. Season with some salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, then remove the tray and baste everything well with the juices that have formed at the bottom.

Four Reduce the temperature to 200°C/180°C fan/400°F/gas mark 6 and return the chicken to the oven for a further 10 minutes. Five Add the remaining plum quarters. Sprinkle with the sugar and roast for a final 10 minutes. Remove from the oven, baste again and garnish with a few tarragon sprigs before serving. 16 September 2020

Dedication, a few helpful connections and a strong passion for squash is the reason why Fort Stamford and it’s four squash courts are still here today. The backbone of Fort Stamford belongs in the hands of one very hardworking and unstoppable man, Royston Sumner. A sense of community and diversity is at the heart of this club, and Royston and his team have gone above and beyond to make Fort Stamford a very safe gym at this time of uncertainty. We spoke with Royston to discover how Fort Stamford Health & Fitness came about, a little bit about his background and the important measures they have in place to reassure their members during the coronavirus pandemic to make this club one of the safest in Plymouth.

S

quash and more latterly Racketball, are at the very heart of this health club. As a junior, Royston played when it was just a 4 court squash club sited in the dungeons of the fortress. 10 more courts were then built, with a pool and snooker room, in its moat over 40 years ago. Royston was a high profile squash player, he moved to Paignton in his mid 20’s as an insurance loss adjuster, captained the county squash team and was playing for Newton Abbot squash club at that time. It was the social side of the sport that he found almost as appealing as the sport itself! In the absence of a manager, he continued to help the owner of Fort Stamford, Ray Larson, by running tournaments, the shop and the junior section at the Fort but this was difficult given the distance involved. The heydays of the sport had passed along with the drink culture of that era. The financial viability of the club was grime. At the sprightly age of only 26, following discussions with Ray about the Forts future, Royston was not able to resist the chance of running the club himself and agreed to

18 September 2020

lease the premises in an attempt to revive the sports fortunes. “So, I gave up my suit and tie job and that was what happened.” Said Royston. Royston was never a wealthy man so his visions for the club were always thwarted by a lack of money. So long as he kept squash running, that gave him the sense of achievement he longed for. With his first loan from the bank he fixed the showers, court floors and reconfigured the bar area. More and more people came back to play squash after these changes and sure enough the club grew. Royston said, “It was a difficult concept, losing courts to save courts but that’s what I had to do!’ With Royston’s second loan from the bank he transformed a few of the courts into a typical 1990’s style gym which gave him the money to keep the remaining courts open. In 2008, not knowing the banks were on the verge of collapse, Royston embarked on a huge building project only to find the bank renege on their funding agreement. It knocked him off his feet. Royston was at the lowest point in his life where he almost lost everything. Every bank in Plymouth turned his request or monies down. Out of the blue, a ‘chap’ from Barclays in Newton Abbot phoned him up one day. In this fluke of luck, the ‘chap, Steve Reynolds, from Barclays also happened to be the treasurer of Newton Abbot Squash club and had admired Royston’s running of the Fort over the years since he left his

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

Owner Royston Sumner club. After a long day going through the project he bought into Royston and not just the business, authorised the loans and effectively saved the health club from financial ruin. With new funding, he refurbished the health club, added a jacuzzi, sauna, toning salon, and extended the pool to make it what it is today. With the investment, members came flooding in, he paid the final payment back to the bank in October 2019. Just the mortgage to go, or so he thought. Royston’s debt was not over yet for then came Coronavirus, the biggest pandemic of our lives and has forced Royston to invest further, this time in safety measures. Approximately £25,000 in fact! Royston and his team are eternally grateful for the support that the members have given during this time, this gradual flow of income enabled Fort Stamford to survive, pay the bills and to put in place the measures that members would have wanted to ensure it was a safe place to return. “I want to emphasise that the measures in place at the Fort ensure that this gym at least, was not an environment that most gyms are perceived to be” said Royston. Fort Stamford has taken some extraordinary precautionary measures above and beyond any gym we’re aware of in Plymouth. They are using products produced by TECcare called Ultra, Control and Daily to treat all surfaces. They are water based, environmentally friendly, non-corrosive and doesn’t

www.omplymouthmagazine.co.uk

Health & Beauty irritate skin. The product is applied with a spray gun which statically charges the product so that it completely envelopes the objects being treated, even the most complicated parts of gym equipment. This spray has been applied to every single bit of equipment, flooring, toilets, and all touch points and handles. This will continue to kill germs for up to 3-4 weeks. As an added precaution, they re-apply the product every 2-3 weeks for members safety. When you enter the club, your temperature is checked with a thermal imaging camera to ensure you don’t have a fever. There are disinfectant bottles located in all areas of the club available for you to wipe down any equipment you have just used. This spray provided, unlike most, won’t remove the Ultra spray from the equipment. There are plenty of hand sanitising stations dotted throughout for your personal use

Fort Stamford wants everybody to feel welcome, the young and the old. This diversity gives a great sense of community. The staff really do care about you and your health. Their membership includes the use of all the facilities but if you want to change your lifestyle, you need to exercise on a regular basis. It’s not just a question of what you do but how often you do it. When there are lots of things to do, it makes exercising regularly easier! Membership includes the use of the courts, the gym, classes, toning salon, pool and spa.

Anti-viral ventilation system

Royston said, “We haven’t put prices up at Fort Stamford for 30 years to existing members. It’s a loyalty thing, if you’ve supported us then we’ll support you.” “With most other gym’s you have to pay for advice for this and advise for that. At the Fort it’s all included in your monthly price, no add-ons and of course, we offer so many more facilities” said Royston.

Spaced out gym equipment

Members can book via reception or online using a convenient App. Non-members book direct with the club. If you are not technically minded, you can just turn up at reception, however you run the risk of the activity being fully booked. Gym entrance with temperature checker

Fort Stamford have also invested in a new sophisticated air ventilation system which kills all harmful germs in the air. This works by using ultraviolet light which kills the germs instantly and then re-disburses it as disinfected air. Walking around Fort Stamford, it is clear that they have taken all of the precautionary measures and more to be able to reassure the concerned or elderly members that this is a very safe gym and club to be in. “They were expensive measures, but they were important measures that make a clear statement that this club is a very safe club to come back to’’ said Royston.

Being healthy and keeping active is one of the most important things you should be doing especially given the current coronavirus pandemic. Not only will it get you fit and help you reach your goal weight, but exercise has so many benefits to your mental wellbeing, keeping you engaged, clearing your head and enabling you to make clearer decisions. For more information on how to stay healthy after lockdown, head to pages 22 & 23. Future plans are to provide an extended reception area and the dream of a reinstating a glass backed court Racketball has been reintroduced a sport so much easier to play than squash. It was proving really popular prior to lockdown, particularly with women. “I’m hoping that before I retire, Racketball will become more popular ensuring the viability of the courts and therefore the future of squash, the very reason I took the club on 30 years ago” said Royston.

Vegetables are super! Raising awareness of Men’s Cancers is at the heart of everything we do, and for 20 years we’ve aimed to make a marked difference to men’s health across the region.

W

e believe that when dealing with a cancer diagnosis you can feel utterly lost and out of control of your own body, and we really want to help men through this initial step, and what can help is to do something you can control in your life. It’s not only empowering, but it’s a big positive step to take when everything seems so negative, so we are helping men across the region access the best diet possible. In a pioneering pilot project for the South West, we will be working with Riverford Organic, giving 250 men who are newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, two free veg boxes and a cookery book to set them on a more healthier journey, helping to not only take back a little bit of control, but to help live well during cancer treatments. We will be launching this project at two local hospitals this autumn and also following this up with a special support group taster session, where patients can learn about different veg and how to cook them. More than 47,000

new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year, that’s 129 men a day yet less than 30% of people know where the prostate gland is, let alone what it does, so a lot of work is still needed. The success of the Chestnut Appeal is a testament to what can be achieved if we work together as a community. Over the coming years, we aim to improve these vital services and do much more in the area, helping reach more of the community. We have a lot to be thankful for, and a huge

amount to do in the future to ensure men’s health is continually talked about, that the South West corner of the UK isn’t forgotten about and, that we’re able to attract the very best technologies to the area. This is why we hold events like our swims, and this is why we encourage groups and clubs to fundraise for the charity, so we can keep our vital work going and help as many people as possible in our area. During the pandemic charities have suffered in fact, UK charities are struggling to cope with a £10bn shortfall caused by soaring demand for their services and lost fundraising income due to the coronavirus pandemic, a study by Pro Bono Economics, an independent charity, shows. Over the years we’ve realised that Men’s Health suffers from an imbalance and at the core of our work is highlighting this most common cancer in men, as well as Prostate Cancer, we also raise awareness of Testicular Cancer and Penile Cancer, two other quite treatable cancers that sadly if left can be devastating. We believe it is vital to get more men talking about their health and taking action when they feel like something could be wrong, and a lot of our time is spent out in the community giving free talks and seminars about these three cancers. We also run a local support group online and in the community, we try to be there to help as much as we can. So please consider supporting your local charity. HEALTH AFTER LOCKDOWN

Finding a new normal can be challenging, so we are sharing some of our ideas on how to stay healthy after lockdown.

E

arlier in the year, we were told very abruptly to stay at home, wash our hands frequently and avoid any social interactions with people outside of our household. The biggest pandemic of our lifetime was happening right in front of our very eyes, and it was to no-one’s surprise that we saw a considerable rise in mental health cases within the first two weeks of lockdown. Let’s face it, we have had a whirlwind of a year already which has certainly taken a strain on our health and wellbeing. It is now more important than ever to keep our bodies healthy but not forget our minds as well.

MENTAL HEALTH It is a human’s natural instinct to talk, interact and be around other human beings. When you take this out of someone’s day-to-day life, even for one day, it can have considerable negative impacts on their mental health. We, as a nation, had to do this for over 3 months solid. We often see social media as a burden to society however, throughout lockdown, social media has been our means of keeping somewhat sane. Having the ability to see our friends and family over a video call or be able to message

them whenever we were feeling lonely has been the best medicine any doctor could prescribe. Schools are set to begin again in September and for some children, they haven’t been to school since March. To say they have had a change to their lives is an understatement. The government has observed children as being very versatile, they can adapt to changing situations very quickly but this doesn’t mean it won’t affect them at all. Children and teenagers may react very differently to starting school again. Each and every pupil would have suffered a loss over lockdown, whether that be a relative who has passed or a loss of social interaction and routine. If you are a parent or teacher, look carefully for signs of withdraw, anger, sadness or anxiety as everyone will react in different ways. The same can be said for adults returning to work. There are plenty of specialist websites or phone lines you can contact or refer to if you are worried about yourself or your loved ones. For example, Samaritans and One You & Anxiety UK. The main thing to remember is that listening is enough. If you are not confident speaking about mental health yourself, allow another person to be able to speak to you. It can take a while for someone to open up to you, so start by talking about a common interest you have perhaps. Talking is the best way to take the weight off your shoulders. Meeting with friends and family outside of your household is still restricted to 1 metre however we encourage you do meet up for a socially distanced catch up as we are a nation that has been

22 September 2020

Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007

deprived of this for quite some time. As we mentioned previously, talking is one of the best ways to reduce stress and ease anxiety which will, in turn, benefit your mental health. Completing mindfulness activities like sports, meditation, yoga; anything that enables you to concentrate on that particular hobby is a great way to distract the mind from any worries or anxieties.

Exercise During lockdown, there has been an increased number of people nationwide who jumped on the home workouts wagon or taking more time out of their day to do a form of exercise. Now that our schedules are slowly filling back up again, it is so important not to neglect exercise. The easiest form of exercise is walking. We do it every day. It is free, simple and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight and become healthier. A powerwalk for 10 minutes a

MAKING A WILL DURING LOCKDOWN - HOWARD & OVER

W

probate process much easier for loved ones that you are leaving behind.

hilst it has always been important to make sure that you have a Will in place, the recent pandemic has made even the most confident amongst us think about their mortality and for this reason the Law Society has reported a significant increase in people choosing to make a Will.

‘LOCKDOWN WILLS’ The improvement of video calling technology has allowed solicitors to safely take instructions from clients during lockdown and continue to draft Wills whether in the office or whilst working from home however the difficulty arises when it comes to signing the documents.

Making a Will is important for many reasons. Rather than leave the government’s Intestacy Rules to decide who should inherit and have the right to deal with your assets (which is the case if you do not have a Will in place), if you have made a Will you instead get to decide who should sort out the paperwork upon your death, who you wish to receive your property, personal possessions and bank accounts, decide upon funeral wishes and appoint who is to be a guardian for your children.

It is vital that a Will be completed correctly. If a Will does not meet with the formal requirements, then it will not be valid. One of the requirements for a valid Will are for it to be signed in the presence of two witnesses. The witnesses must be independent therefore they cannot be family members, they must not be inheriting anything in your Will and they must be over the age of 18.

By making a Will you can also help to reduce the Inheritance Tax payable on your death as a solicitor can make sure that you leave your estate in the most tax efficient manner. It can also be used to reduce liability for nursing home fees in the future.

The requirement for two independent witnesses has caused problems for those wishing to execute their Wills whilst isolating during the Coronavirus outbreak. The social distancing rules in place currently do not allow contact with anyone from outside of your household. Despite calls for the strict Will signing

Having a Will in place will also make the

requirements to be relaxed during the pandemic such as by reducing the requirement to one witness or by allowing the documents to be witnessed via a video call, the government has not made any changes to the law to date. Instead, we are now seeing the witnessing of Wills being forced to take place in an outside environment, with PPE and through windows. These unconventional methods however have allowed us to continue to ensure that Wills are executed validly and give peace of mind to our clients. If you would like to make a Will, please contact Katherine Millman on 01752 690123, a partner at Howard and Over Solicitors. Katherine also deals with Lasting Powers of Attorney and Probate. AUTUMN EQUINOX Tuesday 22nd September

The Autumn Equinox is an important event that everyone can celebrate. Read on to find out more about what it is, the harvest moon, celebrations and more!

T

he Autumn Equinox is a special time for those who celebrate the beginning of Autumn. Many go out and take a glimpse up at the blissful moon that lights up their land or coastline. Just make sure you are ready on the 22nd of September! WHAT IS IT? For those of you who may not be entirely familiar with what an Equinox is. It is two moments in the year when the sun shines directly on the equator and where night and day are nearly exactly the same length – 12 hours – all over the world. This is the reason it’s called an “equinox,” derived from Latin, meaning “equal night” (depending on location). The autumnal equinox occurs in September each year whilst the spring equinox happens in March. In the Northern Hemisphere the date marks the end of Summer and signifies the beginning of Autumn! This year the autumnal equinox will occur on Tuesday 22nd of September at 2.30pm. After the autumnal equinox, the sun is rising later and nightfall comes sooner.

HARVEST MOON / CORN MOON Although the harvest moon is on October 1st this year, every 3 years to be precise, (most years it is in September) it is highly associated with the autumn equinox too! September 2nd is also a time for the corn moon to take place so get ready to look up at the night sky for an exceptionally bright moon to dazzle your horizons.

pagan times. Harvest festivals traditionally were held on the Sunday nearest the Harvest Moon. Thanksgiving celebrations are both worldwide and very ancient. People celebrate this day by singing, praying and decorating our churches with baskets of fruit and food. Early English settlers took the harvest festival tradition with them to America. These traditional festivals, once celebrated around the equinox, formed the basis of American Thanksgiving, which they now celebrate in November.

STONEHENGE Archaeologists believe a number of prehistoric sites were used by ancient people to track the position of the sun and predict equinoxes and solstices. Some of these sites include Stonehenge and Newgrange in the UK! Did you know? Because the moon is particularly bright and rises early, in the past this allowed farmers to extend their working day so the name ‘harvest moon’ comes from when farmers harvested the last of their summer crops in the prolonged evening moonlight before winter came along.

Each year on the 22nd / 23rd September Druids, Pagans, families, tourists and travellers gather at Stonehenge early in the morning to mark the Spring Equinox and to see the sunrise above the stones. It Is definitely a great spiritual experience!

TIME FOR CELEBRATION What better way to celebrate this transitional time of year by marking the September equinox with a harvest festival? That time of the year when all the crops have been harvested, the Harvest Festival is a celebration of the food grown on the land! The people of the British Isles have given thanks at Autumn harvest festivals since
