Move forward with confidence & happiness Hypnotherapy is a natural, affordable and effective way to help with many issues including anxiety, phobias & fears, depression, stopping smoking, stress, weight problems and much more. But what really is hypnosis and could it be beneficial to you? Hypnosis is a safe, normal and natural state that is a gentle but effective way of dealing with many emotional and psychological issues. Put simply, hypnosis is merely the natural harnessing of focused thought. It is what we focus on that provides us with an emotional response. Imagine lying on a sunny beach in your favourite holiday destination or winning a sporting event, both involve a
trance state of some description therefore when this state is appropriately placed in a therapeutic setting, it can be helpful to the client and help make a positive, lasting change. When entering hypnosis on the therapists couch, you are in a relaxed, pleasant but concentrated state where you have much heightened awareness. It is said that our brain is more active and alert at night when, for example, we are dreaming. Therefore, when replicating this ‘dream like’ state on the therapists couch, the subconscious mind is more susceptible to positive suggestion and therapeutic change. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is the combination of trance and modern, scientifically researched talking therapies, all of which help to aid in positive change. By giving the client the understanding of why they feel the way they do and importantly, what we can do

Call for NHS staff to say sorry when things go wrong The Health Secretary has called for doctors and nurses to be more open, honest and ‘say sorry’ to patients when there are failures in patient care. eremy Hunt has confirmed new recommendations will be sent to every hospital in England and Wales to help win back trust in the NHS. To address the concerns the NHS Litigation Authority, the body which oversees claims made against the health service, has produced a leaflet for staff entitled “saying sorry”. It recommends that staff should make face-to-face apologies to patients ‘as soon as they are aware an incident has occurred’. It also advises that patients should then be given a written apology, adding that it is not like a car insurer, which can ‘withhold a claim because an apology or explanation has been given’. ‘Saying sorry is not an admission of legal liability’, the leaflet says. ‘It is the right thing to do.’ Indeed, in our experience it is often the only way to satisfy justifiable concern. The new guidance follows on from a
J
“staff should make face-to-face apologies to patients ‘as soon as they are aware an incident has occurred” series of highly published NHS scandals during 2013 which resulted in a Public Inquiry into the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust where over 1,000 patients died. A further 11 Trusts were also put into special measures following concerns over their high mortality rates. In response to the Francis Inquiry into care failings at Stafford hospital, a ‘statutory duty of candour’ was introduced, meaning families must be informed if errors in treatment cause death or serious injury. The chief executive of the NHS Litigation Authority has stated that “saying sorry” is the human and moral thing to do and confirmed to the Trusts’ that they will not say ‘we’re not going to cover you because you’ve said sorry’. This combined with new guidelines about
whistleblowing, should now lead to more openness and willingness for doctors and nurses to come clean and report mistakes at a much earlier stage. In cases where people perhaps bring a claim out of frustration, because they do not feel that they have been given an explanation or that their complaints have been heard, an apology may make them less likely to pursue an action. Unfortunately, things do go wrong and the outcome of a medical investigation

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Raise your spirits with the sun’s rays One of the reasons we all feel happier when the sun’s shining is because it’s quite literally doing us the power of good.
S
unlight is our biggest source of vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones. A daily dose enhances your immune system, encourages healthy circulation and increases the brain’s production of the feel-good hormones, endorphins and serotonin. Getting enough sunlight during the day can also help us sleep better at night as it results in increased melatonin, enhancing restful sleep and slowing down the ageing process. Sunlight even helps to balance out hormones and can work towards relieving the symptoms of PMS! Of course, how long we spend sunning ourselves varies from person to person and the amount of time needed to spend in the sun for your skin to make enough vitamin D depends on a number of factors. These include your skin type, for
example how dark your skin is or how easily you get sunburnt, the time of year and the time of day. The NHS advises to only have short daily periods of sun exposure without sunscreen on summer days, especially between 11am and 3pm. But be warned - a short period in the sun means a matter of minutes: about 10 to 15 minutes for most people (less than the time it takes you to start going red or burn). This is more than enough for most people to make enough vitamin D. The larger the area of your skin that is exposed to sunlight, the more chance there is of making enough vitamin D before you start to change colour.
“A daily dose enhances your immune system, encourages healthy circulation and increases the brain’s production of the feel-good hormones”
Remember - the longer you stay in the sun, especially for prolonged periods without protection, the greater the risk of skin cancer. It is essential to protect your skin to prevent you from burning, so cover up and use sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 or more.

Thousands of ladies will unite at St Luke’s Midnight Walk! Plymouth is once again set to become a sea of pink t-shirts and flashing tiaras as thousands of ladies unite at the annual Midnight Walk for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth on Saturday 19th July 2014.
A
s the women of Devon and Cornwall sign up in their hundreds week by week, for many the realisation of the training and preparation required to tackle the 3, 7 or 15 mile challenges that lie ahead become a reality. Wendy Jones and Margaret McArthur are two friends who are Midnight Walk pros having participated in all 7 consecutive walks, and they have the collection of t-shirts to prove it! Both are keen walkers, however, for one of the ladies to ensure she is in tip top condition, a very unique training technique is put into place, “My training consists of walking twice a day the 26 flights of stairs to the 13th floor of the Civic Centre to reach my desk, it certainly keeps me fit and helps on the Plymouth hills” says Wendy from Woolwell. Walking in memory of her late mum Daisy Winfield, Wendy adds “My mum always supported St Luke’s and the Midnight Walk is a great way for me to honour her life. I think St Luke’s is such a great cause, everybody knows somebody who is touched by the charity. There is such a great atmosphere on the night, I have walked it both with a large group of friends
and by myself, making new friends along the way. Everybody has their own personal reason for taking part and as you chat to fellow walkers you feel really privileged to hear their special stories relating to why they are walking”. Midnight Walk returns on Saturday 19th July 2014 from a brand new location, The University of St Mark & St John Plymouth. Revamped and refreshed, St Luke’s promise this year will the best yet, introducing brand new routes across a choice of a 3 mile, 7 mile, or 15 mile walk. Leading the ladies this year will be special guest, British Olympic Bronze medallist, Cassie Patten “I am so privileged to be asked to lead the ladies on what is such an amazing event. St Luke’s plays such a big role in our area. I look forward to meeting all the walkers on the night and would encourage anyone who hasn’t signed up to get behind Team St Luke’s”. The event will start and finish at The University College of St Mark & St John Sport Centre, a move from Central Park last year. “The University of St Mark and St John are extremely pleased to be supporting St Luke’s Hospice this year, a well-known local charity who has touched the lives of many” said Simon White, Sports Centre Manager. “We should all incorporate some exercise into our daily lives, and whether you want to take part to achieve a personal fitness

goal or to raise money for a good cause, we believe this event will cater for all” adds Simon. Over the past seven years 12,963 ladies have walked over 151,000 miles raising an amazing £1.2 million for St Luke’s. St Luke’s aim to attract over 2,500 women this year and hope to raise over £200,000 for patient care. So why should you sign up and how will your fundraising money be spent? Event’s Fundraiser, Emma Winter explains “At St Luke’s we care for patients in the last months, weeks and days of life; at our In Patient Unit at Turnchapel, leading on all end of life care at Derriford Hospital and caring for patients at home. In fact, it is the work of our Community Nurses, Social Workers and Occupational Therapists providing this care at home where your Midnight Walk fundraising money will reach the largest number of people. We care for over 350 patients at any one time at home, not just in Plymouth but spanning out to Tavistock, Dartmoor, South Brent and into the South Hams. Our vision is a community where no person has to die alone, in pain or in distress and we can only do this by the generous support of our local community. Please show your support to St Luke’s and your local community by signing up today. We can only do it with your help”. If you have been inspired by this story, you can register online now! Visit www.stlukesmidnightwalk.co.uk, pick up a registration form from your local St Luke’s Charity Shop, or call 01752 492626.

“We want to highlight Plymouth’s strengths, but question its weaknesses too” Radio Plymouth continue to work hard providing relevant local news which makes you want to listen.
T
o say that you have to be prepared for anything while working for Radio Plymouth news is a bit of an understatement. In February, I had around an hour’s notice to go and interview David Cameron at Laira Rail Depot. It is slightly surreal when you find yourself crammed into a small room with other media and are then given a ‘two minute warning’ by the Prime Minister’s staff. Just last month, I went along to Devonport Naval base to interview the Chancellor, George Osborne. More than twelve hours notice this time, but the surprises kept on coming. On arrival we were taken to the Royal Marines’ Tamar complex for a trip on a raiding craft, a small boat used to take Marines quickly from ship to shore. To get on board though, we needed a full body suit to keep dry. Needless to say, getting in and out of said suit and on and off the boat did not present a very elegant picture. It was a great experience though

and we were very well looked after. Since Radio Plymouth launched in early 2010, we have interviewed Tom Daley after winning his Olympic medal, stayed up all night for local and general election counts and had a bumpy land rover ride to see a new tungsten mine open at Hemerdon. We have covered the ups and downs at Plymouth Argyle and also speak weekly to the coaches at Plymouth Albion and Raiders to bring you the latest sport.

We are now the only radio station focusing on Plymouth in this way. Our team of two (myself and Broadcast Journalist Marcus Liddell) read bulletins, gather and research the news stories and write and edit them between us. We broadcast from studios near the Hoe and you’ll often see us in Plymouth city centre asking you for your views on issues like the future of Drake’s Island, the budget or an upcoming strike. We believe that providing strong local news content, in an age where news is being cut back at many stations, is vitally important. We know from social media and the response to our stories that Plymothians really care about their city and its future. Just last month, the station recorded its highest ever listening figures of more than 41,000 a week (RAJAR/ Ipsos Mori/ RSMB Quarter 1, 2014). We believe this shows that we are providing the kind of content which makes you want to listen. There is a perception that working in the media is glamorous. Shadowing a local radio journalist on a 5am start would probably disillusion most people of that. Seeing me in that body suit (thankfully there are no pictures) would probably do the same. However, that is not a complaint, because we get to meet and work with some fascinating people and there is certainly
Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007
never time to get bored. We put a lot of effort into our output to provide a news service which really examines local issues and gives you both sides of the story. We want to highlight Plymouth’s strengths, but question its weaknesses too. Plymouth has been going through a great period of change recently, with new homes and schools springing up in areas like Millbay and North Prospect. The city seems to be hosting more of the big events like La Solitaire du Figaro, MTV Crashes and the 350th anniversary of the Royal Marines. I grew up in Plymouth and am very proud to live and work here. We know that our listeners are too.

American musicians fly in to play at Jazz & Blues Festival A
merican musicians will be playing close to the Mayflower Steps at the Barbican International Jazz & Blues Festival 2014. Mississippi blues guitar-man Robin Henkel will headline the event, which takes place from June 13th-15th on The Barbican, close to where the Pilgrims left for the New World in 1620. The Festival’s music programme is due to run between midday and 9pm on Friday and Saturday, midday to 7pm on the Sunday on an outdoor stage entertaining onlookers with excellent and free music! Robin Henkel will be joined by Ric Lee, award-winning drummer and descendant of Robert E. Lee, the head of the Confederate Army in the American Civil War. The pair will appear on Friday night at the Festival, performing vintage blues in front of the crowds at this free outdoor event. They will be joined by South West-based soul-blues singer Mama Tokus. “It’s great that we have got some Americans flying into play our event,” said Dan Thompson, Festival Director. “We’re showcasing two great American artforms: blues and jazz. It’s perfect that we’re welcoming musicians from across The Pond”. Robin Henkel performs slide guitar and country blues drawing from the music and styles of pioneers like Robert Johnson, Fred McDowell and Elmore James. He has performed with Jimmy Witherspoon, Lowell Fulson, Buddy Miles and Big Jay McNeely and he’s opened shows for BB King, Dizzie Gillespie, Bonnie Raitt, Dr John and John Mayall. Ric Lee has performed at the Festival before. In 2012 his band The Bayou Brothers stole the show when they whipped

up the crowds with their infectious zydecoblues – a Louisiana version of the blues, performed with accordion and rub-board. The Bayou Brothers won San Diego’s Best Blues Band award last year. After meeting Ric at the Festival in 2012, Mama Tokus was invited to perform in California in May 2013 with Ric and Robin. Now the musical exchange continues as the guys fly this way across the Atlantic.
Excellent local musicians showcased... The Festival is also showcasing top local musicians in its programming. Opening the Festival is Singapore-born, Torpoint-resident guitar man Jimmy Appudurai-Chai - a blues guitar artist whose claim to fame was knocking the Beatles off the Number 1 spot in his home country in 1969. You’ll see The Diehards - led by Plymouth slide blues supremo Thomas Ford, and infectious jump-jive boogie-woogie outfit The Roosters. The Co-operative Big Band opens proceedings on Saturday lunchtime, playing a set of funk and fusion, then you’ll hear The Blow-Up, perfoming versions of soundtracks and cinematic jazz. On Saturday night there will be a premiere of brand-new rhythm’n’blues outfit The Primitive Noise Band, fronted by superb songstress Becky Brine. On Sunday, listen out for trad-jazz trombonist Roger Marks and his Armada Jazz Band and swing big-band The Solar System, fronted by Rat Pack-inspired Michael Campari. The Festival is brought to a close by Company B, performing swing, jump-jive and wartime-inspired rhythm’n’blues.

Shake off any excess marinade, then thread the chicken pieces and cherry tomatoes onto the pre-soaked skewers. EMPLOYMENT
Finding your dream job Sell yourself!
Whether you are currently looking for work, or looking for a change in career, you may have found searching for jobs can be hard work. The job market has never been so competitive, so knowing where to look and how to stand out is vital. Here are some top tips to help make the process easier and help you on your way to finding your dream job. By Ashley Meads.
Writing your C.V. The first place to start when looking for a new job is to make sure you write a great CV. Your CV is often the first impression potential employers get of you. Here are a few tips to help you get started in creating a successful C.V. Be honest – anything you write on your CV will be asked about at interview, so make sure it’s true! Use the KISS principle - Keep It Short and Simple. You don’t want to overwhelm the person reading your CV, so make sure it is clear and concise. Avoid writing a story - Use formatting and bullet points to order your experience and skills, rather than writing it as a story.
Things to Include Personal statement - This is your chance to write about yourself and what you have to offer. Work history - Add the most detail to
your last 3 posts, including responsibilities, key achievements and skills gained. Include dates of employment for all posts and try to explain gaps where you can.
32 June 2014
Education - Start with your most recent education and training, with dates and qualifications gained. Transferable skills - These are the core
skills which you could bring to your new role.
Relevant interests - Only include things which will benefit your employer, such as keeping fit, keeping up with industry news, and taking part in related groups/activities. Avoid things like “socialising with friends”, “watching TV” and “Music” as these add no value to your employer.
Make sure you tailor your CV to the type of role you are applying for. For example, if you are going for a retail job, expand more on your retail experience and use key words and skills that relate to working with people. For a good example of a good and a bad CV, go to www.kent.ac.uk/careers/cv/ goodbadCV.
Send a Cover Letter When applying either in person, in writing or via email, it’s always worth sending a cover letter with your CV. When writing a cover letter, use the specification supplied and give examples of when you have proved that you meet these. Try to sell yourself here, but
Call Oracle Magazine 01752 691007
don’t go over the top and try make sure you remain humble. Limit your cover letter to one page of A4.
Where to look Knowing where to look for jobs can be a challenge. We have listed some of the best websites below but, here are some tips when online job searching: Narrow your search terms - If you don’t narrow your focus, you’ll have to trawl through hundreds of unsuitable jobs. Be aware of adverts that sound too good to be true - Phrases like “No experience needed”, “Immediate start”, “Business development program” indicate commission only sales roles that are usually multi-level marketing, door to door sales jobs. Don’t overload yourself - It may be tempting to fire off a lot of applications all at once, and this is easy to do online, but its best to keep a limit on how many active applications you have so if you are contacted, you know the role. Update your CV - Don’t use a standard CV for all applications, send the one tailored to the posts you’re applying for. Be realistic – Don’t apply for jobs many miles away if you aren’t willing to relocate and don’t apply for roles that you are not qualified/experienced for.
