Health Benefits For Your Pets Records of the beneficial Aloe Barbadensis plant were found on Sumerian clay tablets from as early as 1750 BC. Its medicinal properties have been used by veterinary practices for over 200 years.
S
cientists discovered the most potent part of the Aloe Vera plant within the inner leaf, identifying 75 known nutrients divided into vitamins, minerals and amino acids. The plant is famously known as the Miracle Plant, the Silent Healer, the Burn Plant or even the Medicine Plant. Aloe Vera, in gel form, is anti-inflammatory and provides the 7 out of 8 essential amino acids your body needs to create protein, required also by animals. It works by promoting cell growth and healing in damaged areas of tissue and immune system functionality. 100% natural true aloe (gel must contain at least 85% certified Aloe Vera to class as true aloe) has powerful healing benefits, helping to alleviate skin problems, the digestive system and the respiratory system. Other benefits of the plant include helping your body with weight management, boosting immunity and reducing inflammation.
and gentle formula, Aloe Vera products can further be used to help alleviate your pet’s condition as a first aid treatment if a veterinary surgeon is not immediately available. The gel and spray solutions can benefit your pets in the following ways: ◊ Allergies - the most common immunological system problems are asthma, arthritis, hay fever and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. True aloe can be given to pets, in its gel form, through oral administration in their food. ◊ Skin problems - your pet may have a certain type of dermatitis such as eczema, an abscess or a fungal infection. Applying a topical preparation of the gel directly to the skin 4-6 times daily initially, then twice daily as the condition improves, will dramatically reduce itching and discharge. Take care not to over-wash areas of skin and always consult a veterinary surgeon first, as self diagnosis may be dangerous.
Forever Living stocks a whole range of Aloe products ranging from heat gel, shampoos and essential oils through to vitamins, drinks and dermatologically tested cosmetics.
◊ Wounds, Minor Burns and Abrasions - responding particularly well to Aloe Vera, the gel encourages wounds to heal quicker. Ensure to keep the wound or burn clean and moist; in the case of a minor burn, run cold water over the affected area first.
Forever’s specialist range is certified by the International Aloe Science Council. With the renowned healing properties
◊ Digestive system problems - the most useful preparations for use in the mouth are Aloe Vera spray solutions.
Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts
Conditions such as gingivitis and oral ulceration can be helped using these solutions. Vomiting and diarrhoea also respond positively to oral administration of the gel. ◊ Ear and Eye Conditions - an ear infection caused by bacteria, fungi or yeasts can be treated with an Aloe Vera solution, Gelly and Bee Propolis. Make sure to contact a veterinary surgeon first to examine the underlying issue. These forms of treatments can be used on many domesticated pets and farm animals including dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, chinchillas, horses, sheep, pigs and cows. Aloe Vera gel, when applied frequently, can aid in fading scar tissue. It is suitable for general daily care of your pet’s skin and fur. Is Stress Making our Kids Obese?
By Barbara Burgess
There is a lot in the news at the moment about childhood obesity. Statistics are showing that 1 in 10 children are obese in Reception classes and that rises to 1 in 5 by the end of primary school.
S
tudies are showing that lack of garden play space a general lack of activity & ‘summer treats’ are adding to the problem as children gain more weight over the summer holidays. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt outlined new ‘obesity plans’ intended to “change the mindset of the next generation of children and their families”. The plan is for schools to teach the kids and for them to teach their parents. So what is going wrong with the ‘mindset’? Is it perhaps that we are overworked and stressed? There are more families where both parents are working than ever before. This is also true of lone parents. So looking after children becomes another challenge to add to the workload. A study at the Pennsylvania State University showed that levels of the stress hormone cortisol are raised in women when they go home from work to their families – and this is the hormone that has been shown to increase weight gain, encouraging the storage of internal ‘visceral’ fat which is the most dangerous fat. Cortisol also increases the desire for the 50/50 sweet/fatty foods that are the absolute worst for addictiveness and weight gain. Could this be a clue to childhood obesity – are our children more stressed?
Our society has increased the stress levels on kids, overscheduling their lives, increasing testing in schools at even earlier ages, increasing their workloads (even giving 5yr olds homework) and reducing their play time. It has been shown that young kids’ cortisol levels increase when they are in childcare for long periods, rather than at home. We know that physical activity helps to keep stress at bay and children are not encouraged to play outside as they used to because it is considered a dangerous place to be; with fewer and smaller gardens, less safe play areas, more traffic and the media built fear of paedophiles on every street corner. Also, most kids will tell you, what stresses them most is their parents’ stress levels. Logic says that this might be a good area to look into if we want to reduce childhood obesity. So what can you do to help decrease your kids stress and fight obesity? • Exercise fools the body into believing it has ‘escaped’ the cause of the stress. Make it ‘play’ though, put some music on and dance around!
Please mention Oracle Magazine when responding to adverts
• Eating well; that’s good nutrition eaten mindfully and slowly – and don’t tell them to ‘finish your food’ (Never make meals a battleground – you won’t win!) • A little of what you fancy – one piece of chocolate or one biscuit will satisfy the desire for the sweet/fat content. • Don’t over-schedule their time • Spend quality time with them, whether it is talking about their day or their worries or playing a game with them. • Sleep well – a good bedtime routine (which can include that ‘quality time’) will get them ready for sleep. Children need 9-11 hrs depending on their age. And turn off the bright lights of TV and computers last thing at night; they affect circadian rhythms that tell the body when to sleep. • Finally, manage your own stress – children look to their parents to learn how to behave, give yourself ‘me time’ and they will learn to do the same.

October 2015 13
On Saturday the 31st of October children will roam the neighbourhoods of Devon dressed in their spookiest costumes - from ghouls to goblins, witches to vampires and werewolves to zombies - knocking from door-to-door, looking for tantalising treats to feast on and victims to trick if no treats are given to them. But how do other countries all over the globe celebrate Halloween? By Harriet McClure
T
he origins of Halloween come from ancient religious rituals, dating back to the ancient Celtic end-of-summer festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). 2,000 years ago, the Celts, who lived in the area that is now the UK, Ireland and Northern France, celebrated the New Year on November the 1st.
as we know it today, Halloween.
when millions of Irish folk fled the potato famine of 1846.
Many UK and Ireland Halloween traditions, such as trick-or-treating, stem back as far as 1000 AD. Poor citizens would knock from door-to-door, begging for food in exchange for songs and prayers to commemorate passed loved ones.
Trick-or-treating specifically became popular in early 1940s America after the World War 2 sugar rations were lifted, following on from the movement to turn Halloween into a communitycentred holiday in the 1800s.
They believed that at the end of the year, on the night of October the 31st, spirits came back from the dead to wander amongst the living.
These citizens were known as soulers because the food they received was known as a soul-cake: a small round cake with a cross marked on top which, when eaten, symbolised a soul being freed from Purgatory.
In the 9th century, the influence of Christianity had spread into the Celtic lands, and the Catholic Church eventually declared November the 2nd as All Soul’s Day – a day to honour the dead. It’s widely believed that the Catholic Church wished to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a churchsanctioned holiday, therefore the term All Soul’s Day eventually transformed into the name All Hallow’s Eve; and
Later in the 19th century, the tradition of souling was adapted into what is known as guising in which instead of offering a prayer, children would perform songs, recite poems, tell jokes, play instruments or play a trick in return for coins. The celebration of Halloween came to America at this point in history
The tradition of trick-or-treating today is associated with dressing in a disguising costume. When the Celts believed spirits came back from the dead, they also thought that citizens would encounter ghosts if they left the safety of their homes. Therefore, upon venturing out into the cold of the night, people would wear masks so as to not be recognised by the ghosts. Today, in the UK, Halloween is celebrated as the third biggest holiday after Christmas and New Years Eve. Traditional activites range from ghost walks, lighting bonfires, pumpkin carving, apple-bobbing and of course,
trick-or-treating at night. Many countries around the globe traditionally celebrate the holiday of Halloween. In Mexico, Latin America and Spain, citizens celebrate the Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in which they honour the spirits of deceased loved ones who have returned from heaven to enjoy the festivities. Breads, candies and other foods are made into iconic shapes of skulls and skeletons. In Germany, Halloween has gained its popularity in the past decade ,as many of the older generation believe that Halloween is merely an Americanised, commercial holiday. However, one long-standing tradition is to hide knives so as to not risk
“ ”
The origins of Halloween date back to the ancient Celtic end-of-summer festival of Samhain
harm to (or from) the returning spirits. Japan embraces Halloween as a Western-style tradition and hold themed events at their Disneyland and Universal Studios theme parks. Japanese Buddhists also honour the spirits of their ancestors in a tradition known as Bon Festival. In China, the Halloween festival is named Teng Chieh. Food and water are placed in front of family photographs of deceased loved ones. Bonfires and lanterns are also lit to guide their spirits safely back to earth. In Austria, for Seleenwochen (Alls Soul’s Week) it’s also tradtional to place bread, water and a lighted lamp on a bedside table before sleeping. This welcomes the dead souls back to earth. Austrian Catholics celebrate this period from October 30th to November 8th. Halloween is not typically a part of Australian culture, however is celebrated non-religiously as result of America’s pop-culture influence. Trick-or-treating is also rare in France as they do not traditionally celebrate the holiday; neither does the country of Russia. Sweden celebrates Halloween, known to them as Alla Helgons Dag, from the 31st of October to November the 6th. As with many other countries’ celebrations, the day becomes a shortened working day or vacation. Some countries follow similar practises and superstitions to those originating in the UK and Ireland. The Belgians believe it unlucky for a black cat to cross their path or enter their home. Other popular superstitions originating from the Celts say that if a member of the house sees a spider on All Hallows Eve, it is the soul of the deceased member of their family. Nuts, apples and candles are symbols of magic charms, and if the flame on a candle goes out, it means there is a spirit in the house. According to legend, walking three times backwards around your home will keep away those unwanted, evil spirits!

Eat the season: Squash
S
quash come in all shapes and sizes. Along with pumpkins, they are part of the Cucurbitaceae family, along with courgettes and marrows, but are distinguished by the fact that their fruits are harvested mature and can last very well, making them a useful staple through Autumn and Winter (and often beyond). Squash has been a staple for the Native Americans for more than 5,000 years. We sow our squash in small pots in late April for planting out in mid-May. They will not tolerate frost and we sometimes use crop covers to get them off to a good start. We grow a range of squash including sugar pumpkins, butternut, kabocha, and crown prince. They bruise easily so harvesting involves gently hand placing each one into straw-layered wooden crates. Unlike most veg (though technically they are a fruit), squash are happier in a snug kitchen than a fridge, so make the most of this by using them as a rustic decoration: perhaps
piled together in a tumble of colour on a kitchen table, or cheerily dotted along a windowsill. Tasty and pretty – now that’s value for money! To prepare squash, knock off the stem and push a sharp knife into the centre. Work it around and split the squash in half. If the skin is too hard for a peeler, use a knife by placing the squash half face down on a board, working round with a knife and cutting the skin off. Make sure you never put a whole squash in the oven as it will explode. Cut it in half and de-seed first. The seeds and inside trimmings from squash can be added to homemade veg stock to add a vibrant colour. We offer a seasonal squash box which includes a 7kg assortment of different squash in an array of colours. Visit www.riverford.co.uk to find out more.
Have you ever tried eating in The Riverford Field Kitchen?
We think great food tastes even better when you enjoy it with other people, so you will share your table with fellow diners for a feast of the freshest seasonal produce from our fields. Uniquely, there is just one sitting and the whole restaurant is served together at the same time. For lunch we start things off with a seasonal salad followed by creative vegetable side dishes and one meat dish served to the table for you to pass around and share. Portions are generous and there’ll be plenty to go round. When it comes to pudding, we’ll invite you up to the kitchen to choose from a wickedly tempting selection. Supper is a slightly more lavish affair with four vegetable anti-pasti dishes to start your evening. We are fully licensed and have a selection of organic wine, local juices, beers and cider, as well as some spirits. We are a family-friendly restaurant and children of all ages are very welcome. There is a toy box with children’s books, colouring sheets, baby changing facilities, highchairs and large lawn for kids to run around on. We don’t serve a children’s menu, they will share the same food as adults. Children aged 3-12yrs are half-price and infants under 3yrs are free of charge.

PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES
YOUR MORTGAGE & PROTECTION SPECIALISTS become a grounding reason for starting Mortgages4Plymouth in 2000. In 1909, Churchill had talked of the impact that death could have on families as, "women and children and estates are left to struggle in the dark waters of a friendless world". These words propelled Tricia on a journey to become one of the leading experts on assurance - something she is still passionate about today.

F
or many of us, childhood memories include collecting apples and popping them into a basket to take home for supper. For Tricia Kennedy it was the act of an eight year old who would go on to become one of the city's leading entrepreneurs. The future founder of Mortgages4Plymouth had stumbled across the fruit as they lay on the ground. Still fresh, the enterprising child decided that she could collect them and then raffle the resulting basket of goodies. At the time Tricia needed the pocket money and selling raffle tickets seemed the way forward. It was a childhood decision that was to sow the seeds of success for her adult life. This fond early childhood memory was to set her along a path to establishing her business today as an assurance and mortgage broker. Her message is that, quite literally, anyone can make it. Throughout her school career, she completed her O Levels and A Levels in quick succession over the course of just one year. Tricia ventured on to study at Teacher Training College, however decided it was not for her. Her turning point then came when she discovered her natural business ability

during a period of life in which she worked for a company selling fancy goods. At first, Tricia was provided with a Mini to visit customers, however was then given a transit van to travel the coast of Britain selling the goods. She often slept in the back of the van to save money in order to allow her to buy her first home.
The words are still readily accessible in one of her files in her office and they act as a constant reminder for the importance of assurance and, as such, the provision for families if one of the breadwinners was to pass away unexpectedly. "People are shocked when they realise the importance of assurance which they may not have in place for their health and also for their families," explains Tricia. It is her drive to put the client (and their families) first, ahead of profit, that has helped Tricia, and her team, to win so many awards.
Tricia was invited to an interview with a prestigious financial services company but due to her lack of confidence, she declined. However, the company, seeing something in Tricia, contacted her and offered her the chance to attend a financial training course to develop her self confidence. It was at this turning point, aged 29, in which Tricia discovered her true vocation and her calling in life. Her enthusiasm for the subject was such that even a broken foot didn't stop her from starting her career. Tricia can still remember sawing off the cast with a bread knife, whilst sat in a warm bath, so she could "get out there" and start working. Around the same time, she read a quote from Winston Churchill that was to have a profound effect on her and so shape the future of her life. His words would

AND ENTREPRENEURS They have consistently won the "Best of the Best" which runs within their company network and covers mortgages and protection. Tricia has won Quality of Business Awards, and also Club Elite accolades, that have led her to provide presentations in London and so have cemented her reputation in the financial services world.
Tony Cobley Photography
For more than 35 years, 25 of which she worked as a full financial planner, her work has given her the relaxed confidence to be able to help people in a vast array of differing situations from the recently bereaved, to divorcees, and to aiding people, who had been declared bankrupt, to go on to obtain mortgages. Tricia’s journey has seen her sitting on large boardroom tables through to helping small local businesses to develop and prosper. Through it all her drive has always been to help people through stressful situations and she finds it heart warming to see clients leave her office with a smile when they had arrived presuming they could not get a mortgage. Her business partner, Anne-Marie Reilly, has been her rock through the growth of Mortgages4Plymouth and is certainly one of the key people in Tricia's life who has helped the business to grow in its strength and so go on to become a real success. Tricia also understands the importance of having a good team around her with five dedicated members of staff who look after the needs of clients and their families.
“
Part of entrepreneurship is the need to be disciplined with your work and so pushing yourself with a good fitness regime ensures that discipline is part of your life
Miss Ellie Her advice to future entrepreneurs is simple: "Believe in what you are doing. Being a successful entrepreneur is all about focus, belief, commitment and hard work". And hard work is an integral part of Mortgages4Plymouth. The team had 31 mortgages approved in August alone and have had a total of more than 3000 mortgage approvals in the past ten years. It has resulted in regular client referrals and even past customers bringing in their grand children for mortgage advice. Tricia believes in constantly refreshing knowledge to keep up to speed with the changes that are happening in the industry. Her drive means that she is happy to take calls from clients in the evening and also at weekends. "With the drive then you can achieve and, if you also find the right quality of people to work together as a team, then you really can achieve anything". With her and the team working late every night of the week and taking appointments up until 7 in the evening, Tricia also believes that an important part of achieving success is to achieve that all important work life balance. For the past 15 years she has worked with a personal trainer two days a week, plus training by herself for a further two days. She says that most of the successful people she has met, during the course of her career, are people who meditated and

did regular workouts to ensure they were mentally, and physically, fit. "Part of entrepreneurship is the need to be disciplined with your work and so pushing yourself with a good fitness regime ensures that discipline is part of your life", says Tricia. It's not all hard work, though, as another aspect of her work life balance is following Formula One motor racing which sees her travel to different cities to see and experience it up close. Seeing some of the top names in motor racing as they speed past her in far flung places must have been the stuff of dreams for the eight year old who busied herself collecting that fallen fruit. “My aim today is for my clients to achieve their dream, whether that is being able to own their very first home, to move up the property ladder or build a portfolio of properties”.

What is Refurnish? Refurnish is a Devon charity that collects unwanted furniture, electrical goods and other household items that are in a good, reusable condition and sells them to onto those that appreciate the environmental benefits of reusing household goods that may otherwise go to waste, or simply want to buy at affordable prices. We offer special discounts to pensioners and people who are in receipt of means tested benefits, but you don’t have to be on benefits to buy from our shops - our shops are open to all. All electrical items are functioning and safety tested. We currently only carry out minor repairs of furniture, although we hope to do more in the future. In addition to reducing waste and helping to alleviate poverty by providing low cost goods to people on

low incomes, we provide volunteering, training and employment for people who may be unemployed or retired and may have a variety of support needs.
Donating to Refurnish We rely on the sale of donated stock to provide goods that we can sell at low prices, especially to those on low incomes. Donated items should be in clean and serviceable condition. The guiding
question to ask yourself is “Would I want to buy this in a second-hand shop?”. If you browse the store’s pages you will see examples of the items we sell. At Refurnish we have many shops within the Devon area, including our new Wrangaton branch that has nearly 8,000 square feet of space containing a wide range of household goods. If you have any unwanted items you would like to donate or have any unwanted furniture you would like us to collect, please contact us or visit our website to find the nearest branch to you. Plymouth City Airport Image: www.airportsinternational.com, 2012
Why We Need Plymouth’s Airport There has been talk for a number of years that Plymouth’s current connectivity links are poor. We sometimes feel as though we are out of reach from other cities in the UK. However the airport re-opening project, developed by Fly Plymouth, could restablish the connection that is vital for our city ... By Jess Morcom Plymouth City Airport was officially opened in July 1931 by the Prince of Wales. The airport became an essential part of West Country business and leisure, providing regular scheduled commuting services to various areas of the UK including London Gatwick, Ireland and the Channel Islands. It played an important role in ensuring that Plymouth retained its status as the regional capital for Devon and East Cornwall, helping to reduce the perception of the City’s peripheral geographic location. The airport was overall vital for Plymouth’s economy. A masterplan to extend the boundaries of the airport was published in October 2008, however all London flights to Plymouth Airport were withdrawn in early 2011 seeing a major fall in passenger numbers and high landing fees at Gatwick, which

eventually led to the airport closure in July of the same year. Airport operator Sutton Harbour Group decided that routes from the airfield were no longer profitable and there was no profit in the airport itself. The land owner, Plymouth City Council, voted to accept the closure of the airport.
FlyPlymouth is concentrating on the landing of smaller, quieter planes with quick and convenient connections to major cities and hubs, rather than large commercial aeroplanes which may not be able to land at the site.
On this day, a number of protesters arrived at the site presenting banners that criticised the airport’s closure after a call to prevent it. They were unsuccessful, so the last ever commercial flight by Air Southwest, the airport’s sole carrier, departed in July.
With support from The Conversative Party, The Labour Party, former airport staff, local MPs and Aviation experts, the fundraising project aims to raise over £150,000 over the course of two years in order to work on the goal to reopen Plymouth Airport so that Plymouth can benefit from major connectivity improvement and attract business to the South West.
However, the current site and the runway remain intact, so FlyPlymouth - a community funded project - are pushing for the airports’ reopen so the city can once again be connected by air.
All the funding received from the community project will be invested into the pre-revenue work to make the plan to reopen the airport become a reality. FlyPlymouth are only seeking a short

operating lease initially, allowing it to be re-commissioned which will make the airport profitable. Once this stage has been reached, FlyPlymouth promise to create a new base airline, travelling to destinations that have been selected based on current passenger demand modelling. These include London, Manchester, Glasgow and Exeter and the aim is for services to run twice a day. Some say that reopening the airport will have a largely negative impact on the city. Many argue that reopening the airport will have no benefits, so the land should be used for other puposes such as building residential homes. When the old Plymouth airport was up and running, in 2009, 157,933 passengers were reported to have passed through. So this is contrary to public belief that the airport was not used when it was up and running. By reintroducing links to London and other capital cities, there is no doubt potential for Plymouth’s airport to attract more business than ever before.
It is now time for Plymouth to focus on reopening its airport and connecting with the world FlyPlymouth is a locally owned company behind the campaign and it is limited by guarantee. This means that all profits generated by the business are sure to be recycled into the airport, rather than being extracted by private shareholders. Anyone can donate as much or as little as they like, with higher donations receiving a limited edition certificate of sponsorship and the opportunity to become a founder member of the FlyPlymouth plan. This will entitle you to an invitation to attend the landing ceremony of the first aeroplane at Plymouth Airport.
When we look at the current extortionate prices of train tickets and the cost of fuel to travel within the UK, it is easy to see the pros outweighing the cons if the airport were to reopen; not to mention the hours of travelling time. The quickest way to central London remains to be a journey over three hours long, and the nearest airport is in Exeter which is almost an hours’ drive. There is no doubt that investing in reopening the airport would be a fantastic idea, although it is probably better being introduced sooner rather than later. The city will reap the benefits of reopening Plymouth’s City Airport. As well as improving connectivity with the rest of the UK, it will create jobs for workers, in turn benefitting the economy. FlyPlymouth’s estimations are to have the airport up and running within 3 years time, which is fairly reasonable and certainly can happen with the support and donations of Plymouth citizens. The project also believes that the airport can profitably function on the current site, meaning that there is no need for any

adjustments to be made, utilising the land that already exists and having a minimal impact on the surrounding environment. At the beginning of May 2015, Plymouth Herald revealed that the airport plans were announced at a post-general election public meeting. During this meeting, FlyPlymouth’s chief executive Raoul Witherall stated that “It is now time for Plymouth to focus on reopening its airport and connecting with the world”. The campaign has so far been very successful as it was overfunded in a total of 56 days, by over 100% of its original target, in July 2015. This is a very promising start to achieving their goal of raising £150,000 in two years.
