Editor’s Note Christmas is just around the corner and the excitement of the festive season has spread across Plympton! The Plympton Chamber of Commerce has been busy fundraising to purchase brand new Christmas lights to brighten up the Ridgeway this year. There will be two evenings of festivities on the 1st and 8th December. The street will be closed on both nights and there will be a Christmas Fair with a range of stalls and entertainment from Jazz Bands, Acrobatics, Youth Bands, dancers, Santa and much more! For the first time ever, Boringdon Hall’s traditional Winter Wonderland will feature a real ice rink. Pull on some skates, take to the ice and get into the Christmas spirit! See page 10 for your local what’s on guide to find out more. Finally, all of us here at Plympton Magazine would like to wish our readers and advertisers a Happy Christmas and New Year! Local Issues Column by Councillor Glenn Jordan

Now that the nights are closing in and the clocks have gone back, the Winterfest season is upon us.

O

fficially Christmas starts on the 25th of December and runs for 12 days, but across Plympton many organisations started running Fairs and Charity events in November and will continue into the New Year. Hence the birth of the Winter festival, if anything, the term in my view save the sanctity of Christmas as well as allow that little bit of Christmas flexibility. This year, Plympton Chamber of Commerce have been busy planning, what they hope to be an annual event, with Christmas Fairs as well as raising money for Christmas Lights all on the Ridgeway. After a meeting earlier this year between the Plympton Councillors and the Plympton Chamber, I along with all my colleague, agreed to help with trying to raise their funding target by giving the Christmas fund

Pictured: Cllrs David Jame, Patrick Nicholson and Terri Beer handing over the cheque to the Plympton Chamber of Commerce

Pictured: Plympton Councillor Glenn Jordan

£500 each from our respective community budgets, a total of £3500, I was also asked if I would join the team, as we plan to make it bigger and better in the future years. I have to admit that the team have been amazing, as sometimes working with professional people can lead to competitive tensions, but none of that has happened and during the planning. Meeting everyone has always been very positive and high spirited, which I feel is only a credit to the Plympton Chamber. To be able to be better in future years, we need to learn from this years’ experience. To that end, the committee have started a Facebook Page dedicated to the Christmas Lights called LightupPlympton, which is also the Twitter hash tag that is being used. From this page we will continue to try and get feedback for next year, as well as hopefully share everyone’s experiences at this year’s event. As the last Column for 2014, I will finish off by wishing you all a “Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year” and I hope you all enjoy Winterfest.

Deck the Halls With these creative, simple and affordable DIY decorations, Christmas has never looked so merry and bright! By Nimra Imran.

1

Why not reinvent the Christmas wreath with personalised family photos, which will not only look great for the holiday season but is also versatile enough to be put on display throughout the year. Take some old family snapshots and simply glue them together in the shape of a wreath and hang anywhere in the house. Beautiful and simple, this will brighten up the look of any room!

2

Mason Jar lanterns spread a rustic and vintage theme across your house in preparation for Christmas. All you require are a few empty mason jars,

1

small pine cones, a few leaves from your Christmas tree, salt, string, candles and any other decorative materials you wish to add. Take your mason jar and place a fine layer of salt at the bottom and nestle the candle in the centre. Proceed to surround the candle with a few leaves that you have taken from your christmas tree. Then, loop your small pinecones through a piece of string and tie the string around the neck of your mason jar. Add leaves and other decorative material as desired or as shown in the picture. These mason jars look best placed on mantle pieces or windowsills and

2

give a warm glow to any room.

3

Add these pretty glitter leaves onto your Christmas tree, making it shimmer and glow. Cut out two leaves, or any other shape that you desire, from a template and glitter the sides that will be facing outwards. You can also give them a base coat of paint the same colour as the glitter if desired. Create a single punch hole in the leaf and thread the bead through it. Then, all that’s left to do is to string a loop of ribbon through the leaf and it is ready to be hung onto your tree.

Saving St Mary’s Church Plympton S

t Mary’s Church in Plympton is undergoing a major overhaul. The bells, which have rung out from the tower every Sunday and on other occasions for many years, will now remain silent until February or March 2015. Having raised sufficient funds for these repairs thanks to the hard work of the bell ringing team and other volunteers and the generosity of the local public, the necessary repair work has now begun. The wheels, clappers and rope guide pulleys, used to ring the bells, have been lowered to the ground and sent to the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London. Sadly, there will be no bells ringing out at Christmas this year, but hopefully they will be back in use by Easter. Plympton will not be the same in the meantime! Meanwhile, we need to explain why the church clock has been so unreliable recently. It would appear that the clock face on the south side of the church is the cause of the problem. That is why the clock keeps stopping. The clock on the south side of the tower has been stopped as an interim measure, hopefully enabling the clock on the north side of the tower, seen by people travelling up and down through Ridgeway, to operate effectively. The south clock face repair will be another major job and cannot go

“Having raised sufficient funds for these repairs thanks to the hard work of the bell ringing team and other volunteers and the generosity of the local public, the necessary repair work has now begun.”

“The event will be held in the Church Hall in Market Road, Plympton. Stalls will include books, fancy goods and handcraft, cakes, bric a brac, toys, tombola, Christmas gifts and Christmas wreaths.” ahead until the necessary funds can be found. We are pleased to report that the organ is now working really well again after its extensive renovation, funded by kind donations from our supporters and through the efforts of our enthusiastic fund raisers. All of these tasks require additional fund raising as our regular fund raising only covers regular day-to-day costs needed to keep the church itself operating properly. St Mary’s organises various events during the year in order to raise these funds. One such occasion is our annual Christmas Fair which will be taking place from 10am until 1pm on Saturday 6th December this year. The event will be held in the Church Hall in Market Road, Plympton. Stalls will include books, fancy goods and handcraft, cakes, bric a brac, toys, tombola, Christmas gifts and Christmas wreaths. There will be a Grand Raffle Draw and other interesting activities. Various refreshments, including mince pies, will be available. We look forward to seeing our many friends. Further details from Rodger Ruse, telephone 01752 510190, email rikkiplympton@aol.com.

Feel at ease visiting the dentist If you’re particularly worried about your dental treatment we can help by using dental sedation. You will remain conscious but drowsy and in a state of relaxation as your treatment takes place.

W

hilst under sedation, a number of teeth (often your whole mouth) can be treated in one session so patients feel it is convenient and cost effective as well as removing the fear of coming to visit the dentist. John Gittins has been providing this service for over 20 years and has treated hundreds of patients who otherwise would not have been able to enjoy the life-changing results of successful treatments. We are delighted to announce that fellow dentists;

Peter Reville and Joanna Sutcliffe can also offer their patients sedation if required.

Patient feedback -

“I would like to thank you for the wonderful care you gave me, as being a nervous patient you have restored my confidence in coming to visit the dentist – thank you so much”. The key is simply to come along and talk to us – we’ll find a route which will enable you to take full advantage of our advanced dentistry skills without having to dread coming to visit us! Childcare News RIDGEWAY SCHOOL P.E. TEACHER, KIRSTY GRAY’S HARD WORK & DETERMINATION PAYS OFF K

irsty has been a keen tennis player for 31 years. On Friday 24th October she headed off to London to take part in the National Finals of the Necker Club. This is a mixed doubles competition with one pair winning a ‘once in a lifetime’ trip to participate in the world’s most exclusive pro-am tennis tournament. Some of the world’s top legends will be participating to try and win this event including Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker, Kim Cljisters and Marion Bartoli, and will be hosted by Richard Branson. Throughout all the local, regional and national rounds no-one knew who they would be partnered with as this was drawn on the day. At the National finals twenty female and 20 male players competed in the morning round robin session with the top six male and female players playing in the finals in the afternoon. Kirsty won through the finals with the highest score out of all the players. The finals were much higher standard, with many players being of a semiprofessional standard. Kirsty said “I had trained hard to reach this stage but never in my wildest dreams did I think I could win

it…Yet I did! I was presented with the prize, a winning ticket to the Pro Am tournament in Necker Island to compete amongst the greats. So, after 31 years of playing tennis and more importantly training hard, I have achieved my dream of playing tennis on the World Centre Stage.” Staff and students are so proud of Kirsty’s achievements. “We all knew Kirsty was a great tennis player but this is really amazing and what a prize – a trip to the Necker Islands” commented Sue Vanstone, Marketing coordinator at Ridgeway School. Kirsty will be setting up a blog and posting regular comments and updates on her trip and more importantly the tennis and who she gets to play in the tournament. Hobby Horse Day Nursery & Preschool celebrates again... The submission is also subject to audit and is completely in line with Ofsted requirements for good and outstanding providers of childcare. Being awarded the Bristol Standard for the last 9 years is testament of the hard work, professionalism and commitment of the Hobby Horse team where quality counts. It is an accolade to the staff...Jayne, Laura, Shelley, Charlie, Lizzie, Jessica and trainee staff, and justly deserved, as they work tirelessly to ensure that each child’s needs are met and are given a wide choice of play and learning experiences. This ensures that the high quality care is maintained, and offering the best development that every child deserves, focussing on each child as an individual. This has been borne out this year by Jayne achieving a Foundation Degree in Early Years, Laura now has a Level 4 qualification, Shelley has achieved her NVQ Level 3 and one of our trainee’s Jo has achieved her NVQ Level 2 and embarking on her NVQ Level 3. Aside of ensuring that every child receives the best care, the staff still find time to organise fund raising events and in the next couple of months will be making donations to Children in Need. Should you require any further information please contact Jayne at the nursery on 01752 202193, Rachael on 07775 923246, visit our website www. hobbyhorsenurseries.co.uk or just call at the nursery where you will be made most welcome.
