Editor’s Note ... We’ve reached the end of the year, and it’s come round incredibly fast! Take a look at our What’s On Guide on page 14 to find out what’s happening over the festive holiday. This month we have a variety of features supporting local causes. Find out all about the Devon and Cornwall Refurnish Project, helping the disadvantaged in need, on page 29. Emma Wilson has kindly shared with us the incredible story of her brave mother’s battle against cancer. She is raising money for St Luke’s Hospice, who looked after Jayne Wilson, by taking part in a fundraising skydive at 15,000ft next year. Read more on page 11. The Plympton Neighbourhood Policing team are also providing monthly advice on how to stay safe and well in Plympton. This month, they are advising how to stay safe on the local roads this winter. I hope you have enjoyed all the issues of the Plympton Community Magazine over the year, packed full - as always of unmissable features and offers. See you next year!

Fundraising for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth

E

mma Wilson of Plymouth’s mother, Jayne Wilson, sadly passed away earlier this year. Emma is raising money for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth who cared for Jayne until the end. On May 1st 2015, Emma and her family received the terrible news that Jayne’s breast cancer had spread to her lungs and had become terminal. The family were heartbroken when Jayne lost her battle to cancer on the 29th of August 2015 at 10.30am. For 5 days, St Luke’s Hospice let them stay at her bedside whilst caring for them, providing food and accommodation. Jayne greatly loved St Luke’s Hospice for the specialist end of life care they have offered the local community for over 30 years. The charity granted her final wish to pass away there in comfort.

“A great cause in memory of a courageous lady” After Emma had completed the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research back in August, her mother suggested taking part in a skydive to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice to give back what they have given heartbroken families struggling through this difficult time. She will take part in the skydive, at 15,000ft, on the 11th of June 2016 in memory of beautiful Jayne. So far she has raised £300 of her £500 target, raising money for St Luke’s Hospice.

Jayne wrote journals for her family to read after she had passed away According to Macmillan, there are now a shocking 2.5 million people living with cancer in the UK. Organisations such as St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth offer dignity and choice to their patients in their final days. In order to continue their vital work they must raise over £4 million each and every year from the local community. Every donation, no matter how small or large, will help someone, like Emma’s brave mother, get the quality care and support they deserve. Emma is fundraising via her JustGiving page, where all money will go directly to the charity. Visit her page at www.justgiving.com/Emma-Wilson67. Plympton Winter Road Safety The Plympton Neighbourhood Policing team offer their advice on how to stay safe on the local roads this winter.

With the winter almost upon us, and the nights closing in, we all need to think about how we travel.

Before you set off please check that your vehicle is suitable for the conditions. If they are particularly hazardous, and the journey is essential, you may want to consider packing additional warm clothing and blankets, just in case you break-down. Basic checks to your vehicle should include the depth and width of tread on your tyres, checking that they are properly inflated. You should also ensure all lights are clean, properly adjusted and in good working order. You must use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced. You may also use front or rear fog lights but these must be switched off when visibility improves as they will dazzle other road users and also obscure your own brake lights. When the road is wet, it can take up to twice as long to stop so it makes sense to slow down when it’s raining. If your vehicle loses its grip, or “aquaplanes”, on surface water take your foot off the accelerator to slow down. Don’t brake or steer suddenly because you

18

have no control of the steering or brakes. When driving in ice and snow do not reduce tyre pressures to get more grip – it doesn't work, and reduces stability. In icy conditions stopping distances can be up to 10 times longer. We see a lot of collisions that are caused by people not braking in time when the roads are wet or slippery. If it’s foggy, raining, snowing or icy, make sure you slow down and keep well back from the vehicle in front of you. Through the winter months dazzle from the low sun can be a particular problem. Make sure that the windscreen is clean – inside and out. Scratches, abrasion and chips on the outside can also worsen the dazzling effect of the sun. Use air conditioning for faster de-misting and to reduce condensation on cold windows. Please do not drive until you have good visibility. Devon & Cornwall Furniture Re-Use Project The community based project helps the disadvantaged in need by supplying good quality second hand furniture at affordable prices. Working in partnership with an extensive list of organisations whom also support people that face disadvantage and hardship - organisations including the Royal British Legion, The Women’s Refuge and Social Services - the project works hard daily to fulfil their aim of making good quality furniture available to everybody. Over the past 4 years, the project has given away a huge £30,000 worth of furniture, free of charge, to people who face disadvantage or who are on low incomes. This has been achieved via the referral system they use with their partnerships. The successes are directly linked to the hard work of the 14 employees combined with the generosity of the public who have decided to donate their unwanted furniture to the shop on Union Street. The store supplies a large selection of vaired household stock including second hand sofas, washing machines, refrigerators and freezers and various pine furniture. Stock changes daily so they are urging local folk to come in and browse the friendly store. DCFRP are currently offering a starter pack deal for those facing hardships. For only £450 it includes a cooker, a washing machine, a fridge freezer, a sofa and a bed. The Furniture Re-Use Project will collect unwanted furniture as long as it can be reused and complies with the right regulations. All

washing machines, cookers, fridges, freezers and tumblr dryers available to purchase come with a 6-month guarantee. All new and second hand sofas comply with the furniture and furnishing fire safety regulations. The Furniture Re-Use Project will collect your unwanted furniture free of charge, saving a good product go to waste in the landfill site.

For people, not for profit

The team’s work is largely praised by local charities and people in need. The Southernway Children’s Centre expressed their sincere gratitude for the help the team gave them in allowing Southernway to support a very needy family. The Plymouth Women’s Refuge also thanked the staff for providing a cot, cutlery, pots and pans for when the women move on. If you would like to donate furniture, call the store on 01752 600277 to arrange a free collection, or to browse and buy visit the store between 8-5 pm during the week and 9-3pm on Saturdays, at 97 Union Street, Stonehouse, Plymouth, PL1 3NB.

R

efurnish takes great pride in the work that they do. Their principle aims are to help people on low incomes by providing low cost reusable furniture at discounted prices and reducing the waste in your local community.

What is Refurnish? Refurnish is a Devon charity that collects unwanted furniture, electrical goods and other household items that are in a good, reusable condition and sells them to onto those that appreciate the environmental benefits of reusing household goods that may otherwise go to waste, or simply want to buy at affordable prices. All electrical items are functioning and safety tested. We currently only carry out minor repairs of furniture, although we hope to do more in the future. In addition to reducing waste and helping to alleviate poverty by providing low cost goods to people on low incomes, we provide volunteering, training and employment for people who may be unemployed or retired and may have a variety of support needs.

Buying Affordable Furniture & Appliances Our shops are open to all. We sell furniture, appliances and other household goods at affordable

prices and give a generous discount of 20% to pensioners or anyone in receipt of welfare benefits. We have a wide range of quality used goods and at Christmas we have many customers seeking additional tables or beds to accommodate guests over the period. To help meet this demand, we are now stocking a range of affordable new single and double beds. If you are seeking a particular item you are welcome to either call or visit our shops. At Refurnish we have many shops within the Devon area, including our new Wrangaton branch that has nearly 8,000 square feet of space containing a wide range of household goods. If you have any unwanted items you would like to donate or have any unwanted furniture you would like us to collect, please contact us or visit our website to find the nearest branch to you. For all enquiries, please call David Banks on 01364 73206, email davidbanks@refurnish.org.uk, or visit our website www.refurnish.org.uk
