It’s common knowledge that new year’s resolutions have a very short life span, no matter how hard we try to implement them. This year plan out your resolutions with these useful tips, and your goals will become much more achievable. Instead of heading for drastic changes, making over certain aspects of your life ensures that your resolutions have a healthy life span! By Nimra Imran. Saving Money It’s time to crack out the piggy bank and make plans to save money for this new year. For example a simple tip is to add up any unexpected or extra income. Upon receiving a bonus, gift or cash for extra work, use the rule of thirds to determine how to use it. Put one third away for the future and put the second third away immediately into some sort of investments or savings. Finally, stash one third for the present to make a home or personal improvement purchase. By following this rule you will see your debt shrink and your savings grow!

Weight Loss Long term healthy eating is a much better and sustainable method of losing weight as opposed to yo-yo dieting. Not only will you see more improvements in your weight loss plan but also healthier eating has numerous

“It’s time to crack out the piggy bank and make plans to save money for this new year.” other physical and psychological benefits. For example, eating breakfast everyday can help weightloss. If you’re skipping it, then it’s time to stop and add this to your list of new year’s resolutions. Studies have shown that by skipping breakfast every day, you may be setting yourself up for a major binge later. Instead, opt for a meal high in fibre, for example, cereal and fruit, so you’ll stay fuller longer.

Volunteering If you’re an animal lover, try volunteering at your local animal shelter. Not only will you be giving something back to the community but it has been proven that interacting with animals is psychologically excellent. Or try volunteering at a charity shop or a nearby care home. No matter what you choose to do, getting involved within the community is an excellent way to give back and get active.

Local Issues Column by Councillor Glenn Jordan

Now that we have got the excesses of New Year and Christmas out of the way.

A

s well as the temptation of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and also the realisation that I still can’t afford what I want in the January Sales, I can get back to focussing on the Year ahead and the many projects that are going on across Plympton The two most important issue I will be young people. Firstly with the council changing the way Youth Services are delivered across the city, I am working through the Chaddlewood Farm Community Association to started a Plympton Youth Project, which is based at the Community Centre and will help to support the work of the Rees Centre at the same time, maintaining a level of outreach, so supporting our young people as well as helping to target Anti-social

The Ridgeway ‘Christmas Lights Turn on’ December 2014

Pictured: Plympton Councillor Glenn Jordan

Behaviour. The team at the Youth Project are already looking to try and support local sports teams and clubs, and are in the process of organising a Junior Football Tournament. The other is as part of the Council Scrutiny Panel, Chaired by my Plympton colleague Cllr Terri Beer, which will be taking an in-depth look at how the City deals with Child Sexual Exploitation, which is an issue that no agency that is involved with the welfare of Young People can take lightly, especially in the wake of the resent events in Rotherham and other scandals that came to light last year. I will also be continuing to tackle the ongoing issues around Green Field site up for sale for housing development, the impact on our Schools, Doctors Surgeries as well as our roads and other infrastructure problems that these and the planned new town of Sherford will cause. Finally with this being an election year, which could not only see a new Government but also a change in Leadership of the Local council, it will defiantly be a very busy and interesting year.

The distribution of Plympton Community Magazine has never been beaten by any other local competitor! We have a dedicated marketing distribution company who deliver The Plympton Community Magazine through Plympton household letter box’s. The business was started by two companies who found it difficult to find reliable and economical distributors in the Plymouth and surrounding areas. Our distributors are respectful of occupants wishes at all times and they will never deliver material where the householder/business owner has requested us not to, we always ensure that all material is delivered into the letterbox and pushed through for security purposes. Our distributers use Full GPS tracking systems through mobile phones, this is a very unique system which enables us to view every step on every path, through every street, on every road and down every lane! This form of guaranteed tracking can also tell us how many distributers are working and how fast they are walking, this is then followed by spot checking to ensure they carry out the work as required to meet our very high standards. The Plympton Community Magazine is the original magazine which has been providing local information and great discounts to the people of Plympton for over 3 years. For the past 12 months we have chosen to use this new age form of distribution to ensure Plympton Magazine is delivered on time, every time, with a guaranteed tracked distribution!

Feel at ease visiting the dentist If you’re particularly worried about your dental treatment we can help by using dental sedation. You will remain conscious but drowsy and in a state of relaxation as your treatment takes place.

hilst under sedation, a number of teeth (often your whole mouth) can be treated in one session so patients feel it is convenient and cost effective as well as removing the fear of coming to visit the dentist. John Gittins has been providing this service for over 20 years and has treated hundreds of patients who otherwise would not have been able to enjoy the life-changing results of successful treatments. We are delighted to announce that fellow dentists;

Peter Reville and Joanna Sutcliffe can also offer their patients sedation if required.

Parsnip and Chestnut Soup Ingredients

• 100g/3½oz unsalted butter • 600g/1lb 5oz parsnips, chopped • 1 small leek, trimmed and chopped • 150ml/5fl oz white wine • 200g/7oz cooked chestnuts (sold vacuum-packed) • 1.5 litre/2 pints vegetable stock (preferably homemade) • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 8 scallops

Method

1. Melt half of the butter in a large heavy-based saucepan over a gentle heat but do not allow it to colour. 2. Add the parsnips and leek and let them fry gently for about 4-5 minutes, or until the parsnip is soft. Add the white wine and chestnuts (reserving a few for garnish) and fry gently for a further 7-8 minutes. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. 3. Add the stock to the saucepan and bring to the boil, then simmer for 5-6 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and blend with an immersion blender or in a food-processor until it’s nice and smooth. (If you’re using a food processor, allowbbcgoodfood.com the soup to cool a little before you recipe from blend it.) Pass the soup through a fine sieve and set aside. 4. Heat a large frying pan and add the butter. Once melted, add the scallops and cook on each side for 1-2 minutes. 5. Divide the seared scallops among four shallow serving bowls and ladle the soup around. Grate the reserved chestnuts on top.

Achieve your New Year goals by letting go of the past Whether it’s managing your weight, keeping fit, maintaining a tidy house, gaining a qualification or improving your work/life balance, hypnotherapy can help you achieve your New Year’s resolution goal. The optimism and revitalisation that most of us experience at the start of the year often fade when day to day worries and pressures begin to cloud our focus and weaken our resolve. Ruminating about the past is one of the biggest obstacles to success, People often find it difficult to develop the new habits required to achieve their goal because they subconsciously repeat old behaviours, whether those behaviours relate to food, relationships, exercise, studying or household finances. The negative effects of ruminating were highlighted in a BBC Stress Experiment carried out in June 2011. Preliminary results from the study of over 30,000 participants indicate very clearly that ‘a tendency to blame yourself for problems and, most importantly, a tendency to ruminate and worry are the most important factors when it comes to predicting your chances of

suffering from stress.’ It’s the therapist’s job to help clients let go of those unhelpful thinking patterns, encouraging them to express themselves positively, and helping them to maintain motivation to achieve their goal. As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist I employ techniques designed to help clients visualise their ‘preferred future’. By asking specially formulated questions, I help people to describe how their future will be when they have achieved their goal. I encourage them to provide as much detail as possible so that they can create a vivid mental image. Crucially the therapy works without the need of looking back at past events (which can sometimes be upsetting). This visualisation exercise is followed by a session of hypnosis, a relaxed state in which the mind is more receptive to ideas and suggestions. Neuroscience demonstrates that when we imagine doing something, similar changes take place in the brain as if we are actually doing it. So we can accelerate the formation of new habits by simply thinking about the way we want to be. The deeply relaxed state achieved during hypnosis helps the mind to absorb the positive mental image.

If you feel you need help to maintain motivation for following through on your New Year’s resolutions, contact Tim Pilling on 07710159289 to book a free consultation or visit tp-hypnotherapy.co.uk.

The Hard Truth! Why recycling over landfill or mass incineration? There is a lot of debate over recycling and why it’s so important yet easy to ignore or brush under the carpet.

products however on a first pass through the plant with the addition of a further laser optic unit we can achieve 72% recovery from waste that was previously going to landfill.

As a leading economy on this planet the UK has to set the standard at every opportunity it can to make real changes in carbon reduction and recycling plays a much bigger role in that than is realised. As a consumer society the demand for packaging grows each year and using recycled plastics, metals and paper compared to virgin products cannot be ignored.

7% is rigid plastic.

Our recovery figures By 22nd of December this year our recovery rate from general waste will be at least 72%. We have been achieving 68% by re-running certain

Refuse derived fuel This material is used widely now in place of fossil fuels as it has great calorific value and is much cleaner than coal.

28% is refused derived fuel. What this means For every 100 tonnes we process here in Exeter the following energy is saved in comparison to using virgin materials. Currently we process up to 500 tonnes a week. Paper, 184500 kwh of power , 405 barrels of oil, 315000 gallons of water, 1224.45 kgs of air pollutants from being released into the air we breathe , 2430 million BTU’S of energy and 148 cubic yards of landfill space.

The totals Just taking oil alone the recycling we recover here every week in our plant in Exeter saves an astounding 3990 barrels of oil. We also save 1.43 million gallons of water a week and 1.6 million KWH of electricity.

We do all this!!!!!
