Friends and Families Of Special Children Friends & Families of Special Children was initially set up in 2002 as a support group by parents of disabled children. Since then the organisation has grown and developed significantly; now supporting over 650 families. Friends and Families of Special Children is a unique organisation as they provide services and support for each member of the family, individually or as a whole unit. They provide social, leisure, and information and education activities for every member of each of the families, ensuring that all of the children have the best quality of life possible and enable them to experience as many opportunities to have fun as they can. No children are excluded from the provision offered as everything is adapted in order that it can be accessed by all. Support also extends to the Young Carers within the family. These are a particularly disadvantaged group of young people for whom services within the city are few and far between. The Fun and Freedom Club enables Young Carers to have some special time for themselves and be children/young people rather than carers. Many of these Young Carers suffer low self-esteem and lower academic grades. Due to their personal situations they experience social isolation and miss out on many childhood/teenage experiences. Regular activities are run for special needs children, their siblings and carers, a facility that is not widely available in Plymouth but one that families with able
bodied children take for granted. Many families with special needs children feel intense isolation on holidays and because of the lack of respite offered to most families, they find these times extremely tiring and can feel quite desperate. These sessions offer access to a support network on a weekly basis throughout the holidays and hopefully ensure that families do not reach crisis point. These sessions may be the only time in the week that carers can drink a cup of coffee in a relatively relaxed manner without having to watch and care for their child. These sessions have been described as ‘a life saver’, ‘the one thing that stopped me from having a nervous breakdown’ and ‘the place I do not need to keep apologising for my son’s behaviour’. For Parents there is both practical and emotional support available. Parents can access the Face 2 Face peer befriending scheme, which links Parents facing similar difficulties with a volunteer Parent. A Parent Advocate is available; supporting Parents to navigate their way through statutory agencies and various processes, as well as signposting to organisations that can support families financially with grants and much needed equipment. To find out more about the organisation and how they can support you and your family, please visit the website www.friendsandfamilies.org.uk or give the team a call on 01752 204369. Also find them on Facebook - Friends and Families of Special Children or Twitter @FAFplymouth.

Alexandra Boardman
Chartered Legal Executive
hristmas - a time for fun, C excitement, and, oh, family conflict? By Alexandra Boardman
Alexandra Boardman from The Family Law Company in Plymouth considers the best way to tackle Christmas for separated parents. Perhaps I should apologise for raising the issue of Christmas when we haven’t finished with all the other festivities of the year yet. However, as Christmas cards have been on the shelves for weeks now, this seems like an opportune time to raise an issue that, like so many around Christmas time, can prove to be a real sticking point. Some of the ‘Ps’ associated with Christmas Presents: we all like that one. Parties: for some, they are the best thing about Christmas, for others not so much fun (although we might enjoy it in the end). Another ‘P’, and one we reluctantly accept as a requirement of the festive period, is Planning. When we are making our arrangements for Christmas, there is always a long list of what needs to be dealt with. Turkey ‒ tick. Decorate the tree ‒ tick. Buy the gifts and wrap them – tick. However, as you get organised, spare a thought for family lawyers and mediators for whom Christmas can be one of the busiest times of the year. This is often because of child contact disputes, a very difficult issue for families at Christmas. It is widely accepted that Christmas is really all about the children and spending time with family. The tree, presents and Christmas dinner are secondary to watching the joy and excitement on the children’s faces when they open their presents. Even letting them overindulge in chocolate is all part of the fun of Christmas morning. However, with many parents now living in different households it has become more and more difficult for both parents to share these wonderful moments with their children. Understandably, both parents want to have their children wake up with them on Christmas morning and experience the thrill and excitement of those first few hours. Although some parents will find it difficult to put aside their differences, this isn’t true in all cases. Many separated parents reach agreements that might involve one parent going to the other parent’s home in the early hours so that they can both share in the excitement with their children. It’s worth bearing in mind that for some children, this could be very difficult or confusing.
There really isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ arrangement that can be put in place for every family over the festive period when the parents do not live together. Relationships between separated parents are unique, down to individual circumstances and even personalities. What is usually common, however, is the desire to put the child or children at the centre of the arrangements and try to ensure that Christmas is a fun and enjoyable time for all. The best way forward is to discuss the likely arrangements early, so both parents know where they stand. By ensuring that neither parent will be disappointed, much of the stresses and strains of making arrangements for children to spend time with their parents is removed. Having an open conversation about arrangements can highlight areas that may need the additional guidance of a family lawyer or mediator. Where a mutual agreement cannot be reached, knowing the areas of disagreement early on will provide plenty of time for the court to consider the proposals of each parent before giving guidance or, making a decision should no agreement be reached. In reality, the court would much prefer parents to sort things out between themselves and by agreement, rather than be forced into an arrangement. Children find it difficult to deal with conflict in the same way that adults do, whatever time of year it is. Most children would ideally like to spend time with both parents, not least with the expectation that Father Christmas is likely to visit two homes to deliver presents to them. Where things can become difficult and upsetting is when a child wakes up with one parent to the excitement of Christmas Day, but then feels responsible for or even guilty about their other parent being sad or upset because they haven’t seen them. This can bring on an untimely reminder that mummy and daddy are still not getting on. By talking to an experienced family lawyer in good time, these problems can often be resolved well before the festive season. With arrangements agreed and in place, everyone can relax and enjoy a peaceful, happy Christmas. Protect Your Home and Other Properties from Fraud Your property is probably the most valuable asset you own. That’s why it is important to do whatever you can to protect it from the risk of fraud. It is much better to prevent crime whenever possible than have the upset and inconvenience of picking up the pieces once the crime has been committed. Property fraud is where fraudsters try to “steal” your property, most commonly by pretending to be you and selling or mortgaging your property without your knowledge. Since 2009, Land Registry has been successful in stopping fraud on properties totalling more than £80 million. There is an increased risk of fraud when: ▪ a property is empty ▪ a property is rented out or mortgage-free ▪ when owners are absent, such as if an owner is abroad or in a care home ▪ having relationship issues What You Can Do Sign up to Land Registry’s FREE Property Alert service to help protect your property from fraud. This service has been created to help owners detect property fraud. If you are an innocent victim of fraud and suffer financial loss, you can be compensated. Property Alert is a free monitoring service aimed at anyone who feels a property could be at risk from fraud. You can monitor up to 10 registered properties in England and Wales. The alert will contain details of who is undertaking the activity so that you can check whether it is activity you are expecting, this
could be by your bank or solicitor if you are extending a lease or remortgaging a property. Having signed up, Land Registry will send you an email alert each time there is significant activity that may result in a change to the register of a property that is being monitored, for example, this could be when a new mortgage is taken out against the property. You can sign up to Property Alert by going to www.gov.uk/property-alert. For more information contact the property alert team at propertyalert@landregistry.gsi.gov.uk Tel. 0300 006 0478 If you think you have already been the victim of property fraud you should: ▪ Contact a solicitor or a Citizens Advice Bureau and Action Fraud ▪ Get professional advice if you are not sure what to do ▪ Contact the Land Registry property fraud line on 0300 006 7030 (Monday to Friday 8.30 to 5pm. The Voyage of the Pilgrims November the 11th marks the 395th anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrim Fathers at Cape Cod, in the North East of the United States, after a gruelling 66 days at sea upon the Mayflower ship which had departed from Plymouth in 1620.
T
he Mayflower has strong ties with the Plymouth Barbican as on September 6th 1620, the ship departed close to the Mayflower steps landmark. The Mayflower brought the group of English settlers, now known as the Pilgrims, to what is known today as Plymouth, Massachusetts in North America. It is known that the Puritan Pilgrims left for America in search for freedom to practise their religion in the hope of a better life, without fear of persecution from the government; anyone who had objected the beliefs of the church could be arrested. 102 passengers travelled 3,000 miles on the ship, a typical English merchant ship of the early 17th century. The ship measured approximately 34 metres long and 7 metres wide; meaning the passengers had to survive in an extremely confined and crowded living space. Upon the voyage, beer was the main beverage for everybody including children. Lemon juice was also taken to help prevent scurvy. Illness and tragedy plagued the treacherous journey. The exhausted passengers encountered vicious storms that led the ship miles off course, as they had intended to land at Virginia. Almost half the passengers passed away in the cold and unfamiliar winter of New England. 18 husbands decided they should bring their wives with them on the journey. 3 of these women were heavily pregnant on board, and all survived the journey. One baby, named Oceanus Hopkins, was the only child born on the voyage, and another was born as the ship lay at anchor. It was not until the ship landed that 78% of women would unfortunately pass away in the first bitter winter. The Wampanoag were one nation of Native People who lived in North America long before the
30
English had arrived. Upon reaching the Plymouth Rock, an important symbol in American history, 41 male English colonists upon the ship signed the Mayflower Compact – the first governing document of Plymouth Colony, considered as the foundation of the U.S. Constitution. The settlers began the building of the first house in the New World on December the 25th. The Pilgrims assigned each family a house-plot; they were therein responsible for building their own housing. Families were also assigned a plot for farming and growing crops, and raising livestock. In 1621, the Plymouth settlers celebrated a successful growing season at the Plymouth Plantation. This, alongside the Wampanoag Indians interaction with the Pilgrims, traces the origins of the Thanksgiving holiday. Master Jones and the Mayflower departed back to England in this year, but not one of the Pilgrims joined him as they decided to stay put in their New Plymouth community. Today, you can see Plymouth, Massachussetts as it was in the 17th century in the famous museum at the original location of the Plymouth Plantation. It tells the iconic story of the Plymouth Colony, boasting replicas of the Mayflower ship and the English Village. At the Pilgrim Hall Museum, visitors are also allowed to touch a portion of the Plymouth Rock on display. The Mayflower Steps at Pilgrims Point on the Barbican commemorate the journey of the brave Pilgrims who were to form the most celebrated American story of courage, survival and community.

Remembrance Day in Plymouth Remembrance Day, otherwise known as Armistice Day, marks the day the First World War ended in 1918, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month. On the nearest Sunday to the 11th of November, the annual Memorial Day commemorates and honours those who sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.
S
ervices are held all over the country in which a two-minute silence is held precisely at 11am, before the laying of the wreaths. The ceremony has been televised every year by the BBC since 1946, and is the longest running live televised event. The national ceremony is held in London at the Cenotaph where the Queen will lay the first wreath, followed by the Duke of Edinburgh. In Plymouth, thousands will gather, as one, on Sunday November 8th on the Hoe. The prominent Plymouth Naval Memorial is a familiar sight for residents of our city, commemorating the loss of 7,251 sailors of the First World War and 15,933 of the Second World War. Remembrance is a large part of modern British life, culture and heritage and the poppy, species name papaver rhoeas, is the symbol of Remembrance and hope. The poppy was adopted as a symbol after Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies to write the famous poem titled In Flanders Fields. The poppies grew in their thousands; a symbol
of colour and life amongst a landscape that had been destroyed and devastated by war. The origin of the red Flanders poppy as a symbol of Remembrance was the inspiration of one American woman, Miss Moina Michael, who vowed to always wear a red poppy as an emblem of keeping the faith with all those who fell in the war. The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal has run annually since 1921, asking everyone to support the appeal this year by wearing a poppy from the 31st of October - Saturday 13th November 2015. The money raised provides financial, social and emotional care to members and the families of members who currently serve, or have previously served, in the British Armed Forces. Last year, the legion fundraised over £53,500 with the help of the people of Plymouth. They presented their gazebo and vintage military vehicles in the city centre, plus placed stands outside supporting shops including Sainsburys and WHSmiths. The poppy appeal for Devon County currently stands at an astonishing £1,003,000. Membership with the Plymouth City Centre branch will give you the opportunity to get involved and help both locally, regionally and nationally.

New Website to Help Local Employers Fill Their Apprenticeship Vacancies “Working with the Skills Group team, we invested a lot of time in developing a complex search functionality behind the scenes to ensure that the consumer-facing site was clean, simple and, most importantly, easy to use to ensure that prospective apprentices could find their ideal apprenticeship.”
Skills Group Child Care students, Holly Bennett, Courtney Spencer and Nickalya Lyle, using the new A4M website.
Skills Group has worked with local company, Altitude, to launch a new website promoting apprenticeship vacancies to young people. The new dedicated recruitment website, www.apprenticeships4me.com, has been designed to help young people make an informed choice about becoming an apprentice, and then finding a vacancy to match their career aspirations. “The launch of our new website is particularly timely,” said Skills Group Apprenticeship Manager, Mandy Kerslake, “as the increase in the national minimum wage for apprentices to £3.30 per hour has heightened interest in apprenticeship opportunities. This dedicated recruitment website has been designed to showcase the top local employers that Skills Group works with, and to promote the vacancies they have, while also helping a young person to make the decision to start an apprenticeship. “All our research shows that it is the employers that attract potential recruits, and our new apprenticeships4me website really highlights the many companies that Skills Group works with.” Altitude Managing Director, Miles Noble, said “The brief from Skills Group was a fantastic challenge – to develop a website that promotes the various employers the company works with but is appealing to young people making a life-changing decision about what to do with their future, and giving them numerous ways of searching through the many opportunities open to them. 38
Skills Group Marketing Manager, Fay Steer, said: “Developing a new website is a big investment for any organisation, both in terms of the actual cost but also the time involved in pulling together the brief, consulting with colleagues at every step of the way, creating all the new content – text and imagery – and testing the features and navigation with the target audience. “The brief was to develop a more interactive website to help us fill our employer vacancies. The site needed to convince young people and their parents of the benefits of undertaking an apprenticeship, highlighting the many successful young people who have already chosen this route. Nickayla Lyle, a child care student with Skills Group, said: “I was showing a friend the new apprenticeships4me website while I looked for a job with a local nursery. It is so much easier to use – I can search by type of vacancy and the location, and then all the information I need is there to help me decide whether to apply or not.” Altitude is an award-winning, Plymouth-based digital design agency who specialise in website design and development and is part of the Knowledge Collective. Based at the Royal William Yard, the Knowledge Collective is a talented group of like-minded designers and marketers who are all specialists in their chosen field of work. By combining their shared vision, skills, knowledge and experience with that of the client, they consistently develop and deliver creative solutions that add value to clients’ businesses. Skills Group is a locally-based independent training provider with centres in Plymouth, Newton Abbot and Exeter. The company works with employers across the region to offer apprenticeships in Business Administration, Care and Early Years, Construction, Engineering and Automotive, Hairdressing, and Sport and Leisure, and Teaching and Education, and currently has nearly 200 vacancies.
