Editor’s Note As most of you are well aware, we had some unwelcome visitors on Glen Road Field recently, which caused local residents to join forces to try and protect their land. We spoke to a man who took matters into his own hands, bringing the people of Plympton together (see page 22). Local Councillor Glenn Jordan will now be writing a regular column to keep you all informed about the main issues effecting the community. This issue, he touches on Glen Road Fields being sold for housing and waiting times for GP appointments, among other important matters (page 7). We are holding a Photography Competition for your chance to show off your Photography skills. The winner’s photograph will appear on the front cover! All you need to do to is take a photograph of an area in Plympton that you think would make a great front cover. Turn to page 14 to enter. As always, you are in control of what you would like to see in your community magazine! If you have any local news or events, please email press releases to lucy@oracle.uk.net. I hope you enjoy this issue, I’ll catch Lucy McGowan Editor/Head Graphic Designer up with you next month.

Local Issues Column by Councillor Glenn Jordan
As one of your Councillors I have been asked to write this, what I hope will be a regular, column to try and keep people informed on the work councillors are doing as well as my views on the main issues effecting Plympton. hat a week to start my first column, as many of the residents of the Chaddlewood district of Plympton will know we have had some unwelcome visitors on Glen Road Fields. My Phone, E-mail and Facebook pages have been red hot with people wanting to know why they were allowed to move from one illegal site in the city to another in the first place, why it can take up to three weeks to move them on and why as Council Tax Payers we have to foot the bill to clean up the mess afterwards. But for my first column I feel the bigger issues is that the council want to sell every bit of green space for housing, including part of Glen Road Field. As a city, yes we need more homes as the city’s population expands, but we also need green space for sports clubs to use, people to enjoy and children to play. The thing that makes Plympton so special is the green spaces, the fact that you don’t have to jump in

a car to find somewhere to walk the dog or go for a picnic with the children. Any new homes will add to the issue that already exist and are failing to be addressed, such as for the last two years we haven’t had enough places for children starting school for the first time, so four and five year olds are having to cross the city away from their friends to go to school. Another issue people raise with me is waiting times to get an appointment with their GP, regularly I am being advised residents have to wait up to 3 weeks to see their GP, when the national average is only a week. On top of that is the impact from Sherford new town as the new residents will need to send their children somewhere for school and to sign up for a Doctors Surgery before theirs is built. In my view this is short sightedness by the decision makers in Plymouth City Council as they feel it is easier to sell off a field than to bring an old building or brown field site into use. The fact that they haven’t even addressed these real everyday concerns, makes me feel that the motive for this is purely financial, with no concern of the wishes and impact on the local community.

Plymouths local animal charity needs your help! Gables Farm Cats’ and Dogs’ Home has been helping the region’s dogs and cats since 1907. We look after some 1000 cats and dogs every year. We either rehome or re-unite them with their owners and provide constant veterinary care and attention to all of them during their stay with us. We enforce a strict non-euthanasia policy, which means no healthy animal in our care is put to sleep unless they are seriously ill and suffering or too dangerous to rehome. Some dogs and cats stay with us for a long time but we never give up hope of finding them a new loving home no matter how much it costs! We rehome animals all over Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We receive no Government funding so totally rely on the generosity and support of the public through donations and legacies.

Always Buy Free Range... Next time you go to buy eggs, please consider buying free range. Battery hens have a terrible, albeit short life, deprived of anything resembling normal. Not for the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust’s small flock of chickens though, which enjoy roaming their extensive sanctuary grounds at Elfordleigh, says Woodside Manager Helen Lecointe: “Whenever any of our chickens go to the big coop in the sky, we replace them from British Hen Welfare. As you can see from our photo, they leave battery factories almost bald and in awful physical health. We can only imagine what they think when they get to see our grass, hedges and other chickens in full plumage. It always amazes us how quickly they recover though, and know what to do outdoors.” Woodside recommends that anyone

Own a piece of the Making Waves trail Plymouth’s very own sculpture trail, Making Waves will bid farewell to the city in September, but members of the public have the chance to own a piece of it as the sunfish statues will be sold at auction.
T
aking place at the National Marine Aquarium on 18th September, the auction will be compered by BBC Radio Devon presenter David Fitzgerald, and aims to raise £25,000, which will be used to support marine conservation programmes. 14 of the sunfish statues that have been placed at key sites around the city since March will go under the hammer, while the 15th statue sponsored by the National Marine Aquarium, ‘Beneath the Surface’ will be included in a raffle. Tickets to attend the Making Waves auction are available now for £25, which includes entry into the Sunfish statues raffle. Enquiries to attend should be sent to makingwaves@national-aquarium.co.uk. All funds raised from the Making Waves auction will be used to support marine conservation programmes, including the Ocean Sunfish project being led by the National Marine Aquarium. Sunfish are susceptible to commercial fishing, plastic pollution and global warming; however it is currently unknown to what extent. The funds will allow the Aquarium to investigate changes to the world’s oceans and the consequential effects this will have on marine life. The Making Waves trail features a series of sunfish statues, designed by Plymouth City Council Apprentices and tells the story of the city through a network of trails. Each statue features individual artwork created 12
by the Making Waves Artists, who were selected by the statue sponsors, which include Brittany Ferries, Plymouth University, National Apprenticeship Service and Theatre Royal Plymouth. Dr. David Gibson, Managing Director at the National Marine Aquarium who spearheaded the Making Waves project, commented: “We’re delighted to be hosting the Making Waves auction at the National Marine Aquarium and offer the public the chance to come along and own a piece of the trail. The sunfish statues have been a welcome addition to the city over the last few months – although we’ll be sad to see them go, we’re thrilled the funds raised will be used to support marine conservation projects, including the Aquarium’s very own Ocean Sunfish project. “We are very grateful to the businesses, designers and teams of apprentices who have helped make this project such a success – and the local residents and visitors to Plymouth who have enjoyed the trail over the last few months. We hope the people of Plymouth will get involved in the auction and help us to achieve our continued ambition of driving marine conservation through engagement.” If you would like to have your local news published, please send press releases to lucy@oracle.uk.net

New talent is on its way! With Plymouth University Summer is almost over, and with September approaching Plymouth University are eager to welcome our new arrivals for 2014!
T
he Student Jobs team have already begun preparations for the many events that will occur this September, beginning with Arrivals Weekend. In 2013 we recruited approximately 400 Student Ambassadors for these September events. During Arrivals Weekend we had Student Ambassadors stationed at each of the Halls of Residence to welcome our new students, and to assist the families with moving in their belongings. We were very proud to provide the students responsible for ensuring that our new arrivals settled into their new home as smoothly as possible. And we are looking forward to having this privilege again for September 2014. Welcome Week then follows this, where many events and activities are organised for the new arrivals, such as the Welcome parties for the different faculties. Within this Week again our Student Jobs team are responsible in the recruitment of the Student Ambassadors that help with the preparation of these events, help encourage new students to participate and to help supervise these activities. Additionally, the Graduation ceremonies will take place in September, in which our team will be responsible for recruiting students to work as the hospitality staff. Therefore, our new arrivals and returning students will have a variety of work opportunities that they can get involved with! In addition to these opportunities, our students are keen to get in contact with local employers. We encourage external employers in Plymouth to contact our Student Jobs team, as when the students return in September many will be eager to secure a part-time job! With one of the largest talent pools in the South West we can help provide you with gifted, enthusiastic and
hard - working candidates for your vacancies. We aim to be that crucial link between our students and local employers. As from day one at Plymouth University we have a strong focus on employability, and will offer excellent support to students eager to build their CV’s and improve upon their future employability. Student Jobs will gladly manage the entire recruitment process for you. Over the years Student Jobs has developed strong long term relationships with clients, and will always ensure that your business is fully understood before entering the recruitment process. Once we have all the necessary information we will advertise your part- time vacancy using our dedicated vacancy website. Additionally, we will circulate all opportunities through our Twitter feed - ‘@ PlymUniJobs’. Furthermore, our team will happily manage the applications and create a shortlist of the most suited candidates. We have no fee, therefore we can offer you a prompt and efficient service that will lower recruitment costs and provide you with the perfect candidates! As an employer or a student, if you are in need of our services or simply would like more information on our Student Jobs team – please contact studentjobs@plymouth.ac.uk or phone 01752 587722.

The distribution of Plympton Community Magazine has never been beaten by any other local competitor! We have a dedicated marketing distribution company who deliver The Plympton Community Magazine through Plympton household letter box’s. The business was started by two companies who found it difficult to find reliable and economical distributors in the Plymouth and surrounding areas. Our distributors are respectful of occupants wishes at all times and they will never deliver material where the householder/business owner has requested us not to, we always ensure that all material is delivered into the letterbox and pushed through for security purposes. Our distributers use Full GPS tracking systems through mobile phones, this is a very unique system which enables us to view every step on every path, through every street, on every road and down every lane! This form of guaranteed tracking can also tell us how many distributers are working and how fast they are walking, this is then followed by spot checking to ensure they carry out the work as required to meet our very high standards. The Plympton Community Magazine is the original magazine which has been providing local information and great discounts to the people of Plympton for over 3 years. For the past 12 months we have chosen to use this new age form of distribution to ensure Plympton Magazine is delivered on time, every time, with a guaranteed tracked distribution!

Chaddlewood residents join forces in an effort to protect land An illegal encampment saw local residents try to take action to protect Glen Road Fields. We spoke to one resident, Martin Parnell, who took matters into his own hands.
M
artin Parnell, like many other residents, was outraged by the unauthorised encampment starting on 10th Augusts on the local playing field and to no avail, tried to research how the problem could be resolved. All he found were pages dedicated to travellers evading the law and nothing to support affected residents of an area, such as Chaddlewood. He decided to create a Facebook page called Chaddlewood Residents Action Group, including photos he had taken of the fields. Martin said: “I started ringing around our local councillors, our M.P. and the Plymouth City Council. to find out what they were doing and posted updates on the page encouraging everyone who “liked” the page to do the same.” By the time the page was a week old, it had over 1000 likes and it was wonderful to see lots of residents getting involved and putting pressure on those in power to act and act quickly” Martin spoke to the Social Inclusion Unit at Plymouth City Council who are tasked with dealing with incidents like these. He said: “I explained that some of our members had suggested holding an impromptu event on the fields just to demonstrate who’s space it actually is.” Martin voiced one of his greatest concerns, which was one of the access points the travellers were using crossed a pavement. He said: “I called into the Community Centre after work that afternoon and the traffic from the 22
fields over the pavement was so bad I dialled 999 on the spot fearing someone would be injured. At that stage, I knew an event especially if children were present was just too hazardous so the idea formed for a residents protest to demonstrate our strength of feeling about this issue” Before the event could go ahead, the travellers had already begun leaving the site. Although the one of the them had discovered the Facebook page and Martin admitted, to his regret, some confrontation occurred between himself and one of the travellers. The result of this was a decision to come face to face with the travellers in order to reach an understanding. Martin said “It was a positive experience. I didn’t feel threatened and we spoke about how they feel they’ve been received here and in other areas. I did enquire as to whether, if there were a transit site in the area whether they would use it and they said that they would.” Although the field has now been vacated, the Facebook page remains for local residents to come together and discuss relevant issues. “I asked as to whether people wanted to keep it open as a forum and news page and to protest about the proposed sale of the fields and the feedback was very positive. Councillor Glen Jordan has now joined the page and I have encouraged people to like his page to keep up to date with local news and community centre events and it is my hope that the community spirit that the page has rekindled can be continued.” If you would like to have any local news you would like to have published, please email lucy@oracle.uk.net

Carlton Big Band plays live at new Venue For those of you who have been waiting to hear when Carlton Big Band’s next open gig is taking place, here is some breaking news!
T
he Carlton Big Band will be playing at The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Millbay Rd. PL1 3LG on Sunday 28th September from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. The new venue provides a larger dance floor and extra parking! Elaine Davies is pleased to be able to return to The Duke of Cornwall remembering what a popular venue it was when the band had a monthly residency at ‘The Duke’ back in 2001, when Elaine first started the band. Carlton Big Band performed their first gig there too! With the season of Strictly Come Dancing and the popularity of swing dance classes and all things vintage, here is an opportunity to take to the ballroom floor and practice your steps or just sit and listen to music of a bygone era, in the revamped, stylish surroundings of The Duke of Cornwall Hotel where bar meals are also available. Elaine will be back on tenor sax and vocals after a busy summer, and Terry Sloggett will once again be playing lead
Alto saxophone, in his own amazing way. Andy Dawe will be leading the trombones with Callum Dowd leading the trumpets. The twelve piece Big Band consisting of four saxes, three trumpets, two trombones and rhythm section play the music of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Kenton, and Glenn Miller with a scattering of Latin and pop classics! The band has re-released a CD for the celebration of over a decade of Carlton Big Band.
Advance tickets are available at £7 from Kerrys Music Shop: Tel.01752 227120 and from The Duke of Cornwall Hotel: Tel:01752/275868 or £8 on the door. For enquiries call Elaine on 01752 668042.

An Outstanding Year for Ridgeway Post 16 Students P
ost 16 students at Ridgeway School are celebrating after achieving record results. The A level results this year were strong across the board with a number of exceptional performances from individual students. Barbora Cernakova achieved 2 A* grades and 3 A grades and will be heading off to St Andrews to study Mathematics and James Couch gained an impressive 3 A grades and an A*to secure a place at The University of York also to study Mathematics. Sivarajini Inparaj achieved an excellent 4 A grades and Katie Holmes secured 1 A*, 2 A grades and a B grade. Jason Ryder – Head of Post 16 commented: ‘I couldn’t be more proud of what our students have achieved today. It has been a real privilege to work with them and I am delighted to see their hard work pay off.’ Ridgeway School also offer a large number of vocational courses in everything from animal Care to Sport and Recreation and everything in between. The success rates this year represent the highest ever (far above the national average), with a large 28
number of vocational students going on to University courses and all students taking up employment or progressing to higher level courses and apprenticeships. Again, individual performances stand out this year. For example, Shannon Murphy won the award for ‘Learner of the Year’ across The Plymouth Learning Trust, an organisation that provides training placements for thousands of young people across the city. Headteacher John Didymus captured the mood today, ‘Today is one of those days that makes the whole job worthwhile. It’s wonderful to share a day of success with our young people and the work they have put in over many years has really paid off. I wish them all every success and I would like to thank parents and my teachers for supporting them in order to achieve such fantastic results’. Lemon drizzle cake
Ingredients
• 225g unsalted butter, softened • 225g self-raising flour • 225g caster sugar For the drizzle topping • 4 eggs • juice 1½ lemons • finely grated zest 1 lemon • 85g caster sugar
Method
1. 1. Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Beat together
225g softened unsalted butter and 225g caster sugar until pale and creamy, then add 4 eggs, one at a time, slowly mixing through. Sift in 225g flour, then add the finely grated zest of 1 lemon and mix until well combined. Line a loaf tin (8 x 21cm) with greaseproof paper, then spoon in the mixture and level the top with a spoon.
2. Bake for 45-50 mins until a thin skewer inserted into
recipe from bbcgoodfood.com
the centre of the cake comes out clean. While the cake is cooling in its tin, mix together the juice of 1 1/2 lemons and 85g caster sugar to make the drizzle. Prick the warm cake all over with a skewer or fork, then pour over the drizzle – the juice will sink in and the sugar will form a lovely, crisp topping. Leave in the tin until completely cool, then remove and serve. Will keep in an airtight container for 3-4 days, or freeze for up to 1 month.

ST LUKE’S GETS AWARD WINNING TREATMENT! The area outside the reception building at St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth looks stunning after local gardener Sam Ovens worked his green fingered magic and transformed the bare patches of earth in to a fantastic natural garden. 25 year old Sam, from Pelynt near Looe in Cornwall, recently won the Young Designer of the Year Award at the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society’s Flower Show at Tatton Park with his show garden “The Sky’s the Limit”. It was his wish after the show was over to donate the whole garden to St Luke’s and a few weeks ago the hundreds of plants were delivered to the hospice at Turnchapel. Over the duration of a few days a small band of enthusiastic volunteers armed with spades, forks and plenty of energy planted out pink verbenas along with delicate blue agastache and sweet smelling oregano interspersed with beautiful grasses that give the garden wonderful texture and movement framing the building at St Luke’s perfectly.
After - Photo by Dom Moore
The intention of Sam’s award winning designer was to reconnect people with plants and wildlife, and remind us how precious our outdoor spaces are. “I wanted to show that sometimes the simplest things are the best things,” he says. “I think the hospice is a perfect home for the garden and I am really pleased with the way the design has turned out”. Within a few minutes of planting butterflies and bees were already taking advantage of the new garden and visitors to the hospice were stopping to congratulate the volunteers on such a wonderful effort and commenting on how beautiful the garden was looking. Communications & Marketing Manager at St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, Robert Maltby said: “We can’t thank Sam enough for donating his beautiful garden for our patients, visitors and staff to enjoy. It really is a masterpiece and you can appreciate why Sam won Designer of the Year Award. I am sure it will bring many years of enjoyment to all”.
