Whether the budget is tight, or you just love to get craftythere is something extra special about receiving a hand made gift at Christmas. Take a look below for some great handmade ideas, and use this as the perfect opportunity to stay at home, blast the Christmas music and get creative in the lead up to the big day!
Mason jars are a staple for anything crafty; and the festive season is a perfect opportunity to utilise this great storage alternative. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination but to help you out, we have compiled some great recipes below to make your Christmas gifts extra special.
You will need: 1/2 kilo of soy wax flakes, mason jar or regular jar, 1 wick- cut to size, 30 drops of orange essential oil, 50 drops of cinnamon leaf essential oil, glue dots (optional)
Everyone loves baking, especially at Christmas. Fill a mason jar with the ingredients needed for their favourite cookies, cakes or sweet treats.
You will need: 150g plain flour, 3 tbsp soft brown sugar,1 tbsp caster sugar, 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon, 1/2 tsp ground ginger All they need to do is add 100g of butter and mix to make a cookie dough.
What to do: ● Attach your glue dots to the underside of the wick. Press this to the bottom of the jar, ensuring you push hard enough to make it stick. ● Measure out your wax flakes. To find out how much solid wax you’ll need, simply fill the container and then double it. ● Melt the wax. You can do this in the microwave but you can’t control the temperature as easily so it’s best to make a bain marie. ● Once the wax has cooled slightly, but is still in its liquid state you can add the essential oils. Gently transfer the mixture to your jar. ● It is important that you keep the wick upright whilst the wax hardens- you can use chopsticks or something sturdy to hold the wick whilst it sets. Give the candle 24 hours to set and then you’re done! Your candle is ready to decorate.
10
You will need: 210g plain flour, 3/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda, 100g caster sugar, 340g plain chocolate chips, 110g dark brown soft sugar Attach a card with the following information: Empty contents of jar into a large bowl. In separate bowl combine 170g butter, 1 1/2 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Beat until creamy. Add to dry mixture. Drop tablespoons of the batter onto ungreased baking trays. Bake in a preheated 190 C / Gas 5 oven for 8 to 10 minutes.

If you are super thrifty, you can decorate your entire house without once having to brave the town centre for shop bought decorations! Making handmade decorations is great if you have children- it’s the perfect way to spend a chilly December day at home with the family. Most decorations can be made out of every day objects found at home.
Perhaps the easiest of all DIY Christmas decorations! All you need are some lolly sticks- (and to eat lots of lollies) and a hot glue gun. Some really strong super glue will also work well. Why not get some gold or silver paint and really jazz them up? It would be so easy to get carried away and cover the entire house in these DIY beauties.
Felt is the perfect material for making low maintenence ornaments to hang on the tree. You can buy large sheets of felt from your local craft shop which won’t cost much at all. There are plenty of Christmassy themed stencils online that you can print out for a helping handor go solo and get cutting! A sharp pair of scissors will ensure the edges of the felt do not fray. If you are feeling extra ambitious, you can pick up some stuffing from the craft shop to create 3D ornaments. Simply cut out two exact replicas of the same stencil- stitch up half way, stuff with the cotton stuffing and stitch all the way up! These will stay safe when packed away in the attic and are guaranteed to look good on the tree year after year.
Pinecones are everywhere at this time of year. Why not put them to good use as an alternative to glass baubles? Perfect if you have young children or mischevious pets. You can simply dip the pinecones in brightly coloured paints and attach a string to the top by pushing a pin through the pinecone. If you have more time, and fancy getting more intricate- you can paint the tips of each spike- and cover with some festive glitter. Guaranteed these will create a statement look for your tree this Christmas.
Another great activity for families with young children! This DIY decoration requires three ingredients- pasta, glitter and string! Of course, ribbon pasta would work the best. Set down some newspaper as this could get messy. Cover the pasta in some strong glue and sprinkle over some festive glitter. Once the pasta has dried, tie some string around each piece to create a garland. You can even tie on some christmas ribbon for that extra festive touch. This small but effective addition would look great across the fireplace, or even wrapped around a tree!
You don’t have to spend a fortune on expensive beauty products. There are some great home made recipes for everything your skin needs in the cold winter monthsthat can easily be made at home.
You will need: 1/2 cup light brown sugar, 1/2 cup coconut oil, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger, 5 to 8 drops gingerbread fragrance oil Combine sugar and coconut oil in the bowl of a stand mixer and beat with a paddle attachment until a fluffy paste starts to form. Scrape down sides and add in vanilla, spices and fragrance oil. Beat on low until spices work their way into the mix, increase to medium speed and beat for 30 seconds or until light and fluffy. Transfer to a jar and seal with a lid. Dress it up if giving as a gift, with a small wooden spoon and a handmade gift tag.

A simple box of food makes a big difference, with food banks helping to prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.
In 2016/17, The Trussell Trust’s Food bank Network How do the food banks work? provided 1,182,954 three-day emergency food supplies and support to UK people in crisis. Of these, Food is donated > food is sorted and stored > professionals identify individuals in need > clients over 430,000 went to children. receive their food. The Plymouth Food Bank operates out of the Oasis Project, a community hub that offers personal support and development opportunities to the people of Plymouth. They don’t just offer food- Oasis Project can help you with a prospective job interview by providing suitable clothing, and can also offer training and
Schools, churches, businesses and individuals can all donate food directly to the food bank, or through designated donation points in supermarkets around the city. Large collections also take place at fundraisers and charity events. Volunteers then sort and check that all of the food donated is non perishable and in date, and this is then packed into boxes ready to be given to people in need. People can find themselves in crisis at any point in their lives. In order to ensure the right people are getting the appropriate help, food bank vouchers are issued by local authorities such as citizen’s advice, health visitors and children’s centres. Basic details will be taken, and depending on your circumstances you will be offered the appropriate guidance needed to support you.
