Welcome to the August edition of Plympton Magazine. This month we were blessed with not one but TWO Mikes who both have a wealth of knowledge and we are thrilled to have both featured.

This month we got to meet the man behind the camera, Mike Lister and find out about his story. Juggling a full-time I.T. job and running a very busy photography diary would tire most, but passion and the love of his craft are what keep Mike going.

It’s no secret that our money doesn’t stretch far these days and yet so many of us aren’t investing perhaps out of fear and lack of knowledge but thankfully author and Behavioural Investment Coach, Mike LeGassick, is here to instil some confidence when it comes to investing our money into the stock market. It’s an inspiring read and easily digestible as it’s written in plain English – no jargon here thank you!

We’ve also put together some wonderful editorials which will hopefully inspire you to grow your own veg, read a new book or book a weekend away and immerse yourself in nature.

Lastly, thank you to Boringdon Hall for offering the ever-so quintessential competition prize in honour of Afternoon Tea Week.

GROW YOUR OWN

In a time when we’re being a bit more conscious of our pennies and carbon footprints, National Allotment Week is a great reminder to roll up those sleeves and get stuck in (quite literally).

Who doesn’t love the idea of being selfsustainable - Waking up in the morning and strolling out to your garden and plucking fresh oranges from your tree, collecting the eggs from your chicken coop on your way back to the kitchen which is filled with the comforting aromas of the soft loaf of bread you baked last night. Of course, the reality of most morning routines tends to be hitting the snooze alarm once or twice, getting out of bed and rushing to prepare the breakfasts and lunches for the day, getting toothpaste down your top and catching your belt loop on the door handle as you rush out the door. The last thing on our minds is our vitamin C intake for the day. But there’s no harm in manifesting the life we’re after right?

So let’s just start with baby steps as it’s all about making those 1% improvements each day to achieve the overall goals. Consistency is key especially when it comes to your veg growing.

Don’t be put off if your home isn’t equipped with the soily starter from mother nature, there are many alternatives for those with low-maintenance outdoor. Now, before we get into it, we first need to cover some ground rules before reaping the rewards of our first harvest.

the basics

It’s exciting trying something new, the prospects of what we can grow and the thrill of finally including your produce in a home-cooked meal but there is a bit of work to get to that point. Start small - it’s better to be over the moon with what you’ve produced in a small garden than over whelmed and fed up with the commitment of a larger one. When selecting your starter seeds, be sure to take note of which season they are best grown in – this will be displayed on the

seed packet. Remember, some vegetables can take months to grow and need to be sown during the winter months to be ready for spring/summer. Lastly, be sure to locate a good area for your vegetable patch, pots or planter – this could be a sunny window sill or a sheltered sunny area outdoors.

What tO GROW

If you’re new to the veggie-patch life, then opting for a low-maintenance vegetable is a good place to start. Radishes, chives, potatoes, courgettes, rocket, chillis and beetroot have a quick turnaround and suffer from fewer pests and diseases. Tomato plants are a great staple for any household starting out their veg growing journey. If you find that your designated growing area is a bit more open to the elements, a tomato bush is more robust and sturdy than a tomato plant, so it can withstand those windy days. Of course, grow what you like to eat but pay attention to the difficulty level of growing certain crops. Some vegetables need a little more work, so postponing the growth of an aubergine, for example, may have to wait until your second year of veg-growing as they’re known to be quite tricky.

WheRe tO GROW

Contrary to popular beliefs, you don’t need a large garden or an allotment to start your new hobby. Simply designating a small area of your garden for your veggie patch is perfect or you could even grow your goods in a lovely window box or even hanging baskets. However, one thing must stay prevalentsunlight. Most vegetables need 6-8 hours of sunlight a day in order to grow, if you have a shadier space then opt for vegetables and herbs that can tolerate it such as kale, spinach, chives and thyme. Carrots, radishes and beetroots can also cope with lower sun exposure, just ensure they are getting at least 4 hours of direct sunlight a day for happy and healthy veggies.

PlaNteRs

Raised beds are a great option, not only for aesthetic reasons but it provides flexibility for the best positioning. Using planters are brilliant if you’ve got a courtyard, balcony or if the soil isn’t the healthiest as you can fill it with fresh compost. If you’d really like to get creative, car boot sales and charity shops are brilliant for finding old buckets, wheelbarrows, even sinks that can fashion quite the unique raised bed. Repurposing old pallets, decking or other wooden materials create perfect DIY planters, just head to Youtube for a tutorial and voila, your very own bespoke planter.

We celebrate the 21st year of National Allotment Week this year on 7th – 13th August. Of course, Allotments have been around for hundreds of years but it wasn’t until after WW1 that land was made available to all instead of just the labouring poor for food growth. Today, allotments are leased from Landlords to allotment holders who pay rent, this covers water rates and general maintenance bills. Rents can vary as there isn’t anything that states how much rent should be charged but it’s usually in the region of £25 - £125 a year per plot (depending on size). It’s recommended for beginners that a good plot size is half a plot and you may need to aside about eight hours a week to tend and care for your allotment. There are 37 allotment sites in Plymouth alone spanning from PL2 postcodes all the way to PL9. The name, postcodes and number of plots can be found on Plymouth.gov.uk/ find-allotment.

Pests & diseases

Those unwanted “guests” that keep us on our toes – pests, weeds and diseases. Unfortunately, this is something we may face at some point but arming yourself with the right strategies and knowledge should help act quickly and keep them away.

A great tip for keeping the slimy slugs off your vibrant veg is to put a copper tape perimeter around your crop – they don’t like to cross it! Another option is planting alliums as this naturally wards them off. Speaking of interplanting, planting marigolds along with your tomato plants are brilliant for discouraging those pesky whiteflies. Keeping your plants as healthy as can be are less susceptible to attacks. Ensure they are well fed and watered well in dry weather but also be conscious to feed the soil with good compost which promotes good root systems and healthy growth.

Photography is one of Mike’s passions but he’s not ready to bid farewell to his love affair with IT and computers just yet. So, with careful consideration, he’s built a harmonious balance between his two loves. national book lovers day

This one is for all those bibliophiles out there (a person who has a great appreciation for or collects books). Find your favourite nook, stick the kettle on and sit back and lose yourself in a good book.

Name a better feeling than wandering into a bookshop and being immediately struck with a sense of excitement. Absorbing the hundreds of books that line the walls filled with beautiful words conjured up by masterful storytellers or digesting years’ worth of research which has been lovingly put together to deepen and expand our minds.

Books are always an unsung hero, especially in this digital age where we are so easily drawn into the convenience of TV. Of course, they have their place and are enjoyable, but nothing will ever measure up to reading a good book and having your mind and imagination taken to places the digital world can’t.

There is so much reading material out there and it’s wonderful when you pick up a book by an unknown author and you can’t put it down - the feeling of ultimate reward when you’ve found that hidden gem. I am hoping to do just that with some fiction and non-fiction book recommendations for you this month;

‘The Choice Point’ by Jonathon Rhodes and

Joanna Groves

Published in June 2023, British psychologist John Rhodes has looked into the scientific method of achieving your goals. Delving into Functional Imagery Training (FIT) to help us in those moments of conflicting choices along with infusing mindfulness, motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy in a user-friendly model.

‘Awful Auntie’ by David Walliams

In the children’s book, Awful Auntie, Young Stella Saxby finds herself orphaned and the rightful heir to Saxby Hall. Whilst many enjoy books on a daily basis, this is a great day for those who perhaps don’t feel like they have the time to sit and enjoy a good book. The day is a reminder to give ourselves this time, to unwind and take a step back from the business that life tends to throw our way. Book Lovers Day is also a great chance to encourage younger ones to read whether that be taking them to a book or charity shop and allowing them to select a new book or by reading to or with them.

BRITISH FIREWORK CHAMPIONSHIP

Heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cases. Beat the butter and caster sugar together using an electric whisk until pale and fluffy, then whisk in the eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides of the bowl after each addition.

Time to stick the kettle on and roll up our sleeves for Afternoon Tea week from 7th - 13th. Who doesn’t enjoy the fresh smell of a Victoria sponge?

Mini Vicky Sponge Cakes

Makes - 12 Difficulty - Easy INGREDIENTS

• 150g unsalted butter,

• 150g golden caster sugar

• 150g self-raising flour

• 250ml double cream

Add the milk, vanilla, flour and a pinch of salt, then beat again until smooth. Divide the batter evenly between the paper cases. Bake for 1720 mins, or until the sponges are golden, risen and a skewer inserted into the middles comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 mins, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. 3

Classic Scones

Makes 8 Difficulty - Easy INGREDIENTS

• 350g self-raising flour

• 1 tsp baking powder

• 85g butter, cut into cubes

• 3 tbsp caster sugar

• 175ml milk 3 4

• 2 eggs

• 1 tbsp milk

• ½ tsp vanilla extract

• 2 tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for dusting

•185g jam of your choice

Whip the cream and icing sugar together to soft peaks using an electric whisk. Spread a little jam over the base of each sponge, then spoon or pipe over a dollop of whipped cream and sandwich with the tops of the sponges. Dust with a little icing sugar before serving.

• squeeze lemon juice

• beaten egg, to glaze

Remove the paper cases from the sponges, then split the sponges in half through the equator using a small serrated knife. Set aside. 2

• jam and clotted cream, to serve

Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Tip the self-raising flour into a large bowl with ¼ tsp salt and the baking powder, then mix. Add the butter, then rub in with your fingers until the mix looks like fine crumbs. Stir in the caster sugar.

Put the milk into a jug and heat in the microwave for about 30 secs until warm, but not hot. Add the vanilla extract and a squeeze of lemon juice, then set aside for a moment.

Put a baking tray in the oven. Make a well in the dry mix, then add the liquid and combine it quickly with a cutlery knife – it will seem pretty wet at first. Scatter some flour onto the work surface and tip the dough out.

Dredge the dough and your hands with a little more flour, then fold the dough over 2-3 times until it’s a little smoother. Pat into a round about 4cm deep. Take a 5cm smooth edged cutter and dip it into some flour. Cut into the dough, until you have four scones. You may need to press what’s left of the dough back into a round to cut out another four.

Brush the tops with a beaten egg, then carefully arrange on the hot baking tray. Bake for 10 mins until risen and golden on the top. Eat just warm or cold on the day of baking, generously topped with jam and clotted cream. If freezing, freeze once cool. Defrost, then put in a low oven (about 160C/140C fan/gas 3) for a few minutes to refresh.

Smoked Trout Tartlets

Makes - 12 Difficulty - Easy INGREDIENTS

• 320g pack ready-rolled shortcrust pastry

• 100g crème fraîche

• 1 lemon, zested

• 2 tbsp chopped chives

• 2 eggs, plus 1 egg yolk

• 3 tbsp milk

Combine all the remaining ingredients except the smoked trout in a large jug and season well with a little pinch of salt (the trout is already quite salty) and a good grinding of black pepper. Mix well to combine, ensuring there are no lumps of crème fraîche or egg.

Bake in the oven for 18-20 mins until the pastry is golden and the filling lightly golden and puffed up – they will sink a little after a few minutes. Serve warm.

Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Unroll the pastry and, keeping it on its paper, cut out 12 discs of pastry using a 7cm round cutter. Use the pastry discs to line a 12-hole shallow tart tin. Put in the fridge to chill while you make the filling.

Remove the tin from the fridge and divide the trout between the pastry cases. Carefully pour over the crème fraîche mixture, leaving a 1-2mm rim of pastry at the top. It helps to give the mixture a stir after each pour so the chives and lemon zest don’t sink to the bottom.

It’s fascinating to watch how global events transfer over into interior design trends. The most recent shift we are currently witnessing is the awareness of climate change which is causing us to think twice about what our actions may have on the planet and wildlife. These actions such as opting for reusable items rather than disposable, choosing organic materials and produce, reconnecting with nature and converting to greener energy have all played a part in changing our home interiors. The halt to global travel in the past two years has also seen an increase in international styles working their way into our homes.

Blending the lines between nature and the indoors has been increasing in popularity with houseplants, natural materials and open-plan spaces all becoming commonplace. Large bi-folding doors that lead into the garden and Velux windows with a view of the sky are a brilliant investment as they uplift dark rooms and create a light and airy feel.

The organic nature of wood, stone and linen has a tactile quality with naturally warm tones that complement each other well. They also come with a variety of textures which is so important to adding depth, interest and dimension to any room. Borrowing colours from nature to compliment these organic materials have influenced the paint pallets we are using.

Upcycling old pieces of furniture and accessories are a waste-free alternative to décor that often hold more

historic value and are more unique as opposed to new items. Sustainable textile materials have become more widely available which means the items will last longer and won’t carry microplastics that are harmful to the environment.

Arches and curves are replacing harsh, straight lines. This doesn’t need to be shown in the walls of the house but more in the furniture that is chosen. Rounded armchairs and sofas, curved rugs and tables etc. will all help to achieve this effect.

International influence has been growing in our homes too. Botanical feature walls of distant lands, Moroccanstyle textiles and tiles, African animal features and desert colours are all on trend. Two-toned kitchen counters add interest without overcomplicating it. Paint swatches will always show complimentary colours together so that it’s easier to find two colours that match well. If you have a particularly small/dark kitchen, try to avoid darker shades or use the darker shade towards the bottom and save the brighter colour for the overhead cabinets. The businesses that surround us shape our daily lives, from banks and insurance companies handling our financial matters to utility providers and technology companies revolutionising our connections and interactions. Despite our reliance on these corporations, many individuals display an astonishing aversion to investing in the very stock market that fuels the growth of these great businesses. The question arises: Why is this the case?

Perhaps these individuals have not taken the time to contemplate the true nature of the stock market, leading to their aversion. The power of words cannot be overstated. Consider a hypothetical conversation about investments. If I asked about your investment strategy, you might describe owning a diverse collection of shares in 500 of the largest, most reputable, financially stable, profitable, and innovative companies on the planet—companies we engage with daily without a second thought. This strategy would likely be appealing, sensible, and reassuring. However, if you simply responded with “I invest in the stock market,” the immediate reaction might be that it seems excessively risky, especially for someone who isn’t particularly young. In reality, both responses are virtually identical, as owning fractions of the 500 largest and most stable constituents through an index fund mirrors investing in the entire stock market.

Let’s embark on a thought experiment. Glance at your recent bank statement and reflect on where the lion’s share of your hard-earned money goes. to discretionary activities such as purchasing from online retailers like Amazon, subscribing to streaming services like Netflix, enjoying television services like Sky TV, and indulging in holiday experiences. In this financial exchange, the companies benefit the most. They thrive because of our continuous reliance on their products and services. Yet, despite this reality, many hesitate to invest in these very same companies that billions of consumers effortlessly use in their everyday lives.

The fundamental principles of investing arithmetic are straightforward, yet many investors struggle to acknowledge what is glaringly evident. It is even more prevalent that they intentionally overlook reality because it contradicts their ingrained beliefs, biases, excessive self-assurance, and unquestioning adherence to the conventional functioning of financial markets.

Let’s walk through a day in the life of a typical UK consumer and see how it translates to investing. Picture yourself or your neighbour in this narrative. Your day begins with the alarm on your Apple or Samsung smartphone. You check for calls and messages, scroll through your Facebook, and Twitter accounts, and perhaps watch a mildly amusing cat video on YouTube. These activities are not unique to you, as over 2.2 billion iPhones and 1 billion Samsung smartphones have been sold globally.

Your telecom provider might be Vodafone, a giant in the industry servicing millions of customers monthly. Adjusting the thermostat in your bedroom, you likely use a Honeywell (HON) thermostat, tapping into British Gas.

As part of your routine, you lace up your Nike trainers for a morning run. Nike sells an impressive 25 pairs of shoes every second. You might jog alongside your neighbour, who works for IBM, a multinational company employing hundreds of thousands globally. During lunchtime, you grab a meal from McDonald’s, joining millions of others who purchase meals there daily. You might enjoy a Coca-Cola, with 1.9 billion servings consumed worldwide. Post-lunch, you withdraw cash from an HSBC ATM, one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organisations.

A visit to Boots to pick up essentials leads you to purchase Scotchgard Spot Remover, Post-It Notes, and Scotch Tape, all produced by 3M. You also grab some Band-Aids, a Johnson & Johnson product. At Boots, you fill a prescription for a cholesterol medication like Lipitor, made by Pfizer—one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, employing over 90,000 people globally. Instead of paying cash, you decide to use your Visa or Mastercard credit card. Visa is a widely used credit card network globally, while Mastercard has over 290 million cards issued. On your drive home, you remember the patio project you started two weeks ago. You stop by B&Q, the biggest home improvement retailer in the UK, owned by Kingfisher plc, an international home improvements company with over 1,900 stores.

Before heading home, you make a final stop at Tesco. This multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer are one of the largest in the UK, with millions of customers visiting its stores every day.

After loading up your car, you grab a pizza for family night. The plan is to watch a film on Netflix or Amazon Prime, two of the most popular streaming services used by millions worldwide. While watching, something catches your eye, and you pause the movie to order it from your smartphone on Amazon.

As you unwind from the day, remember that the companies you interact with daily, from Apple to B&Q, are not just businesses you buy from but also potential investments. How many of these great companies did you and everyone else use today? Most people easily engage with 20 to 30 of them through both necessity and choice. Now, multiply that by the billions of consumers on Earth. Despite this, many people still perceive the stock market as very risky. I beg to differ.

The companies we’ve discussed represent the strength of the global economy and continue to operate regardless of market fluctuations. They strive to innovate and increase their profits year after year. So, as the global economy faces tough times, have faith in these corporations. Holding a share in these formidable businesses signifies part-ownership and is not akin to gambling with a lottery ticket. It is a logical step to invest in the companies we utilise daily, even during challenging times, as long as our foundational analysis of these businesses remains steady.
