Introduction In 2013 and 2014 São Paulo City Health Department, via its Municipal STD/AIDS Program , conducted its first São Paulo City Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices Survey (KAPS-SPC). The survey's objectives were to assess the degree of knowledge about HIV, other Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Hepatitis B and C infection; to learn about other aspects relating to sexual and reproductive health, HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C testing coverage, as well as situations of vulnerability faced by the population in SPC's different regions. The household survey was conducted with individuals aged 15 to 64 resident in the city of São Paulo. The sample was selected based on the 2010 Census tracts. The domains for planning the sample were the city's five regions (CenterWest, Southeast, South, East and North), as well as gender and age group (15-24, 25-34, 35-49 and 50-64 years old) of the population living in the urban region of São Paulo city. 80 Census Tracts were systematically selected to be Primary Sampling Units (PSU) proportionally to the size of each of the city's regions. The selection of the households and household member in each tract took place in accordance with quotas comprised of three variables: gender, age group and conjugal status. 4318 people were interviewed.

Knowledge about HIV and Aids Considering this background and the constitutional right to information, it is the duty of the Municipal STD/AIDS Program (PM STD/AIDS) to scale up access to every kind of knowledge about STDs, HIV and AIDS in SPC.

One of the mainstays of prevention strategies is unrestricted access to male and female condoms and lubricant gel, in addition to information with the addresses of health services providing them free of charge.

The HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Disease epidemics are in constant evolution and this in turn brings new challenges to overcoming them. In order to formulate better health policies, we need to know how these epidemics operate in our territory which is characterized by regional specificities. São Paulo City has more than 11 million inhabitants, concentrates 12.3% of all Brazil's AIDS cases and currently faces an STD epidemic as well.

did not access condoms in the last 12 months.

Linking information from different systems in use in the city's health services with the KAPS-SPC can increase the potential to define more adequate strategies for these epidemics, within an approach based on human rights and civil liberties that characterizes how the epidemic is tackled in the city of São Paulo.

HIV testing

Also of relevance is the possibility of being able to compare SPC with the rest of Brazil, given that the same variables were used in the KAPS-SPC as in the National KAP Survey. Finally, the information resulting from the KAPS-SPC, which above all will be used to organize health promotion, prevention and care actions, will also be available to the community which in turn may plan other actions to fight these diseases.

Early diagnosis is an important strategy in the fight against the HIV epidemic. It enables the timely starting of treatment, it is fundamental for improving the quality of life of people living with the virus, it reduces AIDS mortality rates and has recently been proven to be a powerful prevention tool.
