Introduction
The Peter MoyesAnglican Community School Subject Selection Information outlines subjects offered at the School. It aims to guide secondary students and their families toward one of their most important tasks in secondary education – life beyond secondary schooling.
The School is committed to ensuring that all students achieve personal excellence in all areas of endeavour. It is vital to guide students into a choice of courses which allows them to work to their strengths, challenge but not exceed their capacity, and equip them with the qualifications they need to pursue their careers and ambitions after they leave the School.
The following Subject Selection information provides key details and links regarding the content of each course, the types of assessment applied, the attributes required for success in that course and any formal prerequisites.
The School makes every effort to ensure that the information enclosed is current and correct; however, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to meet the requirements of courses and pathways. Please note the provision of website addresses to access current information. This directs students and their families to more detailed curriculum information and entry requirements.
The Subject Selection Information informs students on the selections of subjects, electives and courses that contribute to their attainment of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
Students are encouraged to view School Curriculum and Assessment Authority website (SCSA) directly for current and precise information regarding WACE and Secondary Graduation requirements.

Careers investigations
Over their secondary schooling years, students undergo a process of careers and future pathways investigation. Through the guidance of the School’s Careers and Pathways Coordinator (VET), Heads of Departments and the Head of Year, students discover and reflect on what they know about themselves, their aptitudes, and strengths as well as exploring a range of careers and post-secondary courses. They also investigate the choice of courses offered in Year 11 and Year 12 at the School.
In selecting electives, students should seek advice from as many people as possible, such as teachers and parents. Students should seriously consider recommendations based on experience and individual strengths, rather than selecting courses based on their friendship group.
Additionally, all current Year 10 students benefit from presentations from TAFE and Tertiary Institutions, Heads of Department, and subject teachers on all the courses offered in Year 11. In Year 10 this process culminates in Term 2 with personalised interviews with the families and students to facilitate informed Subject Selection for Year 11 and Year 12.
It is to be noted that the selection process is always restricted by due dates to ensure that the School procedure of timetabling and class creation are made in a timely manner. This includes matters such as staffing, rooming and booklists. Students and parents must appreciate that changes to selections will therefore be restricted in subsequent student choices made at the end of that year and in the subsequent academic year. This will affect the flexibility of the student to receive preferences in electives and courses.
Flexible Pathway
The Flexible Pathway is a specialised Pathway designed to prepare students for a trade or employment in many related occupations. The General and Certificate courses on offer within this pathway have a significant focus on both theory and practical skills related to employment as well as trades and enabling students to achieve their WACE across Year 11 and 12.
This Flexible pathway equips students with skills and broad capabilities that will adequately prepare them for employment, trade or an apprenticeship. Students will complete Year 12 fully prepared and confident in their ability to cope in real-life scenarios and realistic workplace settings.
With the support and guidance of their classroom teachers, their experience in partnership through CareerLink as well as continuing to develop their literacy and numeracy skills for the workforce, students will leave PMACS confident, competent and workplace ready.
Time Management
Good time management requires every student to create and follow a weekly planner. This prioritises their time to meet both non-required tasks and deadlines for task completion. Results come from actions and a growth mindset. The setting and writing down specific goals and reducing the gaps in their course content ensures that the student is motivated to achieve their goals with a focussed effort. By knowing that the goals that are personally set and believe in are a constant reminder. The steps taken to achieve SMART goals eliminate the ‘I can’t’ sabotage of a fixed mindset.
Progress, achievement, and class groupings in any year group provide a valuable indication as to student success in the following academic year, whether that is Year 8 or Year 12.
Students and their parents are asked to view the relevant links below to assist with the academic journey ahead. Where possible, also inquire into the subsequent academic years for information and peace of mind. Progress in any current academic year makes more sense when the destination is known!
