Subject Selection Counselling Process
The School is committed to ensuring that all students achieve personal excellence in all areas of endeavour. It is vital to guide students into a choice of courses which allow them to work to their strengths, which challenges but not exceeds their capacity to equip them with the qualifications they need to pursue their careers and ambitions after they leave the School.
This Subject Selection Information provides the basis of the Subject Selection process by providing clear information regarding the content of each course, the types of assessment applied, the attributes required for a success in that course andformal prerequisites. All current Year 10 students have had the benefit of presentations from Tertiary Institutions, Heads of Department, and subject teachers on all the courses offered in Year 11.
Counselling occurs for all Year 10 students and parents is provided from many personnel in the Secondary School including the Dean of Teaching & Learning, Dean of Students and the Careers and Pathways Coordinator. The student’s Head of Year provides additional individual counselling for proposed course selection, as required.
In selecting Courses and Pathways students should seek advice from as many people as possible, such as teachers and parents. They should seriously consider recommendations based on experience.
All students should consider university entry requirements if that is their desired postsecondary destination, noting the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre website (TISC) website www.tisc.edu.au. Check the website forAustralian TertiaryAdmission Ranking (ATAR) cut-offs for entry into the public universities in Western Australia.
They should also review TertiaryAnd Further Education (TAFE) entry requirements, especially taking note of the Selection Criteria. Consider which prerequisites apply to any further studies under investigation.
In evaluating their strengths and weaknesses demonstrated in the student’s current studies, students and their parents should ensure that the selected course match desired goals, abilities and interests.
Students and parents are encouraged to review past School reports and teacher recommendations for guidance.
