Introduction “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” Acts 2:42 Dear Christ Church, In Acts, we read that the early believers’ life and worship rested on four elements: teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer. Like these first Christians, we gather every Sunday to share these practices and to embody the “true story of the whole world.” Of course true Christian discipleship doesn’t happen just on Sunday. Our spiritual lives are entangled and intertwined with the ordinary: in our work, studies and relationships. This book is meant to be a connection between our Lord’s Day worship and our lives throughout the week. In its pages you will find all the historic building blocks of individual and communal Christian worship. Each weekly unit contains the Psalm for the week, readings from the Old and New Testaments (including the sermon text for the week), and a prayer service designed for both individual and corporate use. We encourage you to take time each week to read, pray, and reflect on some, or all, of these elements. These texts and themes will find their way into our Lord’s Day worship at CCD and into Matins prayer gatherings. “A practice of common prayer experience is paramount to our faith. and mission. As we pray and patiently submit to these words in the midst of many seasons, we find that the Triune God is truly the anchor of our lives. This edition of the Christ Church Prayer Book will take us through the season of Advent, which is the beginning of the Christian liturgical calendar. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again!

An Overview of the Christian Year The Christian year begins on the first week of Advent and follows the pattern of the life of Christ. This orientation towards time allows us to communally and individually follow Jesus through His life, death, and resurrection. The rhythm of this story defines the Christian life.

Common Terms in Historic Christian Devotion Lectionary: A pre-selected collection of Scripture readings that follows the liturgical year in a three-year cycle. Readings in this prayer guide are taken from the Revised Common Lectionary. Visit here (http://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/) to see readings from the Revised Common Lectionary in the context of the three-year reading cycle. Compline: The final service of the day in the Christian tradition of fixed-hour prayer. Commits the completed workday and approaching nighttime to God. Collect: A short written prayer extolling a member of the Trinity for a divine attribute. It usually includes a petition based on that attribute and the mediation of Jesus Christ. Gloria Patri: The “Glory Be” is an ancient Trinitarian hymn of praise often said after the recitation of a Psalm. The repetition of this hymn consistently reminds us that our lives are lived within the context of eternity, and that God’s presence and providence undergirds everything that happens. Canticle: A hymn or song of praise taken from a passage of Scripture, not from the Psalms. Antiphon: A short response from a congregation (said or sung) in the context of a Psalm or other Scripture reading. Proper: Part of the Christian liturgy that varies according to the date, in accordance with the Liturgical Year. Helps organize the Christian orientation towards time around the weekly gatherings of the Church. Matins: Originally referred to the concluding morning service of the monastic prayer cycle. It is now often used by Protestant denominations to refer to any morning service.

Foundational Christian Texts and Creeds Memorization of these texts is a vital part of rehearsing and remembering the faith that all Christians share (in all times and places). These standard texts emphasize the theological foundations of Trinity and Incarnation, the wellspring of Christian faith and practice. These are the building blocks of corporate worship that all Christians share in common.

The Lordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Apostlesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Historic Prayers of the Church Prayer for the Morning: Te Deum Laudamus – A Song of the Church *Two Fathers of the early church wrote this hymn: St. Ambrose and St. Augustine

We praise you, O God, we acclaim you as the Lord; all creation worships you, the Father everlasting. Prayer for the Evening: Phos Hilaron â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A Song of the Light *Originally written in New Testament Greek, this is the earliest known hymn recorded outside of the Bible that is still in use today. Both Eastern and Western Churches use this hymn in daily worship.
