A

B.C. Supreme Court jury heard Allan Crawshaw’s version Wednesday of the events that led up to him shooting his boss three times in the head 20 years ago after being suspended from work for a day.

The Chilliwack man was convicted of first degree murder in 1994 and handed an automatic life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years.

He is now seeking early release under the so-called “faint hope clause” that allows him to apply to seek early parole after serving 15 years of his sentence. (The statute has been removed, but remains in force for offences committed before Dec. 2, 2011.)

Crawshaw took the stand Wednesday morning.

The former union shop steward told the jury he hadn’t planned to kill his Fraser Valley Foods boss Trevor Newberry when Crawshaw came to work with a rifle and two pipe bombs.

He said he had only wanted to march him at gunpoint in front of the plant and make him apologize.

He said he brought the pipe bombs to throw into Newberry’s office where the computers were and “do some damage there,” but decided against using them when he saw there were other workers in the area who might be injured.

wo-year-old Lilee-Jean Putt’s parents desperately want to make the toddler’s last few months alive as full as possible.

After battling aggressive brain cancer for nearly two years, Andrew Putt and Chelsey Whittle have been advised that LJ’s tumour is back and nothing more can be done.

nearly two-year roller coaster ride for parents pushing for early French immersion (EFI) in the Chilliwack school district is finally over.

On Tuesday, the Chilliwack school board voted to start an EFI program “at the earliest possible date subject to sufficient registration.”

Trustee Silvia Dyck, who added the motion to the agenda at the beginning of the public meeting, made it clear “earliest possible date” meant 2014 unless circumstances made that somehow impossible.

The decision was greeted with high fives among parents gathered in the boardroom.

“We’re excited, ecstatic,” parent Travis Forstbauer told theTimes.

Less than a month earlier, the board (including Dyck) had voted 3to-2 against starting a new program in 2014 because there wasn’t enough money in the budget.

That decision unleashed a flood of criticism from parents on social media and in letters to the editor criticizing the three trustees who voted against the program and trustee Martha Wiens for abstaining.

But it was an “aha moment” and not the public outcry that changed Dyck’s mind, she said.

ason Layton carefully tends to an alder and maple wood fire to smoke a pork shoulder for six hours, after which he applies a rub, and puts it back on for another six hours.

If you are within a hundred metres of Layton’s custom-built smoker you’ll know it.

If you like it, you’ll love it, but if you don’t, you won’t.

Therein lies Layton’s problem as the new entrepreneur set up his smoker and pulled pork sandwich cart on May 21 on Mill Street in downtown Chilliwack.

The smoke pulled ‘em in but it also pissed ‘em off.

“It looked really promising the first couple of days,” Layton told the Times on Monday. “I sold 35 to 40 sandwiches

every day in the first week.”

He credits the hot sales to one thing only: “It was definitely the smoke.”

But while Layton thought he had dotted his i’s and crossed his t’s, he had overlooked one important element of his business licence.

The zoning bylaw only permits a mobile concession to sell “prepared food products” is the explanation new City of Chilliwack communications manager Jamie Leggatt provided to the Times.

In other words, Vancouver-style food carts in which meals are actually cooked are not allowed in Chilliwack.

Since bylaws are only enforced on complaint basis, Layton would’ve gotten away with his day-long, daily pork cooking if it wasn’t for all that wood smoke, which bothered a Mill Street clothing shop that said its merchandise was being affected.

So the city shut his smoker down and,

at least so far, the sales followed.

“The day after the smoke was gone I sold 11 sandwiches,” he said, adding he hasn’t sold more than 20 since he stopped smoking on June 3.

Layton is still set up daily on Mill, serving his pulled pork on a bun with plans for an extended menu. The smoker is pure ornament now but he said he’s not going to give up.

“I’m hoping street food does come because it seems like it belongs down here,” he said. “I love the downtown.”

For Layton, smoking food is a passion and a hobby that he decided to turn into a career for as long as it lasts.

With a niche trade skill under his belt, he quit an $80,000-a-year job to start up the food cart, knowing that it wasn’t too big a risk since he could get another job tomorrow.

“I committed to take the plunge,” he said. “I love smoking food, the art of preserving food. It’s a huge hobby.”

bbotsford police have arrested a Chilliwack man in connection with four robberies involving a handgun across both Fraser Valley cities in just 10 days.

T h e 3 8 - y e a r- o l d m a n was arrested by Abbotsford Police Major Crime investigators with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team in the 30800 block of Peardonville Road early Wednesday.

The alleged crime spree began when the Shell Gas Station on Vedder Road in Chilliwack was robbed on May 24, according to the Abbtsford Police Department (APD).

This was followed by robberies of the Whatcom Wine and Spirits store on May 26, the Abbotsford Bank of Montreal on June 1 and the Mt. Lehman Liquor store on June 3.

All four robberies involved the use of a handgun. No one was injured in any of the incidents.

“This investigation was a priority for us and the arrest is a result of a collaborative effort between our office and the Chilliwack RCMP,” said APD Sgt. Casey Vinet.

“Robberies such as these tend to occur in sprees so we are very happy that we were able to identify and get this guy into custody before any more businesses could be impacted.”

Camper missing near Harrison Lake

ounties are still looking for a man missing from his campsite on a forest service road near Harrison Lake.

Sixty-five-year-old Raymond Salmen was scheduled to be camping for approximately a month in the remote-but-accessible area near the West Harrison Forestry Service Road.

“We are concerned for Mr. Salmen’s safety,” said Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen of the Upper Fraser Valley Regional RCMP. “This is a wilderness area with no formal campsites.

This area is frequented by campers and we are hoping that someone may have seen Mr. Salmen. We believe that he has been at this camp site since May 28.”

Police stumbled across the fact that the Vancouver resident was missing somewhat by accident as RCMP officers were in the area investigating a report of shots fired at approximately 5:30 p.m. on June 9.

While looking for information on the gunfire, officers discovered Salmen’s unoccupied campsite where his vehicle was located. Two pet dogs were also found secured in Salmen’s camper, according to vanNieuwenhuizen.

Police left the scene Sunday, returned Monday to speak to Salmen only to find the site still unattended. Mounties tracked down the registration to his vehicle, contacted his spouse and learned he was supposed to there and hadn’t been heard from in a few days.

This in itself was not surprising since there is no cellphone service in the area.

VanNieuwenhuizen said police suspect the dogs were in the camper “for a day or so,” meaning Salmen had been likely camping at the site up until the weekend.

Police have no information that connects Salmen to the shots fired complaint, nor would vanNieuwenhuizen say whether Salmen had guns or or if there was evidence of a firearm in his possession.

On Monday, RCMP Air One and the Agassiz-Harrison Search and Rescue were deployed to search the west side of Harrison Lake in a effort to locate Salmen. Trustees Barry Neufeld and Doug McKay opposed her idea at Tuesday’s meeting.

Neufeld said the reserve fund was intended for emergencies and he didn’t see early French immersion as an emergency.

He added community members and union reps on the board’s budget committee and district administration also opposed spending the reserve fund.

“The only pressure to spend this last little cushion that we’ve got seems to be political pressure,” Neufeld said, “and it’s only the trustees that seem to be in support of it.”

McKay, meanwhile, supported releasing the funds but not for EFI. He said programs for vulnerable learners were more pressing.

The rest of the board supported Dyck’s idea, however, and her first motion passed 4-2.

Her second motion to get EFI up and running as soon as possible was also met with opposition from Neufeld and McKay. Neufeld said that, prolonged lobbying from EFI parents notwithstanding, he didn’t see how EFI would improve overall achievement in the district.

“There’s a very vocal group of parents, very literate, very organized, but from the big picture I can’t see this benefitting the whole school district.”

McKay said he supported EFI but said the board should specify a 2015 startup date to allow for planning.

Trustee Heather Maahs, however, said that made no sense since the board had just released $600,000 for the sole purpose of funding the EFI implementation.

“And I would just like to remind my colleagues that we’re not talking about building a school here,” Maahs said. “We’re not talking about a big capital project. We’re talking about

Dyck and board chair Walt Krahn also rejected the idea of waiting until 2015 unless circumstances made starting in 2014 impossible, and Dyck’s motion passed 4-1, with Neufeld opposing and McKay abstaining.

Superintendent Evelyn Novak told theTimes a 2014 startup wasn’t guaranteed but that that timeline was “reasonable and possible.”

The biggest challenges, she said, would be to get classrooms and staffing in place.

She said plans for the program would be discussed at the board’s August planning meeting and finalized by the beginning of September.

After the meeting, parents said a 2014 startup was crucial for maintaining the current level of strong support since the core group of parents who have pushed for EFI have kids starting kindergarten or Grade 1 at that time.

“If they wait till 2015, they’re going to lose steam all the way through,” parent Dana Jones said. “People are going to get discouraged and they’re going to move to other places.”

As for securing staffing, there are plenty of Francophones in and around Chilliwack who would work in the district if jobs were posted, according Francophone Association of the Fraser Valley president Julie Veer.

Veer was one of five speakers who addressed trustees during the public participation segment of the meeting to support EFI. A Montreal native, she said she was a Quebec sovereigntist before she came to Chilliwack and found out how many people here wished they spoke French.

She said she now wishes she had had early English immersion as a child.

“I’m from Quebec and I didn’t have it,” she told trustees. “Of course, my English is not perfect. My h’s my t’s are ‘orrible.”

Road Safety Day held at mall

n Saturday, the Safer City team will host Road Safety Day in the south parking lot of Sears at Cottonwood Mall.

This event will raise awareness of the importance of road safety for all road users in the community.

At the event, the public will have an opportunity to interact with emergency and road safety professionals in a fun and interactive setting. There will be representatives and displays from Safer City, Fire, RCMP, CN Rail

Police, Commercial Vehicle Safety, BC Ambulance, MADD Canada, Speed Watch, BCAA, Kal Tire and the Integrated Road Safety Unit.

The interactive event will feature demonstrations from the RCMP in their “rollover simulator,” free child seat checks on a first-come, first-served basis, speed watch reader board demonstrations and much more. “I panicked a bit,” Crawshaw said. “I thought maybe he could see the rifle.”

When Newberry went around to his own passenger door, opened it and bent into the vehicle to get something, Crawshaw said he “barreled out” of his car with the rifle, came around and held the gun “down low” on Newberry.

“Best as I can recall, he sort of straightened up, and then I said something like ‘I’ve got a grievance for you today,’” Crawshaw said.

Crawshaw then told the jury Newberry came at him swearing.

“And as he came at me, I brought the rifle up, and as I brought the rifle up, it went off. At that stage I didn’t realize that the rifle had gone off.

It’s only in reflecting. So as the rifle went up, I jumped back and fired twice more right away.

So inside of about a second or a second and a half, I had fired three shots.”

Crawshaw’s lawyer asked him if Newberry had been looking at him when he fired the shots.

Crawshaw broke down in tears and said only, “He was dead. Nothing I could do about it.”

For a brief moment, Crawshaw said he

considered continuing on with his plan and marching a different manager in front of the plant, but he said he soon “got a grip on himself” jumped into his car and drove to the police station to turn himself in. Before the shooting, Crawshaw had worked at Fraser Valley Foods in Sardis (originally called York Farms) for about 19 years.

He was actively involved in the union and admitted to being “very verbally aggressive” with management while putting forward grievances.

“I was extremely aggressive, mouthy, threatening,” he said.

But things “began to build” when the plant was taken over by a new company that Crawshaw said was trying to get rid of the union.

“They started singling out shop stewards for [what we called] repression,” Crawshaw said.

“Some of us started getting [what we called] persecuted.”

Crawshaw’s own one-day suspension, which precipitated his plan to take Newberry hostage and extract an apology from him, came when he was representing another shop steward who had been suspended. ◗ Crawshaw’s hearing continues this week.

Blueprint for better education He who opens a school door, closes a prison -Victor Hugo Education is the “civil-rights issue of our time.” All children in a free nation have a moral claim to attend schools that will help them discover and develop their gifts.

The most important responsibility and solemn duty of a school board happens to be the general education of all its children. And ensuring that students finish high school ready either for college or the world of work ought to be the fundamental goal of a basic education.

Sadly, we’re failing to meet our obligation. For far too many of our students, high school is a route to nowhere when graduation rates remain stagnant at less than 75 per cent for the general population and a bare 50 per cent for First Nations.

Students are failing in large numbers.

But it doesn’t have to be so. Blueprint for a better tomorrow follows: ◗ Start with great expectations and a clearer focus. “Raise the bar so high that kids have to actually leave the ground to clear it.”; ◗ Make choices. For example, even though all subjects are important, literacy is more so. Therefore, shift more resources to teaching literacy in the primary grades; ◗ Ensure that the superintendent you hire says to the board, “Give me your mission statement and I’ll run with it.”; ◗ Appoint principals who are instructional leaders not just man-

Although many factors go into the making of a good school, principal leadership remains the key to school success; ◗ Use only the best instructional practices and develop a plan for reform that prevents mild learning problems from turning into virtually intractable disabilities; ◗ Continuously monitor progress.

Remember, what gets measured, gets done. For best results, try value-added assessment. Thus you’ll be accountable for the growth in student achievement; ◗ Keep parents fully onside by putting public back in public education; ◗ Above all, the board must adopt sound principles of budget allocation in order to guarantee continuation of the excellent education system desired. Put money where it matters most. Thus you’ll help improve performance while controlling costs. Learn to do more with less, i.e. efficiency and effectiveness. As it stands, we’re far more inefficient than any business would tolerate and still remain solvent.

I believe that real success comes when people stop making excuses

and become result-oriented. I say, it’s the waste in education, stupid!

Schools are producing low returns for the dollars spent i.e. value-formoney.

Schooling certainly is expensive.

We spend lavishly but not wisely.

It’s the misallocation of resourses, stupid. At roughly $8,600 per student a year, an average classroom of 25 students brings in $215,000 yearly. Where’s all that money going?

Teachers’ salaries are a relatively small part of the total. If we generously put a teacher’s salary and benefits at $100,000 a year, we still have $115,000 per each classroom to be spent on “other stuff.”

And one more thing: Be careful about wasting too much time on committees. After all, “A committee is a gathering of ‘important’ people who singly can do nothing, but together can decide that nothing can be done” - Jonathan Green. So, when it comes to committees, less may just turn out to be more.

Always remember that a board is responsible for evaluating all the educational programs and services provided (The School Act). To repeat, it’s the elected leaders who tell the appointed administraters what the priorities are. And it’s for the staff to implement them (see ChilliwackTimes editorial June 4).

nother D-Day anniversary has come and gone.

This one was the 69th, and generally, not too much ado was made of it.

The in-between anniversaries get less and less attention. The Second World War is now far enough in the past that serious note is only taken every five years—soon we’ll only bother at 10-year intervals, or not at all.

Anybody remember the end date of the Napoleonic Wars? Perhaps a handful of history majors do, but wars tend to lose their lustre after a 100 years or so, after all those who experienced them have passed into faded memories themselves.

But that’s precisely why we should remember important dates like June 6, 1944.

And we should forestall the growing misconception that that date marks the end of the Second World War. It wasn’t the end at all.

Not even close. Indeed, it barely marked the beginning of the end stage of the war.

The trek across Europe from the beaches of Normandy claimed tens of thousands of lives over the course of nearly a year, before the European armistices were signed—Italy on April 29, 1945, and the rest of Western Europe on May 7, 1945.

Tens of thousands more had yet to die before the curtain was drawn on the Pacific theatre on Sept. 2, 1945.

Those are dates that hardly anyone brings immediately to mind. Perhaps they are more mundane than the date that launched the largest-ever sea-borne military assault—an assault that was not anywhere near as successful as we are commonly led to believe through movies and popular history.

But even the attention that D-Day commands is dwindling, as forgetfulness seems to grow along with war.

PITP should support local talent Editor: So the powers that be have opted for a wider appeal and once again snubbed Chilliwack talent for the entertainment part of Party in the Park (PITP). I object to my tax dollars supporting this.

I understand that BIA does not stand for Band Improvement Association but if the object of this endeavour is to draw people from south of the highway into downtown Chilliwack, the least they could do is support our local arts.

Shop local campaigns abound and gain success by suggesting that these dollars will be recycled in our community. But if this money is going to Abbotsford or elsewhere, perhaps that is where I should be shopping, too.

It would be a shame to have to get behind organizing a Party in the Sardis (or Cultus Lake) Park—on the same dates—featuring only local talent and vendors. But it looks like they are asking for it.

By the way, I’ve lived in this area all of my 56 years.

Why can’t we have both?

Editor: Canada’s prostitution laws are currently up for debate and from everything I’m reading in various newspapers and online blogs, it seems there are two sides to this argument.

One side is arguing for the legalization of prostitution, the other for harsher criminalization of the pimps and johns.

Well why can’t we have both? Let’s allow sex workers to conduct business in a safe-ish environment (is it ever going to be a for-real safe job?) and introduce harsher punishments for those who exploit and/or abuse the workers (because we all know that simply legalizing prostitution won’t make the issue of abuse totally go away. It doesn’t

Gogos give a big thank you Editor: The Chilliwacky Gogos are thrilled with the unprecedented success from the combined efforts of the Gogos and the Sardis Secondary Drumline Band fundraiser of May 29.

The soldout crowd was an appreciative audience with the incredible result that raised over $10,000.

This could never have happened without the generous contributions and herculean efforts of the following participants and contributors.

Mr. Bruno Gagnon, teacher and drumline leader, whose generous heart beats with compassion and concern for others and who choreographed and created the entire show.

Mr. Gagnon not only teaches but leads his students by example, which has obviously instilled them with a responsibility to improve our world!

Mr. Gagnon’s organizing team of four brilliant volunteer students, Nadia van den Berg, Esther Kim, Jonas Zimmer and Tanner Olsen that did a superb job of attend-

ing to and carrying out the many details that pulled the show together Mr. Testa, principal of Sardis secondary, who graciously agreed to let this happen and whose tolerance allowed the Chilliwacky Gogos to “invade his school.” His quiet presence meant more to us than he could ever realize.

The Drumline Band members who “wowed” everyone with their perfect and fantastic performance that keeps their fans returning for more and never disappoints. They showed great respect and support for the Gogos commitment to improve the lives of our African Sisters.

The world famous, Simon Fraser University Pipe Band that rendered an amazing and impeccable rendition of unmatched talent, waived its fee to assist our cause and generously donated the proceeds from the sale of their CDs. The Drum Café whose drumming, dancing and singing is incredibly colourful and beyond most of our imaginings. It gave us a taste for more and a desire to celebrate the richness of the African culture. They also shared their sale proceeds with the Gogos.

The Sardis elementary choir members who put their hearts and souls into the finale, as only young kids can, and touched everyone with the sweet concentrated effort they put into their performance—what a way to end the show!

A very deep and hearfelt thanks to Ruth Jenkins who

spoke with dignity and conviction of her struggle and her choice to live a normal, productive life with HIV and her refusal to let HIV define her. Ruth’s powerful message was so touching and effective that it brought the crowd of 1,000 to a standing ovation of respect for her choices and courage.

The classical tones of the Student Orchestral Musicians that welcomed the crowd, with the finesse of professionals, was a great touch and much appreciated by all.

To all the “behind the scenes” students who worked diligently to erect the sets, decorate, and did clean up with no mumbling or grumbling—they just did it! To the school staff: Custodians, teachers and a special thanks to Joann Krawchuck for her management of ticket sales.

To London Drugs for selling tickets. To parents who chauffered and who have nurtured some incredible kids!

To our own amazing Gogos that worked tirelessly.

S

t. Mary’s principal Gianni Bittante is a little more hairless and his school’s coffers a little more full after a successful schoolwide walkathon fundraiser last month.

Well over 200 walkers, including 165 students as well as dozens of parents and volunteers hit the Vedder Trail May 17.

The goal was to raise $15,000 for computer upgrades and a new playground for the kindergarten to Grade 7 private school, but walkers raised almost $19,000.

The top student fundraiser, Piper Johnson, brought in $738.42 and earned the right to be principal for the day last Thursday.

announcements, sit at Bittante’s desk and even make some decisions about how long her schoolmates were allowed out for recess and lunch—within reason.

“The expectation is she’s a good principal for the day,” Bittante said with a laugh, “We have to remember we’re still in a school.”

The Grade 6/7 class, meanwhile, raised $3,000 and won the right to give Bittante a thorough shave above the neck—beard, moustache, head-hair and all.

“We’re really proud of the kids and the parents and the staff,” Bittante said. “Everybody got on board with it and, when you do that, you can accomplish great things.”

I

spent some time pulling weeds today. They are nasty, tenacious, and really a pain, and so unwanted and unwelcome. They tarnish the landscape.

I could ignore them, I suppose, but that would not make them go away, and they will eventually take over the yard and overwhelm all the other plants and vegetables, and left on their own, I am certain, they will eventually overrun the entire planet.

Bitterness in our hearts is like weeds. The Bible warns and keenly observes: “Keep a sharp eye out for weeds of bitter discontent. A thistle or two gone to seed can ruin a whole garden in no time.”

When bitterness is allowed to grow, it will always lead to antago-

The hard work of pulling weeds nism that hurts those around us, while destroying ourselves in the process. Actually, it hurts you more than anyone else. As someone has noted: Bitterness is like swallowing a bottle of poison and then waiting for the other person to die. Bitterness is as common as weeds and far more destructive.

So where does bitterness come from? Unwanted experiences—failures, disappointment, setbacks—that are perceived to be beyond one’s control result in the seed of bitterness being planted.

Why is it important to deal with bitterness? Even though we know that the anger will eventually seep into everything I do, there is a

certain attraction in the control revenge promises to give us. As Frederick Buechner, so colorfully describes it: “Of the seven deadly sins, anger is possibly the most fun. To lick your wounds, to smack your lips over grievances long past, to roll over your tongue the prospect of bitter confrontations still to come, to savor to the last toothsome morsel both the pain you are given, and the pain you are giving back—in many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself. The skeleton at the feast is you.”

Not only does bitterness destroy us emotionally, spiritually, and

relationally but also physically.

Psychiatrists and doctors tell us that stress caused by bitterness and other emotional turmoil, if not dealt with, can lead to headaches, blood pressure, muscle tension, weakened immune system and so on.

How and what could I do should I recognize that this bitter root is growing in my life? We begin by admitting the rage and source of disappointment. If possible, look for ways to reconcile. Take responsibility and dispense with the blame game, and then begin to let go of the pain and begin the journey of forgiveness. When you forgive you remove the offender’s power to hurt you. Understand

that when we continue to walk around hurt and bitter, the people who have hurt us are hurting us every day and in most cases, have moved on and are enjoying life.

This is very difficult and goes against every instinct. I think that is where God enters the fray. Allow God to help you forgive. Some of us don’t trust God; thus, we continue living in pain. Don’t forget to continue to ask God to forgive who has hurt you. Ask God to bless their life and heal them as well.

Like pulling weeds, forgiveness demands ongoing attention and I trust the Master Gardener to tend to the garden of my soul. We are going to pull some more weeds.

BCHL brings back Showcase

T

he BCHL has released the schedule for the Bauer BCHL Showcase, to be hosted for the second straight year at the Prospera Centre, Sept. 6 to 8.

Adopting a formula that has proven successful with its Alberta counterpart (AJHL), the Bauer BCHL Showcase brings all 16 of the province’s junior A

teams together for a weekend, with every team playing two games throughout the course of the three-day event.

The event serves as the opening weekend for the BCHL regular season and gives American and Canadian post-secondary scouts, as well as those from major junior teams, and even the

NHL an opportunity to see all the prospective recruits from the league in one location.

All games played will be inter-divisional. ◗ The host Chiefs will play the Powell River Kings on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. and the Vernon Vipers on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.

IMPORTANT SECURITY TIPS • Never give out personal information over the phone.

• Never tell an unidentified caller if you own a security system.

• Before signing a new contract, confirm that your existing contract has been fulfilled.

• Find out how long the company has been in business and if it is listed with BBB and CANASA. • Find out where the company is based and who does the service work.

• Ask for the written quotation with all of the contract details.

• Always ask for company contact information.

In the past few months homeowners across Chilliwack have been receiving phone calls from telemarketers who are soliciting alarm services. Although not inherently a scam, the methods and information these telemarketers use is often misleading and deceptive and could cost you much more than you think. Bert Brunia, owner of one of Chilliwack’s largest independent security companies, Contact Security Inc, has heard all too often from his own customers. “We get calls every week about these guys,” Mr. Brunia mentioned in a recent interview. “It’s frustrating because many of our clients think it is us doing the calling. Some are told that it is ‘their’ security company calling and that their contract is up for renewal or that they qualify for free upgrades. Others receive multiple calls on the same day and eventually call us because they are so frustrated.”

To make things worse, once they get an appointment and get in the door the misinformation continues. One of his employees went undercover and sat through a presentation. He was offered a motion detector that was “brand new to the market” because it incorporated an infrared sensor. “Brand new? We’ve been using those for decades!” says Mr. Brunia. The aggressive sales approach and “today only deals” force consumers into making an uninformed decision that they often regret. “I hear of monitoring contracts that are locked up for 5 years at up to $70 a month. That’s about 3 times the industry standard.” Earlier this year, Mr. Brunia went to the BC Securities Commission to lodge a complaint and was told this was a widespread issue affecting many cities in BC. “any person or company offering security services in BC is required to have a security business and workers licence.

Make sure to ask. For now, all we can do is inform and educate, and hope not too many people get roped into it. ”He said. A publication from the Canadian Security Associations (CANASA) highlights some of the questions to ask and be aware of before opening your home to a security salesman.

Strickland strives to be in sync

L

ocal synchronized swimmer Olivia Strickland will get a chance to vie for a spot on a national-level team this summer after helping her team to a gold medal at the provincial championships last month.

Swimming with the Coquitlam-based BC Aquasonics, the 12-year-old G.W. Graham middle school student captured gold in the Level 2 Team event and an individual bronze in 13-and-over Level 3 Figures at the Jean Peters Synchronized Swimming Provincial Championships in Victoria May 24 to 26.

The individual bronze came despite this being Strickland’s first year on the high-level team and her first time in the 13-and-over category, pitting her against swimmers as old as 17.

Based on their strong season, Strickland and her teammates have now been invited to attend the Aquasonics’ summer training camp to vie for a spot on the club’s agegroup national-level team for the 2013-14 season.

think they’d like to keep them together,” Strickland’s mom, Christina said.

Strickland started in synchronized swimming with the Chilliwack Family YMCA Orcas five years ago.

But the small club could only take her so far, and a taste of high-level competition on the 2012 BC Summer Games team sparked a decision to join the Coquitlam-based Aquasonics—B.C.’s top synchronized swim club, recently awarded the Gold Level of Club Excellence by Synchro Canada for the fourth year in a row.

“We needed to make that step to take her to this larger club.” said Christina.

It hasn’t been easy.

Since September, Strickland has traveled to Surrey and Coquitlam three times a week for three- to four-hour training sessions, getting home at 9 p.m. on school nights twice a week.

“I’m just feeding and driving,” Christina said with a laugh.

After Strickland’s successful first season with the team, however, it’s clear her family’s sacrifices are paying off.

“The club has had these kids on their radar as the next wave,” Christina said.

hilliwack filmmaker Nicolas Teichrob is back in town with another extreme, adventure sport film, but this time it comes with a message.

Stand is an independent, ocean sports film focused on surfing and stand-up paddleboarding, which looks at the threat of an oil spill currently facing the west coast of B.C. due to the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline and tanker route.

Co-produced by Sardis secondary grad Teichrob, the film premieres in Chilliwack on June 20 at G.W. Graham.

Nicolas graduated from Sardis secondary in 2002 who then went on to the University of British Columbia where he finished with a master’s in glacial morphology.

He now works as a professional extreme sports photographer. His debut film produced in 2011 was an extreme skiing/snowboarding film called Out. he Chilliwack Community Arts Council is currently producing and distributing an Arts Directory to help connect the arts in the community.

If you are an artist, musician, craftsperson, performing artist, instructor in any arts discipline, or if you represent an arts group or facility, the Arts Council would like to hear from you.

The provincial government has pro-

vided the Arts Council with a grant to create an online presence for the arts community in Chilliwack. In addition, the Arts Council will be distributing printed copies of the directory in libraries, tourism centres, civic facilities and various other locations throughout the Fraser Valley.

Basic information added to the directory is absolutely free, however, those who purchase an individual member-

ship ($15) or a group membership ($25) can add a descriptive paragraph to basic information (50 words maximum) as well as adding a photo to represent the art. Laugh it up at Duke’s Pub D

uke’s Pub and Mustangs Entertainment have come together to create a free—no, really, free!—comedy night this Friday featuring Dylan Rhymer with special guests.

Rhymer’s been on Comedy Now!, CBC’s The Debaters, The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Vancouver Comedy Festival and more.

His style is intelligent and imaginative, acerbic and fast-paced. Rhymer will be joined by special guest Ian Imrie from Langley with a special homecoming for doorman Richard “Dick” Thompson as well as the emcee for the evening, Langley’s own Susan Hansen.

Thompson is coming back to Chilliwack after years of being away starting his comedy and acting career on the mean streets of Vancouver. In the year 2000, Dick emceed a comedy show at local night club Area 51 and was promptly hired as their hilarious-yet-underpaid-andunderappreciated tiny doorman. Since that time he has been using his wit, humour and steroids to discipline hipsters and defuse drunken brawls at various night-clubs all over the Lower Mainland.

Thompson said he is very excited to be returning to Chilliwack to perform for all of his old friends and is extremely honoured to be opening for such an amazing talent as Rhymer.

Imrie is another opener for Rhymer this Friday. He got his start on stage with success taking Yuk Yuk’s best new comic in Barrie and hosted for one of Canada’s greats, Mike MacDonald, a tremendous

There is no entry fee for the contest and all photos must have been taken in the Fraser Valley between September 2012 and August 2013.

in Action, paintings by Vancouver artist Nasser Ghaderi.

Ghaderi arrived at painting as a new career from a background in film and poetry.

He discovered that painting matched his sense of energy and expressionism and provided an outlet for his desire to produce original, creative and spontaneous images.

Campbell, John (Jack) January 21, 1929 - June 3, 2013

Jack passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He is survived by Joy his wife of 63 years; his daughters Tracey (Norman) Noringseth, Terry (Ted) Haight; his grandchildren Kris, Ryan, Amy (Lucas), Aiva and Axel; and his constant companion Scruffy.

Before retiring to Cultus Lake Jack was a long time resident of White Rock, past Master of the Masonic Lodge, White Rock’s first life guard as well as involved in the White Rock Swim Club.

He enjoyed his daily swims in Cultus Lake and walking his dog Scruffy.

He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn, of almost 61 years, three brothers, one sister, five sons; Jim (Sharon), John (Wendy), Gerry (Tina), Lloyd (Wendy) and Arnold (Yvonne), 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

He will be missed by his family and friends.

A Celebration Life will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, June 17, 2013 at Cornerstone Christian Reformed Church, 9800 McNaught Rd, Chilliwack.

The family wishes to thank the home support and palliative care staff for their excellent care during Dad’s illness and final days.
