NEW PATIENTS WELCOME

jdeutsch@thenownews.com In the years to come, an untold number of families and their trusty companions will come to frolic in the sand and water at the dog run at Buntzen Lake. When they get tired, or just want to get away to the shade for a few moments, they’ll likely take a seat on a bench.

JEREMY DEUTSCH/NOW

Abbie and Ethan Webb, with their dog Finn, check out the new bench created as a memorial to their father. Though the seat may offer just a brief respite from the walk or a moment to ponder the view of the water, one bench will always be a permanent reminder of Rollie Webb. On Friday, a bench dedicated to the former Coquitlam Search and Rescue member was installed at the park

beneath a maple tree, with his two children, Ethan and Abbie, on hand to watch. “I’m glad we have this place of peace where we can come think about past memories and think about the future without forgetting,” Tracey Fenton, Webb’s ex-wife, told the Tri-Cities NOW. CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

“It is the experience of a lifetime,” the group’s website states. One such adventurer is Christian Krushel, a Coquitlam man on his first real wilderness trek outside the city. But what he lacks in experience now he hopes to garner through this trip. “One thing I hope to accomplish is to become more aware of the effect of what I and others have on the communities that are so dependent on water sources such as the Fraser,” he told the Tri-Cities NOW. “You always hear on T.V. and the radio and whatnot about how we need to help the environment, but I think that going on this trip will really help me and others realize first-hand what we can do to help.” Krushel jumped through hoops and climbed ladders to get his application in and accepted — no easy task considering the guidelines. The Rivershed Society requires a cover letter explaining the applicants’ leadership qualities, volunteer history and why the program is right for them; a resume; a sustainability project idea pitch describing a real, feasible goal the applicant has in mind focusing on helping the Fraser River; and a $1,500 registration fee. It’s easy to say you need to be devoted. But it’s well worth jumping the hurdles for the payout, according to Krushel. “First of all, I’ll meet new people on the trip, so I’ll be taking away some new friendships,” he said. “Secondly I am going to take away new information and first-hand experiences about the way communities operate and how wildlife co-exists with our huge presence. I’ll take away a whole new look on the way we affect the environment around us and our land as a whole. One thing I don’t want to take away is a sunburn.” Krushel’s project is simple: he plans to implement a food composting program at his church and, once established, spread this idea to other churches and organizations that host events with food. It’s in line with the Rivershed Society’s goals and above all it’s doable, and judging from past participants the program does help them do it. Just ask Coquitlam’s Caitlin Hill, a 2012 participant who completed the three-week journey from Williams Lake to Vancouver. Hill works for the Pacific Parklands Foundation and CONTINUED ON PAGE 11
